| 1 | Soil Microbiological Activity and Carbon Dynamics in the Current Climate Change Scenarios:A Review显示文摘Microbial activities are affected by a myriad of factors with end points involved in nutrient cycling and carbon sequestration issues.Because of their prominent role in the global carbon balance and their possible role in carbon sequestration, soil microbes are very important organisms in relation to global climate changes. This review focuses mainly on the responses of soil microbes to climate changes and subsequent effects on soil carbon dynamics. An overview table regarding extracellular enzyme activities(EAA) with all relevant literature data summarizes the effects of different ecosystems under various experimental treatments on EAA. Increasing temperature, altered soil moisture regimes, and elevated carbon dioxide significantly affect directly or indirectly soil microbial activities.High temperature regimes can increase the microbial activities which can provide positive feedback to climate change, whereas lower moisture condition in pedosystem can negate the increase, although the interactive effects still remain unanswered. Shifts in soil microbial community in response to climate change have been determined by gene probing, phospholipid fatty acid analysis(PLFA),terminal restriction length polymorphism(TRFLP), and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis(DGGE), but in a recent investigations,omic technological interventions have enabled determination of the shift in soil microbe community at a taxa level, which can provide very important inputs for modeling C sequestration process. | 3 | Pharmacotherapy for the management of achalasia: Current status, challenges and future directions显示文摘This article reviews currently available pharmacological options available for the treatment of achalasia, with a special focus on the role of botulinum toxin(BT) injection due to its superior therapeutic effect and side effect profile. The discussion on BT includes the role of different BT serotypes, better pharmacological formulations, improved BT injection techniques, the use of sprouting inhibitors, designer recombinant BT formulations and alternative substances used in endoscopic injections. The large body of ongoing research into achalasia and BT may provide a stronger role for BT injection as a form of minimally invasive, cost effective and efficacious form of therapy for patients with achalasia. | 6 | Lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio can predict mortality in pancreatic adenocarcinoma显示文摘AIM To determine if the lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio(LMR) could be helpful in predicting survival in patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma.METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of all patients diagnosed with pancreatic adenocarcinoma in the VA North Texas Healthcare System from January 2005 to December 2010. The LMR was calculated from peripheral blood cell counts obtained at the time of diagnosis of pancreatic cancer by dividing the absolute lymphocyte count by the absolute monocyte count. A Univariable Cox regression analysis was performed using these data, and hazard ratios(HR) and 95%CI were calculated. The median LMR(2.05) was used to dichotomize patients into high-LMR and low-LMR groups and the log rank test was used to compare survivalbetween the two groups.RESULTS We identified 97 patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma(all men, 66% white, 30% African-American). The mean age and weight at diagnosis were 66.0 ± 0.9(SEM) years and 80.4 ± 1.7 kg respectively. Mean absolute lymphocyte and monocyte values were 1.50 ± 0.07 K/mL and 0.74 ± 0.03 K/mL respectively. Mean, median and range of LMR was 2.36, 2.05 and 0.4-12 respectively. In the univariable Cox regression analysis, we found that an increased LMR was a significant indicator of improved overall survival in patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma(HR = 0.83; 95%CI: 0.70-0.98; P = 0.027). Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed an overall median survival of 128 d(95%CI: 80-162 d). Layered double hydroxides could be fabricated with combination of different divalent(Cd^(2+), Mn^(2+), Fe^(2+), Pb^(2+)) and trivalent(Al^(3+), Cr^(3+), Fe^(3+)) metals and layered arrangement imparts unique properties such as adsorption properties and catalytic properties in these compounds. Exciting feature of these compounds is the memory effect. | 11 | Development and testing of a detailed kinetic mechanism of natural gas combustion in internal combustion engine显示文摘A detailed chemical mechanism to describe the combustion of natural gas in internal combustion (IC) engine has been developed,which is consisting of 233 reversible reactions and 79 species.This mechanism accounts for the oxidation of methane,ethane,propane and nitrogen.It has been tested using IC engine model of CHEMKIN 4.1.1 and experimental measurements.The performance of the proposed mechanism was evaluated at various equivalence ratios (φ=0.6 to φ=1.3),initial reactor conditions (Tini=500 to 3500 ℃;Pini=1.0 to 10 atm) and engine speed (2000-7000 rpm).The proposed kinetic mechanism shows good concordances with GRI3.0 mechanism especially in the prediction of temperature,pressure and major product species (H2O,CO2) profiles at stoichiometric conditions (φ=1.0).The experimental results of measured cylinder pressure,species fractions were also in agreement with simulation results derived from the proposed kinetic mechanism.The proposed mechanism successfully predicts the formation of gaseous pollutants (CO,NO,NO2,NH3) in the engine exhaust.Although there are some discrepancies among each simulation profile,the proposed detailed mechanism is good to represent the combustion of natural gas in IC engine. | M.Mansha A.R.Saleemi Badar M.Ghauri Naveed Ramzan | 2010 | Journal of Natural Gas Chemistry2010,19,2: | 2 |
