New frontiers for the materials genome initiative显示文摘The Materials Genome Initiative(MGI)advanced a new paradigm for materials discovery and design, namely that the pace of new materials deployment could be accelerated through complementary efforts in theory, computation, and experiment.Along with numerous successes, new challenges are inviting researchers to refocus the efforts and approaches that were originally inspired by the MGI.In May 2017,the National Science Foundation sponsored the workshop“Advancing and Accelerating Materials Innovation Through the Synergistic Interaction among Computation,Experiment, and Theory:Opening New Frontiers”to review accomplishments that emerged from investments in science and infrastructure under the MGI,identify scientific opportunities in this new environment, examine how to effectively utilize new materials innovation infrastructure, and discuss challenges in achieving accelerated materials research through the seamless integration of experiment, computation, and theory. This article summarizes key findings from the workshop and provides perspectives that aim to guide the direction of future materials research and its translation into societal impacts. | Juan J.de Pablo Nicholas E.Jackson Michael A.Webb Long-Qing Chen Joel E.Moore Dane Morgan Ryan Jacobs Tresa Pollock Darrell G.Schlom Eric S.Toberer James Analytis Ismaila Dabo Dean M.DeLongchamp Gregory A.Fiete Gregory M.Grason Geoffroy Hautier Yifei Mo Krishna Rajan Evan J.Reed Efrain Rodriguez Vladan Stevanovic Jin Suntivich Katsuyo Thornton Ji-Cheng Zhao | 2019 | npj Computational Materials2019,,1: | 7
Renewable hydrogen production from steam reforming of glycerol(SRG)over ceria-modified Y-alumina supported Ni catalyst显示文摘Excess crude glycerol derived as a by-product from biodiesel industry prompts the need to valorise glycerol to value-added chemicals. In this context, catalytic steam reforming of glycerol(SRG) was proposed as a promising and sustainable alternative for producing renewable hydrogen(H2).Herein,the development of nickel(Ni) supported on ceria-modified mesoporous γ-alumina(γ-Al2 O3) catalysts and their applications in catalytic SRG(at550-750℃ atmospheric pressure and weight hourly space velocity,WHSV,of 44,122 ml·g^-1·h^-1(STP)) is presented.Properties of the developed catalysts were characterised using many technique s.The findings show that ceria modification improved Ni dispersion on γ-Al2 O3 catalyst support with highly active small Ni particles, which led to a remarkable catalytic performance with the total glycerol conversion(ca.99%),glycerol conversion into gaseous products(ca.77%) and H2 yield(ca.62%).The formation rate for H2 production(14.4 ×10^(-5)mol·s^-1·g^-1, TOF(H2)=3412 s^-1) was significantly improved with the Ni@12 Ce-Al2 O3 catalyst, representing nearly a 2-fold increase compared with that of the conventional Ni@AI2 O3 catalyst. In addition, the developed catalyst also exhibited comparatively high stability(for 12 h) and coke resistance ability. | Ammaru Ismaila Huanhao Chen Yan Shao Shaojun Xu Yilai Jiao Xueli Chen Xin Gao Xiaolei Fan | 2020 | Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering2020,28,9: | 4
Therapeutic efficacy and effects of artemisinin-based combination treatments on uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria-associated anaemia in Nigerian children during seven years of adoption as first-line treatments显示文摘Background:Artemisinin-based combination treatments(ACTs)are the first-line treatments of uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria in many endemic areas but there are few evaluation of their efficacy in anaemic malarious children. Methods:Therapeutic efficacy of 3-day regimens of artesunate-amodiaquine and artemether-lumefantrine was evaluated in 437 anaemic and 909 non-anaemic malarious children following treatment during a seven-year period(2008-2014).Patterns of temporal changes in haematocrit were classified based on haematocrit values<30%and≥30%.Kinetics of the disposition of the deficit in haematocrit from 30%following treatment were evaluated using a non-compartment model.Results:PCR-corrected parasitological efficacy 28 days after start of treatment was significantly higher in artesunateamodiaquine-compared to artemether-lumefantrine-treated children[97%(95%CI:92.8-100)versus 96.4%(95%CI:91.3-99.4),P=0.02],but it was similar in non-anaemic and anaemic children.Fall in haematocrit/1000 asexual parasites cleared from peripheral blood was significantly greater at lower compared to higher parasitaemias(P<0.0001),and in non-anaemic compared to anaemic children(P=0.007).In anaemic children at presentation, mean anaemia recovery time(AnRT)was 15.4 days(95%CI:13.3-17.4)and it did not change over the years.Declines in haematocrit deficits from 30%were monoexponential with mean estimated half-time of 1.4 days(95%CI:1.2-1.6).Anaemia half-time(t_(1/2anaemia))correlated positively with AnRT in the same patients(r=0.69,P<0.0001).Bland-Altman analysis of 10 multiples of t_(1/2anaemia) and AnRT showed narrow limit of agreement with insignificant bias(P=0.07)suggesting both can be used interchangeably in the same patients.Conclusions:Artesunate-amodiaquine and artemether-lumefantrine remain efficacious treatments of uncomplicated P.falciparum infections in non-anaemic and anaemic Nigerian children in the last 7 years of adoption as first-line treatments. These ACTs may also conserve haematocrit at high parasitaemias and in anaemic children.Trials registration:Pan African Clinical Trial Registry PACTR201508001188143,3 July 2015;PACTR201510001189370,3 July 2015;PACTR201508001191898,7 July 2015 and PACTR201508001193368,8 July 2015. | Akintunde Sowunmi Kazeem Akano Godwin Ntadom Adejumoke I.Ayede Folasade O.Ibironke Temitope Aderoyeje Elsie O.Adewoye Bayo Fatunmbi Stephen Oguche Henrietta U.Okafor Ismaila Watila Martin Meremikwu Philip Agomo William Ogala Chimere Agomo Onikepe A.Folarin Grace O.Gbotosho Christian T.Happi | 2017 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2017,6,1: | 2
Quantum-continuum simulation of underpotential deposition at electrified metal–solution interfaces显示文摘The underpotential deposition of transition metal ions is a critical step in many electrosynthetic approaches. While underpotential deposition has been intensively studied at the atomic level,first-principles calculations in vacuum can strongly underestimate the stability of underpotentially deposited metals. It has been shown recently that the consideration of co-adsorbed anions can deliver more reliable descriptions of underpotential deposition reactions;however, the influence of additional key environmental factors such as the electrification of the interface under applied voltage and the activities of the ions in solution have yet to be investigated. In this work, copper underpotential deposition on gold is studied under realistic electrochemical conditions using a quantum-continuum model of the electrochemical interface. We report here on the influence of surface electrification, concentration effects, and anion co-adsorption on the stability of the copper underpotential deposition layer on the gold(100)surface. | Stephen E.Weitzner Ismaila Dabo | 2017 | npj Computational Materials2017,,1: | 2
Geochemistry of the volcanic rocks from Bioko Island(“Cameroon Hot Line”): Evidence for plume-lithosphere interaction显示文摘Bioko Island(3008 m a.s.l) is located in the presently more active volcanic zone of the Cameroon Line and composed essentially of alkaline basalts and hawaiites, and lesser mugearites. The rocks show microlitic porphyritic texture with phenocrysts of olivine(83% < Fo < 87%) and clinopyroxene in a matrix of plagioclase, clinopyroxene and oxides. Hawaiites and mugearites also include phenocrysts of plagioclase(An62-67Ab35-32Or3-1). Major element variation diagrams show an increase in Si O2, Al2O3, Na2 O and K2 O with increasing Mg O for the studied rock groups. The rocks are characterized by low(86Sr/87Sr)i ratios(0.70320e0.70406), high 3Nd(t) values(2.56e4.33) and high(206Pb/204Pb)i ratios(20.032e20.035) values.Basalts are enriched in LILE and LREE, and have(Hf/Sm)N? 0.57e1.16. These geochemical signatures are similar to those of the Mount Cameroon rocks, and might be attributed to low degrees of partial melting from a garnet-amphibole-bearing mantle source. The trace elements and isotopic compositions suggest that the parental magma source might have involved HIMU- and EM1-components. | Fadimatou Ngounouno Yamgouot Bernard Déruelle Isaac Bertrand Gbambié Mbowou Ismaila Ngounouno Daniel Demaiffe | 2016 | Geoscience Frontiers2016,7,5: | 2
Fusarium wilt of banana:Current update and sustainable disease control using classical and essential oils approaches显示文摘Fusarium species were reported to produce biofilms.Biofilms are superficial societies of microbes bounded and endangered by being situated or taking place outside a cell or cells. The most destructive fungal diseases caused by phytopathogens are as a result of biofilms formation.Fusarium wilt of banana(Panama disease)is caused by a soil-borne pathogen called Fusarium oxysporum f.sp.cubense.Fusarium oxysporum occurs in a form of a species complex(FOSC)which encompasses a crowd of strains.Horizontal genetic factor transfer may donate to the observed assortment in pathogenic strains, while sexual reproduction is unknown in the FOSC.Fusarium wilt is a notorious disease on several crops worldwide.Yield loss caused by this pathogen is huge, and significant to destroy crop yields annually, thereby affecting the producer countries in various continents of the world. The disease is also resistant to various synthetic chemical fungicides. However, excessive use of synthetic fungicides during disease control could be lethal to humans, animals, and plants. This calls for alternative eco-friendly management of this disease by targeting the biofilms formation and finally suppressing this devastating phytopathogen. In this review,we,therefore, described the damage caused by Fusarium wilt disease, the concept of filamentous fungal biofilms, classical control strategies, sustainable disease control strategies using essential oils, and prevention and control of vegetables Fusarium wilt diseases. | Abubakar Abubakar Ismaila Khairulmazmi Ahmad Yasmeen Siddique Muhammad Aswad Abdul Wahab Abdulaziz Bashir Kutawa Adamu Abdullahi Syazwan Afif Mohd Zobir Arifin Abdu Siti Nor Akmar Abdullah | 2023 | Horticultural Plant Journal2023,9,1: | 2
Nanomaterial-based biosorbents:Adsorbent for efficient removal of selected organic pollutants from industrial wastewater显示文摘The contamination of the environment by organic pollutants is a major risk factor, particularly for developing countries.Selected organic pollutants(SOPs)like the phenolic compounds, polyaromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs),pesticides, and herbicides pose serious environmental and health issues owing to their toxic characteristics and poor degradability.Apart from their potential mutagenicity, carcinogenicity, tetragenicity and high body accumulation, these pollutants have become an increase concern worldwide.Biosorption is a promising alternative strategy for removing organic pollutants during water purification processes.Biosorbents have several advantages such as simplicity of operation, good sorption capacity, high recoverability and modifiability. As a result, the focus and novelty of this review is on recent trends in the use of biosorbents, with a particular emphasis on the removal of SOPs from wastewater. It also cover use of bacteria biosorbents, fungal, algae and chitosan/chitin biosorbents.Apart from that,we have also reviewed various classes of SOPs,their levels in the environment, classification and available characteristics techniques suitable for the adsorption experiments of these nanocomposites materials. In addition,we have provided comprehensive explanations and conclusions on possible future application of biosorbents and the mechanism of adsorption of these materials for removal of these SOPs from wastewater during water purification processes. | Hussein.K.Okoro Sadanand Pandey Clement O.Ogunkunle Catherine J.Ngila C.Zvinowanda Ismaila Jimoh Isiaka A.Lawal Muyiwa M.Orosun Adewale George Adeniyi | 2022 | Emerging Contaminants2022,8,1: | 2
