1Role of complex organic arsenicals in food in aggregate exposure to arsenic显示文摘For much of the world's population, food is the major source of exposure to arsenic.Exposure to this non-essential metalloid at relatively low levels may be linked to a wide range of adverse health effects. Thus, evaluating foods as sources of exposure to arsenic is important in assessing risk and developing strategies that protect public health. Although most emphasis has been placed on inorganic arsenic as human carcinogen and toxicant, an array of arsenic-containing species are found in plants and animals used as foods. Here,we 2evaluate the contribution of complex organic arsenicals(arsenosugars, arsenolipids,and trimethylarsonium compounds) that are found in foods and consider their origins,metabolism, and potential toxicity. Commonalities in the metabolism of arsenosugars and arsenolipids lead to the production of di-methylated arsenicals which are known to exert many toxic effects. Evaluating foods as sources of exposure to these complex organic arsenicals and understanding the formation of reactive metabolites may be critical in assessing their contribution to aggregate exposure to arsenic.David J.Thomas Karen Bradham 2016Journal of Environmental Sciences2016,28,11:18

5Geochronological constraints on the metamorphic sole of the Semail ophiolite in the United Arab Emirates显示文摘The Semail ophiolite of Oman and the United Arab Emirates(UAE) provides the best preserved large slice of oceanic lithosphere exposed on the continental crust,and offers unique opportunities to study processes of ocean crust formation,subduction initiation and obduction.Metamorphic rocks exposed in the eastern UAE have traditionally been interpreted as a metamorphic sole to the Semail ophiolite.However,there has been some debate over the possibility that the exposures contain components of older Arabian continental crust.To help answer this question,presented here are new zircon and rutile U-Pb geochronological data from various units of the metamorphic rocks.Zircon was absent in most samples.Those that yielded zircon and rutile provide dominant single age populations that are 95-93 Ma,partially overlapping with the known age of oceanic crust formation(96.5-94.5 Ma),and partially overlapping with cooling ages of the metamorphic rocks(95-90 Ma).The data are interpreted as dating high-grade metamorphism during subduction burial of the sediments into hot mantle lithosphere,and rapid cooling during their subsequent exhumation.A few discordant zircon ages,interpreted as late Neoproterozoic and younger,represent minor detrital input from the continent.No evidence is found in favour of the existence of older Arabian continental crust within the metamorphic rocks of the UAE.Nick M.W.Roberts Robert J.Thomas Joachim Jacobs 2016Geoscience Frontiers2016,7,4:2

11Compatibility and complementarity of indigenous and scientific knowledge of wild plants in the highlands of southwest Saudi Arabia显示文摘This study presents a survey of wild plants commonly used by local inhabitants in the highlands of southwest Saudi Arabia. Based upon literature review, direct observation of local inhabitants, and questionnaire interviews, 36 plant species were assessed and given scores according to their use. The gaps between scientific and indigenous knowledge on the use of plants were estimated using a 'compatibility ratio'. The score values were estimated based on seven different use categories of ecosystem services, including food, forage, medicine, wood, beekeeping, research, and education. Additional structural categories include source of materials, shade, hedges, ornamental plantings, and soil stabilization. There are discrepancies between indigenous knowledge(IK) and scientific knowledge(SK) but in most cases, SK of the species supports the IK and plant users preference. The results also provide information that challenges assumptions about the consistency of IK with SK. Our study highlights the importance of understanding the cultural context and uses of wild plants. Biodiversity-based knowledge holds promise for contributing to sustainable use of wild plant resources and related traditions. 15Mobile Robotic Platform for Contactless Vital Sign Monitoring显示文摘The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated methods to faciltate contactless evaluation of patients in hospital sttings.By minimizing in-person contact with individuals who may have COVID 19,healthcare workers can prevent disease transmission and conserve personal protective equipment.Obtaining vital signs is a ubiquitous task that is commonly done in person by healthcare workers.To eliminate the need for in-person contact for vital sign measurement in the hospital setting,we developed Dr.Spot,a mobile quadruped robotic system.The system includes IR and RGB cameras for vital sign monitoring and a tablet computer for face-to-face medical interviewing.Dr.Spot is teleoperated by trained clinical staff to simultaneously measure the skin temperature,respiratory rate,and heart rate while maintaining social distancing from patients and without removing their mask.To enable accurate,contactless measurements on a mobile system without a static black body as reference,we propose novel methods for skin temperature compensation and respiratory rate measurement at various distances between the subject and the cameras,up to 5 m.Without compensation,the skin temperature MAE is 13℃.Using the proposed compensation method,the skin temperature MAE is reduced to 0.3℃.The respiratory rate method can provide continuous monitoring with a MAE of 1.6 BPM in 30s or rapid screening with a MAE of 2.1 BPM in 10s.For the heart rate estimation,our system is able to achieve a MAE less than 8 BPM in 10s measured in arbitrary indoor light conditions at any distance below 2 m.Hen-Wei Huang Jack Chen Peter R.Chai Claas Ehmke Philipp Rupp Farah Z.Dadabhoy Annie Feng Canchen Li Akhil J.Thomas Marco da Silva Edward W.Boyer Giovanni Traverso 2022Cyborg and Bionic Systems2022,,1:0

18Shunting,optic nerve sheath fenestration and dural venous stenting for medically refractory idiopathic intracranial hypertension:systematic review and meta-analysis显示文摘Background:Cerebrospinal fluid(CSF)-diversion procedures have traditionally been the standard of treatment for patients with medically refractive idiopathic intracranial hypertension(IIH).However,dural venous sinus stent(VSS)placement has been described as a safe and effective procedure for the management of medically refractive IIH.We performed a meta-analysis comparing outcomes and complications of CSF-diversion procedures,VSS and optic nerve sheath fenestration(ONSF)for the treatment of medically refractive IIH.Methods:Electronic searches were performed using six databases from 1988 to January 2017.Data was extracted and meta-analysed from the identified studies.Results:From 55 pooled studies,there were 538 CSF-diversion cases,224 dural venous stent placements,and 872 ONSF procedures.Similar improvements were found in terms of postoperative headaches(CSF vs.VSS vs.ONSF:84%vs.78%vs.62%,P=0.223),papilledema(CSF vs.VSS vs.ONSF:71%vs.86%vs.77%,P=0.192),whilst visual acuity changes favored venous stenting(CSF vs.VSS vs.ONSF:55%vs.69%vs.44%,P=0.037).There was a significantly lower rate of subsequent procedures with venous stent placement(CSF vs.VSS vs.ONSF:37%vs.13%vs.18%,P<0.001),but other complication rates were similar(CSF vs.VSS vs.ONSF:13%vs.8%vs.14%,P=0.28).Subgroup analysis of lumbar-peritoneal vs.ventriculoperitoneal shunts found no differences in symptom improvements,complications and subsequent procedure rates.Conclusions:Our findings suggest that dural venous sinus stenting may be a viable alternative to traditional surgical interventions in patients who are refractory to medical treatment.Daniel B.Scherman Adam A.Dmytriw Gia Thanh Nguyen Nhan Thi Nguyen Nana Tchantchaleishvili Julian Maingard Hamed Asadi Mark Brooks Christoph Griessenauer Christopher Ogilvy Ajith J.Thomas Justin M.Moore Kevin Phan 2018Annals of Eye Science2018,,1:0
