| 3 | A Chromosome-Scale Genome Assembly of Paper Mulberry(Bmussonetia papyrifera)Provides New Insights into Its Forage and Papermaking Usage显示文摘Paper mulberry(Broussonetia papyrifera)is a well-known woody tree historically used for Cai Lun papermaking,one of the four great inventions of ancient China.More recently,Paper mulberry has also been used as forage to address the shortage of feedstuff because of its digestible crude fiber and high protein contents.In this study,we obtained a chromosome-scale genome assembly for Paper mulberry using integrated approaches,including Illumina and PacBio sequencing platform as well as Hi-C,optical,and genetic maps.The assembled Paper mulberry genome consists of 386.83 Mb,which is close to the estimated size,and 99.25%(383.93 Mb)of the assembly was assigned to 13 pseudochromosomes.Comparative genomic analysis revealed the expansion and contraction in the flavonoid and lignin biosynthetic gene families,respectively,accounting for the enhanced flavonoid and decreased lignin biosynthesis in Paper mulberry.Moreover,the increased ratio of syringyl-lignin to guaiacyl-lignin in Paper mulberry underscores its suitability for use in medicine,forage,papermaking,and barkcloth making.We also identified the rootassociated microbiota of Paper mulberry and found that Pseudomonas and Rhizobia were enriched in its roots and may provide the source of nitrogen for its stems and leaves via symbiotic nitrogen fixation.Collectively,these results suggest that Paper mulberry might have undergone adaptive evolution and recruited nitrogen-fixing microbes to promote growth by enhancing flavonoid production and altering lignin monomer composition.Our study provides significant insights into genetic basis of the usefulness of Paper mulberry in papermaking and barkcloth making,and as forage.These insights will facilitate further domestication and selection as well as industrial utilization of Paper mulberry worldwide. | Xianjun Peng Hui Liu Peilin Chen Feng Tang Yanmin Hu Fenfen Wang Zhi Pi Meiling Zhao Naizhi Chen Hui Chen Xiaokang Zhang Xueqing Yan Min Liu Xiaojun Fu Guofeng Zhao Pu Yao Lili Wang He Dai Xuming Li Wei Xiong Wencai Xu Hongkun Zheng Haiyan Yu Shihua Shen | 2019 | Molecular Plant2019,12,5: | 18 |

| 7 | Soil Organic Carbon Accumulation Increases Percentage of Soil Olsen-P to Total P at Two 15-Year Mono-Cropping Systems in Northern China显示文摘Soil organic carbon(SOC) and soil Olsen-P are key soil fertility indexes but information on their relationships is limited particularly under long-term fertilization. We investigated the relationships between SOC and the percentage of soil Olsen-P to total P(PSOPTP) under six different 15-yr(1990-2004) long-term fertilizations at two cropping systems in northern China. These fertilization treatments were(1) unfertilized control(control);(2) chemical nitrogen(N);(3) N plus chemical P(NP);(4) NP plus chemical potassium(NPK);(5) NPK plus animal manure(NPKM) and(6) high NPKM(hNPKM). Compared with their initial values in 1989 at both sites, during the 11th to 15th fertilization years annual mean SOC contents were significantly increased by 39.4-47.0% and 58.9-93.9% at Gongzhuling, Jilin Province, and Urumqi, Xinjiang, China, under the two NPKM fertilizations, respectively, while no significant changes under the no-P or chemical P fertilization. During the 11th to 15th fertilization years, annual mean PSOPTP was respectively increased by 2.6-4.2 and 5.8-14.1 times over the initial values under the two chemical P fertilizations and the two NPKM fertilizations, but was unchanged in their initial levels under the two no-P fertilizations at both sites. Over the 15-yr long-term fertilization SOC significantly positively correlated with PSOPTP(r2=0.55-0.79, P<0.01). | 8 | A two-step lineage reprogramming strategy to generate functionally competent human hepatocytes from fibroblasts显示文摘Terminally differentiated cells can be generated by lineage reprogramming,which is,however,hindered by incomplete conversion with residual initial cell identity and partial functionality. Here, we demonstrate a new reprogramming strategy by mimicking the natural regeneration route, which permits generating expandable hepatic progenitor cells and functionally competent human hepatocytes. Fibroblasts were first induced into human hepatic progenitor-like cells (hHPLCs), which could robustly expand in vitro and efficiently engraft in vivo. Moreover, hHPLCs could be efficiently induced into mature human hepatocytes (hiHeps) in vitro, whose molecular identity highly resembles primary human hepatocytes (PHHs). Most importantly, hiHeps could be generated in large quantity and were functionally competent to replace PHHs for drug-metabolism estimation, toxicity prediction and hepatitis B virus infection modeling. Our results highlight the advantages of the progenitor stage for successful lineage reprogramming. The biogenesis of mi RNAs is tightly controlled at multiple steps, such as transcription of mi RNA genes,processing by Drosha and Dicer, and transportation of precursor mi RNAs(pre-mi RNAs) from the nucleus to the cytoplasm by exportin-5(XPO5). Given the critical role of nuclear export of premi RNAs in mi RNA biogenesis, any alterations of XPO5, resulting from either genetic mutation,epigenetic change, abnormal expression level or posttranslational modification, could affect mi RNA expression and thus have profound effects on tumorigenesis. Importantly, XPO5 phosphorylation by ERK kinase and its cis/trans isomerization by the prolyl isomerase Pin1 impair XPO50 s nucleo-to-cytoplasmic transport ability of pre-mi RNAs, leading to downregulation of mature mi RNAs in hepatocellular carcinoma. | 11 | Residue management induced changes in soil organic carbon and total nitrogen under different tillage practices in the North China Plain显示文摘Crop residue retention has been considered a practicable strategy to improve soil organic carbon(SOC)and total nitrogen(TN),but the effectiveness of residue retention might be different under varied tillage practices.To evaluate the effects of residue management on the distribution and stocks of SOC and TN under different tillage practices,a bifactorial experiment with three levels for tillage practices(no-tillage,rotary tillage,and conventional tillage)and two levels for residue managements(residue retention and residue removal)was conducted in the North China Plain(NCP).Results showed that after a short experimental duration(3–4 years),concentrations of SOC and TN in the 0–10 cm layer were higher under no-tillage than under conventional tillage,no matter whether crop residues were retained or not.Residue retention increased SOC and TN concentrations in the upper layers of soil to some degree for all tillage practices,as compared with residue removal,with the greatest increment of SOC concentration occurred in the 0–10 cm layer under rotary tillage,but in the 10–30 cm layer under conventional tillage.The stocks of SOC in the 0–50 cm depth increased from 49.89 Mg ha–1 with residue removal to 53.03 Mg ha–1 with residue retention.However,no-tillage did not increase SOC stock to a depth of 50 cm relative to conventional tillage,and increased only by 5.35%as compared with rotary tillage.Thus,residue retention may contribute more towards SOC sequestration than no-tillage.Furthermore,the combination between residue retention and no-tillage has the greatest advantage in enhancing SOC and TN in the NCP region. | PU Chao KAN Zheng-rong LIU Peng MA Shou-tian QI Jian-ying ZHAO Xin ZHANG Hai-lin | 2019 | Journal of Integrative Agriculture2019,18,6: | 8 |

| 13 | Metabolic Disorders Increase the Risk to Incident Cardiovascular Disease in Middle-aged and Elderly Chinese显示文摘Objective The association of metabolic syndrome (MetS) with cardiovascular diseases (CVD) has not been adequately explored in middle-aged and elderly Chinese.This study aimed to investigate MetS' prevalence and its impact on the CVD incidence in this specific population group.Methods A data set of a community-based prospective cohort study was analyzed.A total of 2300 subjects aged 40-94 years were followed up for the CVD events.MetS defined according to the JCDCG criteria was assessed at baseline,and the middle-aged and elderly groups were classified by the WHO definition.Results As compared with the middle-aged group,the prevalence of MetS increased by 0.6 times (34.6% vs.21.3%) and the incidence density of CVD increased by 4.9 times in the elderly group (52.3/1000 person-year vs.8.9/1000 person-year).Furthermore,the multivariate Cox regression revealed that the risk to CVD incidence was independently related to increased waist circumference in the middle-aged group (HR=2.23,P<0.01) and to elevated blood glucose in the elderly group (HR=1.39,P<0.01).Conclusion MetS was highly prevalent in middle-aged and elderly Chinese.MetS significantly increased the risk to CVD incidence in the elderly.All individuals with metabolic disorders should receive active clinical care to reduce the incidence of CVD. | ZHANG Ming Liang HOU Xu Hong ZHU Yun Xia LU Jun Xi PENG Liang Pu GU Hui Lin JIA Wei Ping | 2012 | Biomedical and Environmental Sciences2012,25,1: | 7 |
| 14 | Construction of ecological security patterns and ecological restoration zones in the city of Ningbo,China显示文摘Studying an ecological restoration zoning process under the background of ecological security patterns is of great significance to the rapid adjustment and optimization of a landscape pattern.In this study,a remote sensing ecological index and a morphological spatial pattern analysis method were used to assess the quality of habitats and identify ecological sources in the city of Ningbo;ecological corridors,ecological pinch points,and ecological barrier points were extracted by using a circuit theory to construct ecological security patterns and ecological restoration zones.The results indicate:(1)There were 47 ecological sources,and 83 key ecological corridors in Ningbo,and the ecological land area was about 1898.39 km^(2),accounting for 19.89%of the total study area.(2)The ecological source areas were distributed in“one patch and three belts”,and the low-resistance ecological corridors were concentrated in southern Yuyao city,western Haishu district,and central and western Fenghua district;the ecological network in the western and southern regions was dense.(3)There were four types of ecological restoration zones that need to be established,which were prioritized restoration zones,prioritized protection zones,key conservation zones,and general conservation zones distributed hierarchically from inner part towards outside.(4)Ninghai county,Yuyao city,and Fenghua district had large ecological land areas,however,prioritized restoration and protection zones in Ninghai and Fenghua were also large.The analysis results are expected to provide a reference for optimizing a territorial ecological space in a city. | ZHANG Haitao LI Jialin TIAN Peng PU Ruiliang CAO Luodan | 2022 | Journal of Geographical Sciences2022,32,4: | 7 |

The wheat cultivars tested were Yangmai 9 with weak-gluten and Yangmai 12 with medium-gluten. Compared with 25°C, the higher the temperature was, the higher was the MDA content in flag leaves, while lower were the SOD, POD, and CAT activities. SOD and CAT activities in Yangmai 12 appeared to be more sensitive to high temperature than that in Yangmai 9. But POD activity in Yangmai 12 was less sensitive to high temperature. MDA content in Yangmai 12 was higher than that in Yangmai 9. | 17 | Tumor-derived neomorphic mutations in ASXL1 impairs the BAP1-ASXL1-FOXK1/K2 transcription network显示文摘Additional sex combs-like 1(ASXL1)interacts with BRCA1-associated protein 1(BAP1)deubiquitinase to oppose the polycomb repressive complex 1(PRC1)-mediated histone H2A ubiquitylation.Germline BAP1 mutations are found in a spectrum of human malignancies,while ASXL1 mutations recurrently occur in myeloid neoplasm and are associated with poor prognosis.Nearly all ASXL1 mutations are heterozygous frameshift or nonsense mutations in the middle or to a less extent the C-terminal region,resulting in the production of C-terminally truncated mutant ASXL1 proteins.How ASXL1 regulates specific target genes and how the C-terminal truncation of ASXL1 promotes leukemogen-esis are unclear.Here,we report that ASXL1 interacts with forkhead transcription factors FOXK1 and FOXK2 to regulate a subset of FOXK1/K2 target genes.We show that the C-terminally truncated mutant ASXL1 proteins are expressed at much higher levels than the wild-type protein in ASXL1 heterozygous leukemia cells,and lose the ability to interact with FOXK1/K2.Specific deletion of the mutant allele eliminates the expression of C-termi-nally truncated ASXL1 and increases the association of wild-type ASXL1 with BAP1,thereby restoring the expression of BAP1-ASXL1-FOXK1/K2 target genes,particularly those involved in glucose metabolism,oxygen sensing,and JAK-STAT3 signaling pathways.In addition to FOXK1/K2,we also identify other DNA-bind-ing transcription regulators including transcription factors(TFs)which interact with wild-type ASXL1,but not C-terminally truncated mutant.Our results suggest that ASXL1 mutations result in neomorphic alleles that contribute to leukemogenesis at least in part through dominantly inhibiting the wild-type ASXL1 from interacting with BAP1 and thereby impairing the function of ASXL1-BAP1-TF in regulating target genes and leukemia cell growth. | Yu-Kun Xia Yi-Rong Zeng Meng-Li Zhang Peng Liu Fang Liu Hao Zhang Chen-Xi He Yi-Ping Sun Jin-Ye Zhang Cheng Zhang Lei Song Chen Ding Yu-Jie Tang Zhen Yang Chen Yang Pu Wang Kun-Liang Guan Yue Xiong Dan Ye | 2021 | Protein & Cell2021,12,7: | 6 |
| 18 | Ethnic Differences in Preterm Birth Risks for Pregnant Women with Thyroid Dysfunction or Autoimmunity:A Meta-analysis显示文摘Objective Abnormal maternal thyroid function is associated with preterm birth.However,this association stays dubious in relevant individual studies for ethnic difference reasons and lack of direct supporting data.This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between preterm birth and thyroid dysfunction or autoimmunity based on ethnic differences.Methods Relevant studies were identified through searches of MEDLINE,Excerpta Medica,Wan Fang,China Biological Medicine disc,and China National Knowledge Infrastructure from inception to June 15,2016.Original articles in which an incidence or prevalence of thyroid dysfunction or autoimmunity before second trimester of pregnancy could be extracted were included.Results Thirty-two unique studies were included for the final meta-analysis.Patients involved were divided into two groups:Group 1(G1) and Group 2(G2) comprising of Asian and Caucasian populations,respectively.Positive thyroid antibodies were associated with the occurrence of preterm birth in both G1 [odds ratio(OR):3.62,95% confidence interval(CI):2.83-4.65] and G2(OR:1.35,95% CI:1.17-1.56);hypothyroidism,only in G2(OR:1.20,CI:1.09-1.33);and subclinical hypothyroidism or hypothyroxinemia,in neither group.Conclusion Thyroid autoimmunity may be a more favorable factor leading to preterm birth among pregnant women of different ethnicities,compared with thyroid dysfunction. | LI Min WANG Shao Wei WU Feng Li SHI Jin YU Pu Lin PENG Xiu Ling SUN Liang | 2016 | Biomedical and Environmental Sciences2016,29,10: | 5 |
| 19 | Surface and intrinsic contributions to extinction properties of ZnSe quantum dots显示文摘This work studies extinction properties of ZnSe quantum dots terminated with either Se-surface or Zn-surface(Se-ZnSe or Zn-ZnSe QDs).In addition to commonly observed photoluminescence quenching by anionic surface sites,Se-ZnSe QDs are found to show drastic signatures of Se-surface states in their UV-visible(Vis)absorption spectra.Similar to most QDs reported in literature,monodisperse Zn-ZnSe QDs show sharp absorption features and blue-shifted yet steep absorption edge respect to the bulk bandgap.However,for monodisperse Se-ZnSe QDs,all absorption features are smeared and a low-energy tail is identified to extend to an energy window below the bulk ZnSe bandgap.Along increasing their size,a cyclic growth of ZnSe QDs switches their surface from Zn-terminated to Se-terminated ones,which confirms that the specific absorption signatures are reproducibly repeated between those of two types of the QDs.Though the extinction coefficients per unit of Se-ZnSe QDs are always larger than those of Zn-ZnSe QDs with the same size,both of them approach the same bulk limit.In addition to contribution of the lattice,extinction coefficients per nanocrystal of Zn-ZnSe QDs show an exponential term against their sizes,which is expected for quantum-confinement enhancement of electron-hole wavefunction overlapping.For Se-ZnSe QDs,there is the third term identified for their extinction coefficients per nanocrystal,which is proportional to the square of size of the QDs and consistent with surface contribution. | Shangxin Lin Jiongzhao Li Chaodan Pu Hairui Lei Meiyi Zhu Haiyan Qin Xiaogang Peng | 2020 | Nano Research2020,13,3: | 5 |
