Grout diffusion characteristics during chemical grouting in a deep water-bearing sand layer显示文摘The deep, loose bottom aquifer of the eastern air shaft in the Xinglongzhuang Coal Mine was used to develop an experimental model of shaft grouting through Model deep soil.Lab experiments using chemical grouting were done to study the grout. The grouted soil shapes and osmotic pressure were measured during the experiments. The tested characteristics of the grouted soil show that the diffusion mode of grout in saturated sandy soil is a combination of split compaction and osmosis.More specifically, the shape of the grouted soil is determined by split compaction while the size of the grouted soil shape is determined by osmosis.Sensor test results indicate that the main reason for the non-uniform grout diffusion is the anisotropic osmotic pressure field surrounding the grouting holes.Ali Akbar Daya 2012International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2012,22,4:4
Phylogenetic diversity stabilizes community biomass显示文摘Aims The relationship between biodiversity and ecological stability is a long-standing issue in ecology.Current diversity–stability studies, which have largely focused on species diversity, often report an increase in the stability of aggregate community properties with increasing species diversity.Few studies have examined the linkage between phylogenetic diversity, another important dimension of biodiversity, and stability.By taking species evolutionary history into account, phylogenetic diversity may better capture the diversity of traits and niches of species in a community than species diversity and better relate to temporal stability. In this study,we investigated whether phylogenetic diversity could affect temporal stability of community biomass independent of species diversity. Methods We performed an experiment in laboratory microcosms with a pool of 12 bacterivorous ciliated protist species. To eliminate the possibility of species diversity effects confounding with phylogenetic diversity effects,we assembled communities that had the same number of species but varied in the level of phylogenetic diversity.Weekly disturbance,in the form of short-term temperature shock, was imposed on each microcosm and species abundances were monitored over time.We examined the relationship between temporal stability of community biomass and phylogenetic diversity and evaluated the role of several stabilizing mechanisms for explaining the influence of phylogenetic diversity on temporal stability.Important Findings Our results showed that increasing phylogenetic diversity promoted temporal stability of community biomass. Both total community biomass and summed variances showed a U-shaped relationship with phylogenetic diversity, driven by the presence of large, competitively superior species that attained large biomass and high temporal variation in their biomass in both low and high phylogenetic diversity communities.Communities without these species showed patterns consistent with the reduced strength of competition and increasingly asynchronous species responses to environmental changes under higher phylogenetic diversity, two mechanisms that can drive positive diversity–stability relationships. These results support the utility of species phylogenetic knowledge for predicting ecosystem functions and their stability.Zhichao Pu Poonim Daya Jiaqi Tan Lin Jiang 2014Journal of Plant Ecology2014,7,2:4
Cancer-associated adipocyte-derived G-CSF promotes breast cancer malignancy via Stat3 signaling显示文摘Adipocyte is the most predominant cell type in the tumor microenvironment of breast cancer and plays a pivotal role in cancer progression, yet the underlying mechanisms and functional mediators remain elusive. We isolated primary preadipocytes from mammary fat pads of human breast cancer patients and generated mature adipocytes and cancer-associated adipocytes(CAAs)in vitro. The CAAs exhibited significantly different gene expression profiles as assessed by transcriptome sequencing. One of the highly expressed genes in CAAs is granulocyte colony-stimulating factor(G-CSF).Treatment with recombinant human G-CSF protein or stable expression of human G-CSF in triple-negative breast cancer(TNBC)cell lines enhanced epithelial–mesenchymal transition, migration, and invasion of cancer cells,by activating Stat3.Accordantly,targeting G-CSF/Stat3 signaling with G-CSF-neutralizing antibody,a chemical inhibitor,or siRNAs for Stat3 could all abrogate CAA-or G-CSF-induced migration and invasion of breast cancer cells. The pro-invasive genes MMP2 and MMP9 were identified as target genes of G-CSF in TNBC cells.Furthermore,in human breast cancer tissues, elevated G-CSF expression in adipocytes is well correlated with activated Stat3 signal in cancer cells.Together, our results suggest a novel strategy to intervene with invasive breast cancers by targeting CAA-derived G-CSF.Li Liu Yudong Wu Cheng Zhang Chong Zhou Yining Li Yi Zeng Chunbo Zhang Rong Li Daya Luo Lieliang Wang Long Zhang Shuo Tu Huan Deng Shiwen Luo Ye-Guang Chen Xiangyang Xiong Xiaohua Yan 2020Journal of Molecular Cell Biology2020,12,9:4
Aspirin use for primary prophylaxis: Adverse outcomes in non-variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding显示文摘AIM: To compare outcomes of patients with nonvariceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding(NVUGIB) taking aspirin for primary prophylaxis to those not taking it.METHODS: Patients not known to have any vascular disease(coronary artery or cerebrovascular disease) who were admitted to the American University of Beirut Medical Center between 1993 and 2010 with NVUGIB were included. The frequencies of in-hospital mortality, re-bleeding, severe bleeding, need for surgery or embolization, and of a composite outcome defined as the occurrence of any of the 4 bleeding related adverse outcomes were compared between patients receiving aspirin and those on no antithrombotics. We also compared frequency of in hospital complications and length of hospital stay between the two groups.RESULTS: Of 357 eligible patients, 94 were on aspirin and 263 patients were on no antithrombotics(controlgroup). Patients in the aspirin group were older, the mean age was 58 years in controls and 67 years in the aspirin group(P < 0.001). Patients in the aspirin group had significantly more co-morbidities, including diabetes mellitus and hypertension [25(27%) vs 31(112%) and44(47%) vs 74(28%) respectively,(P = 0.001)], as well as dyslipidemia [21(22%) vs 16(6%), P < 0.0001).Smoking was more frequent in the aspirin group [34(41%) vs 60(27%), P = 0.02)]. The frequencies of endoscopic therapy and surgery were similar in both groups. Patients who were on aspirin had lower inhospital mortality rates(2.1% vs 13.7%, P = 0.002),shorter hospital stay(4.9 d vs 7 d, P = 0.01), and fewer composite outcomes(10.6% vs 24%, P = 0.01). The frequencies of in-hospital complications and re-bleeding were similar in the two groups.CONCLUSION: Patients who present with NVUGIB while receiving aspirin for primary prophylaxis had fewer adverse outcomes. Thus aspirin may have a protective effect beyond its cardiovascular benefits.Karina M Souk Hani M Tamim Hussein A Abu Daya Don C Rockey Kassem A Barada 2016World Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery2016,8,7:3

Utilising digital health to improve medication-related quality of care for hypertensive patients:An integrative literature review显示文摘BACKGROUND Hypertension or high blood pressure is considered as a significant contributor and risk factor to many serious conditions, approximately 1.13 billion people have hypertension globally. However, the integrated technologies can upscale health provisions and improve the effectiveness of the healthcare system.WHO has recommended that the digital health interventions(DHIs)and the Health System Challenges should be used in tandem in addressing health.AIM To summarise the outcomes from a range of research which investigated the use of DHI to improve the medication-related quality of care(MRQOC)for hypertensive patients.METHODS An integrative literature review was undertaken in October 2019 using the Medline,Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, and Scopus databases for publications in English with no date limit.RESULTS In total,18433 participants were included in this review from 28 studies meeting the eligibility criteria. There were 19 DHI identified within eight countries:Australia,Canada,India,South Korea,Lebanon,Pakistan, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. The DHI were provided as community-based,clinical-based and home-based program through mobile phone, mobile health system, short message service, and telehealth, digital medicine, and online healthcare(web-based).The mean age of participants was 59 ranging from 42 to 81 years with an average mean systolic blood pressure of 143.3 mmHg at baseline, ranging from 129.0 mmHg to 159.0 mmHg.The proportion of male participants ranged from 13.9%to 92.0%.Eighteen interventions showed evidence of reduction in blood pressure and improvement of self-management in relation to medication adherence and blood pressure control. The reduction of systolic blood pressure ranged between 1.9 mmHg and 26.0 mmHg,with a mean of 10.8 mmHg.The digital health was found positively associated with the MRQOC for hypertensive patients such as improvement in medication adherence and medication management;better blood pressure control;maintaining followups appointment and self-management;increasing access to healthcare particularly among patients living in rural area;and reducing adverse events. However, some interventions found no significant effect on hypertensive care. The follow up duration varied between 2 mo and 18 mo with an average attrition rate of 10.1%,ranging from 0.0%to 17.4%.CONCLUSION Utilising digital health innovation for hypertensive care in different settings with tailored interventions positively impacted on MRQOC leading to an improvement of patient outcomes and their quality of life.Nevertheless, inconclusive findings were found in some interventions, and inconsistent outcomes between DHI were noted.A future research and evidence-based DHI for hypertension or chronic diseases should be developed through the evidenceto-decision framework and guidelines.Kannikar Wechkunanukul Daya Ram Parajuli Mohammad Hamiduzzaman 2020World Journal of Clinical Cases2020,8,11:3

In vitro anti-hyaluronidase activity of Sri Lankan low grown orthodox orange pekoe grade black tea(Camellia sinensis L.)显示文摘Objective:To access the anti-hyaluronidase activity of Sri Lankan low grown orthodox orange pekoe(OP) grade black tea with a view to develop an anti-aging skin formulation. Methods:Five concentrations(0.125,0.250,0.500,1.000 and 2.000 mg/mL) of black tea brew(BTB) were made using a freeze dried sample of Sri Lankan low grown orthodox OP grade black tea which was prepared according to international organization for standardization specification.Epigallocatechin gallate(EGCG) was used as the reference agent(concentrations tested:0.012,0.025,0.050,0.100 and 0.200 mg/mL).Anti-hyaluronidase activity of BTB and EGCG in vitro were ascertained spectrometrically using hyaluronic acid(from rooster comb)and bovine testicular hyaluronidase. Results:The results revealed that BTB had moderate[IC_(50)=(1.09±0.12) mg/mL]and dose dependent(r^2=0.94) anti-hyaluronidase activity.EGCG also exhibited dose dependent(r^2=0.93,P<0.05) anti-hyaluronidase activity which was superior[IC_(50)=(0.09±0.00) mg/mL]to BTB.Conclusions:Sri Lankan low grown orthodox OP gradc black tca has promising antihyaluronidase activity in vitro and has the potential to be used as an anti-aging cosmaceutical. In addition,it may prove useful as a beverage in the management of allergy, some joint diseases and cnvenomation.Wanigasekera Daya Ratnasooriya Walimuni Prabhashini Kaushalya Mendis Abeysekera Chatura Tissa Dayendra Ratnasooriya 2014Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2014,4,12:2
Genetic and environmental control of fruit maturation, dry matter and firmness in apple(Malus×domestica Borkh.)显示文摘For any given genotype, the environment in which an apple is grown can influence the properties of the fruit considerably. While there has been extensive research on the mechanism of the genetic control of fruit quality traits, less effort has been made to investigate the way that these genetic mechanisms interact with the environment. To address this issue,we employed a large‘Royal Gala’בBraeburn’population of 572 seedlings replicated over sites in three climatically diverse apple-growing regions in New Zealand.Phenotyping for traits including fruit maturation timing, firmness and dry matter content was performed at each of these three sites for a single growing season(2011),and at two sites(Motueka and Hawke’s Bay)for two seasons(2009 and 2010).The phenotype data collected over 2 years at two sites enabled the detection of 190 quantitative trait loci(QTL)that controlled these traits regardless of year or growing location,as well as some chromosomal loci that influenced the traits in a single given environment or year. For those loci that were environmentally stable over three sites, there was an interdependency of fruit maturation date, dry matter content and storage potential within this population, with two regions on Linkage Groups(LGs)10 and 16 strongly contributing. If these loci were used in a marker-assisted selection programme to select for progeny bearing firmer fruit, this would have the unintentional consequence of selecting, high dry matter content, later maturing apples. In addition,a further 113 new QTLs with a smaller effect were identified, some of which were exhibited only in a single growing environment, demonstrating the underlying complexity of control of traits determining fruit quality,in addition to the need for being aware of environmental effects when developing new apple varieties.David Chagne Daya Dayatilake Robert Diack Murray Oliver Hilary Ireland Amy Watson Susan E Gardiner Jason W Johnston Robert J Schaffer Stuart Tustin 2014Horticulture Research2014,1,1:2
