| 2 | Overview of the Shenzhen Emergency Medical Service Call Pattern显示文摘BACKGROUND:In Shenzhen,the Emergency Medical Service(EMS) system has been in service since 1997.This study aims to examine the operation of Shenzhen 120 EMS center and to identify the reasons of calling EMS.METHODS:In this retrospective quantitative descriptive study,the data from the Shenzhen 120 EMS registry in 2011 were analyzed.RESULTS:Shenzhen 120 EMS center is a communication command center.When the number of 120 are dialed,it is forwarded to the closest appropriate hospital for ambulance dispatch.In2011,the Shenzhen 120 EMS center received 153 160 ambulance calls,with an average of 420 calls per day.Calling emergency services was mainly due to traffic accidents.Trauma and other acute diseases constituted a majority of ambulance transports.The adult patients aged 15-60 years are the principal users of EMS.There are no recognized 'paramedic' doctors and nurses.The pre-hospital emergency service is under the operation of emergency departments of hospitals.Shenzhen at present does not have specialized pre-hospital training for doctors and nurses in posttrauma management.Moreover,specialized pre-hospital training,financial support,and public health education on proper use of EMS should be emphasized.CONCLUSION:The Shenzhen 120 EMS center has its own epidemiology characteristics.Traumatic injury and traffic accident are the main reasons for calling ambulance service.In-depth study emphasizing the distribution and characteristics of trauma patients is crucial to the future development of EMS. | Shuk Man Lo Yi Min Yu Lap Yip Larry Lee Mi Ling Eliza Wong Sek Ying Chair Edward J Kalinowski Tak Shing Jimmy Chan | 2012 | World Journal of Emergency Medicine2012,3,4: | 4 |
| 3 | Identification of Ca2+ signaling components in neural stem/progenitor cells during differentiation into neurons and glia in intact and dissociated zebrafish neurospheres显示文摘The development of the CNS in vertebrate embryos involves the generation of different sub-types of neurons and glia in a complex but highly-ordered spatio-temporal manner. Zebrafish are commonly used for exploring the development, plasticity and regeneration of the CNS, and the recent development of reliable protocols for isolating and culturing neural stem/progenitor cells(NSCs/NPCs) from the brain of adult fish now enables the exploration of mechanisms underlying the induction/specification/differentiation of these cells. Here, we refined a protocol to generate proliferating and differentiating neurospheres from the entire brain of adult zebrafish. We demonstrated via RT-qPCR that some isoforms of ip3 r, ryr and stim are upregulated/downregulated significantly in differentiating neurospheres, and via immunolabelling that 1,4,5-inositol trisphosphate receptor(IP3 R) type-1 and ryanodine receptor(RyR) type-2 are differentially expressed in cells with neuron-or radial glial-like properties. Furthermore, ATP but not caffeine(IP3 R and RyR agonists, respectively), induced the generation of Ca^(2+) transients in cells exhibiting neuron-or glial-like morphology. These results indicate the differential expression of components of the Ca^(2+) -signaling toolkit in proliferating and differentiating cells. | 4 | Surgical outcomes for unilateral superior oblique palsy in Chinese population: a retrospective study显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the outcome after surgery for unilateral superior oblique(SO) palsy in Chinese.METHODS: The medical records of 39 patients that underwent surgery for unilateral SO palsy between January 2003 and December 2012 at Caritas Medical Centre, Hong Kong, were retrospectively reviewed. All surgeries were performed by a single surgeon. Pre-operative assessments for vertical deviation, cyclo-deviation, and Knapp's classification were obtained to determine the nature and degree of surgical correction.Vertical deviation was measured at 1wk; 1, 6mo and on last follow-up day post-operatively. Cyclo-deviation was measured on last follow-up day post-operatively.RESULTS: During the 10 y period, 39 subjects were recruited. The most common etiology was congenital(94.9%). Knapp's Type III(66.7%) and Type I(12.8%)classifications were the most common subtypes. To treat SO palsy, the most common surgical procedures were:isolated inferior oblique(IO) anteriorization(41.0%),isolated IO myectomy(10.3%), and isolated IO recession(10.3%). At 3.5 ±2.1y post-operatively, the vertical deviation was significantly reduced(15.1 ±6.2 PD versus0.5±1.4 PD, P <0.0001) without significant improvement in cyclo-deviation(P =0.5). Initial vertical deviation was correlated with cyclo-torsion(r =0.4, P =0.007). Those with over-correction had greater initial vertical deviation(19.4±7.2 PD versus 13.2±4.3 PD, P =0.003).
