1Response of microbial communities to biochar-amended soils:a critical review显示文摘Application of biochar to soils changes soil physicochemical properties and stimulates the activities of soil microorganisms that influence soil quality and plant performance.Studying the response of soil microbial communities to biochar amendments is important for better understanding interactions of biochar with soil,as well as plants.However,the effect of biochar on soil microorganisms has received less attention than its influences on soil physicochemical properties.In this review,the following key questions are discussed:(i)how does biochar affect soil microbial activities,in particular soil carbon(C)mineralization,nutrient cycling,and enzyme activities?(ii)how do microorganisms respond to biochar amendment in contaminated soils?and(iii)what is the role of biochar as a growth promoter for soil microorganisms?Many studies have demonstrated that biochar-soil application enhances the soil microbial biomass with substantial changes in microbial community composition.Biochar amendment changes microbial habitats,directly or indirectly affects microbial metabolic activities,and modifies the soil microbial community in terms of their diversity and abundance.However,chemical properties of biochar,(especially pH and nutrient content),and physical properties such as pore size,pore volume,and specific surface area play significant roles in determining the efficacy of biochar on microbial performance as biochar provides suitable habitats for microorgan-isms.The mode of action of biochar leading to stimulation of microbial activities is complex and is influenced by the nature of biochar as well as soil conditions.Kumuduni Niroshika Palansooriya James Tsz Fung Wong Yohey Hashimoto Longbin Huang Jörg Rinklebe Scott X.Chang Nanthi Bolan Hailong Wang Yong Sik Ok 2019Biochar2019,1,1:34
2WJSC 6^(th) Anniversary Special Issues(2):Mesenchymal stem cells Progress of mesenchymal stem cell therapy for neural and retinal diseases显示文摘Complex circuitry and limited regenerative power make central nervous system(CNS)disorders the most challenging and difficult for functional repair.With elusive disease mechanisms,traditional surgical and medical interventions merely slow down the progression of the neurodegenerative diseases.However,the number of neurons still diminishes in many patients.Recently,stem cell therapy has been proposed as a viable option.Mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs),a widely-studied human adult stem cell population,have been discovered for more than 20 years.MSCs have been found all over the body and can be conveniently obtained from different accessible tissues:bone marrow,blood,and adipose and dental tissue.MSCs have high proliferative and differentiation abilities,providing an inexhaustible source of neurons and glia for cell replacement therapy.Moreover,MSCs also show neuroprotective effects without any genetic modification or reprogramming.In addition,the extraordinary immunomodulatory properties of MSCs enable autologous and heterologous transplantation.These qualities heighten the clinical applicability of MSCs when dealing with the pathologies of CNS disorders.Here,we summarize the latest progress of MSC experimental research as well as human clinical trials for neural and retinal diseases.This review article will focus on multiple sclerosis,spinal cord injury,autism,glaucoma,retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration.Tsz Kin Ng Veronica R Fortino Daniel Pelaez Herman S Cheung 2014World Journal of Stem Cells2014,6,2:13
3Review of evolution of clinical, training and educational services and research program for autism spectrum disorders in Hong Kong显示文摘The evolution of a local fragmented model of services for children with autism in Hong Kong emerged gradually over the past three decades with lack of government funding or support. This had been due to increasing number of children with autism being detected and referred for earlier assessment. With increasing pressure from parents due to long waiting time for assessment and training services and the increasing polarization by mass media there had been a gradual increasing public awareness over the past five years. Though still highly fragmented in the availability of services, there is a growing 'business model' available in the community due to increasing need and lack of public funding for support. There is a lack of strategic planning for medical diagnostic and management issues in Hong Kong. Our University of Hong Kong based Autism Research Program was pioneered in 1985 based on the increasing load of autism cases referred for assessment for other developmental problems and diagnosed as Autism in the Duchess of Kent Children's Hospital. As the first author has been the staff of the University of Hong Kong, this program flourished as a research based program. The benefits of early identification and intervention of autism spectrum disorder(ASD) had been increasingly recognized, and with the increased public awareness and increasing trend of earlier diagnosis, there has been a continuously high demand from parents for earlier assessment and training for children suspected to have ASD. This model had not received extra funding for this integrated program for research, teaching and training in autism. We had to apply for various donations and grants to support the development of this pioneer program. The research output and organization of forums for public education and awareness are reviewed. The latter part of the paper reports the summary of clinical profile of autism cases(N=1441) assessed from 1985 to 2010 June under the University of Hong Kong. 6Apoptotic extracellular vesicles are metabolized regulators nurturing the skin and hair显示文摘Over 300 billion of cells die every day in the human body,producing a large number of endogenous apoptotic extracellular vesicles(apoEVs).Also,allogenic stem cell transplantation,a commonly used therapeutic approach in current clinical practice,generates exogenous apoEVs.It is well known that phagocytic cells engulf and digest apoEVs to maintain the body’s homeostasis.In this study,we show that a fraction of exogenous apoEVs is metabolized in the integumentary skin and hair follicles.Mechanistically,apoEVs activate the Wnt/β-catenin pathway to facilitate their metabolism in a wave-like pattern.The migration of apoEVs is enhanced by treadmill exercise and inhibited by tail suspension,which is associated with the mechanical force-regulated expression of DKK1 in circulation.Furthermore,we show that exogenous apoEVs promote wound healing and hair growth via activation of Wnt/β-catenin pathway in skin and hair follicle mesenchymal stem cells.This study reveals a previously unrecognized metabolic pathway of apoEVs and opens a new avenue for exploring apoEV-based therapy for skin and hair disorders.Lan Ma Chider Chen Dawei Liu Zhiqing Huang Jiaqi Li Haixiang Liu Ryan Tsz Kin Kwok Benzhong Tang Bingdong Sui Xiao Zhang Jianxia Tang Xueli Mao Weiying Huang Songtao Shi Xiaoxing Kou 2023Bioactive Materials2023,,1:3
7Single atom and defect engineering of CuO for efficient electrochemical reduction of CO_(2) to C_(2)H_(4)显示文摘Electrochemical CO_(2) transformation to high‐value ethylene(C_(2)H_(4))at high currents and efficiencies is desired and yet remains a grand challenge.We show for the first time that coupling single Sb atoms and oxygen vacancies of CuO enable synergistic electrocatalytic reduction of CO_(2) to C_(2)H_(4) at low overpotentials.Highly dispersed Sb atoms occupying metal substitutional sites of CuO are synthesized under mild conditions.The overall CO_(2) reduction faradaic efficiency(FE)reaches 89.3±1.1%with an FE toward C_(2)H_(4) exceeding 58.4%at a high‐current density of 500 mA/cm^(2).Addition of the p‐block metal is found to induce transformation of CuO from flakes to nanoribbons rich in nanoholes and oxygen vacancies,greatly enhancing CO_(2) adsorption and activation while suppressing hydrogen evolution.Further density functional theory calculations with in situ X‐ray diffraction reveal that combining Sb sites and oxygen vacancies prominently lessen the dimerization energy of adsorbed CO intermediate,thus boosting the conversion of CO_(2) to produce C_(2)H_(4).This study provides a new perspective for promoting selective C-C coupling for electrochemical CO_(2) reduction.Senlin Chu Changwoo Kang Woonghyeon Park Yu Han Song Hong Leiduan Hao Hao Zhang Tsz Woon Benedict Lo Alex W.Robertson Yousung Jung Buxing Han Zhenyu Sun 2022SmartMat2022,3,1:3

17Molecular Advances in Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-associated Coronavirus (SARS-CoV)显示文摘The sudden outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in 2002 prompted the establishment of a global scientific network subsuming most of the traditional rivalries in the competitive field of virology. Within months of the SARS outbreak, collaborative work revealed the identity of the disastrous pathogen as SARS-associated coronavirus (SARS-CoV). However, although the rapid identification of the agent represented an important breakthrough, our understanding of the deadly virus remains limited. Detailed biological knowledge is crucial for the development of effective countermeasures, diagnostic tests, vaccines and antiviral drugs against the SARS-CoV. 19A facile design for multifunctional AIEgen based on tetraaniline derivatives显示文摘Aniline oligomers have been widely used in many fields due to their excellent physicochemical properties. Owing to strong intermolecular interactions, their emission is always weakened or quenched when they are in high concentration or aggregated state, which greatly limits their fluorescent applications. Inspired by the concept of aggregation-induced emission(AIE), herein we introduced large steric groups onto the aniline oligomer to prevent the formation of packing structure. In particular, diphenyl vinyl group was bonded with oligomeric tetraaniline by a facile synthetic procedure with high yield. The obtained aniline oligomer derivative exhibited typical AIE features, which was also confirmed by density functional theoretical calculation. More importantly, this AIE oligomer was able to detect Fe^(3+) ions selectively and quantitatively. The fluorescence intensity decreased linearly along with the increment of Fe^(3+) concentration. Moreover, we demonstrated that this AIE oligomer could stain live bacteria, such as E. coli and S. aureus efficiently.
