1Interactive Effects of Elevated CO_2 and Growth Temperature on the Tolerance of Photosynthesis to Acute Heat Stress in C_3 and C_4 Species显示文摘Determining effects of elevated CO2 on the tolerance of photosynthesis to acute heat-stress (heat wave) is necessary for predicting plant responses to global warming,as photosynthesis is thermolabile and acute heat-stress and atmospheric CO2 will increase in the future.Few studies have examined this,and past results are variable,which may be due to methodological variation.To address this,we grew two C3 and two C4 species at current or elevated CO2 and three different growth temperatures (GT).We assessed photosynthetic thermotolerance in both unacclimated (basal tolerance) and preheat-stressed (preHS=acclimated) plants.In C3 species,basal thermotolerance of net photosynthesis (Pn) was increased in high CO2,but in C4 species,Pn thermotlerance was decreased by high CO2 (except Zea mays at low GT); CO2 effects in preHS plants were mostly small or absent,though high CO2 was detrimental in one C3 and one C4 species at warmer GT.Though high CO2 generally decreased stomatal conductance,decreases in Pn during heat stress were mostly due to non-stomatal effects.Photosystem Ⅱ (PSⅡ efficiency was often decreased by high CO2 during heat stress,especially at high GT; CO2 effects on post-PSII electron transport were variable.Thus,high CO2 often affected photosynthetic theromotolerance,and the effects varied with photosynthetic pathway,growth temperature,and acclimation state.Most importantly,in heat-stressed plants at normal or warmer growth temperatures,high CO2 may often decrease,or not benefit as expected,tolerance of photosynthesis to acute heat stress.Therefore,interactive effects of elevated CO2 and warmer growth temperatures on acute heat tolerance may contribute to future changes in plant productivity,distribution,and diversity.E. 2Geotechnical risk management to prevent coal outburst in room-and-pillar mining显示文摘A coal outburst is a severe safety hazard in room-and-pillar mining under deep cover. It is more likely to occur during pillar retreating. Multi-seam mining dramatically increases the risk of coal outburst within the influence zones created by remnant pillars and gob-solid boundaries. Though coal outburst is generally associated with heavy loading of coal pillars,its occurrence is difficult to predict. Risk management provides a proactive tool to minimize coal outburst in room-and-pillar mining under deep cover. Risk assessment is the first step in identifying and quantifying outburst risk factors. The primary risk factors for coal outburst are overburden depth,roof and floor strength,geological anomalies,mining type,multi-seam mining,and panel width. A risk assessment chart can be used to proactively screen out mining sections with high risk of coal outburst for further analysis. Gob-solid boundaries and remnant pillars are critical factors in evaluation of the coal outburst risk of multi-seam mining. Risk identification,risk assessment,geologic influence mapping,geotechnical evaluation,risk analysis,risk mitigation,and monitoring are essential elements of coal outburst risk management process. 3Phylogenetic inferences in Prunus (Rosaceae) using chloroplast ndhF and nuclear ribosomal ITS sequences显示文摘Sequences of the chloroplast ndhF gene and the nuclear ribosomal ITS regions are employed to recon-struct the phylogeny of Prunus (Rosaceae), and evaluate the classification schemes of this genus. The two data sets are congruent in that the genera Prunus s.l. and Maddenia form a monophyletic group, with Maddenia nested within Prunus. However, the ndhF data set is incongruent with the ITS data supporting two major groups within Prunus: one consisting of subgenera Laurocerasus (including Pygeum) and Padus as well as the genus Maddenia and another of subgenera Amygdalus, Cerasus, and Prunus. The ITS data, on the other hand, support a clade composed of subgenera Amygdalus and Prunus and Prunus sect. Microcerasus in addition to a paraphyletic grade of subgenera Laurocerasus and Padus (and the genus Maddenia) taxa. In general, the subgeneric classifications of Prunus s.l. are not supported. The ITS and ndhF phylogenies differ mainly in interspecific relationships and the relative position of the Padus/Laurocerasus group. Both ITS and ndhF data sets suggest that the formerly recog-nized genus Pygeum is polyphyletic and that the distinction of the subgenera Padus and Laurocerasus is not supported. The biogeographic interactions of the temperate and tropical members in the Padus/Laurocera- sus/Maddenia alliance including Pygeum are shown to be highly dynamic and complex.Jun WEN Scott T. 5Effects of N on Plant Response to Heat-wave:A Field Study with Prairie Vegetation显示文摘More intense,more frequent,and longer heat-waves are expected in the future due to global warming,which could have dramatic ecological impacts.Increasing nitrogen (N) availability and its dynamics will likely impact plant responses to heat stress and carbon (C) sequestration in terrestrial ecosystems.This field study examined the effects of N availability on plant response to heat-stress (HS) treatment in naturally-occurring vegetation.HS (5 d at ambient or 40.5 ?C) and N treatments (±N) were applied to 16 1 m2 plots in restored prairie vegetation dominated by Andropogon gerardii (warm-season C4 grass) and Solidago canadensis (warm-season C3 forb).Before,during,and after HS,air,canopy,and soil temperature were monitored; net CO2 assimilation (Pn),quantum yield of photosystem II (PSII),stomatal conductance (gs),and leaf water potential (w) of the dominant species and soil respiration (Rsoil) of each plot were measured daily during HS.One week after HS,plots were harvested,and C% and N% were determined for rhizosphere and bulk soil,and above-ground tissue (green/senescent leaf,stem,and flower).Photosynthetic N-use efficiency (PNUE) and N resorption rate (NRR) were calculated.HS decreased Pn,gs,w,and PNUE for both species,and +N treatment generally increased these variables (±HS),but often slowed their post-HS recovery.Aboveground biomass tended to decrease with HS in both species (and for green leaf mass in S.canadensis),but decrease with +N for A.gerardii and increase with +N for S.canadensis.For A.gerardii,HS tended to decrease N% in green tissues with +N,whereas in S.canadensis,HS increased N% in green leaves.Added N decreased NRR for A.gerardii and HS increased NRR for S.canadensis.These results suggest that heat waves,though transient,could have significant effects on plants,communities,and ecosystem N cycling,and N can influence the effect of heat waves.Dan Wang Scott A.
