Control of Bird Feeding Behavior by Tannin1 through Modulating the Biosynthesis of Polyphenols and Fatty Acid-Derived Volatiles in Sorghum显示文摘Bird predation during seed maturation causes great loss to agricultural production. In this study, through GWAS analysis of a large-scale sorghum germplasm diversity panel,we identified that Tannin1,which encodes a WD40 protein functioning in the WD40/MYB/bHLH complex, controls bird feeding behavior in sorghum.Metabolic profiling analysis showed that a group of sorghum accessions preferred by birds contain mutated tan1-a/b alleles and accumulate significantly lower levels of anthocyanins and condensed tannin compounds. In contrast,a variety of aromatic and fatty acid-derived volatiles accumulate at significantly higher levels in these bird-preference accessions. We subsequently conducted both sparrow feeding and sparrow volatile attractant assays, which confirmed, respectively, the antifeedant and attractant functions of these differentially accumulated metabolites. In addition, the connection between the biosynthesis pathway of anthocyanin and proanthocyanidin and the pathway of fatty acid–derived volatile biosynthesis was demonstrated by discovering that Tannin1 complex modulates fatty acid biosynthesis by regulating the expression of SbGL2 in sorghum, thus affecting the accumulation of fatty acid-derived volatiles.Taken together, our study identified Tannin1 as the gene underlying the major locus controlling bird feeding behavior in sorghum, illustrating an example of the identification of an ecologically impactful molecular mechanism from field observation and providing significant insights into the chemistry of bird–plant ecological interactions.Peng Xie Jiayang Shi Sanyuan Tang Chengxuan Chen Aimal Khan Fengxia Zhang Ying Xiong Chao Li Wei He Guodong Wang Fumin Lei Yaorong Wu Qi Xie 2019Molecular Plant2019,12,10:8
The role of climate factors in geographic variation in body mass and wing length in a passerine bird显示文摘Background: Geographic variation in body size is assumed to reflect adaptation to local environmental conditions. Although Bergmann's rule is usually sufficient to explain such variation in homeotherms, some exceptions have been documented. The relationship between altitude, latitude and body size, has been well documented for some vertebrate taxa during the past decades. However, relatively little information is available on the effects of climate variables on body size in birds. Methods: We collected the data of 267 adult Eurasian Tree Sparrow(Passer montanus) specimens sampled at 48 localities in China's mainland, and further investigated the relationships between two response variables, body mass and wing length, as well as a suit of explanatory variables, i.e. altitude, latitude, mean annual temperature(MAT), annual precipitation(PRC), annual sunshine hours(SUN), average annual wind speed(WS), air pressure(AP) and relative humidity(RH).Results: Our study showed that(1) although the sexes did not differ significantly in body mass, males had longer wings than females;(2) body mass and wing length were positively correlated with altitude but not with latitude;(3) body mass and wing length were negatively correlated with AP and RH, but not significantly correlated with WS. Body mass was positively correlated with SUN and inversely correlated with MAT. Wing length was not correlated with MAT in either sex, but was positively correlated with SUN and negatively correlated with PRC in male sparrows;(4) variation in body mass could be best explained by AP and SUN, whereas variation in wing length could be explained by RH and AP in both sexes. In addition, variation in male sparrows can be explained by SUN, WS and PRC but not in females. Conclusions: Two different proxies of body size, body mass and wing length, correlated with same geographic factors and different climate factors. These differences may reflect selection for heat conservation in the case of body mass, and for efficient flight in the case of wing length.Yanfeng Sun Mo Li Gang Song Fumin Lei Dongming Li Yuefeng Wu 2017Chinese Birds2017,,1:7
Micro structure and corrosion behavior of ALD AI2O3 film on AZ31 magnesium alloy with different surface roughness显示文摘There remains growing interest in magnesium(Mg)and its alloys,as they are the lightest structural metallic materials and potential metallic biomaterials. In spite of the greatest historical Mg usage at present, the wider use of Mg alloys remains restricted by the poor corrosion resistance.A nano amorphous film,as the composition of Al2O3,had now been deposited on the AZ31 Mg alloy substrate by atomic layer deposition(ALD).Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction(GIXRD),X-ray reflectivity(XRR),X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),atomic force microscope(AFM)and scanning electron microscopy(SEM)had been employed to identify the chemical compositions, microstructure and Al2O3/Mg interface of specimens firstly. Then corrosion behavior had been evaluated by neutral salt spray test and electrochemical measurement. The results showed that nano amorphous film made a homogeneous cover on Mg alloy. The film could improve the corrosion resistance of Mg alloy greatly, not only with a positive shift in Ecorr and a decrease in icorr, but also with a more uniform corroded mode.Furthermore, the roughness was found to be an important factor for corrosion resistant,in the way that rougher surface was corroded worse, and greater improvement would be in corrosion resistant after nano amorphous film deposition.Fumin Xu Lan Luo Lei Xiong Yong Liu 2020Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2020,8,2:5
Highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 Clade 2.3.2.1c virus in migratory birds,2014–2015显示文摘A novel Clade 2.3.2.1c H5N1 reassortant virus caused several outbreaks in wild birds in some regions of China from late 2014 to 2015.Based on the genetic and phylogenetic analyses, the viruses possess a stable gene constellation with a Clade 2.3.2.1c HA,a H9N2-derived PB2 gene and the other six genes of Asian H5N1-origin.The Clade 2.3.2.1c H5N1 reassortants displayed a high genetic relationship to a human H5N1 strain(A/Alberta/01/2014).Further analysis showed that similar viruses have been circulating in wild birds in China,Russia,Dubai(Western Asia),Bulgaria and Romania(Europe),as well as domestic poultry in some regions of Africa. The affected areas include the Central Asian,East Asian-Australasian,West Asian-East African, and Black Sea/Mediterranean flyways. These results show that the novel Clade 2.3.2.1c reassortant viruses are circulating worldwide and may have gained a selective advantage in migratory birds, thus posing a serious threat to wild birds and potentially humans.Yuhai Bi Jianjun Chen Zhenjie Zhang Mingxin Li Tianlong Cai Kirill Sharshov Ivan Susloparov Alexander Shestopalov Gary Wong Yubang He Zhi Xing Jianqing Sun Di Liu Yingxia Liu Lei Liu Wenjun Liu Fumin Lei Weifeng Shi George F. 6Patterns of magpie nest utilization by a nesting raptor community in a secondary forest显示文摘For a total of 9 years,we examined the patterns of a nesting raptor community that utilized European Magpie(Pica pica) nests in the Zuojia Natural Reserve, northeast China.Eight raptor species and two other bird species were recorded nesting in magpie nests. The reuse rate of abandoned magpie nests was 51.6%,and the number of reused nests was positively correlated with their availability.Raptors utilized 83.3% of the reused abandoned magpie nests.Nests followed for more than 1 year were reused by raptors an average of 1.13 times.Inter-specific nest usurpation was common, with 17.3% of new magpie nests being usurped by raptors, and four cases of usurpation occurred among different raptor species. At the community level,8 of 11 raptor species took over magpie nests to breed in the study area, and 91.9% of their nests came from magpie nests.European Magpies represent the core species in the nest web of the local raptor community that utilizes magpie nests. At the forest stand level, closer proximity to forest edges and greater distances from occupied raptor nests were the best predictors of nest reuse. At the nest-site level, arbor density and canopy coverage were the best predictors of nest reuse.Tong Zhou Haitao Wang Yu Liu Fumin Lei Wei Gao 2009Progress in Natural Science:Materials International2009,19,10:5
Integrative taxonomy of the Russet Bush Warbler Locustella mandelli complex reveals a new species from central China显示文摘Background: The Russet Bush Warbler Locustella(previously Bradypterus) mandelli complex occurs in mountains in the eastern Himalayas, southern China, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Indonesia. The taxonomy has been debated, with one(L. seebohmi) to four(L. seebohmi, L. mandelli, L. montis and L. timorensis) species having been recognised. Methods: We used an integrative approach, incorporating analyses of morphology, vocalizations and a molecular marker, to re-evaluate species limits in the L. mandelli complex. Results: We found that central Chinese L. mandelli differed from those from India through northern Southeast Asia to southeast China in plumage, morphometrics and song. All were easily classified by song, and(wing + culmen)/tail ratio overlapped only marginally. Both groups were reciprocally monophyletic in a mitochondrial cytochrome b(cytb) gene tree, with a mean divergence of 1.0 ± 0.2%. They were sympatric and mostly altitudinally segregated in the breeding season in southern Sichuan province. We found that the Mt Victoria(western Myanmar) population differed vocally from other L. mandelli, but no specimens are available. Taiwan Bush Warbler L. alishanensis was sister to the L. mandelli complex, with the most divergent song. Plumage, vocal and cytb evidence supported the distinctness of the south Vietnamese L. mandelli idonea. The Timor Bush Warbler L. timorensis, Javan Bush Warbler L.montis and Benguet Bush Warbler L. seebohmi differed distinctly in plumage, but among-population song variation in L. montis exceeded the differences between some populations of these taxa, and mean pairwise cytb divergences were only 0.5–0.9%. We also found that some L. montis populations differed morphologically. Conclusions: We conclude that the central Chinese population of Russet Bush Warbler represents a new species, which we describe herein, breeding at mid elevations in Sichuan, Shaanxi, Hubei, Hunan and Guizhou provinces. The taxonomic status of the other allopatric populations is less clear. However, as they differ to a degree comparable with that of the sympatric L. mandelli and the new species, we elevate L. idonea to species status, and retain L. seebohmi and L. montis as separate species, the latter with timorensis as a subspecies. Further research should focus on different populations of L. montis and the Mt Victoria population of L. mandelli.Per Alstrom Canwei Xia Pamela C Rasmussen Urban Olsson Bo Dai Jian Zhao Paul J Leader Geoff J Carey Lu Dong Tianlong Cai Paul I Holt Hung Le Manh Gang Song Yang Liu Yanyun Zhang Fumin Lei 2015Chinese Birds2015,,2:4
Phylogeography of regional fauna on the Tibetan Plateau: A review显示文摘The studies of uplift and glaciations of the Tibetan Plateau are summarized, and a series of recent case studies of the endemic species based on DNA sequences are detailed. In general, these molecular data show that all the organisms originated from Early Pliocene to Late Miocene, and then multi-stages of divergence/speciation occurred within each taxa following their original occupation on the plateau, mainly as a result of periodic glacial cycles and geographic isolation. The regional fauna may have undergone several range contractions and expansions during the Pleistocene glaciations. However, the population expansion and refugia may vary in space, time, and extent. The regional fauna of the Tibetan Plateau may be combinations of ancient movement from adjacent zoogeographical regions, speciation in situ, and postglacial colonization from adjacent areas. Geomorphic and climatic changes on the plateau definitely have a remarkable influence on the regional and adjacent biogeographic patterns, and the mechanism is very complex.Shujuan Yang Hailiang Dong Fumin Lei 2009Progress in Natural Science:Materials International2009,19,7:4
Distribution pattern of endangered bird species in China显示文摘In this study,we determined six“hotspots”for avian biodiversity conservation in China. We analyzed the distribution patterns of 183 threatened bird species in China in conjunction with geographical data to produce a distribution map that shows the concentrations of threatened species. The six biodiversity hotspots are:the western Tianshan Mountains;the Qilian and Hengduan mountains;southern Anhui, southern Jiangsu, and the Zhejiang Hills;the Songliao Plain and the northern region of the North China Plain;the island of Taiwan;and the island of Hainan.Based on our analysis of a species–habitat matrix, species were determined to be distributed mainly in broadleaved forest, grassland and meadows, urban and agricultural areas, wetlands, and bush. Most species were commonly found to have a range of three to five different habitat types.Apart from the six biodiversity hotspots, six ecological clusters were determined.Protection strategies indicating different levels of habitat priority among the biodiversity hotspots were also recommended.Fumin LEI Hongfeng ZHAO Zuohua YIN 2006Integrative Zoology2006,1,4:4
The potential drivers in forming avian biodiversity hotspots in the East Himalaya Mountains of Southwest China显示文摘Little has been published to describe or interpret Asian biodiversity hotspots, including those in the East Himalayan Mountains of Southwest China(HMSC),thus making necessary a review of the current knowledge. The Pliocene and Pleistocene geological and glacial histories of the Asian continent differ from those of Europe and North America, suggesting different mechanisms of speciation and extinction, and, thus, different responses to climate changes during the Quaternary glaciations. This short review summarizes potential drivers in shaping and maintaining high species richness and endemism of birds in the HMSC.The geographical location at the junction of different biogeographical realms, the wide range of habitats and climates along the extensive elevational range, the complex topography and the distinct geological history of this region have probably contributed to the evolution of an exceptionally species-rich and endemic-rich,specialized montane avian fauna. The Mountain systems in the HMSC may have provided refugia where species survived during the glacial periods and barriers for preventing species dispersal after the glacial periods.More studies are required to further test this refugia hypothesis by comparing more cold-tolerent and warm-tolerent species.Fumin LEI Yanhua QU Gang SONG Per ALSTRÖM Jon FJELDSÅ 2015Integrative Zoology2015,10,2:3
Incomplete lineage sorting and introgression in the diversification of Chinese spot-billed ducks and mallards显示文摘Incomplete lineage sorting and introgression are 2 major and nonexclusive causes of specieslevel non-monophyly.Distinguishing between these 2 processes is notoriously difficult because they can generate similar genetic signatures.Previous studies have suggested that 2 closely related duck species, the Chinese spot-billed duck Anas zonorhyncha and the mallard A.platyrhynchosvjere polyphyletically intermixed. Here,we utilized a wide geographical sampling, multilocus data and a coalescent-based model to revisit this system. Our study confirms the finding that Chinese spot-billed ducks and Mallards are not monophyletic. There was no apparent interspecific differentiation across loci except those at the mitochondrial DNA(mtDNA)control region and the Z chromosome(CHD1Z).Based on an isolation-with-migration model and the geographical distribution of lineages,we suggest that both introgression and incomplete lineage sorting might contribute to the observed non-monophyly of the 2 closely related duck species. The mtDNA introgression was asymmetric, with high gene flow from Chinese spot-billed ducks to Mallards and negligible gene flow in the opposite direction.Given that the 2 duck species are phenotypically distinctive but weakly genetically differentiated, future work based on genomescale data is necessary to uncover genomic regions that are involved in divergence, and this work may provide further insights into the evolutionary histories of the 2 species and other waterfowls.Wenjuan WANG Yafang WANG Fumin Lei Yang LIU Haitao WANG Jiakuan Chen 2019Current Zoology2019,65,5:2

Rapid phenotypic evolution with shallow genomic differentiation during early stages of high elevation adaptation in Eurasian Tree Sparrows显示文摘Known as the‘third polar region’,the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau represents one of the harshest highland environments in the world and yet a number of organisms thrive there.Previous studies of birds, animals and humans have focused on well-differentiated populations in later stages of phenotypic divergence. The adaptive processes during the initial phase of highland adaptation remain poorly understood. We studied a human commensal, the Eurasian Tree Sparrow, which has followed human agriculture to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.Despite strong phenotypic differentiation at multiple levels,in particular in muscle-related phenotypes, highland and lowland populations show shallow genomic divergence and the colonization event occurred within the past few thousand years. In a one-month acclimation experiment investigating phenotypic plasticity,we exposed adult lowland tree sparrows to a hypoxic environment and did not observe muscle changes.Through population genetic analyses,we identified a signature of polygenic adaptation, whereby shifts in allele frequencies are spread across multiple loci, many of which are associated with muscle-related processes. Our results reveal a case of positive selection in which polygenic adaptation appears to drive rapid phenotypic evolution, shedding light on early stages of adaptive evolution to a novel environment.Yanhua Qu Chunhai Chen Ying Xiong Huishang She Yong E Zhang Yalin Cheng Shane DuBay Dongming Li Per G P Ericson Yan Hao Hongyuan Wang Hongfeng Zhao Gang Song Hailin Zhang Ting Yang Chi Zhang Liping Liang Tianyu Wu Jinyang Zhao Qiang Gao Weiwei Zhai Fumin Lei 2020National Science Review2020,7,1:2
Analysis of human infectious avian influenza virus:Hemagglutinin genetic characteristics in Asia and Africa from 2004 to 2009显示文摘In the present study,we used nucleotide and protein sequences of avian influenza virus H5N1,which were obtained in Asia and Africa, analyzed HA proteins using ClustalX1.83 and MEGA4.0,and built a genetic evolutionary tree of HA nucleotides. The analysis revealed that the receptor specificity amino acid of A/HK/213/2003,A/Turkey/65596/2006 and etc mutated into QNG,which could bind withá-2,3 galactose andá-2,6 galactose.A mutation might thus take place and lead to an outbreak of human infections of avian influenza virus. The mutations of HA protein amino acids from 2004 to 2009 coincided with human infections provided by the World Health Organization, indicating a“low–high–highest–high–low”pattern. We also found out that virus strains in Asia are from different origins:strains from Southeast Asia and East Asia are of the same origin, whereas those from West Asia,South Asia and Africa descend from one ancestor. The composition of the phylogenetic tree and mutations of key site amino acids in HA proteins reflected the fact that the majority of strains are regional and long term, and virus diffusions exist between China,Laos,Malaysia,Indonesia,Azerbaijan,Turkey and Iraq.We would advise that pertinent vaccines be developed and due attention be paid to the spread of viruses between neighboring countries and the dangers of virus mutation and evolution.Jirong ZHANG Fumin LEI 2010Integrative Zoology2010,5,3:2

Positioning taxonomic research for the future显示文摘Why do taxonomists matter? The work of taxonomists is often understated if not completely misunderstood. Without taxonomists, organisms cannot be accurately identified, neither can these organisms be given universally accepted names, and reliably positioned in the phylogenetic tree of life. Thanks to the work of taxonomists over the last 269 years since Carl Linnaeus established the binomial system, we can now measure the health and wealth of our biodiversity in a refined, science-based inventory prescribed by stringent nomenclatural rules.Deyuan Hong Wenying Zhuang Min Zhu Keping Ma Xiaoquan Wang Dawei Huang Yalin Zhang Guodong Ren Wenjun Bu Wanzhi Cai Dong Ren Ding Yang Aiping Liang Fengyan Bai Runzhi Zhang Fumin Lei Shuqiang Li Hongzhi Kong Lei Cai Yucheng Dai Chaodong Zhu Qisen Yang Jun Chen Zhongli Sha Jianping Jiang Jing Che Donghui Wu Jiatang Li Qiang Wang Xinli Wei Ming Bai Xingyue Liu Xuexin Chen Gexia Qiao 2022Zoological Systematics2022,47,3:2
Integrative taxonomy of the Plain-backed Thrush(Zoothera mollissima)complex(Aves,Turdidae)reveals cryptic species, including a new species显示文摘Background: The Plain-backed Thrush Zoothera mollissima breeds in the Himalayas and mountains of central China. It was long considered conspecific with the Long-tailed Thrush Zoothera dixoni, until these were shown to be broadly sympatric. Methods: We revise the Z. mollissima–Z. dixoni complex by integrating morphological, acoustic, genetic(two mitochondrial and two nuclear markers), ecological and distributional datasets. Results: In earlier field observations, we noted two very different song types of 'Plain-backed' Thrush segregated by breeding habitat and elevation. Further integrative analyses congruently identify three groups: an alpine breeder in the Himalayas and Sichuan, China('Alpine Thrush'); a forest breeder in the eastern Himalayas and northwest Yunnan(at least), China('Himalayan Forest Thrush'); and a forest breeder in central Sichuan('Sichuan Forest Thrush'). Alpine and Himalayan Forest Thrushes are broadly sympatric, but segregated by habitat and altitude, and the same is probably true also for Alpine and Sichuan Forest Thrushes. These three groups differ markedly in morphology and songs. In addition, DNA sequence data from three non-breeding specimens from Yunnan indicate that yet another lineage exists('Yunnan Thrush'). However, we find no consistent morphological differences from Alpine Thrush, and its breeding range is unknown. Molecular phylogenetic analyses suggest that all four groups diverged at least a few million years ago, and identify Alpine Thrush and the putative 'Yunnan Thrush' as sisters, and the two forest taxa as sisters. Cytochrome b divergences among the four Z. mollissima sensu lato(s.l.) clades are similar to those between any of them and Z. dixoni, and exceed that between the two congeneric outgroup species. We lectotypify the name Oreocincla rostrata Hodgson, 1845 with the Z. mollissima sensu stricto(s.s.) specimen long considered its type. No available name unambiguously pertains to the Himalayan Forest Thrush. Conclusions: The Plain-backed Thrush Z. mollissima s.l. comprises at least three species: Alpine Thrush Z. mollissima s.s., with a widespread alpine breeding distribution; Sichuan Forest Thrush Z. griseiceps, breeding in central Sichuan forests; and Himalayan Forest Thrush, breeding in the eastern Himalayas and northwest Yunnan(at least), which is described herein as a new species. 'Yunnan Thrush' requires further study.Per Alstrom Pamela C.Rasmussen Chao Zhao Jingzi Xu Shashank Dalvi Tianlong Cai Yuyan Guan Ruiying Zhang Mikhail V.Kalyakin Fumin Lei Urban Olsson 2016Chinese Birds2016,,1:2

A multilocus molecular phylogeny for the avian genus Liocichla(Passeriformes:Leiothrichidae:Liocichla)显示文摘Background:Historically the babblers have been assigned to the family Timaliidae but several recent studies have attempted to rest the taxonomy of this diverse passerine assemblage on a more firm evolutionary footing. The result has been a major rearrangement of the group.A well?supported and comprehensive phylogeny for this widespread avian group is an important part of testing evolutionary and biogeographic hypotheses, especially in Asia where the babblers are a key component of many forest ecosystems. However, the genus Liocichla is poorly represented in these prior studies of babbler systematics. Methods:We used a multilocus molecular genetic approach to generate a phylogenetic hypothesis for all five cur?rently recognized species in the avian genus Liocichla.Multilocus DNA sequence data was used to construct individ?ual gene trees using maximum likelihood and species trees were estimated from gene trees using Bayesian analyses.Divergence dates were obtained using a molecular clock approach. Results:Molecular data estimate a probable window of time for the origin for the Liocichla from the mid to late Miocene, between 5.55 and 12.87 Ma.Despite plumage similarities between the insular Taiwan endemic,L.steerii, and the continental L.bugunorum and L.omeiensis, molecular data suggest that L.steerii is the sister taxon to all continen?tal Liocichla. The continental Liocichla are comprised of two lineages;a lineage containing L.omeiensis and L.bugunorum and a lineage comprised of L.phoenicea and L.ripponi.The comparatively early divergence of L.steerii within the Liocichla may be illusory due to extinct and therefore unsampled lineages.L.ripponi and L.phoenicea are parapatric with a Pleistocene split(0.07–1.88 Ma) occurring between an Eastern Himalayan L.phoenicea and a Northern Indo?china distributed L.ripponi.L.bugunorum and L.omeiensis underwent a similar split between the Eastern Himalaya(L.bugunorum) and Central China(L.omeiensis) divided by the Hengduan Mountains. Conclusions:This study supports an origin of the Liocichla occurring sometime prior to the Miocene–Pliocene boundary,a period of significant climatic upheaval in Asia. The biogeographical patterns within the Liocichla mirror those of other birds in the region and allude to common geological and climatic drivers of avian diversification in Asia.Herman L Mays Bailey D Mc Kay Dieter Thomas Tietze Cheng-Te Yao Lindsey N Miller Kathleen N Moreland Fumin Lei 2015Chinese Birds2015,,3:1
