1Abdominal tuberculosis of the gastrointestinal tract: Revisited显示文摘Abdominal tuberculosis is an increasingly common disease that poses diagnostic challenge,as the nonspecific features of the disease which may lead to diagnostic delays and development of complications.This condition is regarded as a great mimicker of other abdominal pathology.A high index of suspicion is an important factor in early diagnosis.Abdominal involvement mayoccur in the gastrointestinal tract,peritoneum,lymphnodes or solid viscera.Various investigative methods have been used to aid in the diagnosis of abdominal tuberculosis.Early diagnosis and initiation of antituberculous therapy and surgical treatment are essential to prevent morbidity and mortality.Most of the patients respond very well to standard antitubercular therapy and surgery is required only in a minority of cases.Imaging plays an important role in diagnosis of abdominal tuberculosis because early recognition of this condition is important.We reviewed our experience with the findings on various imaging modalities for diagnosis of this potentially treatable disease.Uma Debi Vasudevan Ravisankar Kaushal Kishor Prasad Saroj Kant Sinha Arun Kumar Sharma 2014World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,40:14
2Antifungal Effect of Plant Extract and Essential Oil显示文摘The advancement of phytochemical and phytopharmacological sciences has enabled elucidation of the composition and biological activities of several medicinal plant products including plant extract and essential oils. These products have been widely used around the world since ancient times for the treatment of various disorders such as diabetes, hypertension, peptic ulcer disease, microbial infection, sexual disorder and many more. Its popularity in the modern system of medicine is mainly due to their availability and fewer adverse reactions compared to synthetic drugs. Various scientific investigations have been conducted to look for the potential of the extract from the plant or isolated compounds for the continued use of these products in the treatment and prevention of various kinds of human diseases. It is evident from the available literature and scientific investigations that many plant species possess potential for use as a beneficial therapeutic remedy with multiple pharmacological actions such as analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, hypoglycemic, hypotensive, antimicrobial, antiulcer and anticonvulsant activities. The present review aims to provide relevant updated information about certain plant products, its composition, preparation and its fungicidal or fungistatic effects on different species of fungus as evaluated by studies done in the past. It introduces six medicinal plants that have been studied for their antifungal property and are found to be effective. 3Tree species diversity and stand structure along major community types in lowland primary and secondary moist deciduous forests in Tripura,Northeast India显示文摘Tree species diversity and population structure at different community types were described and analyzed for primary and secondary lowland moist deciduous forests in Tripura.Overall 10,957 individual trees belonging to 46 family,103 genera and 144 species were counted at ≥30 cm DBH(diameter at breast height) using 28 permanent belt transects with a size of 1 ha(10 m × 1000 m).Four different tree communities were identified.The primary forests was dominated by Shorea robusta(mean density 464.77 trees ha-1,105 species) and Schima wallichii(336.25 trees ha-1,82 species),while the secondary forests was dominated by Tectona grandis(333.88 trees ha-1,105 species) and Hevea brasiliensis(299.67 trees ha-1,82 species).Overall mean basal area in this study was 18.01m 2 ·ha-1 ;the maximum value was recorded in primary Shorea forest(26.21 m 2 ·ha-1).Mean density and diversity indices were differed significantly within four different communities.No significant differences were observed in number of species,genera,family and tree basal cover area.Significant relationships were found between the species richness and different tree population groups across the communities.Results revealed that species diversity and density were increased in those forests due to past disturbances which resulted in slow accumulation of native oligarchic small tree species.Seventeen species were recorded with <2 individuals of which Saraca asoka(Roxb.) de Wilde and Entada phaseoloides(L.) Merr.etc.extensively used in local ethno-medicinal formulations.The present S.robusta Gaertn dominated forest was recorded richer(105 species) than other reported studies.Moraceae was found more speciose family instead of Papilionaceae and Euphorbiaceae than other Indian moist deciduous forests.Seasonal phenological gap in such moist deciduous forests influenced the population of Trachypithecus pileatus and capped langur.The analysis of FIV suggested a slow trend of shifting the population of Lamiaceae group by Moraceae species in secondary T.grandis L.dominated community.Koushik Majumdar Uma Shankar Badal Kumar Datta 2012Journal of Forestry Research2012,23,4:4
4Potential applications of lactic acid bacteria and bacteriocins in antimycobacterial therapy显示文摘Tuberculosis(TB) is a communicable disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis(M. tuberculosis). WHO estimated that 10.4 million new(incident) TB cases worldwide in year 2016. The increased prevalence of drug resistant strains and side effects associated with the current anti-tubercular drugs make the treatment options more complicated. Hence, there are necessities to identify new drug candidates to fight against various sub-populations of M. tuberculosis with less or no toxicity/side effects and shorter treatment duration. Bacteriocins produced by lactic acid bacteria(LAB) attract attention of researchers because of its 'Generally recognized as safe' status. LAB and its bacteriocins possess an effective antimicrobial activity against various bacteria and fungi. Interestingly bacteriocins such as nisin and lacticin 3147 have shown antimycobacterial activity in vitro. As probiotics, LAB plays a vital role in promoting various health benefits including ability to modulate immune response against various infectious diseases. LAB and its metabolic products activate immune system and thereby limiting the M. tuberculosis pathogenesis. The protein and peptide engineering techniques paved the ways to obtain hybrid bacteriocin derivatives from the known peptide sequence of existing bacteriocin. In this review, we focus on the antimycobacterial property and immunomodulatory role of LAB and its metabolic products. 5Rainforests north of the Tropic of Cancer: Physiognomy, floristics and diversity in ‘lowland rainforests’ of Meghalaya, India显示文摘The lowland rainforests of Meghalaya, India represent the westernmost limit of the rainforests north of the Tropic of Cancer. These forests, on the Shillong plateau, are akin to Whitmore's ‘tropical lowland evergreen rainforest' formation and exhibit striking similarities and conspicuous differences with the equatorial rainforests in Asia-Pacific as well as tropical seasonal rainforests in southwestern China near the Tropic of Cancer. We found these common attributes of the rainforests in Meghalaya: familial composition with predominance of Euphorbiaceae, Lauraceae, Meliaceae, Moraceae, Myrsiticaceae,Myrtaceae and Rubiaceae; deciduousness in evergreen physiognomy; dominance of mega-and mesophanerophytic life-forms; abundance of species with low frequency of occurrence(rare and aggregated species); low proportional abundance of the abundant species; and truncated lognormal abundance distribution. The levels of stand density and stand basal area were comparable with seasonal rainforests in southwestern China, but were lower than equatorial rainforests. Tropical Asian species predominated flora, commanding 95% of the abundance. The differences include overall low stature(height) of the forest, inconspicuous stratification in canopy, fewer species and individuals of liana, thicker understory,higher proportion of rare species, absence of locally endemic species and relatively greater dominance of Fagaceae and Theaceae. The richness of species per hectare(S) was considerably lower at higher latitudes in Meghalaya than in equatorial rainforests, but was comparable with seasonal rainforests. Shannon's diversity index(H’=4.40 nats for ≥10 cm gbh and 4.25 nats for ≥30 cm gbh) was lower on higher latitudes in Meghalaya in comparison to species-rich equatorial rainforests, but it was the highest among all lowland rainforests near the Tropic of Cancer.Uma Shankar Amit Kumar Tripathi 2017Plant Diversity2017,39,1:2

7Association of endothelial nitric oxide synthase gene T-786C promoter polymorphism with gastric cancer显示文摘AIM: To investigate the role of endothelial nitric oxide synthase-786 T > C promoter polymorphism in the etiology of gastric cancer(GC). METHODS: A total of 150 GC patients and 150 control subjects were included in the study. The information on demographic features was elicited with an informed consent from all the patients and control subjects using a structured questionnaire. Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) infectivity status was tested in antral biopsies from all the subjects by rapid urease test following the method of Vaira et al. Genomic DNA was isolated from whole blood samples following the salting out method of Lahiri et al. Genotype analysis of the rs2070744 polymorphism was carried out by allele-specific polymerase chain reaction method. The genotypes were determined based on the appearance of bands on an agarose gel stained with ethidium bromide under ultraviolet gel documentation with the help of 100 bp ladder. Odds ratios and corresponding 95%CIs were determined using java stat online software. RESULTS: There was a significant difference in the distribution of C allele(C vs T; P = 0.000, OR = 5.038) in patient group compared to the control subjects exhibiting a fivefold increased risk for GC. When the T/T and C/C genotypes were compared, there was an enhanced GC risk for individuals with C/C genotype(T/T vs C/C; P = 0.000). Among the demographic factors, smoking and alcoholism were the common risk factors in patients compared to the control subjects(P < 0.05). Patients with smoking and alcoholism developed cancer even in heterozygous T/C condition(smoking: P = 0.020 and alcoholism: P = 0.005). Individuals with H. pylori infection showed seven fold increased risk for cancer. All the patients with C/C genotype revealed a significant association between H. pylori infection and GC. Among the patients 2.4% of them revealed familial incidence of GC. 8Progress in bioactive surface coatings on biodegradable Mg alloys:A critical review towards clinical translation显示文摘Mg and its alloys evince strong candidature for biodegradable bone implants,cardiovascular stents,and wound closing devices.However,their rapid degradation rate causes premature implant failure,constraining clinical applications.Bio-functional surface coatings have emerged as the most competent strategy to fulfill the diverse clinical requirements,besides yielding effective corrosion resistance.This article reviews the progress of biodegradable and advanced surface coatings on Mg alloys investigated in recent years,aiming to build up a comprehensive knowledge framework of coating techniques,processing parameters,performance measures in terms of corrosion resistance,adhesion strength,and biocompatibility.Recently developed conversion and deposition type surface coatings are thoroughly discussed by reporting their essential therapeutic responses like osteogenesis,angiogenesis,cytocompatibility,hemocompatibility,anti-bacterial,and controlled drug release towards in-vitro and in-vivo study models.The challenges associated with metallic,ceramic and polymeric coatings along with merits and demerits of various coatings have been illustrated.The use of multilayered hybrid coating comprising a unique combination of organic and inorganic components has been emphasized with future perspectives to obtain diverse bio-functionalities in a facile single coating system for orthopedic implant applications.Navdeep Singh Uma Batra Kamal Kumar Neeraj Ahuja Anil Mahapatro 2023Bioactive Materials2023,,1:2

13Effects of gadolinium addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg–9Al alloy显示文摘This research aims to study the significance of Gd addition(0wt%–2wt%) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg–9Al alloy. The effect of Gd addition on the microstructure was investigated via X-ray diffraction(XRD), optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy(SEM), and transmission electron microscopy(TEM). The Mg–9Al alloy contained two phases, α-Mg and β-Mg_(17)Al_(12). Alloying with Gd led to the emergence of a new rectangular-shaped phase, Al_2Gd. The grain size also decreased marginally upon Gd addition. The ultimate tensile strength and microhardness of Mg–9Al alloy increased by 23% and 19%, respectively, upon 1.5wt% Gd addition. We observed that, although Mg–9Al–2.0Gd alloy exhibited the smallest grain size(181 μm) and the highest dislocation density(5.1 × 10^(10) m^(-2)) among the investigated compositions, the Mg–9Al–1.5Gd alloy displayed the best mechanical properties. 17Apatite formation and weight loss study in EDMed perforated AZ31 Mg-alloy显示文摘Porous structures are highly preferred for bone regeneration and high tissue in-growth.In present work,electrical discharge drilling(EDD),a thermal erosion process was used to produce through holes in Mg-alloys to fabricate perforated structure similar to open cell porous structure in extruded AZ31.Apatite formation and weight loss study was conducted for 7 days,14 days and 21 days after immersion tests in SBF solution.The perforated structure in AZ31 with 26 through micro-holes provides 72%increase in surface area but with marginally 4%higher weight loss as compare to non-perforated structure.Comparing perforated and non-perforated samples of Mg-alloy,it was well observed that perforated structure forms high volume of apatite as compared to non-perforated structure.Scanning electron microscopic(SEM)study revealed that in perforated structure,drilled holes retain their circularity after 21 days of immersion test and distinct corrosion phenomenon occur at localized sites.Randeep Singh Gill Kamal Kumar Uma Batra 2017Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2017,5,3:1
