2Cardio- and hepato-protective potential of methanolic extract of Syzygium cumini(L.) Skeels seeds:A diabetic rat model study显示文摘Objective: To evaluate the effect of methanolic extract of Syzygium cumini(L.) Skeels(S. cumini) seeds on the major organs in an animal model of diabetes through biochemical and histopathological studies.Methods: The methanolic extracts of S. cumini seeds(100 and 200 mg/kg body weight) were administered to alloxan-induced diabetic rats daily, with fasting blood glucose levels being measured by glucometry at one-day interval for a duration of two weeks. Biochemical assays to evaluate changes in the functions of the heart, liver,pancreas and kidney were carried out. Histopathological changes in the diabetic rat organs(pancreas, liver, heart, kidney and spleen) were also observed after the 14 days of treatment with the extracts.Results: Oral administration of methanolic extracts of S. cumini seeds(100 and 200 mg/kg body weight), with gliclazide as a positive control(25 mg/kg), showed beneficial effects including lowering blood glucose levels(P < 0.001), improved heart and liver functions, and hyperlipidemia due to diabetes. At 200 mg/kg, the extracts reversed cardiac and liver damage caused by alloxan.Conclusions: In addition to the anti-hyperglycemic activity of methanolic extracts of S. cumini seeds, the extracts demonstrates potential to minimize cardiac and hepatic complications.Sumaiya Nahid Kishor Mazumder Zillur Rahman Saiful Islam Md. 11Regulation of dipeptidyl peptidase 8 and 9 expression in activated lymphocytes and injured liver显示文摘AIM:To investigate the expression of dipeptidyl peptidase(DPP) 8 and DPP9 in lymphocytes and various models of liver fibrosis.METHODS:DPP8 and DPP9 expression were measured in mouse splenic CD4 + T-cells,CD8 + T-cells and B-cells(B220 +),human lymphoma cell lines and mouse splenocytes stimulated with pokeweed mitogen(PWM) or lipopolysaccharide(LPS),and in dithiothreitol(DTT) and mitomycin-C treated Raji cells.DPP8 and DPP9 expression were measured in epidermal growth factor(EGF) treated Huh7 hepatoma cells,in fibrotic liver samples from mice treated with carbon tetrachloride(CCl 4) and from multidrug resistance gene 2(Mdr2 /Abcb4) gene knockout(gko) mice with biliary fibrosis,and in human end stage primary biliary cirrhosis(PBC).RESULTS:All three lymphocyte subsets expressed DPP8 and DPP9 mRNA.DPP8 and DPP9 expression were upregulated in both PWM and LPS stimulated mouse splenocytes and in both Jurkat T-and Raji B-cell lines.DPP8 and DPP9 were downregulated in DTT treated and upregulated in mitomycin-C treated Raji cells.DPP9transfected Raji cells exhibited more annexin V + cells and associated apoptosis.DPP8 and DPP9 mRNA were upregulated in CCl 4 induced fibrotic livers but not in the lymphocytes isolated from such livers,while DPP9 was upregulated in EGF stimulated Huh7 cells.In contrast,intrahepatic DPP8 and DPP9 mRNA expression levels were low in the Mdr2 gko mouse and in human PBC compared to non-diseased livers.CONCLUSION:These expression patterns point to biological roles for DPP8 and DPP9 in lymphocyte activation and apoptosis and in hepatocytes during liver disease pathogenesis.Sumaiya Chowdhury Yiqian Chen Tsun-Wen Yao Katerina Ajami Xin M Wang Yury Popov Detlef Schuppan Patrick Bertolino Geoffrey W McCaughan Denise MT Yu Mark D Gorrell 2013World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,19:1

13Clandestine nanoelectromechanical tags for identification and authentication显示文摘The realization of truly unclonable identification and authentication tags is the key factor in protecting the global economy from an ever-increasing number of counterfeit attacks.Here,we report on the demonstration of nanoscale tags that exploit the electromechanical spectral signature as a fingerprint that is characterized by inherent randomness in fabrication processing.Benefiting from their ultraminiaturized size and transparent constituents,these clandestine nanoelectromechanical tags provide substantial immunity to physical tampering and cloning.Adaptive algorithms are developed for digital translation of the spectral signature into binary fingerprints.A large set of tags fabricated in the same batch is used to estimate the entropy of the corresponding fingerprints with high accuracy.The tags are also examined under repetitive measurements and temperature variations to verify the consistency of the fingerprints.These experiments highlight the potential of clandestine nanoelectromechanical tags for the realization of secure identification and authentication methodologies applicable to a wide range of products and consumer goods.Sushant Rassay Mehrdad Ramezani Sumaiya Shomaji Swarup Bhunia Roozbeh Tabrizian 2020Microsystems & Nanoengineering2020,6,1:0

15Optimal treatment strategies to control acute HIV infection显示文摘Various antiretroviral therapies(ART)are administered to symptomatic human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)infected individuals to improve their health.The treatment effectiveness may depend on suppressing development of drug resistance,reduce evolution of new viral strains,minimize serious side effects and the costs of drugs.This paper deals with some results concerning optimal drug administration scheme successful in improving patients'health especially in poorly resourced settings.The model under consideration describes the interaction between the uninfected cells,the latently infected cells,the productively infected cells,and the free viruses.Generally,in viral infection,the drug strategy aspects either the virus infectivity or reduce the virion production.The mathematical model proposed here,deals with both situations with the objective function based on a combination of maximizing benefit relied on T cells count(the white cells that coordinate activities of the immune system)and minimizing the systemic cost.The existence of the optimal control pair is established and the Pontryagin's minimum principle is used to characterize these two optimal controls.The optimality system is derived and solved numerically using the forward and backward sweep method(FBSM).Our results indicate that early initiation of treatment makes a profound impact in both improving the quality of life and reducing the economic costs of therapy.Shohel Ahmed Sumaiya Rahman Md Kamrujjaman 2021Infectious Disease Modelling2021,6,1:0
16Effects of temperature and solvent concentration on the solvent crystallization of palm-based dihydroxystearic acid with isopropyl alcohol显示文摘Palm-based dihydroxystearic acid of 69.55% purity was produced in a 500-kg-per-batch operation pilot plant and purified through solvent crystallization in a custom fabricated simultaneous batch crystallizer unit. The effects of temperature and solvent concentration on yield, particle size distribution and purity were studied. The purity was higher, while the yield and particle size were lower and smaller, respectively, at higher temperature and solvent concentration. The solvent crystallization process efficiency was rated at 66-69% when carried out with 70-80% isopropyl alcohol at 20 ° C.Gregory F.L.
