2Effect of different pre-sowing treatments on seed germination percentage and growth performance of Acacia auriculiformis显示文摘Seed morphology,germination and seedlings growth of Acacia auriculiformis were studied.The experiment was conducted in the nursery of Forestry and Wood Technology Discipline,Khulna University,Bangladesh.Matured seeds of the species were collected from healthy trees of road side plantation from different areas of Khulna District,Bangladesh and treated with five pre-sowing treatments(control,immersion in cold water,immersion in hot water,scarification with sand paper and immersion in concentrated H2SO4).The average length,breadth and thickness were found to be(0.58±0.017) cm,(0.44±0.007) cm and(0.20±0.089) cm,respectively.Germination was conducted in polybags with a mixture of top soil,coconut husk,coarse sand,and fine sand in a ratio of 3:4:1:1.Results reveal that pre-sowing treatments influences the germination rates of seeds that significantly increase the percentage germination compared with those in control(43%) and cold water treatment(52%).The highest germination success rate was found 83% in hot water treatment followed by 78% in scarification with sand paper,and 75% with immersion in H2SO4.Germination started from 7 to 12 days and completed between 28 and 35 days period in all treatments.ANOVA showed the significant difference(p<0.05) among the treatments in seed germination,but no significant difference among treatment with regard to starting day,closing day and total germination period.In case of height and diameter growth,seedlings originated from the seeds with hot water treatment shows significantly higher in wet season(from May to July).Hot water treatment can be recommended on seed germination of the species in rural Bangladesh.Md.Salim Azad Mizanur Rahman Manik Md.Shamin Hasan Md.Abdul Matin 2011Journal of Forestry Research2011,22,2:10
3A hybrid evolutionary algorithm for distribution feeder reconfiguration显示文摘This paper presents a new method to reduce the distribution system loss by feeder reconfiguration.This new method combines self-adaptive particle swarm optimization(SAPSO) with shuffled frog-leaping algorithm(SFLA) in an attempt to find the global optimal solutions for the distribution feeder reconfiguration(DFR).In PSO algorithm,appropriate adjustment of the parameters is cumbersome and usually requires a lot of time and effort.Thus,a self-adaptive framework is proposed to improve the robustness of PSO.In SAPSO the learning factors of PSO coevolve with the particles.SFLA is combined with the SAPSO algorithm to improve its performance.The proposed algorithm is tested on two distribution test networks.The results of simulation show that the proposed algorithm is very powerful and guarantees to obtain the global optimization in minimum time.Taher NIKNAM Ehsan AZAD FARSANI 2010Science China(Technological Sciences)2010,53,4:10
4Surgery for colorectal liver metastases: The evolution of determining prognosis显示文摘Despite improvements in the multi-modality treatment of colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM), survival after resection remains varied. Determining prognosis after surgical resection has historically been predicated on preoperative clinicopathological factors such as primary tumor stage, carcinoembryonic antigen levels, number of liver metastases, presence of extrahepatic disease, as well as other factors. While scoring systems have been developed by combining certain preoperative fac- tors, these have been inconsistent in accurately deter- mining prognosis. There has been increasing interest in the use of biologic and molecular markers to predict prognosis following CRLM. The role of markers such as KRAS, BRAF, p53, human telomerase reverse transcrip- tase, thymidylate synthase, Ki-67, and hypoxia inducible factor-1α and their correlation with accurately predict- ing survival after surgical resection have been sup- ported by several studies. 7Visual performance of four types of diffractive multifocal intraocular lenses and a review of articles显示文摘AIM: To compare the clinical outcomes of a variety of multifocal intraocular lenses(MIOLs) in patients diagnosed with presbyopia or cataracts. METHODS: This clinical trial study included 141 patients(282 eyes) with different MIOLs implantation. The Symfony(60 eyes), the Re STOR(100 eyes), the AT LISAtri(60 eyes), and the Pan Optix(62 eyes) intraocular lenses were evaluated in this prospective interventional study. The near, intermediate, and distant visual acuities, contrast sensitivity, and defocus curve were measured as valid criteria. To statistically analyze the results, we used the Statistical Package for Social Science software, the non-parametric Wilcoxon signed-rank t, the one-way analysis of variance and the Tukey’s post-hoc test in our analysis. Moreover, we conducted a detailed literature search on the Pub Med database in English about MIOLs, in total 59 studies were included in this review article.RESULTS: The four approaches did not show any significant difference in the best-corrected distance visual acuity(P>0.05). The defocus curves at the contrast of 100% showed that trifocal IOLs had better intermediate performance than the bifocal IOL(P<0.05). There were no statistically significant differences between AT LISAtri and Pan Optix lenses for visual acuity at all distances. The eyes with Pan Optix, Symfony, and AT LISAtri IOL showed better contrast sensitivity than those Re STOR at spatial frequencies of 1, 3, and 6 cpd in photopic and mesopic conditions(P<0.001). CONCLUSION: All four groups of the multifocal lenses were satisfying in terms of distance and near vision. 8Traveling wave solutions to some nonlinear fractional partial differential equations through the rational(G'/G)-expansion method显示文摘In this article,the analytical solutions to the space-time fractional foam drainage equation and the space-time fractional symmetric regu-larized long wave(SRLW)equation are successfully examined by the recently established rational(G/G)-expansion method.The suggested equations are reduced into the nonlinear ordinary differential equations with the aid of the fractional complex transform.Consequently,the theories of the ordinary differential equations are implemented effectively.Three types closed form traveling wave solutions,such as hyper-bolic function,trigonometric function and rational,are constructed by using the suggested method in the sense of conformable fractional derivative.The obtained solutions might be significant to analyze the depth and spacing of parallel subsurface drain and small-amplitude long wave on the surface of the water in a channel.It is observed that the performance of the rational(G/G)-expansion method is reliable and will be used to establish new general closed form solutions for any other NPDEs of fractional order.Tarikul Islam M.Ali Akbar Abul Kalam Azad 2018Journal of Ocean Engineering and Science2018,3,1:5

10Soil fixation and erosion control by Haloxylon persicum roots in arid lands, Iran显示文摘Vegetation roots contribute to soil fixation and reinforcement, thus improving soil resistance against erosion. Generally, the amount of soil fixation presented by roots mainly depends on root density and tensile strength. In the present study, we conducted the research in order to further understand the biotechnical properties of Haloxylon persicum and also to quantify its role in increasing soil cohesion in arid lands of Iran. Ten H. persicum shrubs were randomly selected for root distribution and strength investigations, in which five samples were set on flat terrain and other five samples on a moderate slope terrain. The profile trench method was used to assess the root area ratio(RAR) as the index of root density and distribution. Two profiles were dug around each sample, up and downslope for sloped treatment and north and south sides for flat treatment. The results showed that RAR increased with increasing soil depth and significantly decreased in 40–50 cm layers of downhill(0.320%) and 50–60 cm for uphill(0.210%). The minimum values for the northward and southward profiles were 0.003% and 0.003%, respectively, while the maximum values were 0.260% and 0.040%, respectively. The relationship between the diameter of root samples and root tensile strength followed a negative power function, but tensile force increased with increasing root diameter following a positive power function. The pattern of increased cohesion changes in soil profile was relatively similar to RAR curves. The maximum increased cohesion due to the presence of roots in uphill and downhill sides were 0.470 and 1.400 kPa, respectively. In the flat treatment, the maximum increased cohesions were 0.570 and 0.610 kPa in northward and southward profiles, respectively. The analysis of variance showed that wind and slope induced stresses did not have any significant effect on the amount of increased cohesion of H. persicum. 12Effects of variation in seed sources and pre-sowing treatments on seed germination of Tamarindus indica: a multi-purpose tree species in Bangladesh显示文摘We investigated the morphology and germination of Tamarindus indica seeds in order to discover the effects of variation in seed sources and pre-sowing treatments on germination. The experiment was carried out in the nursery of the Forestry and Wood Technology Discipline, Khulna University, Bangladesh. Seeds were collected from different but healthy trees from various locations in Bangladesh and subjected to four pre-sowing treatments, i.e., control, immersion in cold water (4°C for 24 h), immersion in hot water (80°C for 10 min) and scarification with sand paper. Seed germination was carried out in poly-bags with a mixture of topsoil and cow dung in the ratio of 3:1. The average length of the fresh seeds was 1.35±0.26 cm, their width 1.07 ±0.20 cm and thickness 0.69±0.11 cm. The results revealed that pre-sowing treatments affected the germination process of seeds, which significantly increased the germination percentage with the cold water (81.67%) and scarification with sand paper (82.33%) treatments, compared with those in the control (58.33%) and hot water treatment (59.00%). In all treatments germination started on average within 5 to 7 days after the start of the treatments and were completed from 13 to 19 days later. The greatest success in germination (82.33%) was found in scarification with sand paper, followed with 81.67% in the cold water treatment. The results of analyses of variance (ANOVA) showed significant differences (p<0.05) in germination closing dates, seed germination periods and germination percentages among the treatments but no significant difference among seed sources. However, the effect of the interaction between seed source variation and pre-treatment differed significantly in seed germination closing dates and germination percentages. We recommend cold water treatment (submersion of seed at a temperature of 4°C for a 24-h period) for seed germination of T. indica in rural Bangladesh.Md. Salim AZAD Nurun NAHAR Md. 15In vivo anticancer activity of vanillin semicarbazone显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the anticancer activity of vanillin semicarbazone(VSC) against Ehrlich ascites carcinoma(EAC) cells in Swiss albino mice.Methods:The compound VSC at three doses(5, 7.5 and 10 mg/kg i.p.) was administered into the intraperitoneal cavity of the EAC inoculated mice to observe its efficiency by studying the cell growth inhibition, reduction of tumour weight,enhancement of survival time as well as the changes in depleted hematological parameters. Allsuch parameters were also studied with a known standard drug bleomycin at the dose of 0.3 mg/kg(i.p.).Results:Among the doses studied, 10 mg/kg(i.p.) was found to be quite comparable in potency to that of bleomycin at the dose of 0.3 mg/kg(i.p.). 16Seed germination of Albizia procera(Roxb.)Benth.in Bangladesh:a basis for seed source variation and pre-sowing treatment effect显示文摘An experiment in seed morphology and seed germination techniques of Albizia procera was carried out in the nursery of the Forestry and Wood Technology Discipline,Khulna University,Bangladesh in order to discover the source variation in seeds and pre-sowing treatment effects on seed germination.Mature seeds of A.procera were collected from healthy trees in home garden plantations from five different districts in Bangladesh and treated with four pre-sowing treatments,i.e.,control,immersion in cold water (4°C for 24 h)and immersion in hot water(80°C for 10 min and 100°C for 1 min).The average length,width and thickness of seeds were calculated as 0.502±0.485,0.420±0.060 and 0.191±0.118 cm,respectively.Germination was conducted in poly-bags with a mixture of topsoil and cow dung in a ratio of 3:1.The results revealed that pre-sowing treatments affected the rate of germination of seeds,which significantly increased the germination percentages of seeds in hot water treatments compared with those in control (60.60%)and the cold water treatment(4°C for 24 h,63.53%).The highest germination success was 82.07%in the treatment of immersion in hot water(80°C)for 10 min,followed by 79.00%in immersion in hot water(100°C)for 1 min.Germination started 4 to 6 days after seed sowing and completed in a period of 22 to 25 days in all treatments.ANOVAs showed statistically significant differences(p<0.05)in seed germination starting dates,closing dates,germination percentages and rates of germination among treatments,but no significant differences in seed germination starting dates,closing dates,germination period,germination percentages and rates of germination among the seed sources.The study also revealed that the interaction between seed source variation and treatment effect significantly differed in seed germination starting dates,closing dates,germination percentages and rates of germination. 20Genetically engineered organisms for bioremediation of pollutants in contaminated sites显示文摘Environmental pollution is a major problem which affects biodiversity,public health and ecosystems worldwide.This issue cannot currently be solved using conventional technology because these treatments are expensive,ineffective and time consuming.Conventional methods focus unduly on the separation,rather than the destruction of contaminants.The use of genetically engineered organisms for bioremediation would be an environmentally-friendly and cost-effective alternative for the management and remediation of pollutants in contaminated sites.Different types of genetically engineered microbes have been developed through recombinant DNA and RNA technologies,these have been utilized for the removal of heavy metals and toxic substances from contaminated sites.Transgenic plants can also mobilize or degrade chlorinated solvent,xenobiotic compounds,explosives and phenolic substances.A symbiotic relationship between genetic engineered microbes and transgenic plants can enhance the effectiveness of bioremediation of contaminated sites.This review examines recent developments in the use of genetically engineered microbes and transgenic plants for the bioremediation of contaminated sites.This review will also identify the environmental factors which influence bioremediation by genetically engineered microbes and transgenic plants as well as suggesting future directions for research in these areas.Md.Abul Kalam Azad Latifah Amin Nik Marzuki Sidik 2014Chinese Science Bulletin2014,59,8:2
