| 1 | The long rather than the short allele of 5-HTTLPR predisposes Han Chinese to anxiety and reduced connectivity between prefrontal cortex and amygdala显示文摘The short allele of the serotonin-transporter gene is associated with higher risk for anxiety and depression in Caucasians, but this association is still unclear in Asians. Here, we addressed this issue using behavioral and multi-modal MRI approaches in a large group of healthy Han Chinese participants (n = 233). In contrast to findings in Caucasians, we found that long-allele (L) carriers had higher anxiety scores. In another group (n = 64) experiencing significant levels of depression or anxiety, the L-allele frequency was also significantly higher. In healthy participants, L-carriers had reduced functional and anatomical connectivity between the amygdala and prefrontal cortex (PFC), which was correlated with anxiety or depression scores. Our findings demonstrated that in Chinese Han participants, in contrast to Caucasians, the L-allele confers vulnerability to anxiety or depression and weakens top-down emotional control between the PFC and amygdala. | 2 | A cross-sectional study on compliance with topical glaucoma medication and its associated socioeconomic burden for a Chinese population显示文摘AIM: To estimate the overall drug compliance for local Chinese glaucoma patients on long-term topical treatment.METHODS: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study.Fifty-seven primary glaucoma patients from the subspecialty clinic of a publicly-funded tertiary care hospital in Hong Kong completed a questionnaire on compliance with topical glaucoma medication,attitude towards glaucoma and therapy and vision related quality of life.Noncompliance was defined as reporting missing more than or equal to 10% of the prescribed topical glaucoma medication during the 2wk immediately prior to the consultation.Relationships between noncompliance and demographics,attitude,disease and treatment status was studied.Cost was estimated with quality of life and direct medical cost involved with noncompliance.Multivariable logistic regression on noncompliance was performed on selected factors.RESULTS: Compliance was calculated as 75%(95% CI: 64%-87%) among 57 subjects(mean age 69 y,female 51%).No statistical significant relationship was established between noncompliance and any single factors or outcomes.Age(P=0.048) and forgetfulness(P=0.064) were found to be marginally significant predictive factors on noncompliance in multivariable logistic regression.Noncompliance might be related(P=0.130) to poorer self-rated vision-associated quality of life.The societal cost of noncompliance was estimated to be over 2510 life-years and US$ 3.7 million territory-wide.CONCLUSION: The compliance of Chinese glaucoma patients in Hong Kong is comparable to other parts in the world,and carries detrimental impacts on individual and societal levels.Age and forgetfulness are two possible independent predictors for noncompliance. | Man-Hin Lui Jason Chun Ho Lam Yi Lee Kwong Tak Siu Wong Pak Long Cheung Sherri Shun Yan Lai Pak Lun Yuen Wai Yiu Lam Ho Yan Chan Yiu Fai Wong Jimmy Shiu Ming Lai Kendrick Co Shih | 2017 | International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2017，10，2： | 5 |

| 5 | Sevoflurane promotes migration,invasion,and colony-forming ability of human glioblastoma cells possibly via increasing the expression of cell surface protein 44显示文摘Surgical resection of primary solid tumor under anesthesia remains a common practice.It has been concerned whether general anesthetics,especially volatile anesthetics,may promote the growth,migration,and invasion of cancer cells.In this study,we examined the effects of sevo?urane on human glioblastoma cells and determined the role of cluster of differentiation(CD)44,a cell surface protein involved in cell growth,migration,and invasion,in sevo?urane’s effects.We showed that exposure to 1%–4%sevo?urane did not change the cell proliferation,but concentration-dependently increased the invasion of human glioblastoma U251 cells.Furthermore,4%sevo?urane signi?cantly increased the migration and colony-forming ability of U251 cells.Similar results were observed in human glioblastoma A172 cells.Exposure to sevo?urane concentration-dependently increased the activity of calpains,a group of cysteine proteinases,and CD44 protein in U251 and A172 cells.Knockdown of CD44 with siRNA abolished sevo?urane-induced increases in calpain activity,migration,invasion,and colony-forming ability of U251 cells.Inhalation of 4%sevo?urane signi?cantly increased the tumor volume and invasion/migration distance of U87 cells from the tumor mass in the nude mice bearing human glioblastoma U87 xenograft in the brain.The aggravation by sevo?urane was attenuated by CD44 silencing.In conclusion,sevo?urane increases the migration,invasion,and colony-forming ability of human glioblastoma cells in vitro,and their tumor volume and invasion/migration in vivo.Sevo?urane enhances these cancer cell biology features via increasing the expression of CD44. | Ren-chun Lai Wei-ran Shan Di Zhou Xiao-qing Zeng Kendrick Zuo Dong-feng Pan Wei-an Zeng Zhi-yi Zuo | 2019 | Acta Pharmacologica Sinica2019，40，11： | 3 |

| 7 | Safety of same-day endoscopic ultrasound and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography under conscious sedation显示文摘AIM: To assess the tolerability and safety of same-day tandem procedures, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) followed by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) under conscious sedation. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted at Loma Linda University Medical Center, a tertiary-care center. All 54 patients who underwent EUS followed by ERCP (group A) from 2004 to 2006 were included in the study. A second group of 56 patients who underwent EUS only (group B), and a third group of 53 patients who underwent ERCP only (group C) during the same time period were selected consecutively as control groups for comparison. RESULTS: Conscious sedation was used in 96% of patients in group A. Mean dosages of meperidine and midazolam used in group A were signifi cantly higher than in group B or C. Mean recovery time in group A was not statistically longer than in group B or C. Therewas no signifi cant difference in the incidence of sedation-related and procedural-related complications. CONCLUSION: Tandem EUS/ERCP procedure can be safely performed under conscious sedation with minimal adverse events. | 13 | High proportion strontium-doped micro-arc oxidation coatings enhance early osseointegration of titanium in osteoporosis by anti-oxidative stress pathway显示文摘The excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species(ROS)under osteoporosis precipitates a microenvironment with high levels of oxidative stress(OS).This could significantly interfere with the bioactivity of conventional titanium implants,impeding their early osseointegration with bone.We have prepared a series of strontium(Sr)-doped titanium implants via micro-arc oxidation(MAO)to verify their efficacy and differences in osteoinduction capabilities under normal and osteoporotic(high OS levels)conditions.Apart from the chemical composition,all groups exhibited similar physicochemical properties(morphology,roughness,crystal structure,and wettability).Among the groups,the low Sr group(Sr25%)was more conducive to osteogenesis under normal conditions.In contrast,by increasing the catalase(CAT)/superoxide dismutase(SOD)activity and decreasing ROS levels,the high Sr-doped samples(Sr75% and Sr100%)were superior to Sr25% in inducing osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells and the M2 phenotype polarization of RAW264.7 cells,thus enhancing early osseointegration.Furthermore,the results of both in vitro cell co-culture and in vivo studies also showed that the high Sr-doped samples(especially Sr100%)had positive effects on osteoimmunomodulation under the OS microenvironment.Ultimately,the collated findings indicated that the high proportion Sr-doped MAO coatings were more favorable for osteoporosis patients in implant restorations. | Xinkun Shen Kai Fang Kendrick Hii Ru Yie Zixin Zhou Yiding Shen Shuyi Wu Yue Zhu Zhennan Deng Pingping Ma Jianfeng Ma Jinsong Liu | 2022 | Bioactive Materials2022，7，4： | 2 |
