| 1 | Esophageal cancer: A Review of epidemiology, pathogenesis, staging workup and treatment modalities显示文摘Esophageal cancer is a serious malignancy with regards to mortality and prognosis. It is a growing health concern that is expected to increase in incidence over the next 10 years. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common histological type of esophageal cancer worldwide, with a higher incidence in developing nations. With the increased prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux disease and obesity in developed nations, the incidence of esophageal adenocarcinoma has dramatically increased in the past 40 years. Esophageal cancer is staged according to the widely accepted TNM system. Staging plays an integral part in guiding stage specific treatment protocols and has a great impact on overall survival. Common imaging modalities used in staging include computed tomography, endoscopic ultrasound and positron emission tomography scans. Current treatment options include multimodality therapy mainstaysof current treatment include surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. | 2 | Potential antibacterial activity of berberine against multi drug resistant enterovirulent Escherichia coli isolated from yaks(Poephagus grunniens) with haemorrhagic diarrhoea显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy of berberine,a plant alkaloid.Methods:Five multi-drug resistant(MDR) STEC/EPEC and five MDR ETEC isolates from yaks with haemorrhagic diarrhoea were selected for the study.Antibacterial activity of berberine was evaluated by broth dilution and disc diffusion methods.The binding kinetics of berberine to DNA and protein was also enumerated.Results:For both categories of enterovirulent Escherichia coli(E.roli) isolates, berberine displayed the antibaclerial effect in a dose dependent manner.The MIC50 of berberine chloride for STEC/EPEC isolates varied from 2.07μM to 3.6μM with a mean of(2.95±0.33)μM where as for ETEC strains it varied from 1.75 to 1.96μM with a mean of(1.87±0.03)μM. | 3 | Value of screening endoscopy in evaluation of esophageal,gastric and colon cancers显示文摘Esophageal,gastric,and colorectal cancers are deadly diseases that continue to plague our world today.The value of screening endoscopy in evaluating these types of cancers is a critical area of discussion due to a potential reduction in morbidity and mortality.This article describes how to identify a good screening test and explains what are important criteria in the field of screening endoscopy.Furthermore,the current status and progress of screening endoscopy for esophageal,gastric,and colorectal cancer will be evaluated and discussed.Mass screening programs have not been implemented for esophageal and gastric carcinomas in those with average or low risk populations.However,studies of high-risk populations have found value and a cost-benefit in conducting screening endoscopy.Colorectal cancer,on the other hand,has had mass screening programs in place for many years due to the clear evidence of improved outcomes.As the role of endoscopy as a screening tool has continued to develop,newer technology and techniques have emerged to improve its utility.Many new image enhancement techniques and computer processing programs have shown promise and may have a significant role in the future of endoscopic screening.These developments are paving the way for improving the diagnostic and therapeutic capability of endoscopy in the field of gastroenterology. | Tae H Ro Michelle A Mathew Subhasis Misra | 2015 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2015,21,33: | 9 |
| 4 | Microstructure and surface texture driven improvement in in-vitro response of laser surface processed AZ31B magnesium alloy显示文摘The present work explored effects of laser surface melting on microstructure and surface topography evolution in AZ31B magnesium alloy.Thermokinetic effects experienced by the material during laser surface melting were simulated using a multiphysics finite element model.Microstructure and phase evolution were examined using scanning electron microscopy,X-ray diffraction,and electron back scatter diffraction.Surface topography was evaluated using white light interferometry.The interaction of surface melted samples with simulated body fluid was monitored by contact angle measurements and immersion studies up to 7 days.Laser surface melting led to formation of a refined microstructure with predominantly basal crystallographic texture.Concurrently,the amount ofβphase(Mg_(17)Al_(12))increased with an increase in the laser fluence.βphase preferentially decorated the cell boundaries.In terms of topography,the surface became progressively rougher with an increase in laser fluence.As a result,upon immersion in simulated body fluid,the laser surface melted samples showed an improved wettability,corrosion resistance,and precipitation of mineral having composition closer to the hydroxyapatite bone mineral compared to the untreated sample. | Tso-Chang Wu Sameehan SJoshi Yee-Hsien Ho Mangesh VPantawane Subhasis Sinha Narendra B.Dahotre | 2021 | Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2021,9,4: | 4 |

| 8 | Predictors of mortality among HIV-infected patients initiating anti retroviral therapy at a tertiary care hospital in Eastern India显示文摘Objective:To assess early mortality and identify its predictors among the ART naive HIV-infected patients initiating anti retroviral therapy(ART) available free of cost at the ART Centres. Methods:A retrospective cohort analysis of routinely collected programme data was done for assessing mortality of all ART naive adult patients who received first-line ART at a government tertiary care hospital in eastern India during 1st March 2009 and 28th February 2010.Bivariate and multiple regression analyses of the baseline demographic,clinical and laboratory records using SPSS 15.0 were done to identify independent predictors of mortality.Results:The mortality rate at one year was estimated to be 7.66(95%CI 5.84-9.83) deaths/100 patient-years and more than 50%of the deaths occurred during first three months of ART initiation with a median time interval of 73 days.Tuberculosis was the major cause of death.ART naive patients with baseline serum albumin <3.5 mg/dL were eight(OR 7.9;95%CI:3.8-16.5) at risk of death than those with higher serum albumin levels and patients with CD4 count <I00 cells/μL were two times(OR 2.2; 95%CI:1.1-4.4) at risk of death compared to higher CD4 counts.Conclusions:Risk of mortality is increased when ART is initiated at advanced stages of immunosuppression denoted by low serum albumin levels and CD4 cell counts.This highlights the importance of early detection of HIV infection,early management of opportunistic infections including tuberculosis and timely initiation of the antiretroviral drugs in the resource-limited countries,now available free in the Indian national ART programme. | Ananya Bhowmik Subhasis Bhandari Rajyasree De Subhasish Kamal Guha | 2012 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2012,5,12: | 3 |
| 9 | Liver abscess caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei in a young man: A case report and review of literature显示文摘Pyogenic liver abscess is a common entity in Indian subcontinent and is mostly caused by gram negative bacteria. Melioidosis is not commonly seen in India and only a few cases are reported. It can give rise to multiple abscesses at different sites including liver. We report a case of isolated liver abscess caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei(B. pseudomallei) in a 29-yearold recently diagnosed diabetic, immunocompetent male. Diagnosis was made by imaging and culture of pus aspirated from the abscess and he was treated with percutaneous pigtail catheter drainage followed by antibiotics(meropenem and trimethoprim-sulphmethoxazole). Melioidosis is an emerging infection in India and has high mortality rate, so early diagnosis and promptmanagement is warranted which requires clinical vigilance and an intensive microbiological workup.
