| 2 | Zigzag Zinc Blende ZnS Nanowires:Large Scale Synthesis and Their Structure Evolution Induced by Electron Irradiation显示文摘Large scale zigzag zinc blende single crystal ZnS nanowires have been successfully synthesized during a vapor phase growth process together with a small yield of straight wurtzite single crystal ZnS nanowires.AuPd alloy nanoparticles were utilized to catalyze a vapor-solid-solid growth process of both types of ZnS nanowires,instead of the more common vapor-liquid-solid growth process.Surprisingly,the vapor-phase grown zigzag zinc blende ZnS nanowires are metastable under high-energy electron irradiation in a transmission electron microscope,with straight wurtzite nanowires being much more stable.Upon exposure to electron irradiation,a wurtzite ZnO nanoparticle layer formed on the zigzag zinc blende ZnS nanowire surface with concomitant displacement damage.Both electron inelastic scattering and surface oxidation as a result of electron-beam heating occur during this structure evolution process.When prolonged higher-voltage electron irradiation was applied,local zinc blende ZnS nanowire bodies evolved into ZnS-ZnO nanocables,and dispersed ZnS-ZnO nanoparticle networks.Random AuPd nanoparticles were observed distributed on zigzag ZnS nanowire surfaces,which might be responsible for a catalytic oxidation effect and speed up the surface oxidation-induced structure evolution. | Daesoo Kim Paresh Shimpi Pu-Xian Gao | 2009 | Nano Research2009,2,12: | 5 |
| 3 | Clinical-radiological-pathological correlation of cavernous sinus hemangioma: Incremental value of diffusion-weighted imaging显示文摘AIM To elucidate the clinical, magnetic resonance imaging(MRI), pathological features of these lesions and asses the incremental value of diffusion-weighted imaging(DWI) in diagnosing them.METHODS Fifteen consecutive patients(11 females and 4 males; mean age 40.93 years; age range 13-63 years) with cavernous sinus hemangiomas(CSH) who underwent examination between November 2008 and May 2016 were included for the analysis. MRI, clinical and surgical findings of each patient was retrospectively reviewed. DWI were also analysed and mean-apparent diffusion coefficient(ADC) value was calculated. Eleven patients underwent surgical removal of the lesion and 2 patients had biopsy only. Diagnosis of CSH was confirmed histologically in 13 patients.RESULTS Eleven patients(73%) presented with headaches and 10(66%) had cranial nerve involvement. Extra cavernous sinus extension was noted in 14(94%). Surgery was performed in 13(87%) and post-operative radiation was given to 4(28%) patients. Thirteen patients remained asymptomatic on follow up. Three conspicuous imaging features were highly suggestive of the diagnosis: Lack of diffusion restriction(100%), homogeneous hyperintensity on T2 weighted image sequences(93.3%) and intense post-contrast enhancement(100%). The mean ADC was 1.82 × 10-3 ± 0.2186 cm2/s.CONCLUSION T1-weighted hypointensity with homogeneous hyperintensity on T2-weighted sequences, intense enhancement and absence of hemosiderin within the lesion on GRE sequence favour the diagnosis. | 4 | Temporal changes in inflammatory mitochondria-enriched microRNAs following traumatic brain injury and effects of miR-146a nanoparticle delivery显示文摘MicroRNAs(miRNAs)are small non-coding RNA molecules that regulate post-transcriptional gene expression and contribute to all aspects of cellular function.We previously reported that the activities of several mitochondria-enriched miRNAs regulating inflammation(i.e.,miR-142-3p,miR-142-5p,and miR-146a)are altered in the hippocampus at 3–12 hours following a severe traumatic brain injury.In the present study,we investigated the temporal expression profile of these inflammatory miRNAs in mitochondria and cytosol fractions at more chronic post-injury times following severe controlled cortical impact injury in rats.In addition,several inflammatory genes were analyzed in the cytosol fractions.The analysis showed that while elevated levels were observed in cytoplasm,the mitochondria-enriched miRNAs,miR-142-3p and miR-142-5p continued to be significantly reduced in mitochondria from injured hippocampi for at least 3 days and returned to near normal levels at 7 days post-injury.Although not statistically significant,miR-146a also remained at reduced levels for up to 3 days following controlled cortical impact injury,and recovered by 7 days.In contrast,miRNAs that are not enriched in mitochondria,including miR-124a,miR-150,miR-19b,miR-155,and miR-223 were either increased or demonstrated no change in their levels in mitochondrial fractions for 7 days.The one exception was that miR-223 levels were reduced in mitochondria at 1 day following injury.No major alterations were observed in sham operated animals.This temporal pattern was unique to mitochondria-enriched miRNAs and correlated with injury-induced changes in mitochondrial bioenergetics as well as expression levels of several inflammatory markers.These observations suggested a potential compartmental re-distribution of the mitochondria-enriched inflammatory miRNAs and may reflect an intracellular mechanism by which specific miRNAs regulate injury-induced inflammatory signaling.To test this,we utilized a novel peptide-based nanoparticle strategy for in vitro and in vivo delivery of a miR-146a mimic as a potential therapeutic strategy for targeting nuclear factor-kappa B inflammatory modulators in the injured brain.Nanoparticle delivery of miR-146a to BV-2 or SH-SY5Y cells significantly reduced expression of TNF receptor-associated factor 6(TRAF6)and interleukin-1 receptor-associated kinase 1(IRAK1),two important modulators of the nuclear factor-kappa B(NF-κB)pro-inflammatory pathway.Moreover,injections of miR-146a containing nanoparticles into the brain immediately following controlled cortical impact injury significantly reduced hippocampal TNF receptor-associated factor 6 and interleukin-1 receptor-associated kinase 1 levels.Taken together,our studies demonstrate the subcellular alteration of inflammatory miRNAs after traumatic brain injury and establish proof of principle that nanoparticle delivery of miR-146a has therapeutic potential for modulating pro-inflammatory effectors in the injured brain.All of the studies performed were approved by the University of Kentucky Institutional Animal Care and Usage Committee(IACUC protocol#2014-1300)on August 17,2017. | Wang-Xia Wang Paresh Prajapati Hemendra J.Vekaria Malinda Spry Amber L.Cloud Patrick G.Sullivan Joe E.Springer | 2021 | Neural Regeneration Research2021,16,3: | 3 |
| 5 | Integration of silicon nanowires in solar cell structure for efficiencyenhancement: A review显示文摘Silicon nanowires (SiNWs) are a one-dimensional semiconductor, which shows promising applications indistinct areas such as photocatalysis, lithium-ion batteries, gas sensors, medical diagnostics, drug delivery,and solar cell. From an implementation point of view, SiNWs are fabricated using either a topdownor bottom-up approach, and SiNWs are both optically and electronically active. SiNWs enhancesthe efficiency of the solar cell due to better electronic, optical, and physical properties that can becontrolled by tuning the physical dimensions of SiNWs. The SiNWs shows an inherent capability to beutilized in radial or coaxial p-n junction solar cells, to stipulate orthogonal photon absorption, antireflection,and enhanced carrier collection. | 6 | Comparative study of endoscopy vs.transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt in the management of gastric variceal bleeding显示文摘Background and Aim:Gastric varices are associated with high mortality.There have been conflicting reports on whether endoscopic treatment with cyanoacrylate or the placement of a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt(TIPS)is more effective in the treatment of gastric varices.We compared the outcomes of patients treated with cyanoacrylate glue or TIPS for the management of acute gastric variceal bleeding.Methods:The study was designed as a retrospective cohort analysis of patients undergoing either TIPS or endoscopic treatment with cyanoacrylate for acute gastric variceal bleeding at our institution from 2001 to 2011.Primary compared to studied between the two treatment modalities were the short-term treatment outcomes,including re-bleeding within 30 days,length of hospital stay and in-hospital mortality.Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was performed to assess factors associated with in-hospital mortality.Results:A total of 169 patients were included in the analysis.The TIPS arm contained 140 patients and the cyanoacrylate arm contained 29 patients.There was no evidence to suggest any significant differences in demographics or disease severity.There were no differences between the TIPS arm and the cyanoacrylate armtwo groups in treatment outcomes including re-bleeding within 30 days(17.4%vs.17.2%;P=0.98),median length of stay in the hospital(4.5 days vs.6.0 days;P紏0.35)or in-hospital mortality(9.0%vs.11.1%;P=0.74).In-hospital mortality was evaluated for 149 patients and lower albumin(P=0.015),higher MELD score(P<0.001),higher CTP score(P=0.005)and bleeding(P=0.008)were all significantly associated with in-hospital death.Conclusion:These findings suggest that both treatments are equally effective.Cyanoacrylate offers a safe,effective alternative to TIPS for gastric varices,and physician may choose the best therapy for each patient,factoring in the availability of TIPS or cyanoacrylate,the individual patient’s presentation,and cost. | Gursimran Singh Kochhar Udayakumar Navaneethan Jason Hartman Jose Mari Parungao Rocio Lopez Ranjan Gupta Baljendra Kapoor Paresh Mehta Madhu Sanaka | 2015 | Gastroenterology Report2015,3,1: | 2 |
