1Osteopontin as potential biomarker and therapeutic target in gastric and liver cancers显示文摘Gastric cancer and liver cancer are among the most common malignancies and the leading causes of death worldwide,due to late detection and high recurrence rates.Today,these cancers have a heavy socioeconomic burden,for which a full understanding of their pathophysiological features is warranted to search for promising biomarkers and therapeutic targets.Osteopontin (OPN) is overexpressed in most patients with gastric and liver cancers.Over the past decade,emerging evidence has revealed a correlation of OPN level and clinicopathological features and prognosis in gastric and liver cancers,indicating its potential as an independent prognostic indicator in such patients.Functional studies have verified the potential of OPN knockdown as a therapeutic approach in vitro and in vivo .Furthermore,OPN mediates multifaceted roles in the interaction between cancer cells and the tumor microenvironment,in which many details need further exploration.OPN signaling results in various functions,including prevention of apoptosis,modulation of angiogenesis,malfunction of tumor-associated macrophages,degradation of extracellular matrix,activation of phosphoinositide 3-kinase-Akt and nuclear factor-κB pathways,which lead to tumor formation and progression,particularly in gastric and liver cancers.This editorial aims to review recent findings on alteration in OPN expression and its clinicopathological associations with tumor progression,its potential as a therapeutic target,and putative mechanisms in gastric and liver cancers.Better understanding of the implications of OPN in tumorigenesis might facilitate development of therapeutic regimens to benefit patients with these deadly malignancies.Dong-Xing Cao Zhi-Jie Li Xiao-Ou Jiang Yick Liang Lum Ester Khin Nikki P Lee Guo-Hao Wu John M Luk 2012World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,30:29
2Anti-fungal and anti-bacterial activities of ethanol extracts of selected traditional Chinese medicinal herbs显示文摘Objective:To evaluate in ritro antimicrobial activities of selected 58 ethno-medicinal plant extracts with a view to assess their therapeutic potential.Methods:A total of 58 traditional Chinese medicinal plants were carefully selected based on the literature review and their traditional use.The antimicrobial activities of ethanol extracts of these medicinal plants were tested against fungi(Aspergillus funigaius),yeast(Candida albicans),gram-negative(Acirelobacter haumannii and Pseudornnruis aeruginosa)and gram-positive bacteria(Staphglococcus aureus).The activities were tested at three different concentrations of 1.00,0.10 and 0.01 mg/mL.The data was analysed using Gene data Screener program.Results:The measured antimicrobial activities indicated that out of the 58 plant extracts,15 extracts showed anti-fungal activity and 23 extracts exhibited anti-bacterial activity.Eight plant extracts have exhibited both anti-bacterial and anti-fungal activities.For instance,Eucommia ulmoides,Pohgonum cuspidcrtum,Poria cocas and Uncaria rhineophylla showed activity against both bacterial and fungal strains,indicating their broad spectrum of activity.Conclusions:The results revealed that the ethanol extracts of 30 plants out of the selected 58 possess significant antimicrobial activities.It is interesting to note that the findings from the current study are consistent with the traditional use.A clear correlation has also been found between the antimicrobial activity and the flavonoid content of the plant extracts which is in agreement with the literature.Hence.the results presented here can be used to guide the selection of potential plant species for the isolation and structure elucidation of novel antimicrobial compounds in order to establish the structure-activity relationship.This in turn is expected to lead the way to the discovery of novel antimicrobial agents for therapeutic use.Lin Zhang Anjaneya S.Ravipati Sundar R Koyyalamudi Sang Chul Jeong Narsimha Reddy John Bartlett Paul T.Smith Mercedes de la Cruz Maria Cndida Monteiro ngeles Melguizo Ester Jimnez Francisca Vicente 2013Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2013,6,9:23

4养殖三疣梭子蟹体内哈维氏弧菌的分离与致病性鉴定显示文摘养殖的三疣梭子蟹(Portunus trituberculatus)秋、冬季常发生非典型症状的死亡.本研究取濒死的三疣梭子蟹内脏及体腔液进行细菌分离,经纯化传代获得1株优势菌HY.HY菌的革兰氏染色呈阴性,菌体呈杆状、弧形或逗点状,无荚膜,无芽孢,极生单鞭毛,运动性强.生长特性和生化试验表明该菌生长需盐,最适生长的NaCl含量为30 mg/cm3;28℃下生长旺盛,能利用葡萄糖产酸但不产气,可以利用麦芽糖、蔗糖等糖类.测定了HY菌约930bp的16S rDNA序列,分类进化树显示其与哈维氏弧菌(Vibrio harveyi)XC08001聚为一簇.综合形态、生化和16S rDNA序列分析结果确定HY菌为哈维氏弧菌.以2×106cfu/只(蟹)的HY菌悬液注射健康梭子蟹成蟹(平均体重为400±25 g/只),致死率为35%;菌液浸泡感染梭子蟹仔蟹的半数致死剂量(LC50)为8.25×105cfu/cm3.上述结果表明分离的哈维氏弧菌对三疣梭子蟹具有致病性.周永强 李登峰 彭姣 Ester Johanna Shikongo 陈炯 刘联国 顾晓英 2013应用海洋学学报2013,32,2:7

6The HEPD particle detector of the CSES satellite mission for investigating seismo-associated perturbations of the Van Allen belts显示文摘CSES(China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite) is a mission developed by CNSA(Chinese National Space Administration) and ASI(Italian Space Agency), to investigate the near-Earth electromagnetic, plasma and particle environment, for studying the seismo-associated disturbances in the ionosphere-magnetosphere transition zone. The anthropogenic and electromagnetic noise,as well as the natural non-seismic electromagnetic emissions is mainly due to tropospheric activity. In particular, the mission aims to confirming the existence of possible temporal correlations between the occurrence of earthquakes for medium and strong magnitude and the observation in space of electromagnetic perturbations, plasma variations and precipitation of bursts with highenergy charged particles from the inner Van Allen belt. In this framework, the high energy particle detector(HEPD) of the CSES mission has been developed by the Italian LIMADOU Collaboration. HEPD is an advanced detector based on a tower of scintillators and a silicon tracker that provides good energy and angular resolution and a wide angular acceptance, for electrons of 3–100 Me V, protons of 30–200 Me V and light nuclei up to the oxygen. 7Update on the treatment of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis in renal transplantation显示文摘Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis(FSGS) represents one of the most severe glomerular diseases, with frequent progression to end-stage renal disease and a high rate of recurrence in renal allografts(30%-50%). Recurrent FSGS portends a negative outcome, with the hazard ratio of graft failure being two-fold higher then that of other glomerulonephritis. Two patterns of clinical presentations are observed: Early recurrence, which is characterized by massive proteinuria within hours to days after implantation of the renal graft, and late recurrence, which occurs several months or years after the transplantation. Many clinical conditions have been recognized as risk factors for recurrence, including younger age, rapid progression of the disease to end-stage renal disease on native kidneys, and loss of previous renal allografts due to recurrence. However, much less is known about the incidence and risk factors of the so-called 'de novo ' type of FSGS, for which sufferers are transplanted patients without disease on native kidneys; but, rapid development of allograft failure is frequently observed. Management of both forms is challenging, and none of the approaches proposed to date have been demonstrated as consistently beneficial or effective. 8Ternary Ni-Co-Fe oxyhydroxide oxygen evolution catalysts:Intrinsic activity trends,electrical conductivity,and electronic band structure显示文摘Nickel-,cobalt-,and iron-based(oxy)hydroxides comprise the most-commonly studied electrocatalysts for the oxygen-evolution reaction(OER)in alkaline solution.A fundamental understanding of composition-structure-activity relationships for mixed-metal Ni-Co and Ni-Co-Fe(oxy)hydroxides is important to guide the design of advanced OER catalysts.Here we use cyclic voltammetry,chronopotentiometry,inductively-coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy,and in situ electrical conductivity measurements to characterize the properties and activity of various compositions of Ni-Co-Fe(oxy)hydroxides prepared by cathodic co-electrodeposition.Consistent with previous studies,we find Fe is essential for the mixed-metal(oxy)hydroxides to achieve high OER activity.In the rigorous absence of Fe(achieved by using specially cleaned electrolytes),the most-active Ni-Co(oxy)hydroxide composition has an OER turn-over frequency only twice that ofpure Co(oxy)hydroxide,suggesting minimal synergism between the two metals.The addition of Co to Ni-Fe(oxy)hydroxides shifts the onset of electrical conductivity to lower potentials,but has little effect on the intrinsic OER activity,with the most-active Ni-Co-Fe(oxy)hydroxide having an OER turn-over frequency only -1.5 times that of the Ni-Fe(oxy)hydroxides.The magnitudes of the electrical conductivities are similar for all the compositions measured.Density-functional-theory-calculated projected density of states show a significant contribution of all chemical elements at the valence band edge of the mixed-metal oxyhydroxide electronic structure,demonstrating significant electronic hybridization between the elements.The calculations suggest the involvement of all the elements in modulating the electronic structure at putative Fe-based active sites that are probably located at edges or defects in the two-dimensional oxyhydroxide sheets.Michaela Burke Stevens Lisa J. 10Water gas shift activity of Co-Mo/MgO-Al_2O_3 catalysts presulfided with ammonium sulfide显示文摘Co-Mo/MgO-Al2O3 catalyst was presulfided with ammonium sulfide in aqueous solution and activated with synthesis gas for water gas shift reaction. The assay results indicate that the presulfided Co-Mo/MgO-Al2O3 catalyst exhibits an excellent catalytic activity and stability. XRD and EPR characterization results show that the O-S exchange might occur during the impregnation, leading to the formation of (NH4)2MoS4 (or (NH4)2MoxSy) precursor, which was then thermally decomposed and reduced to MoS2. 11Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth in inactive Crohn's disease:Influence of thiopurine and biological treatment显示文摘AIM:To investigate the influence of thiopurines and biological drugs on the presence of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth(SIBO) in patients with inactive Crohn's disease(CD).METHODS:This was a prospective study in patients with CD in remission and without corticosteroid treatment,included consecutively from 2004 to 2010.SIBO was investigated using the hydrogen glucose breath test.RESULTS:One hundred and seven patients with CD in remission were included.Almost 58%of patients used maintenance immunosuppressant therapy and 19.6%used biological therapy.The prevalence of SIBO was16.8%.No association was observed between SIBO and the use of thiopurine Immunosuppressant(12/62patients),administration of biological drugs(2/21 patients),or with double treatment with an anti-tumor necrosis factor drugs plus thiopurine(1/13 patients).Half of the patients had symptoms that were suggestive of SIBO,though meteorism was the only symptom that was significantly associated with the presence of SIBO on univariate analysis(P<0.05).Multivariate analysis revealed that the presence of meteorism and a fistulizing pattern were associated with the presence of SIBO(P<0.05).CONCLUSION:Immunosuppressants and/or biological drugs do not induce SIBO in inactive CD.Fistulizing disease pattern and meteorism are associated with SIBO.Cristina Sánchez-Montes Vicente Ortiz Guillermo Bastida Ester Rodríguez María Yago Belén Beltrán Mariam Aguas Marisa Iborra Vicente Garrigues Julio Ponce Pilar Nos 2014World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,38:4
