1Chronology and geochemistry of the volcanic rocks in Woruo Mountain region,Northern Qiangtang depression:Implications to the Late Triassic volcanic-sedimentary events显示文摘A suite of sedimentary-volcaniclastic rocks intercalated with the volcanic rocks unconformably overlies the Triassic Xiaochaka Formation in the Woruo Mountain region, Qiangtang Basin, northern Tibet. The vitric tuff from the base of these strata gives a SHRIMP zircon U-Pb age of 216 ± 4.5 Ma, which represents the age of the Late Triassic volcanic-sedimentary events in the Woruo Mountain region, and is consistent with that of the formation of the volcanic rocks from the Nadi Kangri Formation in the Nadigangri-Shishui River zone. There is a striking similarity in geochemical signatures of the volcanic rocks from the Woruo Mountain region and its adjacent Nadigangri-Shishui River zone, indicating that all the volcanic rocks from the Qiangtang region might have the same magmatic source and similar tectonic setting during the Late Triassic. 2New chronological evidence for Yanshanian diagenetic mineralization in China's Altay orogenic belt显示文摘Granitoids and related pegmatitic rare-metal deposits are widespread in China’s Altay region,they used to be considered as Hercynian rocks and mineral deposits.Reported here are the^40Ar^39Ar ages of potassium-rich minerals (muscovite and microcline)in the Koktokay pegmatitic rare-metal orefield and whole-rock as well as quartz fluid-inclusion Rb-Sr isochron ages of granite and ores in the Shangkelan pegmatite rare-metal orefield. 3Conservation metagenomics: a new branch of conservation biology显示文摘Multifaceted approaches are required to monitor wildlife populations and improve conservation efforts. In the last decade,increasing evidence suggests that metagenomic analysis offers valuable perspectives and tools for identifying microbial communities and functions. It has become clear that gut microbiome plays a critical role in health, nutrition, and physiology of wildlife, including numerous endangered animals in the wild and in captivity. In this review, we first introduce the human microbiome and metagenomics, highlighting the importance of microbiome for host fitness. Then, for the first time, we propose the concept of conservation metagenomics, an emerging subdiscipline of conservation biology, which aims to understand the roles of the microbiota in evolution and conservation of endangered animals. We define what conservation metagenomics is along with current approaches, main scientific issues and significant implications in the study of host evolution, physiology,nutrition, ecology and conservation. We also discuss future research directions of conservation metagenomics. 4Effect of China's rapid development on its iconic giant panda显示文摘Anthropogenic factors affect biodiversity and have led to the contraction or extinction of animal populations worldwide.Here,we use historical demographic data,spanning the past 300 years,to show that a rapid distributional contraction of giant pandas took place during the 18th and 19th centuries alongside the increase in human population.Land-use also underwent a significant change across the areas where giant pandas were found because of government agricultural policy and the introduction of new crops.The impact of social development on giant pandas includes habitat loss and fragmentation,and range reductions.Our findings would facilitate the design of effective conservation strategies that seek to conserve and increase current habitats of this iconic species,especially in areas that our analysis has identified as places where pandas have suffered from high human pressure.ZHU LiFeng HU YiBo ZHANG ZeJun WEI FuWen 2013Chinese Science Bulletin2013,58,17:8
5GENETIC DIVERSITY AMONG CHINESE SIKA DEER (CERVUS NIPPON) POPULATIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN CHINESE AND JAPANESE SIKA DEER显示文摘Sika deer (Cervus nippon) is a cervid endemic to mainland and insular Asia and endan-gered. We analyzed variation in the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region for four subspecies to understand the genetic diversity, population structure and evolutionary history in China. 335 bp were se-quenced and eight haplotypes were identified based on 25 variable sites among the populations. Sika deer in China showed lower genetic diversity, sug-gesting a small effective population size due to habi-tat fragmentation, a low number of founder individu-als, or the narrow breeding program. AMOVA analy-sis indicated that there was significant genetic subdi-vision among the four populations, but no correlation between the genetic and geographic distance. Phy-logenetic analyses also revealed that Chinese sika deer may be divided into three genetic clades, but the genetic structure among Chinese populations was inconsistent with subspecies designations and pre-sent geographic distribution. 6Diet drives convergent evolution of gut microbiomes in bamboo-eating species显示文摘Gut microbiota plays a critical role in host physiology and health.The coevolution between the host and its gut microbes facilitates animal adaptation to its specific ecological niche.Multiple factors such as host diet and phylogeny modulate the structure and function of gut microbiota.However,the relative contribution of each factor in shaping the structure of gut microbiota remains unclear.The giant(Ailuropoda melanoleuca)and red(Ailurus styani)pandas belong to different families of order Carnivora.They have evolved as obligate bamboo-feeders and can be used as a model system for studying the gut microbiome convergent evolution.Here,we compare the structure and function of gut microbiota of the two pandas with their carnivorous relatives using 16S rRNA and metagenome sequencing.We found that both panda species share more similarities in their gut microbiota structure with each other than each species shares with its carnivorous relatives.This indicates that the specialized herbivorous diet rather than host phylogeny is the dominant driver of gut microbiome convergence within Arctoidea.Metagenomic analysis revealed that the symbiotic gut microbiota of both pandas possesses a high level of starch and sucrose metabolism and vitamin B12 biosynthesis.These findings suggest a diet-driven convergence of gut microbiomes and provide new insight into host-microbiota coevolution of these endangered species.Guangping Huang Xiao Wang Yibo Hu Qi Wu Yonggang Nie Jiuhong Dong Yun Ding Li Yan Fuwen Wei 2021Science China(Life Sciences)2021,64,1:6
7Seasonal and reproductive variation in chemical constituents of scent signals in wild giant pandas显示文摘Seasonally reproducing animals show many behavioral and physiological changes during the mating period, including increased signaling for intrasexual competition and mate attraction. We collected 102 anogenital gland secretions(AGS) from marking trees in Foping Nature Reserve, and used gas chromatography mass spectrometry to analyze these chemical composition. Of these marks, all but one were from males, confirmed with DNA analysis. We found that several chemical constituents, especially volatile compounds, were present only during the mating season and that the relative abundance of many compounds changed as a function of breeding season, whereas nonvolatile compounds were lower in the mating season. This seasonal variation in chemical composition of AGS most likely plays an important role in governing giant panda reproduction, including mate location, attraction, and male-male competition. The chemical properties of many of these putative chemosignals—such as volatility and longevity—are suggestive of these roles, and undoubtedly contribute to successful reproduction for this species with a characteristically sophisticated chemical communication system. 8Precise determination of the reference point coordinates of Shanghai Tianma 65-m radio telescope显示文摘A local survey was implemented at the newly constructed Shanghai Tianma 65-m radio telescope.In this article,the survey implementation and data analysis are described.Particularly,by application of coordinate transformation,dimensionality reduction and step fitting of parameters,as well as adoption of reliability test measures of parameters,the mathematical model of data analysis is simplified,the detrimental effects of observation noises and unevenly spatial coverage of sample points are effectively compressed,the stability and precision of parameter solutions are improved,and so the geocentric three-dimensional coordinates of the reference point of this telescope in the precision of millimeters were determined,and the axisoffset was shown not significant on the precision level of3 mm.The outcome provides important reference to the subsequent activities of antenna maintenance and scientific application,including the establishment of precise antenna orientation model,orientation guidance,fringe searching in data cross-correlation,analysis and application studies of VLBI observations.It is also important archive data for monitoring possible subsidence and lateral displacement of antenna foundation as well as deformation of antenna tracking-rail and structure.Jinling Li Fuwen Xiong Chenglei Yu Jinwei Zhang Li Guo Qingyuan Fan 2014Chinese Science Bulletin2014,59,21:5

10First evidence of prey capture and meat eating by wild Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys Rhinopithecus bieti in Yunnan,China显示文摘Most extant nonhuman primates occasionally prey on fast-moving, warm-blooded animals; however, Indriidae, Lepilemuridae,and Colobinae either scavenged for meat or did not eat meat at all. Here we report six cases of animal consumptionby the snub-nosed monkey Rhinopithecus bieti in a wild, habituated group between 2004 and 2009 in Yunnan, China. At present,only males in an all-male unit within the study group were involved in active hunting. Such a male-biased activity may be relatedto the group structure and spatial spread of R. bieti. Two females were observed eating freshly killed birds. The findings confirmedthat R. bieti engaged in scavenging and, when hunting, employed a cranio-cervical bite to kill their prey. Meat eating islikely a nutrient maximization feeding strategy in R. bieti, especially in males. A begging behavior occurred after successful preycapture. Although begging was observed, no sharing of the meat was seen. 13Home range and seasonality of Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys显示文摘Home range studies are essential for understanding an animal’s behavioral ecology and for making wildlife conservation efficient.The home range of a group of Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys(Rhinopithecus bieti Milne-Edwards,1897)was estimated using a global positioning system collar from December 2003 to October 2004 in northern Yunnan Province,China.To measure the ranging area of the study group 1291 animal locations were fixed.Based on the 100%minimum convex polygon method,the home range size was approximately 32.8 km2;based on the grid-cell method it was approximately 17.8 km2 using a 250-m grid and 23.3 km2 using a 500-m grid.We assessed seasonal changes in the home range of this monkey population and found a different ranging pattern of from earlier studies.Daily range size was calculated as 4.80±5.81 ha(mean±standard deviation),with a range of 45.66 ha(0.01–45.67 ha).Baoping REN Ming LI Yongcheng LONG Ruidong WU Fuwen WEI 2009Integrative Zoology2009,4,2:3

15Deposition and properties of highly c-oriented of InN films on sapphire substrates with ECR-plasma-enhanced MOCVD显示文摘InN films with highly c-axis preferred orientation were deposited on sapphire substrate by low-temperature electron cyclotron resonance plasma-enhanced metal organic chemical vapor deposition (ECR-PEMOCVD). Trimethyl indium (TMIn) and N 2 were applied as precursors of In and N, respectively. The quality of as-grown InN films were systematically investigated as a function of TMIn fluxes by means of reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results show that the dense and uniform InN films with highly c-axis preferred orientation are successfully achieved on sapphire substrates under optimized TMIn flux of 0.8 ml min 1 . 16Effect of rare earth La_2O_3 on the microstructure and mechanical properties of TiC/W composites显示文摘In this study, La2O3 was investigated as an additive to TiC/W composites. The composites were prepared by vacuum hot pressing, and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites were investigated. Experimental results show that the grain size of the TiC/W composites is reduced by TiC particles. When 0.5 wt.% La2O3 is added to the composites, the grain size is reduced further. According to TEM analysis, La2O3 can alleviate the aggregation of TiC particles. With La2O3 addition, the relative density of the TiC/W composites can be improved from 95.1% to 96.5%. The hardness and elastic modulus of the TiC/W + 0.5 wt.% La2O3 composite are little improved, but the flexural strength and the fracture toughness increase to 796 MPa and 10.07 MPa·m1/2 respectively, which are higher than those of the TiC/W composites.CHEN Yong WU Yucheng YU Fuwen CHEN Junling 2008Rare Metals2008,27,6:2
17Characteristics of night-time sleeping places selected by golden monkeys(Rhinopithecus bieti)in the Samage Forest,Baima Snow Mountain Nature Reserve,China显示文摘We examined the criteria for sleeping place selection in a social band of Rhinopithecus bieti(black-and-white snubnosed or golden monkeys)living in the mountainous Samage Forest,Baima Snow Mountain Nature Reserve,Yunnan,China.We performed principal component analysis and found that slope aspect,tree height and trunk diameter were likely key variables influencing selection of sleeping places.Sleeping sites were preferentially located in mixed deciduous/conifer forest.The monkeys slept exclusively in evergreen trees,of which 82%were conifers(mostly Picea likiangensis and Tsuga dumosa)and 18%evergreen oaks(Cyclobalanopsis oxyodon and Quercus spp.).Sleeping trees were tall(mean 30.5 m),had high boles(mean 18.4 m),large diameters(mean 62.6 cm)and large crown areas(mean 57.9 m^(2)).A comparative analysis of phytological and architectural features between trees in“sleeping site plots”(n=18)and trees in“non-sleeping-site plots”(n=66)revealed that diameter,crown surface area and tree height were significantly(P<0.01)larger in the former compared with the latter.All investigated roosting sites were situated on steep mountain slopes.Valleys and mountain ridges were avoided.We also detected re-use of roosting sites on several occasions,but not on consecutive nights.It is most likely that a mix of factors(stability of trees,access to food,unit cohesion,monitoring potential)explains the pattern of sleeping site preference,but predation at night seems to be only slightly important.Climate appears to have a profound influence on patterns of sleeping site selection in the monkeys’harsh temperate habitat.This is demonstrated by the monkeys’preference for mixed forest at medium elevations over montane fir forest at high elevations and slopes instead of ridges,with reduced exposure to wind and precipitation inherent in the former.We also emphasize the possibly substantial role that non-environmental factors(the nature of social organization and socio-behavioral strategies)play in determining sleeping site use in R.bieti and other primates.Dayong LI Cyril C.GRUETER Baoping REN Qihai ZHOU Ming LI Zhengsong PENG Fuwen WEI 2006Integrative Zoology2006,1,4:2

19Sex-related gene and sex identification of Crested Ibis Nipponia nippon (Ciconiifor-mes: Threskiornithidae)显示文摘The Crested Ibis (Nipponia nippon) is a critical endangered species of the world. At present, a reintroduction program will be conducted to save this species essentially. However, because the Crested Ibise is a sexual alike bird, it is very difficult to identify the sex from the morphological character. In order to identify the sex easily and select the right individuals for captive breeding and reintroduction, the sex related gene on W chromosome was amplified and the sex of three Crested Ibises were also identified in the present study. The 262bp fragment was also sequenced, and we found that there were 13 different nucleotide sites with 2.25 of transition/transversion based on the comparison with that of the Oriental White Stork. 20Lineage-specific evolution of bitter taste receptor genes in the giant and red pandas implies dietary adaptation显示文摘Taste 2 receptors(TAS2R)mediate bitterness perception in mammals,thus are called bitter taste receptors.It is believed that these genes evolved in response to species-specific diets.The giant panda(Ailuropoda melanoleuca)and red panda(Ailurus fulgens styani)in the order Carnivora are specialized herbivores with an almost exclusive bamboo diet(>90%bamboo).Because bamboo is full of bitter tasting compounds,we hypothesized that adaptive evolution has occurred at TAS2R genes in giant and red pandas throughout the course of their dietary shift.Here,we characterized 195 TAS2R genes in 9 Carnivora species and examined selective pressures on these genes.We found that both pandas harbor more putative functional TAS2R genes than other carnivores,and pseudogenized TAS2R genes in the giant panda are different from the red panda.The purifying selection on TAS2R1,TAS2R9 and TAS2R38 in the giant panda,and TAS2R62 in the red panda,has been strengthened throughout the course of adaptation to bamboo diet,while selective constraint on TAS2R4 and TAS2R38 in the red panda is relaxed.Remarkably,a few positively selected sites on TAS2R42 have been specifically detected in the giant panda.These results suggest an adaptive response in both pandas to a dietary shift from carnivory to herbivory,and TAS2R genes evolved independently in the 2 pandas.Our findings provide new insight into the molecular basis of mammalian sensory evolution and the process of adaptation to new ecological niches.Lei SHAN Qi WU Le WANG Lei ZHANG Fuwen WEI 2018Integrative Zoology2018,13,2:2
