Review of biosensing with whispering-gallery mode lasers显示文摘Lasers are the pillars of modern optics and sensing.Microlasers based on whispering-gallery modes(WGMs)are miniature in size and have excellent lasing characteristics suitable for biosensing.WGM lasers have been used for labelfree detection of single virus particles, detection of molecular electrostatic changes at biointerfaces, and barcode-type live-cell tagging and tracking. The most recent advances in biosensing with WGM microlasers are described in this review. We cover the basic concepts of WGM resonators, the integration of gain media into various active WGM sensors and devices, and the cutting-edge advances in photonic devices for micro-and nanoprobing of biological samples that can be integrated with WGM lasers.Nikita Toropov Gema Cabello Mariana P.Serrano Rithvik R.Gutha Matias Rafti Frank Vollmer 2021Light(Science & Applications)2021,10,3:12
Therapeutic options for HER-2 positive breast cancer: Perspectives and future directions显示文摘During the last 15 years we have witnessed an unprecedented expansion in the drugs developed to target human epidermal growth factor receptor-2(HER-2) positive breast cancer. Trastuzumab, pertuzumab, adotrastuzumab emtansine and lapatinib are currently food and drug administration(FDA)-approved for the treatment of breast cancer patients with HER-2 overexpressed. However, given the amount of information gathered from years of uninterrupted clinical research, it is essential to have periodic updates that succinctly recapitulate what we have learnt over these last years and help us to apply that information in our daily practice. This review will pursue that objective. We will summarize the most relevant and updated informationrelated to the state of the art management of HER-2 positive breast cancer in all the clinical scenarios including the adjuvant, neoadjuvant and metastatic settings. But we will also critically appraise that literature in order to highlight some key clinical concepts that should not be overlooked. Lastly, this review will also point out some of the most promising strategies that are currently being tested and may soon become available.Gonzalo Recondo Jr Enrique Dìaz Canton Màximo de la Vega Martin Greco Gonzalo Recondo Sr Matias E Valsecchi 2014World Journal of Clinical Oncology2014,5,3:7
Morphological and functional evaluation of chronic pancreatitis with magnetic resonance imaging显示文摘Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)techniques for assessment of morphology and function of the pancreas have been improved dramatically the recent years and MRI is very often used in diagnosing and follow-up of chronic pancreatitis(CP)patients.Standard MRI including fat-suppressed T1-weighted and T2-weighted imaging techniques reveal decreased signal and glandular atrophy of the pancreas in CP.In contrast-enhanced MRI of the pancreas in CP the pancreatic signal is usually reduced and delayed due to decreased perfusion as a result of chronic inflammation and fibrosis. Thus, morphological changes of the ductal system can be assessed by magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography(MRCP).Furthermore,secretin-stimulated MRCP is a valuable technique to evaluate side branch pathology and the exocrine function of the pancreas and diffusion weighted imaging can be used to quantify both parenchymal fibrotic changes and the exocrine function of the pancreas. These standard and advanced MRI techniques are supplementary techniques to reveal morphological and functional changes of the pancreas in CP.Recently, spectroscopy has been used for assessment of metabolite concentrations in-vivo in different tissues and may have the potential to offer better tissue characterization of the pancreas.Hence, the purpose of the present review is to provide an update on standard and advanced MRI techniques of the pancreas in CP.Tine Maria Hansen Matias Nilsson Mikkel Gram Jens Brφndum Frφkjr 2013World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,42:7
Light Perception:A Matter of Time显示文摘Optimizing the perception of external cues and regulating physiology accordingly help plants to cope with the constantly changing environmental conditions to which they are exposed. An array of photoreceptors and intricate signaling pathways allow plants to convey the surrounding light information and synchronize an endogenous timekeeping system known as the circadian clock. This biological clock integrates multiple cues to modulate a myriad of downstream responses, timing them to occur at the best moment of the day and the year.Notably, the mechanism underlying entrainment of the light-mediated clock is not clear. This review addresses known interactions between the light-signaling and circadian-clock networks, focusing on the role of light in clock entrainment and known molecular players in this process.Sabrina E.Sanchez Matias L.Rugnone Steve A.Kay 2020Molecular Plant2020,13,3:5

Non-operative management of pancreatic trauma in adults显示文摘To the Editor:Pancreatic trauma accounts for 0.4%-2.0%of all trauma-related injuries worldwide[1-3].The American Association for the Surgery of Trauma(AAST)categorizes pancreatic injury according to the severity[4].Pancreatic injury involving transection of the gland(grades III to V)typically requires surgical management[4].However,pancreatic trauma, especially in children and young adults, can be managed without surgery[5].This study reports the outcome of a policy of preferential non-operative management of pancreatic trauma in adults.Nadia Matias a Santhalingam Jegatheeswaran a Vinotha Nadarajah Aali J.Sheen Saurabh Jamdar Ajith K.Siriwardena 2020Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Diseases International2020,19,6:3
Large gangliocytic paraganglioma of the duodenum:A rare entity显示文摘Gangliocytic paragangliomas are rare tumors that almost exclusively occur within the second portion of the duodenum. Although these tumors generally have a benign clinical course, they have the potential to recur or metastasize to regional lymph nodes. The case report presented here describes a 57-year-old female patient with melena, progressive asthenia, anemia, and a mass in the second-third portion of the duodenum that was treated by local excision. The patient was diagnosed with a friable bleeding tumor. The histologic analysis showed that the tumor was a 4 cm gangliocytic paraganglioma without a malignant cell pattern. In the absence of local invasion or distant metastasis, endoscopic resection represents a feasible, curative therapy. Although endoscopic polypectomy is currently considered the treatment of choice, it is not recommended if the size of the tumor is > 3 cm and/or there is active or recent bleeding. Patients diagnosed with a gangliocytic paraganglioma should be closely followed-up for possible local recurrence.Alejandra Gordillo Hernández Eduardo Dominguez-Adame Lanuza Auxiliadora Cano Matias Rosario Perez Huertas Katherine Maria Gallardo Rodriguez Purificacion Gallinato Perez Fernando Oliva Mompean 2015World Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery2015,7,8:2

Advances and new perspectives in the treatment of metastatic colon cancer显示文摘During the last decade we have witnessed an unprec-edented outburst of new treatment approaches for the management of metastatic colon cancer.Anti-angio-genic drugs, epidermal growth factor receptor blockers and multi-kinase inhibitors have all resulted in small but consistent improvement in clinical outcomes. However, this progress has paradoxically leaded us into new chal-lenges.In many cases the clinical development was done in parallel and the lack of head-to-head compari-son evolved into circumstances where several valid new'standards of care'are available.Even though desir-able in essence, the availability of many options as well as different possible combinations frequently leaves the busy clinician in the difficult situation of having to choose between one or the other, sometimes without solid evidence to support each decision. In addition, progress never stops and new agents are continuously tested. For these reason this review will try to summa-rize all the clinical trials that constitute the theoretical framework that support our daily practice but will also procure the reader with rational answers to common clinical dilemmas by critically appraising the current literature.Lastly,we will provide with a compilation of promising new agents that may soon become our next line of defense against this deadly disease.Gonzalo Recondo Jr Enrique Díaz-Cantón Máximo de la Vega Martin Greco Gonzalo Recondo Sr Matias E Valsecchi 2014World Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology2014,6,7:2

Impairment of pre-mRNA splicing in liver disease: Mechanisms and consequences显示文摘Pre-mRNA splicing is an essential step in the process of gene expression in eukaryotes and consists of the removal ofintrons and the linking of exons to generate mature mRNAs. This is a highly regulated mechanism that allows the alternative usage of exons, the retention ofintronic sequences and the generation of exonic sequences of variable length. Most human genes undergo splicing events, and disruptions of this process have been associated with a variety of diseases, including cancer. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a molecularly heterogeneous type of tumor that usually develops in a cirrhotic liver. Alterations in pre-mRNA splicing of some genes have been observed in liver cancer, and although still scarce, the available data suggest that splicing defects may have a role in hepatocarcinogenesis. Here we briefly review the general mechanisms that regulatepre-mRNA splicing, and discuss some examples that illustrate how this process is impaired in liver tumorigenesis, and may contribute to HCC development. We believe that a more thorough examination of pre-mRNA splicing is still needed to accurately draw the molecular portrait of liver cancer. This will surely contribute to a better understanding of the disease and to the development of new effective therapies.Carmen Berasain Saioa Gońi Josefa Castillo Maria Ujue Latasa Jesús Prieto Matias A Avila 2010World Journal of Gastroenterology2010,16,25:2
