Antibacterial activity of honey against clinical isolates of Escherichia coli,Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi显示文摘Objective:To ascertain the potential antibacterial activity of honey against clinical isolates of Escherichia coli(E.coli),Pseudomonas aeruginosa(P.aeruginosa) and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi(S.enterica serovar Typhi) by in vitro methods. Methods:The partial inhibitory concentration(PIC),minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration(MBC) values of the autoclaved honey(extracted from Apis indica hive by indigenous method) were determined for S.enterica serovar Typhi(n=8:from blood cultute), E.coli(n=5:from urine culture) and P.aeruginosa(n=5:from pus culture) isolates by in vitro methods. Results:The PICs of the honey tested for the isolates ranged 0.50%-1.25%(v/v) for S. enterica serovar Typhi,0.75%-1.50%(v/v) for E.coli and 1.00%-1.25%(v/v) for P.aeruginosa, while the MICs ranged 1.75%-3.00%(v/v),3.00%-3.50%(v/v) and 3.50%(v/v),respectively.The P.aeruginosa and E.coli isolates had MBC value of 4.00%(v/v):the S.enterica serovar Typhi showed MBCs in between 3.00%and 3.50%(v/v).The bactericidal activity of honey was achieved at concentration 3.00%(v/v) for S.enterica serovar Typhi and E.coli, and at 3.50%(v/v) for P. aeruginosa. Conclusions:The excellent antibacterial activity of honey against clinical bacterial isolates indicates the usefulness of honey in clinical practice against bacterial infection.Shyamapada Mandal Manisha DebMandal Nishith Kumar Pal Krishnendu Saha 2010Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2010,3,12:8
Synergistic anti - Staphylococcus aureus activity of amoxicillin in combination with Emblica officinalis and Nymphae odorata extracts显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the antibacterial activity of Emblica officinalis Gaertn(E.officinalis: Family:Euphorbiaceae) seed and Nymphae odorala Aiton(N.odorala:Family:Nymphaeaceae) stamen extracts, alone and in combination, and in combination with amoxicillin(Ax) against Staphylococcus aureus(S.aureus).Methods:Antibacterial activity of ethanolic extracts of amla,E.officinalis,seed(AMS:500μg) and sapla,N.odorala,stamen(SAP:500 p g) for 12 methicillin-resistant S.aureus(MRSA) isolates was determined following agar diffusion:in order to assess the combined antibacterial activity,AMS(250μg) plus SAP(250μg) were considered. The Ax(10μg) activity alone and in combination with AMS(250μg),and SAP(250μg) was determined by disk diffusion. The zone diameters of inhibition(ZDIs) for the agents were recorded, and growth inhibitory indices(GIIs) were calculated. Results:The MRSA isolates (n=12) had AMS(500μg) and SAP(500μg) ZDIs of 12-19 mm and 21-24 mm,respectively. The ZDIs(range 24-27 mm) increased by 3-4 mm due to combined action of AMS(250μg) and SAP(250μg) indicating synergy between extracts for MRSA(GII 0.634-0.742).The MRSA isolates were resistant to Ax(ZDI:8-11 mm),which in combination with AMS and SAP had synergistic effect, both due to increased ZDI[mean±SD=(3.5±0.577) mm]and GII(0.631-0.894).Conclusions:The data suggest that the plants,E.officinalis and N.odorala alone or in combination, are promising in the development of phytomedicines, which may be used, alone or in combination with the antibiotic. 3Unsteady boundary layer flow and heat transfer over an exponentially shrinking sheet with suction in a copper-water nanofluid显示文摘An analysis of unsteady boundary layer flow and heat transfer over an exponentially shrinking porous sheet filled with a copper-water nanofluid is presented.Water is treated as a base fluid. In the investigation,non-uniform mass suction through the porous sheet is considered.Using Keller-box method the transformed equations are solved numerically. The results of skin friction coefficient, the local Nusselt number as well as the velocity and temperature profiles are presented for different flow parameters. The results showed that the dual non-similar solutions exist only when certain amount of mass suction is applied through the porous sheet for various unsteady parameters and nanoparticle volume fractions. The ranges of suction where dual non-similar solution exists, become larger when values of unsteady parameter as well as nanoparticle volume fraction increase. So,due to unsteadiness of flow dynamics and the presence of nanoparticles in flow field, the requirement of mass suction for existence of solution of boundary layer flow past an exponentially shrinking sheet is less.Furthermore, the velocity boundary layer thickness decreases and thermal boundary layer thickness increases with increasing of nanoparticle volume fraction in both non-similar solutions.Whereas, for stronger mass suction, the velocity boundary layer thickness becomes thinner for the first solution and the effect is opposite in the case of second solution. The temperature inside the boundary layer increases with nanoparticle volume fraction and decreases with mass suction. So,for the unsteadiness and for the presence of nanoparticles, the flow separation is delayed to some extent.Aurang Zaib Krishnendu Bhattacharyya Sharidan Shafie 2015Journal of Central South University2015,22,12:6
Boundary Layer Flow and Heat Transfer over an Exponentially Shrinking Sheet显示文摘An analysis is made to study boundary layer flow and heat transfer over an exponentially shrinking sheet.Using similarity transformations in exponential form, the governing boundary layer equations are transformed into self-similar nonlinear ordinary differential equations, which are then solved numerically using a very efficient shooting method. The analysis reveals the conditions for the existence of steady boundary layer flow due to exponential shrinking of the sheet and it is found that when the mass suction parameter exceeds a certain critical value, steady flow is possible. The dual solutions for velocity and temperature distributions are obtained. With increasing values of the mass suction parameter, the skin friction coefficient increases for the first solution and decreases for the second solution.Krishnendu Bhattacharyya 2011Chinese Physics Letters2011,28,7:6

Slip Effects on an Unsteady Boundary Layer Stagnation-Point Flow and Heat Transfer towards a Stretching Sheet显示文摘An analysis is presented for an unsteady boundary layer stagnation-point flow of a Newtonian fluid and the heat transfer towards a stretching sheet taking non-conventional partial slip conditions at the sheet. The self-similar equations are obtained using similarity transformations and solved numerically by the shooting method.Effects of the parameters involved in the equations, especially velocity slip and thermal slip parameters on the velocity and temperature profiles, are analyzed extensively. It is revealed that due to the velocity and thermal slip parameters, the rate of heat transfer from the sheet and the wall skin friction change significantly.Krishnendu Bhattacharyya Swati Mukhopadhyay G.C.Layek 2011Chinese Physics Letters2011,28,9:4
Physiological Basis of Stagnant Flooding Tolerance in Rice显示文摘Stagnant flooding(SF) is an important constraint which prolonges partial submergence damages of rice plants and reduces grain yield. Due to the heterogeneity in flood-prone ecosystem, many different types of traditional rice varieties are being grown by the farmers. The local landraces adapted to extreme in water availability could be the sources of new gene(s) which would be utilized to improve the adaptability of rice to SF with high yield. The main goal of this study is to identify new genetic resources tolerant to SF based on morpho-physiological traits. A total of 16 rice varieties were selected after initial screening from more than 400 rice varieties which were collected from eastern states of India. The increase rate of plant height was higher under SF compared to control, whereas no such trend was observed in the increment rate of aboveground total dry weight and culm dry weight. Area of aerenchyma gas spaces per tiller increased whereas root oxidase activity decreased under SF. The reduction of root oxidase activity, leaf area, and leaf dry weight was higher in susceptible varieties under SF compared to control. Stability index for different grain yield and yield attributes revealed that the impact of SF differed among different varieties. Correlation coefficient studies among different parameters taking stability index showed significant association with the grain yield. Based on the findings, it was concluded that maintenance of equivalent panicle weight and panicle number, plant height and harvest index at the maturity stage, leaf area, leaf and culm dry weights, root oxidase activity and tiller numbers at the flowering stage under SF compared to control help the plant to counteract the adverse effects of SF.Sandhya R.KUANAR Anuprita RAY Santosh K.SETHI Krishnendu CHATTOPADHYAY Ramani K.SARKAR 2017Rice science2017,24,2:4
MHD Boundary Layer Slip Flow and Heat Transfer over a Flat Plate显示文摘An analysis of magnetohydrodynamic(MHD)boundary layer flow and heat transfer over a flat plate with slip condition at the boundary is presented.A complete self-similar set of equations are obtained from the governing equations using similarity transformations and are solved by a shooting method. In the boundary slip condition no local similarity occurs.Velocity and temperature distributions within the boundary layer are presented. Our analysis reveals that the increase of magnetic and slip parameters reduce the boundary layer thickness and also enhance the heat transfer from the plate.Krishnendu Bhattacharyya Swati Mukhopadhyay G.C.Layek 2011Chinese Physics Letters2011,28,2:2
Dual Solutions in Unsteady Stagnation-Point Flow over a Shrinking Sheet显示文摘An analysis is made to study the dual nature of solution of unsteady stagnation-point flow due to a shrinking sheet.Using similarity transformations, the governing boundary layer equations are transformed into the self-similar nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The transformed equations are solved numerically using a very efficient shooting method. The study reveals the conditions of existence, uniqueness and non-existence of unsteady similarity solution. The dual solutions for velocity distribution exist for certain values of velocity ratio parameter(c/a),and the increment in the unsteadiness parameter A increases the range of c/a where solution exists. Also, with increasing A,the skin friction coefficient increases for the first solution and decreases for the second.Krishnendu Bhattacharyya 2011Chinese Physics Letters2011,28,8:1

Heat transfer in boundary layer stagnation-point flow towards a shrinking sheet with non-uniform heat flux显示文摘In this paper, the effect of non-uniform heat flux on heat transfer in boundary layer stagnation-point flow over a shrinking sheet is studied. The variable boundary heat fluxes are considered of two types: direct power-law variation with the distance along the sheet and inverse power-law variation with the distance. The governing partial differential equations (PDEs) are transformed into non linear self-similar ordinary differential equations (ODEs) by similarity transformations, and then those are solved using very efficient shooting method. The direct variation and inverse variation of heat flux along the sheet have completely different effects on the temperature distribution. Moreover, the heat transfer characteristics in the presence of non-uniform heat flux for several values of physical parameters are also found to be interesting.Krishnendu Bhattacharyya 2013Chinese Physics B2013,22,7:1
