Breath and string test: A diagnostic package for the identification of treatment failure and antibiotic resistance of Helicobacter pylori without the necessity of upper gastrointestinal endoscopy显示文摘AIM: Helicobacter pylori ( H pylofi) resistance after failed eradication has a major impact on the outcome of a further treatment regimen. The aim of this study was to assess the validity of a non-invasive strategy using the 13C-urea breath test (UBT) and the gastric string test in identifying post-treatment resistance of Hpylori.METHODS: The UBT was routinely performed 4 to 6 wk after H pylorieradication therapy. Forty-two patients (24 females, 18 males, mean age 48 years) with a positive UBT were included in the study. A gastric string test using a capsule containing a 90 cm-long nylon fiber was performed. Before the capsule was swallowed, the free end of the string was taped to the cheek. After one hour in the stomach, the string was withdrawn. The distal 20 cm of the string was inoculated onto an agar plate and processed under microaerophilic conditions. Following the string test, upper gastrointestinal endoscopy was performed to obtain gastric biopsies for conventional culture.RESULTS: H pyloriwas successfully cultured from the gastric string in 34 patients (81%), but not in 5 patients due to contamination with oropharyngeal flora. Hpyloriwas cultured from the gastric biopsies obtained at endoscopy in 39 patients (93%).CONCLUSION: The UBT followed by the gastric string test in the case of treatment failure is a valid diagnostic strategy with the aim of determining the post-therapeutic antibiotic resistance of Hpyloriwith little inconvenience to the patient.Upper GI-endoscopy can be avoided in several cases by applying consequently this diagnostic package. | Andreas Leodolter Kathlen Wolle Ulrike von Arnim Stefan Kahl Gerhard Treiber Matthias P.Ebert Ulrich Peitz Peter Malfertheiner | 2005 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2005,11,4: | 10
Decomposition dynamics of coarse woody debris of three important central European tree species显示文摘Background:Coarse woody debris(CWD)is an important element of forest structure that needs to be considered when managing forests for biodiversity, carbon storage or bioenergy. To manage it effectively, dynamics of CWD decomposition should be known. Methods:Using a chronosequence approach,we assessed the decomposition rates of downed CWD of Fagus sylvatica,Picea abies and Pinus sylvestris, which was sampled from three different years of tree fall and three different initial diameter classes(>10 –≤ 20 cm,>20 –≤40 cm,>40 cm).Samples originating from wind throws in 1999 were collected along a temperature and precipitation gradient.Based on the decay class and associated wood densities, log volumes were converted into CWD mass and C content.Log fragmentation was assessed over one year for log segments of intermediate diameters(>20 – 40 cm)after 8 and 18 years of decomposition. Results:Significantly higher decomposition constants(k)were found in logs of F.sylvatica(0.054 year^(-1))than in P.abies(0.033 year^(-1))and P.sylvestris(0.032 year^(-1)).However,mass loss of P.sylvestris occurred mainly in sapwood and hence k for the whole wood may be overestimated.Decomposition rates generally decreased with increasing log diameter class except for smaller dimensions in P.abies.About 74 % of the variation in mass remaining could be explained by decomposition time(27 %),tree species(11 %),diameter(17 %),the interactive effects between tree species and diameter(4 %)as well as between decomposition time and tree species(3 %)and a random factor(site and tree; 9.5 %),whereas temperature explained only 2 %.Wood fragmentation may play a more important role than previously thought. Here, between 14 % and 30 % of the decomposition rates(for the first 18 years)were attributable to this process.Carbon(C)density(mg C · cm^(-3)),which was initially highest for F.sylvatica, followed by P.sylvestris and P.abies, decreased with increasing decay stage to similar values for all species. Conclusions:The apparent lack of climate effects on decomposition of logs in the field indicates that regional decomposition models for CWD may be developed on the basis of information on decomposition time, tree species and dimension only. These can then be used to predict C dynamics in CWD as input for C accounting models and for habitat management. | Steffen Herrmann Tiemo Kahl Jürgen Bauhus | 2015 | Forest Ecosystems2015,2,4: | 7
Prevalence of H pylori associated 'high risk gastritis' for development of gastric cancer in patients with normal endoscopic findings显示文摘AIM: To investigate the prevalence of H pylori associated corpus-predominant gastritis (CPG) or pangastritis, severe atrophy, and intestinal metaplasia (IM) in patients without any signifi cant abnormal fi ndings during upper- GI endoscopy. METHODS: Gastric biopsies from 3548 patients were obtained during upper GI-endoscopy in a 4-year period. Two biopsies from antrum and corpus were histologically assessed according to the updated Sydney-System. Eight hundred and forty-fi ve patients (mean age 54.8 ± 2.8 years) with H pylori infection and no peptic ulcer or abnormal gross fi ndings in the stomach were identifi ed and analyzed according to gastritis phenotypes using different scoring systems. RESULTS: The prevalence of severe H pylori associated changes like pangastritis, CPG, IM, and severe atrophy increased with age, reaching a level of 20% in patients of the age group over 45 years. No differences in frequencies between genders were observed. The prevalence of IM had the highest increase, being 4-fold higher at the age of 65 years versus in individuals less than 45 years. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of gastritis featuring at risk for cancer development increases with age. These findings reinforce the necessity for the histological assessment, even in subjects with normal endoscopic appearance. The age-dependent increase in prevalence of severe histopathological changes in gastric mucosa, however, does not allow estimating the individual risk forgastric cancer development-only a proper follow-up can provide this information. | Andreas Leodolter Matthias P Ebert Ulrich Peitz Kathlen Wolle Stefan Kahl Michael Vieth Peter Malfertheiner | 2006 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2006,12,34: | 4

Sister Mary Joseph's nodule as the first sign of pregnancy-associated gastric cancer:A case report显示文摘Sister Mary Joseph's nodule is an inconspicuous and uncommon clinical sign of advanced malignant disease, especially gastric cancer. Pregnancy-associated gastric cancer is an extremely rare condition and can be difficult to diagnose, due to the absence or misinterpretation of symptoms as pregnancy-related. Diagnostic aids, such as a basic chemistry panel and imaging techniques, may not show any abnormalities. We present a case of a 37-year-old pregnant patient whose umbilical nodule was the first presenting physical sign of gastric cancer, which had metastasized throughout the abdominal and pelvic regions. | Sara Fill Andrei Taran Hans-Ulrich Schulz Stefan Kahl Thomas Kalinski Bobbie Smith Serban-Dan Costa | 2008 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2008,14,6: | 3
Superconducting single-photon detectors integrated with diamond nanophotonic circuits显示文摘Photonic quantum technologies hold promise to repeat the success of integrated nanophotonic circuits in non-classical applications.Using linear optical elements, quantum optical computations can be performed with integrated optical circuits and can therefore overcome the existing limitations in terms of scalability. In addition to passive optical devices for realizing photonic quantum gates, active elements, such as single-photon sources and single-photon detectors, are essential ingredients for future optical quantum circuits.Material systems that allow for the monolithic integration of all components are particularly attractive, including III-V semiconductors, silicon and diamond. Here,we demonstrate nanophotonic integrated circuits made from high-quality polycrystalline diamond thin films in combination with on-chip single-photon detectors.By using superconducting nanowires that are coupled evanescently to traveling waves,we achieve high detection efficiencies of up to 66%as well as low dark count rates and a timing resolution of 190 ps.Our devices are fully scalable and hold promise for functional diamond photonic quantum devices. | Patrik Rath Oliver Kahl Simone Ferrari Fabian Sproll Georgia Lewes-Malandrakis Dietmar Brink Konstantin Ilin Michael Siegel Christoph Nebel Wolfram Pernice | 2015 | Light(Science & Applications)2015,4,1: | 3
Pancreatic cancer–Endosonography显示文摘EUS is the most sensitive imaging procedure for the detection of small solid pancreatic masses and is accurate in determining vascular invasion of the portal venous system. Even compared to the new CT-techniques EUS provides excellent results in preoperative staging of solid pancreatic tumors. Compared to helical CT-techniques EUS is less accurate in detecting tumor involvement of superior mesenteric artery. EUS staging and EUS-guided FNA can be performed in a single-step procedure, to establish the diagnosis of cancer. There is no known negative impact of tumor cell seeding due to EUS-FNA. Without FNA EUS and additional methods are not able to reliably distinguish between inflammatory and malignant masses. | Stefan Kahl Kerstin Schütte Peter Malfertheiner | 2007 | The Chinese-German Journal of Clinical Oncology2007,6,2: | 3

2-14 Investigation of the Thermonuclear 18Ne(α, p)21Na Reaction Rate via Resonant Elastic Scattering of 21Na + p显示文摘A nuclear astrophysics experiment was performed at CRIB (CNS low-energy Radioactive-Ion Beam separator)on Mar. 2011. The goal of this experiment is to study the reaction rate of 18Ne(,p)21Na reaction, which mightbe a key breakout reaction from the hot CNO cycle to rp-process in X-ray burst and nova. Yet its reaction rate ispoorly known.Explosive hydrogen burning is thought to be the main source of energy generation and a source of nucleosynthesisin X-ray burst and nova[1;2]. For example, XRBs are characterized by a sudden increase of X-ray emission withinonly a few seconds to a total energy output of about 1040 ergs, which is observed to repeat with some regularity. The recurrence time for single bursts can range from hours to days at the typical temperature of 0.4~2 GK. Thebursts have been interpreted as being generated by thermonuclear runaway on the surface of a neutron star thataccretes H- and He-rich material from a less evolved companion star in a close binary system. As shown in Fig. 1,under its typical temperature, the hydrogen burning in X-ray burst occurs from the hot CNO cycle: | Zhang Liyong He Jianjun Xu Shiwei H.Yamaguchi S. | 10 | Linking molecular deadwood-inhabiting fungal diversity and community dynamics to ecosystem functions and processes in Central European forests显示文摘Fungi play vital roles in the decomposition of deadwood due to their secretion of various enzymes that break down plant cell-wall complexes. The compositions of woodinhabiting fungal(WIF)communities change over the course of the decomposition process as the remaining mass of wood decreases and both abiotic and biotic conditions of the wood significantly change. It is currently not resolved which substrate-related factors govern these changes in WIF communities and whether such changes influence the deadwood decomposition rate. Here we report a study on fungal richness and community structure in deadwood of Norway spruce and European beech in temperate forest ecosystems using 454 pyrosequencing. Our aims were to disentangle the factors that correspond to WIF community composition and to investigate the links between fungal richness,taxonomically-resolved fungal identity, and microbial-mediated ecosystem functions and processes by analyzing physico-chemical wood properties,lignin-modifying enzyme activities and wood decomposition rates.Unlike fungal richness,we found significant differences in community structure between deadwood of different tree species. The composition of WIF communities was related to the physico-chemical properties of the deadwood substrates.Decomposition rates and the activities of ligninmodifying enzymes were controlled by the succession of the fungal communities and competition scenarios rather than fungal OTU richness. Our results provide further insights into links between fungal community structure and microbialmediated ecosystem functions and processes. | Björn Hoppe Witoon Purahong Tesfaye Wubet Tiemo Kahl Jürgen Bauhus Tobias Arnstadt Martin Hofrichter François Buscot Dirk Krüger | 2016 | Fungal Diversity2016,,2: | 2
