2Do anogenital gland secretionsof giant panda code for their sexual ability?显示文摘To test the hypothesis of whether ano- genital gland secretions (AGS) of giant panda code for their sexual ability, we collected AGS samples of 11 male (5 adult and 6 subadult) and 14 female (7 adult and 7 subadult) captive giant pandas (Ailuro- poda melanoleuca) from China Research and Con- servation Center for the Giant Panda at Wolong, Si- chuan, China from 1994 to 2002. The samples were analyzed by GC and GC-MS. The GC results showed that male and female pandas shared 20 constituents with equal capacity factors in the AGS. Further GC-MS analyses showed that there were a total of 95 compounds in the AGS. Nine constituents for the males and three for the females differed significantly in relative abundances between sexually active and inactive individuals, but no clear division between sexually active and inactive pandas by hierarchical cluster analyses on the relative abundances of a subset of 56 compounds. However, we were able to separate different age groups of male pandas by the constituents of AGS. 14 compounds were found sig- nificantly and negatively, and 8 compounds positively, correlated with pandas’ age by year. Our results suggest that the information contained in the AGS of panda might not code for pandas’ sexual ability but might for their age. 3Characteristics of porosity and permeability layer of fossil Halimeda reef mineral rock of Miocene in the Xisha Islands and its genetic model显示文摘Halimeda is one of the major reef-building algas in the middle Miocene of Xisha, and one of the significant reefbuilding algas in the algal reef oil and gas field of the South China Sea. However, there have been few reports regarding the characteristics of mineral rocks, reservoir porosity and permeability layers, and sedimentationdiagenetic-evolution of fossil Halimeda systems. The present paper briefly introduces the relevant studies on chlorophyta Halimeda and the research status of oil and gas exploration. Through the 1 043 m core of the Xichen-1 well, we studied the characteristics of the mineral rocks and porosity and permeability of the middle Miocene Halimeda of the Yongle Atoll, identified and described the segments of fossil Halimeda, and pointed out that most of the segment slides are vertical sections in ovular, irregular or long strips. The overwhelming majority of these fossil Halimeda found and studied are vertical sections instead of cross sections. In this paper, knowledge regarding the cross sections of fossil Halimeda is reported and proven to be similar with the microscopic characteristics of modern living Halimeda; fossil Halimeda are buried in superposition; it is shown that there are different structures present, including typical bio-segment structure, and due to its feature of coexisting with red alga, tying structure, twining structure and encrusting structure are all present; and finally, it is suggested to classify the fossil Halimeda into segment algal reef dolomites. In addition, all of the studied intervals are moderately dolomitized. Secondary microcrystalline-dolosparite dominates the original aragonite raphide zones,and aphanitic-micrite dolomite plays the leading role in the cortexes and medullas; in the aragonite raphide zones between medulla and cysts, secondary dissolved pores and intercrystalline pores are formed inside the segments, and algal frame holes are formed between segments; therefore, a pore space network system(dissolved pores + intragranular dissolved pores—intercrystalline pores + algal frame holes) is established. Segment Halimeda dolomite has a porosity of 16.2%–46.1%, a permeability of 0.203×10–3–2 641×10–3 μm2, and a throatradius of 23.42–90.43 μm, therefore it is shown to be a good oil and gas reservoir. For the reasons mentioned above, we suggest building the neogene organic reef-modern reef sedimentation-diagenetic-evolution models for the Xisha Islands.XU Hong ZHU Yurui EBERLI G.P. 7Mechanical theorem proving in the surfaces using the characteristic set method and Wronskian determinant显示文摘In this paper, we generalize the method of mechanical theorem proving in curves to prove theorems about surfaces in differential geometry with a mechanical procedure. We improve the classical result on Wronskian determinant, which can be used to decide whether the elements in a partial differential field are linearly dependent over its constant field. 9Comparison of social interaction and neural activation in the main olfactory bulb and the accessory olfactory bulb between Microtus mandarinus and Microtus fortis显示文摘To gain insight into the function of AOB and MOB during different social interaction and in different vole species,the behaviors and neural activation of the olfactory bulbs in social interactions of mandarin voles Microtus mandarinus and reed voles Microtus fortis were compared in the present research.Mandarin voles spent significantly more time attacking and sniffing their opponents and sniffing sawdust than reed voles.During same sex encounters,mandarin voles attacked their opponents for a significantly longer time and sniffed its opponent for shorter time compared with male-female interactions.However,no significant behavioral differences were found during encounters of two individual reed voles,regardless of gender composition of the pair.Using c-Fos as an indicator of neural activation,we observed that neural activation was significantly higher in almost all sub-regions of the main olfactory bulb(MOB)and the accessory olfactory bulb(AOB)of mandarin voles compared with reed voles.Numbers of c-Fos-ir neurons in almost all sub-regions of the AOB and the MOB during male-female interactions were also higher than those in interactions of the same sex.Anterior-posterior ratios of Fos-ir neurons in the AOBM(AOBMR)and the AOBG(AOBGR)in male-female interaction were significantly higher than those in interaction of the same sex.The AOBMR of male mandarin voles and reed voles were larger than those of females in male-female interactions.Behavioral patterns are consistent with cellular activity patterns.Consistent level of neural activation in MOB and AOB suggests important roles of both the main olfactory bulb and the accessory olfactory bulb in social interaction in two species.Fadao TAI Wanying WANG Hugh BRODERS Ruyong SUN Limin LIU Hongyuan WANG 2009Current Zoology2009,55,4:1

17Polymorphisms of ERCC1, XPD, XRCC1 and XPG Predict Clinical Outcome in Advanced Gastric Cancer Patients Receiving Oxaliplatin-Based Chemotherapy in Chinese Population显示文摘OBJECTIVE To investigate whether polymorphisms in ERCC1,XPD,XPG,XRCC1 genes are associated with clinical outcomes inadvanced gastric cancer (AGC) patients treated with oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy.METHODS The genetic polymorphisms in ERCC1,XPD,XPG,XRCC1 were determined in 94 advanced gastric cancer patientstreated with oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy,using TaqMan-MGBprobes.The clinical response of 60 patients with stage Ⅳ disease,time to progression (TTP) and overall survival (OS) of 94 patientswere evaluated.RESULTS The overall disease control rate (CR + PR + SD) of the60 patients in stage Ⅳ was 70% (42/60).Patients with XRCC1 399G/G,XPG 46 C/C genotypes showed enhanced response to theoxaliplatin-based chemotherapy compared to those with othergenotypes (P<0.05).The median OS and TTP of the patientswere 5.5 months and 9.0 months,respectively.Among the 4types of polymorphisms in the study,XRCC1 399 G/A + A/A,XPG 46 C/T + T/T genotypes were regarded to be associatedwith chemoresistance and poor survival (P<0.05).Combinationanalysis of the 2 polymorphisms using the Kaplan-Meier methodrevealed that the TTP and OS of the patients with a number of riskgenotypes were significantly shortened (P<0.05).No significantassociation was found between the genotypes of the XPD codon751,the ERCC1 codon 118 and the clinical outcome (P>0.05).CONCLUSION Testing for XRCC1 399,XPG 46 polymorphismsmay allow identification of the gastric cancer patients whowill benefit from oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy.Specificpolymorphisms may influence clinical outcomes of AGCpatients.Selecting specific chemotherapy based on pretreatmentgenotyping represents an innovative strategy that warrantsprospective studies.Jian Jiang Jun Liang Ruyong Yao Qingfang Li Shanai Song Yingying Sun 2009Clinical oncology and cancer resexreh2009,6,5:1
