1A Possible Configuration with Motor-generator Pair for Renewable Energy Integration显示文摘High penetration rates of renewable energy will bring stability problems for the future power grid.One of the critical issues is lack of inertia.In this paper,a synchronous motor-generator pair(MGP)system is proposed as a possible solution for renewable energy integration to enhance inertia and improve grid stability.First,feasibility studies of MGP on inertia,damping,efficiency,and cost are presented.Second,an analytical model is established based on its rotor angle relation.An active power control scheme based on voltage phase difference between renewable energy source and grid is then proposed,and state equations of MGP are derived for small signal stability.Next,two experiments are designed and implemented to verify stable operation and active power regulation of the MGP system.A single-machine infinite bus system is tested to investigate small signal stability and frequency response of MGP.The results show that the MGP system has a solid base in physics and is a feasible solution for providing enough inertia and improving small signal performance in the power grid with high penetration of renewable energy.The paper concludes with a discussion on future research directions to gain a better understanding of MGP.Siming Wei Yingkun Zhou Song Li Yongzhang Huang 2017CSEE Journal of Power and Energy Systems2017,3,1:20
2Notoginsenoside Ft1 acts as a TGR5 agonist but FXR antagonist to alleviate high fat diet-induced obesity and insulin resistance in mice显示文摘Obesity and its associated complications are highly related to a current public health crisis around the world.A growing body of evidence has indicated that G-protein coupled bile acid(BA) receptor TGR5(also known as Gpbar-1) is a potential drug target to treat obesity and associated metabolic disorders.We have identified notoginsenoside Ftl(Ftl) from Panax notoginseng as an agonist of TGR5 in vitro.However,the pharmacological effects of Ftl on diet-induced obese(DIO) mice and the underlying mechanisms are still elusive.Here we show that Ftl(100 mg/100 diet) increased adipose lipolysis,promoted fat browning in inguinal adipose tissue and induced glucagon-like peptide-1(GLP-1) secretion in the ileum of wild type but not Tgr5^(-/-) obese mice.In addition,Ftl elevated serum free and taurineconjugated bile acids(BAs) by antagonizing Fxr transcriptional activities in the ileum to activate Tgr5 in the adipose tissues.The metabolic benefits of Ftl were abolished in Cyp27 al^(-/-) mice which have much lower BA levels.These results identify Ftl as a single compound with opposite activities on two key BA receptors to alleviate high fat diet-induced obesity and insulin resistance in mice.Lili Ding Qiaoling Yang Eryun Zhang Yangmeng Wang Siming Sun Yingbo Yang Tong Tian Zhengcai Ju Linshan Jiang Xunjiang Wang Zhengtao Wang Wendong Huang Li Yang 2021Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B2021,11,6:10

6Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells:strategies,challenges,and potential for cutaneous regeneration显示文摘Umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)are a unique,accessible,and non-controversial source of early stem cells that can be readily manipulated.As the most common pluripotent cell,bone marrow-derived MSCs display limitations with the progress of stem cell therapy.By contrast,umbilical cord-derived cells,which have plentiful resources,are more accessible.However,several uncertain aspects,such as the effect of donor selection or culture conditions,long-term therapeutic effects,product consistency,and potential tumorigenicity,are the bottleneck in this clinical therapy.MSCs are predicted to undergo an unprecedented development in clinical treatment when a generally acknowledged criterion emerges.In the current paper,we highlight the application of umbilical cord-derived MSCs in skin therapies based on our previous studies,as well as the achievements of our peers in this field.This paper focuses on the strategies,challenges,and potential of this novel therapy.Siming Yang Sha Huang Changjiang Feng Xiaobing Fu 2012Frontiers of Medicine2012,6,1:2
7Stiffness-mediated mesenchymal stem cell fate decision in 3D-bioprinted hydrogels显示文摘Background:Hydrogels with tuneable mechanical properties are an attractive material platform for 3D bioprinting.Thus far,numerous studies have confirmed that the biophysical cues of hydrogels,such as stiffness,are known to have a profound impact on mesenchymal stem cell(MSC)differentiation;however,their differentiation potential within 3D-bioprinted hydrogels is not completely understood.Here,we propose a protocol for the exploration of how the stiffness of alginate–gelatin(Alg-Gel)composite hydrogels(the widely used bioink)affects the differentiation of MSCs in the presence or absence of differentiation inducing factors.Methods:Two types of Alg-Gel composite hydrogels(Young’s modulus:50 kPa vs.225 kPa)were bioprinted independently of porosity.Then,stiffness-induced biases towards adipogenic and osteogenic differentiation of the embedded MSCs were analysed by co-staining with alkaline phosphatase(ALP)and oil red O.The expression of specific markers at the gene level was detected after a 3-day culture.Results:Confocal microscopy indicated that all tested hydrogels supported MSC growth and viability during the culture period.Higher expression of adipogenic and osteogenic markers(ALP and lipoprotein lipase(LPL))in stiffer 3D-bioprinted matrices demonstrated a more significant response of MSCs to stiffer hydrogels with respect to differentiation,which was more robust in differentiation-inducing medium.However,the LPL expression in stiffer 3D-bioprinted constructs was reduced at day 3 regardless of the presence of differentiation-inducing factors.Although MSCs embedded in softer hydrogels to some extent proceeded toward adipogenic and osteogenic lineages within a few days,their differentiation seemed to be slower and more limited.Interestingly,the hydrogel itself(without differentiation-inducing factors)exhibited a slight effect on whether MSCs differentiated towards an adipogenic or an osteogenic fate.Considering that the mechanoregulated protein Yes-associated protein(YAP)is involved in MSC fate decisions,we further found that inhibition of YAP significantly downregulated the expression of ALP and LPL in MSCs in stiffer constructs regardless of the induced growth factors present.Conclusions:These results demonstrate that the differentiation of MSCs in 3D-bioprinted matrices is dependent on hydrogel stiffness,which emphasizes the importance of biophysical cues as a determinant of cellular behaviour.Yufan Liu Zhao Li Jianjun Li Siming Yang Yijie Zhang Bin Yao Wei Song Xiaobing Fu Sha Huang 2020Burns & Trauma2020,8,1:2

12Surface deflection-based reliability analysis of asphalt pavement design显示文摘The surface deflection of asphalt pavement reflects the strength and stiffness of the entire structure, which can be used to evaluate the rutting life of asphalt pavements. However, it is influenced by various stochastic variables including traffic loads, material properties and structural thickness of each pavement course. The uncertainty of above stochastic variables is of significance for accurately predicting the rutting life of asphalt pavement. In this study, the statistical characteristics of stochastic variables of asphalt pavement were assessed based on the field data collected from asphalt pavement projects. A unique formula with a fairly good accuracy was found using multiple linear regression based on numerical simulation results to ease the calculation of pavement deflection during the reliability analysis. It is shown that the stochastic variables of asphalt pavement can be well characterized by normal distribution or logarithmic normal distribution. The regressed formula to calculate the surface deflection of pavement has a fairly good accuracy with an error of less than 6.0% compared to the numerical method. The proposed surface deflection-based reliability analysis can be used easily to evaluate the influence of input parameters on the rutting life and to guide the structure design of asphalt pavement with required reliability.HUANG Wei LIANG SiMing WEI Ya 2020Science China(Technological Sciences)2020,63,9:1

16Multicolored structural coloration of carbon nanotube fibers显示文摘Carbon nanotube fibers(CNTFs)are endowed with excellent mechanical,electrical,and thermal properties and are considered promising candidates in numerous cutting-edge fields.However,the inherent black color of CNTFs hinders their practical application in fields with high aesthetic requirements such as wearable devices and smart textiles.Due to the smooth surface and chemical inertness,CNTFs are hard to be dyed by conventional chemical dyes or colorful inks.Herein,we realize a structural coloration of CNTFs by coating them with two metal oxide layers via atomic layer deposition.The three elements of color,that is,hue,saturation,and brightness,can be controlled by adjusting the types and thickness of each oxide layer.Colorful CNTFs with wide color gamut and high saturation are achieved through different combinations.A film interference model is also established to reveal the mechanism of the structural coloration,which is a comprehensive result of thin-film interference and surface roughness briefly.The calculated reflectance well fits the measured results by introducing surface roughness parameters.Moreover,the colored CNTFs are not iridescent because of retinal signal delay,which will further expand their applications.Run Li Shiliang Zhang Hang Chen Ya Huang Baoshun Wang Xueke Wu Qinyuan Jiang Siming Zhao Fei Wang Yanlong Zhao Rufan Zhang 2023SusMat2023,3,1:0
17Quantum dot mode-locked frequency comb with ultra-stable 25.5 GHz spacing between 20℃ and 120℃显示文摘Semiconductor mode-locked lasers(MLLs)are promising frequency comb sources for dense wavelength-divisionmultiplexing(DWDM)data communications.Practical data communication requires a frequency-stable comb source in a temperature-varying environment and a minimum tone spacing of 25 GHz to support high-speed DWDM transmissions.To the best of our knowledge,however,to date,there have been no demonstrations of comb sources that simultaneously offer a high repetition rate and stable mode spacing over an ultrawide temperature range.Here,we report a frequency comb source based on a quantum dot(QD)MLL that generates a frequency comb with stable mode spacing over an ultrabroad temperature range of 20–120℃.The two-section passively mode-locked In As QD MLL comb source produces an ultra-stable fundamental repetition rate of 25.5 GHz(corresponding to a 25.5 GHz spacing between adjacent tones in the frequency domain)with a variation of 0.07 GHz in the tone spacing over the tested temperature range.By keeping the saturable absorber reversely biased at-2 V,stable mode-locking over the whole temperature range can be achieved by tuning the current of the gain section only,providing easy control of the device.At an elevated temperature of 100℃,the device shows a 6 d B comb bandwidth of 4.81 nm and 31 tones with>36 d B optical signal-to-noise ratio.The corresponding relative intensity noise,averaged between 0.5 GHz and 10 GHz,is-146 d Bc∕Hz.Our results show the viability of the In As QD MLLs as ultra-stable,uncooled frequency comb sources for low-cost,large-bandwidth,and low-energy-consumption optical data communications.SHUJIE PAN JIANOU HUANG ZICHUAN ZHOU ZHIXIN LIU LALITHA PONNAMPALAMZIZHUO LIU MINGCHU TANG MU-CHIEH LO ZIZHENG CAO KENICHI NISHI KEIZO TAKEMASA MITSURU SUGAWARA RICHARD PENTY IAN WHITE ALWYN SEEDS HUIYUN LIU SIMING CHEN 2020Photonics Research2020,8,12:0
18Novel self-assembled porous yolk-shell NiO nanospheres with excellent electrochromic performance for smart windows显示文摘With the rapid development of optoelectronics,electrochromic(EC)materials(ECMs)with the advan-tages of low power consumption,easy viewing,high contrast ratio,etc have attached more and more attention from the fields of smart windows,electronic billboards,emerging wearable and portable electronics,and other next-generation displays.Nickel oxide(NiO)is a promising candidate for high-performance ECMs because of its neutral-colored states and low cost.However,NiO-based ECMs still face the problem of slow switching speed due to their low electrical conductivity and small lattice spacing.Metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)are promising candidates to fabricate hollow and porous transition metal oxides(TMOs)with high ion transport efficiency,excellent specific capacitance,and electrochemical activities.In this work,porous yolk-shell NiO nanospheres(PYS-NiO NSs)were syn-thesized via a solvothermal and subsequent calcination process of Ni-MOF,which exhibited outstanding EC performance.Because the large specific surface areas and hollow porous nanostructures were conducive to ionic transport,PYS-NiO NSs exhibited a fast coloring/bleaching speed(3.6/3.9 s per one coloring/bleaching cycle)and excellent cycling stability(82%of capacity retention after 3000 cycles).These superior EC properties indicated that the PYS-NiO NSs was a promising candidate for high-performance EC devices.This work provides a new and feasible strategy for the efficient preparation of TMOs ECMs with good EC performance,especially fast switching speed.Baoshun Wang Ya Huang Siming Zhao Run Li Di Gao Hairong Jiang Rufan Zhang 2024Particuology2024,84,1:0
19Oxygen-deficient tungsten oxide nanoflowers for dynamically tunable near-infrared light transmittance of smart windows显示文摘Electrochromic smart windows have attracted much attention in energy-saving buildings because of their ability to selectively modulate visible(VIS)and near-infrared(NIR)light transmittance.As is known,the NIR region accounts for about 50%of the total solar radiation.Therefore,reducing the NIR transmittance of windows will play a crucial role in reducing the energy consumption of buildings.However,for most of the reported electrochromic materials(ECMs)-based windows,it remains a longlasting challenge about how to achieve a low NIR transmittance during the past decades.In this work,we synthesize oxygendeficient tungsten oxide(WO_(3−x))nanoflowers(NFs)by a simple and efficient method that is facile for their mass production.The WO_(3−x)NFs exhibit low NIR transmittance of only 4.11%,0.60%,and 0.19%at 1200,1600,and 1800 nm,respectively,due to the localized surface plasmon resonance(LSPR)effect.Besides,the WO_(3−x)NFs exhibit an excellent dual-band modulating ability for both VIS and NIR light.They are able to operate in three distinct modes,including a bright mode,a cool mode,and a dark mode.Moreover,the WO_(3−x)NFs exhibit a fast bleaching/coloring time(1.54/6.67 s),and excellent cycling stability(97.75%of capacity retention after 4000 s).Ya Huang Baoshun Wang Pei Lyu Siming Zhao Xueke Wu Shiliang Zhang Run Li Qinyuan Jiang Fei Wang Yanlong Zhao Rufan Zhang 2023Nano Research2023,16,10:0
20Capacity of human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells to differentiate into sweat gland-like cells:a preclinical study显示文摘Human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells(hUC-MSCs)possess various advantageous properties,including self-renewal,extended proliferation potential,multi-lineage differentiation potential and capacity for differentiating into sweat gland-like cells in certain conditions.However,little is known about the effect of clinical-grade culture conditions on these properties and on the differentiative potential of hUC-MSCs.In this study,we sought to investigate the properties of hUC-MSCs expanded with animal serum free culture media(ASFCM)in order to determine their potential for differentiation into sweat gland-like cells.We found that primary cultures of hUC-MSCs could be established with ASFCM.Moreover,cells cultured in ASFCM showed vigorous proliferation comparable to those of cells grown in classical culture conditions containing fetal bovine serum(FBS).Morphology of hUC-MSCs cultured in ASFCM was comparable to those of cells grown under classical culture conditions,and hUC-MSCs grown in both of the two culture conditions tested showed the typical antigen profile of MSCs—positive for CD29,CD44,CD90,and CD105,and negative for CD34 and CD45,as expected.Chromosomal aberration assay revealed that the cells were stable after long-term culture under both culture conditions.Like normal cultured MSCs,hUC-MSCs induced under ASFCM conditions exhibited expression of the same markers(CEA,CK14 and CK19)and developmental genes(EDA and EDAR)that are characteristic of normal sweat gland cells.Taken together,our findings indicate that the classical culture medium used to differentiate hUC-MSCs into sweat gland-like cells can be replaced safely by ASFCM for clinical purposes.Siming Yang Kui Ma Changjiang Feng Yan Wu Yao Wang Sha Huang Xiaobing Fu 2013Frontiers of Medicine2013,7,3:0
