1Efficacy of Chinese herbal medicine for lumbar disc herniation: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials显示文摘OBJECTIVE: This is a review of the effects of Chinese herbal medicine(CHM) used alone to treat lumbar disc herniation(LDH). METHORDS: A literature search of the following electronic databases from their inception to February 2013 was conducted: Chinese Biomedical databases, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Database, China Science and Technology Journal Database, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, MEDLINE, and EMBASE. Randomized controlled trials where CHM had been used to treat LDH were selected. Data extraction, quality assessment, and data analysis were carried out by two independent reviewers. RESULTS: Of the 2415 studies identified, eight with complete data on 1146 patients were selected. The methodological quality was poor in all trials. Five studies reported that CHM was better than Western Medicine [OR=2.81, 95% CI(1.27, 6.18); OR=3.34, 95% CI(1.92, 5.79); OR=2.22, 95% CI(1.08, 4.57); OR= 6.67, 95% CI(1.34, 33.28); and OR=1.94, 95% CI(1.23, 3.06)]. Two studies reported that the clinical outcome was better in CHM groups than in physiotherapy and placebo groups, [OR=3.02, 95% CI(1.08, 8.46); and OR=2.67, 95% CI(1.26, 5.64), respectively], whereas one study reported no difference between CHM and physiotherapy groups. One study reported that CHM resulted in higher Japanese Orthopedic Association scores [MD=7.78, 95% CI(6.67, 8.89)] than in a control group and another that participants treated with CHM had lower Visual Analogue Scale scores [MD=﹣0.72, 95% CI( ﹣0.86, ﹣0.58)] than those in a control group. Three studies reported that the adverse effects of CHM and Western Medicine did not differ significantly [OR=0.10, 95% CI(0.01, 1.85); OR=0.19, 95% CI(0.01, 4.07); and OR=0.07, 95% CI(0.00, 1.32)]. CONCLUSION: CHM may be more effective than other interventions for LDH; however, methodological weaknesses in the studies assessed in this review prevent a definitive conclusion. 3Estimated biomass carbon in thinned Cunninghamia lanceolate plantations at different stand-ages显示文摘Chinese fir(Cunninghamia lanceolate[Lamb.]Hook.)is a fast-growing species which is not only important as a timber-supplier,but also as an available sink for carbon(C)storage in biomass.Stand age and density are two critical factors that can determine tree C sequestration as interrelated drivers through natural self-thinning.C.lanceolate were planted using 1-year-old bare-root seedlings at the initial density of 1800 stems ha^(-1)in a 15-ha montane area of Hunan Province,China in 1987.The plantation was thinned twice 10 and 20 years after planting to leave trees of437.5±26.6,675.0±155.2 and 895.8±60.1 stems ha^(-1)as low,medium,and high densities,respectively.Tree height and diameter at breast height(DBH)were measured every2 years beginning from 23 years(2009)to 31 years(2018)after establishment,timber volume(TV)and biomass C were estimated accordingly.We did not find any interactive effect of age and density on any variables except for height.Both TV and biomass C increased with stand age or decreased in higher densities.The allometric heightDBH relationship can be fitted by an exponential risingto-maximum model with higher maximum value over time.The decline of biomass C along density fit with the inverse first-order polynomial model which indicated that at least1300-1500 stems ha^(-1)may be needed to maximize TV and biomass C for a longer term over 20 years.Therefore,to control the density to a reasonable level,over 1300 stems ha^(-1)in a rotation over 20 years old will be practical for tree biomass C in Chinese fir plantations.Xie Zhang Zhenming Wu Zhongkun Xu Liang Xu Qingqian Xu Jianzhong Lin 2021Journal of Forestry Research2021,32,4:5

5High-throughput screening identifies established drugs as SARS-CoV-2 PLpro inhibitors显示文摘A new coronavirus(SARS-CoV-2)has been identified as the etiologic agent for the COVID-19 outbreak.Currently,effective treatment options remain very limited for this disease;therefore,there is an urgent need to identify new anti-COVID-19 agents.In this study,we screened over 6,000 compounds that included approved drugs,drug candidates in clinical trials,and pharmacologically active compounds to identify leads that target the SARS-CoV-2 papain-like protease(PLpro).Together with main protease(Mpro),PLpro is responsible for processing the viral replicase polyprotein into functional units.There-fore,it is an attractive target for antiviral drug develop-ment.Here we discovered four compounds,YM155,cryptotanshinone,tanshinone I and GRL0617 that inhibit SARS-CoV-2 PLpro with IC50 values ranging from 1.39 to 5.63 pmol/L.These compounds also exhibit strong antiviral activities in cell-based assays.YM155,an anti-cancer drug candidate in clinical trials,has the most potent antiviral activity with an EC50 value of 170 nmol/L.In addition,we have determined the crystal structures of this enzyme and its complex with YM155,revealing a unique binding mode.YM155 simultaneously targets three'hot'spots on PLpro,including the substrate-binding pocket,the interferon stimulating gene product 15(ISG15)binding site and zinc finger motif.Our results demonstrate the efficacy of this screening and repur-posing strategy,which has led to the discovery of new drug leads with clinical potential for COVID-19 treatments.Yao Zhao Xiaoyu Du Yinkai Duan Xiaoyan Pan Yifang Sun Tian You Lin Han Zhenming Jin Weijuan Shang Jing Yu Hangtian Guo Qianying Liu Yan Wu Chao Peng Jun Wang Chenghao Zhu Xiuna Yang Kailin Yang Ying Lei Luke W.Guddat Wenqing Xu Gengfu Xiao Lei Sun Leike Zhang Zihe Rao Haitao Yang 2021Protein & Cell2021,12,11:4
6Preparation and application of iron oxide/persimmon tannin/graphene oxide nanocomposites for efficient adsorption of erbium from aqueous solution显示文摘Rare earth elements(REEs)are used for the developme nt of new energy materials owing to their intrinsic physicochemical property.However,excess REEs in water threaten the safety of animals,plants and humans.An efficient way to separate REEs from the water is therefore needed.In this study,a biosorbent consisting of iron oxide(Fe3 O4),persimmon tannin(PT),and graphene oxide(GO)as Fe3 O4/PT/GO was prepared,and the adsorption of trivalent erbium(Er3+)ions from aqueous solution was investigated.The adsorption process for Er3+ions conforms to pseudo-second order kinetic and the Langmuir isotherm model behavior.Thermodynamic studies indicate that the adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic.Scanning electron microscopy(SEM),X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),X-ray diffraction(XRD),thermogravimetric analysis(TGA).Fourier-transform infrared(FT-IR)spectroscopy;Brunauer-Emmett-Teller(BET)analysis,and vibrating sample magnetometer(VSM)were used to assess the adsorption mechanism of Er3+ions onto the Fe3 O4/PT/GO biosorbent.A combination of electrostatic interactions,redox reactivity and chelation are responsible for adsorption of Er3+ions on the Fe3 O4/PT/GO biosorbent,The magnetic Fe3 O4/PT/GO biosorbent can be easily separated under the magnetic field for effective recycle of Er3+ions from aqueous solution.Therefore,this new biomass composite holds great promise for wastewater treatment.Lin Gao Zhongmin Wang Chaoke Qin Zhenming Chen Mingmin Gao Na He Xi Qian Zhide Zhou Guiyin Li 2020Journal of Rare Earths2020,38,12:3
7Surface-deformation monitoring in the permafrost regions over the Tibetan Plateau,using Sentinel-1 data显示文摘Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar(D-In SAR) has been widely used to measure surface deformation over the Tibetan Plateau. However, the accuracy and applicability of the D-In SAR method are not well estimated due to the lack of in-situ validation. In this paper, we mapped the seasonal and long-term displacement of Tanggula(TGL) and Liangdaohe(LDH) permafrost regions with a stack of Sentinel-1 acquisitions using the Small Baseline Subset In SAR(SBAS-In SAR) method. In the TGL region, with its dry soils and sparse vegetation, the In SAR-derived surface-deformation trend was consistent with ground-based leveling results; long-term changes of the active layer showed a settlement rate of around 1 to 3 mm/a due to the melting of ground ice, indicating a degrading permafrost in this area. Around half of the deformation was picked up on monitoring, in contrast with in-situ measurements in LDH, implying that the D-In SAR method remarkably underestimated the surface-deformation. This phenomenon may be induced by the large soil-water content, high vegetation coverage, or a combination of these two factors in this region. 13Roles of FERONIA-like receptor genes in regulating grain size and quality in rice显示文摘Grain yield and quality are critical factors that determine the value of grain crops.In this study,we analyzed the functions of 12 FERONIA-like receptor(FLR)family members in rice and investigated their effects on grain size and quality.We found that FLR1,FLR2 and FLR8 negatively regulated grain size,and FLR15 positively regulated grain size.flr1 mutants had a higher cell number and an accelerated rate of grain filling compared to wild-type plants,which led to grains with greater widths.A mechanism underlying the regulation of grain size by FLR1 is that FLR1 is associated with OsRac1 Rho-like GTPase,a positive regulator of grain size.Regarding grain quality,the flr1 mutant had a higher percentage of chalkiness compared with wild-type plants,and seeds carrying mutations in flr3 and flr14 had endosperms with white floury cores.To elucidate the possible mechanism underlying this phenomenon,we found that FLR1 was constitutively expressed during endosperm development.RNA-seq analysis identified 2,367 genes that were differentially expressed in the flr1 mutant,including genes involved in starch and sucrose metabolism and carbon fixation.In this study,we identified the roles played by several FLR genes in regulating grain size and quality in rice and provided insights into the molecular mechanism governing the FLR1-mediated regulation of grain size.Long Wang Dandan Wang Zhuhong Yang Shun Jiang Jianing Qu Wei He Zhenming Liu Junjie Xing Youchu Ma Qinlu Lin Feng Yu 2021Science China(Life Sciences)2021,64,2:1

17Occurrence and Diversity of Pichia spp. in Marine Environments显示文摘A total of 328 yeast strains from seawater,sediments,mud of salterns,the guts of marine fish and marine algae were obtained. The results of routine identification and molecular methods show that five yeast strains obtained in this study belonged to Pichia spp.,including Pichia guilliermondii 1uv-small,Pichia ohmeri YF04d,Pichia fermentans YF12b,Pichia burtonii YF11A and Pichia anomala YF07b. Further studies revealed that Pichia anomala YF07b could produce killer toxin against pathogenic yeasts in crabs while Pichia guilliermondii 1uv-small could produce high activity of extracellular inulinase. 18Four kinds of capping materials for controlling phosphorus and nitrogen release from contaminated sediment using a static simulation experiment显示文摘We determined the effects of quartz sand(QS),water treatment plant sludge(WTPS),aluminum-based P-inactivation agent(Al-PIA),and lanthanum-modified bentonite(LMB)thin-layer capping on controlling phosphorus and nitrogen release from the sediment,using a static simulation experiment.The sediment in the experiment was sampled from Yundang Lagoon(Xiamen,Fujian Province,China),which is a eutrophic waterbody.The total phosphorus(TP),ammonium nitrogen(NH4+-N),and total organic carbon(TOC)levels in the overlying water were measured at regular intervals,and the changes of different P forms in WTPS,Al-PIA,and sediment of each system were analyzed before and after the test.The average TP reduction rates of LMB,Al-PIA,WTPS,and QS were 94.82,92.14,86.88,and 10.68%,respectively,when the release strength of sediment TP was 2.26–9.19 mg/(m^(2)·d)and the capping strength of the materials was 2 kg/m^(2).Thin-layer capping of LMB,WTPS,and Al-PIA could effectively control P release from the sediment(P<0.05).However,thin-layer capping of LMB,Al-PIA,and QS did not significantly reduce the release of ammonium N and organic matter(P>0.05).Based on our results,LMB,Al-PIA,and WTPS thin-layer capping promoted the migration and transformation of easily released P in sediment.The P adsorbed by WTPS and Al-PIA mainly occurred in the form of NAIP.Zhenming Zhou Canyang Lin Shuwen Li Shupo Liu Fei Li Baoling Yuan 2022Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering2022,16,3:0
19Occurrence and Diversity of Candida Genus in Marine Environments显示文摘A total of 317 yeast isolates from seawater,sediments,mud of salterns,guts of marine fishes and marine algae were obtained. The results of routine identification and molecular characterization showed that six isolates among these marine yeasts belonged to Candida genus as Candida intermedia for YA01a,Candida parapsilosis for 3eA2,Candida quercitrusa for JHSb,Can-dia rugosa for wl8,Candida zeylanoides for TJY13a,and Candida membranifaciens for W14-3. Isolates YA01a (Candida interme-dia),wl8 (Candida rugosa),3eA2 (Candida parapsilosis),and JHSb (Candida quercitrusa) were found producing cell-bound lipase,while isolate W14-3 (Candida membranifaciens) producing riboflavin.
