3A complete compilation of matrix metalloproteinase expression in human malignant gliomas显示文摘Glioblastomas are characterized by an aggressive local growth pattern, a marked degree of invasiveness and poor prognosis. Tumor invasiveness is facilitated by the increased activity of proteolytic enzymes which are involved in destruction of the extracellular matrix of the surrounding healthy brain tissue. Elevated levels of matrix metalloproteinases(MMPs) were found in glioblastoma(GBM) cell-lines, as well as in GBM biopsies as compared with low-grade astrocytoma(LGA) and normal brain samples, indicating a role in malignant progression. A careful review of the available literature revealed that both the expression and role of several of the 23 human MMP proteins is controversely discussed and for some there are no data available at all. We therefore screened a panel of 15 LGA and 15 GBM biopsy samples for those MMPs for which there is either no, very limited or even contradictory dataavailable. Hence, this is the first complete compilation of the expression pattern of all 23 human MMPs in astrocytic tumors. 6Minimally invasive knee arthroplasty: An overview显示文摘Minimally invasive surgery(MIS) for arthroplasty of the knee began with surgery for unicondylar knee arthroplasty(UKA).Partial knee replacements were designed in the 1970 s and were amenable to a more limited exposure.In the 1990 s Repicci popularized the MIS for UKA.Surgeons began to apply his concepts to total knee arthroplasty.Four MIS surgical techniques were developed: quadriceps sparing,mini-mid vastus,mini-subvastus,and minimedial parapatellar.The quadriceps sparing technique is the most limited one and is also the most difficult.However,it is the least invasive and allows rapid recovery.The mini-midvastus is the most common technique because it affords slightly better exposure and can be extended.The mini-subvastus technique entirely avoids incising the quadriceps extensor mechanism but is time consuming and difficult in the obese and in the muscular male patient.The mini-parapatellar technique is most familiar to surgeons and represents a good starting point for surgeons who are learning the techniques.The surgeries are easier with smaller instruments but can be performed with standard ones.The techniques are accurate and do lead to a more rapid recovery,with less pain,less blood loss,and greater motion if they are appropriately performed.Alfred J Tria Giles R Scuderi 2015World Journal of Orthopedics2015,6,10:7
7Characterization of volatiles Tribolium castaneum(H.)in flour using solid phase microextraction–gas chromatography mass spectrometry(SPME–GCMS)显示文摘The objective of this study was to identify volatile organic compounds(VOCs)from flour,Tribolium castaneum(Herbst)and flour infested by T.castaneum separately,to confirm the difference of healthy flour and flour infested by T.castaneum and to explore the new technique to diagnose stored flour’s quality by its VOCs change.Headspace-solid phase microextraction(HS-SPME)coupled with gas chromatography(GC)and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry(GC–MS)were used to detect the VOCs of three different samples.Totally,71 different compounds were identified in flour,T.castaneum and T.castaneum infested flour.Therefore,27 VOCs were identified from flour alone,32 VOCs from T.castaneum and 39 VOCs from T.castaneum infested flour.The compound 2-ethyl-2,5-cyclohexadiene-1,4-dione is only found in T.castaneum infested flour.This suggests that 2-ethyl-2,5-cyclohexadiene-1,4-dione can be a useful VOC for detecting T.castaneum in flour.Yonghao Niu Giles Hardy Manjree Agarwal Lei Hua Yonglin Ren 2016Food Science and Human Wellness2016,5,1:6
8Targeting chronic lymphocytic leukemia cells in the tumor microenviroment: A review of the in vitro and clinical trials to date显示文摘Chronic lymphocytic leukemia(CLL) is the most common leukemia in the western world. Despite significantadvances in therapy over the last decade CLL remains incurable. Current front-line therapy often consists of chemoimmunotherapy-based regimens, most commonly the fludarabine, cyclophosphamide plus rituximab combination, but rates of relapse and refractory disease are high among these patients. Several key signaling pathways are now known to mediate the survival and proliferation of CLL cells in vivo, the most notable of which are the pathways mediated by the B-cell receptor(BCR) and cytokine receptors. A better understanding of the pathogenesis of the disease, the underlying biology of the CLL-cell and the roles of the tumour microenvironment has provided the rationale for trials of a range of novel, more targeted therapeutic agents. In particular, clinical trials of ibrutinib and idelalisib, which target the Brutons tyrosine kinase and the delta isoform of phosphoinositol-3 kinase components of the BCR signaling pathway respectively, have shown extremely promising results. Here we review the current literature on the key signaling pathways and interactions of CLL cells that mediate the survival and proliferation of the leukemic cells. 14The next detectors for gravitational wave astronomy显示文摘This paper focuses on the next detectors for gravitational wave astronomy which will be required after the current ground based detectors have completed their initial observations, and probably achieved the first direct detection of gravitational waves. The next detectors will need to have greater sensitivity, while also enabling the world array of detectors to have improved angular resolution to allow localisation of signal sources. Sect. 1 of this paper begins by reviewing proposals for the next ground based detectors,and presents an analysis of the sensitivity of an 8 km armlength detector, which is proposed as a safe and cost-effective means to attain a 4-fold improvement in sensitivity. The scientific benefits of creating a pair of such detectors in China and Australia is emphasised. Sect. 2 of this paper discusses the high performance suspension systems for test masses that will be an essential component for future detectors, while sect. 3 discusses solutions to the problem of Newtonian noise which arise from fluctuations in gravity gradient forces acting on test masses. Such gravitational perturbations cannot be shielded, and set limits to low frequency sensitivity unless measured and suppressed. Sects. 4 and 5 address critical operational technologies that will be ongoing issues in future detectors. Sect. 4 addresses the design of thermal compensation systems needed in all high optical power interferometers operating at room temperature. Parametric instability control is addressed in sect. 5. Only recently proven to occur in Advanced LIGO, parametric instability phenomenon brings both risks and opportunities for future detectors. The path to future enhancements of detectors will come from quantum measurement technologies. 16Spinal manipulation therapy: Is it all about the brain? A current review of the neurophysiological effects of manipulation显示文摘Spinal manipulation has been an effective intervention for the management of various musculoskeletal disorders. However,the mechanisms underlying the pain modulatory effects of spinal manipulation remain elusive. Although both biomechanical and neurophysiological phenomena have been thought to play a role in the observed clinical effects of spinal manipulation, a growing number of recent studies have indicated peripheral, spinal and supraspinal mechanisms of manipulation and suggested that the improved clinical outcomes are largely of neurophysiological origin. In this article, we reviewed the relevance of various neurophysiological theories with respect to the findings of mechanistic studies that demonstrated neural responses following spinal manipulation. This article also discussed whether these neural responses are associated with the possible neurophysiological mechanisms of spinal manipulation. The body of literature reviewed herein suggested some clear neurophysiological changes following spinal manipulation, which include neural plastic changes, alteration in motor neuron excitability,increase in cortical drive and many more. However, the clinical relevance of these changes in relation to the mechanisms that underlie the effectiveness of spinal manipulation is still unclear. In addition,there were some major methodological flaws in many of the reviewed studies. 17Terahertz endoscopic imaging for colorectal cancer detection:Current status and future perspectives显示文摘Terahertz(THz) imaging is progressing as a robust platform for myriad applications in the field of security,health,and material science.The THz regime,which comprises wavelengths spanning from microns to millimeters,is non-ionizing and has very low photon energy:Making it inherently safe for biological imaging.Colorectal cancer is one of the most common causes of death in the world,while the conventional screening and standard of care yet relies exclusively on the physician's experience.Researchers have been working on the development of a flexible THz endoscope,as a potential tool to aid in colorectal cancer screening.This involves building a single-channel THz endoscope,and profiling the THz response from colorectal tissue,and demonstrating endogenous contrast levels between normal and diseased tissue when imaging in reflection modality.The current level of contrast provided by the prototype THz endoscopic system represents a significant step towards clinical endoscopic application of THz technology for invivo colorectal cancer screening.The aim of this paper is to provide a short review of the recent advances in THz endoscopic technology and cancer imaging.In particular,the potential of single-channel THz endoscopic imaging for colonic cancer screening will be highlighted.Pallavi Doradla Cecil Joseph Robert H Giles 2017World Journal of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy2017,9,8:3
