| 2 | Model for end-stage liver disease score versus Child score in predicting the outcome of surgical procedures in patients with cirrhosis显示文摘AIM:To determine factors affecting the outcome of patients with cirrhosis undergoing surgery and to compare the capacities of the Child-Turcotte-Pugh(CTP) and model for end-stage liver disease(MELD)score to predict that outcome. METHODS:We reviewed the charts of 195 patients with cirrhosis who underwent surgery at two teaching hospitals over a five-year period.The combined endpoint of death or hepatic decompensation was considered to be the primary endpoint. RESULTS:Patients who reached the endpoint had a higher MELD score,a higher CTP score and were more likely to have undergone an urgent procedure.Among patients undergoing elective surgical procedures,no statistically significant difference was noted in the mean MELD(12.8±3.9 vs 12.6±4.7,P=0.9)or in the mean CTP(7.6±1.2 vs 7.7±1.7,P=0.8)between patients who reached the endpoint and those who did not.Both mean scores were higher in the patients reaching the endpoint in the case of urgent procedures(MELD:22.4± 8.7 vs 15.2±6.4,P=0.0007;CTP:9.9±1.8 vs 8.5±1.8, P=0.008).The performances of the MELD and CTP scores in predicting the outcome of urgent surgery were only fair,without a significant difference between them (AUC=0.755±0.066 for MELD vs AUC=0.696±0.070 for CTP,P=0.3). | 3 | Characterizing a large outbreak of dengue fever in Guangdong Province, China显示文摘Background:Dengue cases have been reported each year for the past 25 years in Guangdong Province,China with a recorded historical peak in 2014.This study aims to describe the epidemiological characteristics of this large outbreak in order to better understand its epidemic factors and to inform control strategies.Methods:Data for clinically diagnosed and laboratory-confirmed dengue fever cases in 2014 were extracted from the China Notifiable Infectious Disease Reporting System.We analyzed the incidence and characteristics of imported and indigenous cases in terms of population,temporal and spatial distributions.Results:A total of 45224 dengue fever cases and 6 deaths were notified in Guangdong Province in 2014,with an incidence of 47.3 per 100000 people.The elderly(65+years)represented 11.7%of total indigenous cases with the highest incidence(72.3 per 100000).Household workers and the unemployed accounted for 23.1%of indigenous cases.The majority of indigenous cases occurred in the 37th to 44th week of 2014(September and October)and almost all(20 of 21)prefecture-level cities in Guangdong were affected.Compared to the non-Pearl River Delta Region,the Pearl River Delta Region accounted for the majority of dengue cases and reported cases earlier in 2014.Dengue virus serotypes 1(DENV-1),2(DENV-2)and 3(DENV-3)were detected and DENV-1 was predominant(88.4%).Conclusions:Dengue fever is a serious public health problem and is emerging as a continuous threat in Guangdong Province.There is an urgent need to enhance dengue surveillance and control,especially for the high-risk populations in high-risk areas. | Jian-Peng Xiao Jian-Feng He Ai-Ping Deng Hua-Liang Lin Tie Song Zhi-Qiang Peng Xiao-Cheng Wu Tao Liu Zhi-Hao Li Shannon Rutherford Wei-Lin Zeng Xing Li Wen-Jun Ma Yong-Hui Zhang | 2016 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2016,5,1: | 13 |

| 6 | Incorporation of Biochar Carbon into Stable Soil Aggregates:The Role of Clay Mineralogy and Other Soil Characteristics显示文摘Aggregation and structure play key roles in water-holding capacity and stability of soils.In this study,the incorporation of carbon(C) from switchgrass biochar into stable aggregate size fractions was assessed in an Aridisol(from Colorado,USA) dominated by 2:1 clays and an Alfisol(from Virginia,USA) containing weathered mixed 1:1 and 2:1 mineralogy,to evaluate the effect of biochar addition on soil characteristics.The biochar was applied at 4 levels,0,25,50,and 100 g kg^(-1),to the soils grown with wheat in a growth chamber experiment.The changes in soil strength and water-holding capacity using water release curves were measured.In the Colorado soil,the proportion of soil occurring in large aggregates decreased,with concomitant increases in small size fractions.No changes in aggregate size fractions occurred in the Virginia soil.In the Colorado soil,C content increased from 3.3 to 16.8 g kg^(-1),whereas in the<53 μm fraction C content increased from 5.7 to 22.6 g kg^(-1) with 100 g kg^(-1)biochar addition.In the Virginia soil,C content within aggregate size fractions increased for each size fraction,except the>2 000 μm fraction.The greatest increase(from 6.2 to 22.0 g kg^(-1)) occurred in the 53–250 μm fraction.The results indicated that C was incorporated into larger aggregates in the Virginia soil,but remained largely unassociated to soil particles in the Colorado soil.Biochar addition had no significant effect on water-holding capacity or strength measurements.Adding biochar to more weathered soils with high native soil organic content may result in greater stabilization of incorporated C and result in less loss because of erosion and transport,compared with the soils dominated by 2:1 clays and low native soil organic content. | Charlene N.
