3Switchgrass Biochar Effects on Plant Biomass and Microbial Dynamics in Two Soils from Different Regions显示文摘Biochar amendments to soils may alter soil function and fertility in various ways, including through induced changes in the microbial community. We assessed microbial activity and community composition of two distinct clayey soil types, an Aridisol from Colorado(CO) in the U.S. Central Great Plains, and an Alfisol from Virginia(VA) in the southeastern USA following the application of switchgrass(Panicum virgatum) biochar. The switchgrass biochar was applied at four levels, 0%, 2.5%, 5%, and 10%, approximately equivalent to biochar additions of 0, 25, 50, and 100 t ha-1, respectively, to the soils grown with wheat(Triticum aestivum) in an eight-week growth chamber experiment. We measured wheat shoot biomass and nitrogen(N) content and soil nutrient availability and N mineralization rates, and characterized the microbial fatty acid methyl ester(FAME) profiles of the soils. Net N mineralization rates decreased in both soils in proportion to an increase in biochar levels, but the effect was more marked in the VA soil, where net N mineralization decreased from-2.1 to-38.4 mg kg-1. The 10% biochar addition increased soil p H, electrical conductivity, Mehlichand bicarbonate-extractable phosphorus(P), and extractable potassium(K) in both soil types. The wheat shoot biomass decreased from 17.7 to 9.1 g with incremental additions of biochar in the CO soil, but no difference was noted in plants grown in the VA soil. The FAME recovery assay indicated that the switchgrass biochar addition could introduce artifacts in analysis, so the results needed to be interpreted with caution. Non-corrected total FAME concentrations indicated a decline by 45% and 34% with 10% biochar addition in the CO and VA soils, respectively, though these differences became nonsignificant when the extraction efficiency correction factor was applied. A significant decline in the fungi:bacteria ratio was still evident upon correction in the CO soil with biochar. 4手足口病急诊留观患儿转归的相关因素分析显示文摘目的探讨儿科手足口病患儿的临床特点及急诊留观患儿转归的危险因素,为手足口病患儿的护理提供依据。方法对2012年8月至2013年3月儿科急诊留观室收治的471例手足口病患儿及同期住院的40例患儿一般资料、临床症状及实验室检查结果进行比较,分析急诊留观患儿转归的危险因素。结果 3岁以下、高热、肢体抖动、血糖大于7.0 mmol/L、白细胞增高的手足口病患儿作为独立的危险因素使患儿转入住院的机会增多(P<0.01或P<0.05)。结论关注高危急诊留观患儿,有助于及时发现手足口病患儿的病情变化,提高其治愈率。存在病情加重危险的患儿,必要时住院进一步治疗。张丽月 Denise Kudirka Colleen Church 肖玉娟 吴闯 孙玉贝 林刚曦 2014护理管理杂志2014,14,4:7

6Role of functional imaging in the development and refinement of invasive neuromodulation for psychiatric disorders显示文摘Deep brain stimulation(DBS) is emerging as a pow-erful tool for the alleviation of targeted symptoms in treatment-resistant neuropsychiatric disorders. Despite the expanding use of neuropsychiatric DBS, the mecha-nisms responsible for its effects are only starting to be elucidated. Several modalities such as quantitative elec-troencephalography as well a intraoperative recordings have been utilized to attempt to understand the under-pinnings of this new treatment modality, but functional imaging appears to offer several unique advantages. Functional imaging techniques like positron emission tomography, single photon emission computed tomog-raphy and functional magnetic resonance imaging have been used to examine the effects of focal DBS on activ-ity in a distributed neural network. These investigations are critical for advancing the field of invasive neuro-modulation in a safe and effective manner, particularly in terms of defining the neuroanatomical targets and refining the stimulation protocols. The purpose of this review is to summarize the current functional neuroim-aging findings from neuropsychiatric DBS implantation for three disorders: treatment-resistant depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and Tourette syndrome. All of the major targets will be discussed(Nucleus ac-cumbens, anterior limb of internal capsule, subcallosal cingulate, Subthalamic nucleus, Centromedial nucleus of the thalamus-Parafasicular complex, frontal pole, and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex). 7Depression following a traumatic brain injury:uncovering cytokine dysregulation as a pathogenic mechanism显示文摘A substantial number of individuals have long-lasting adverse effects from a traumatic brain injury(TBI). Depression is one of these long-term complications that influences many aspects of life. Depression can limit the ability to return to work, and even worsen cognitive function and contribute to dementia. The mechanistic cause for the increased depression risk associated with a TBI remains to be defined. As TBI results in chronic neuroinflammation, and priming of glia to a secondary challenge, the inflammatory theory of depression provides a promising framework for investigating the cause of depression following a TBI. Increases in cytokines similar to those seen in depression in the general population are also increased following a TBI. Biomarker levels of cytokines peak within hours-to-days after the injury, yet pro-inflammatory cytokines may still be elevated above physiological levels months-to-years following TBI, which is the time frame in which post-TBI depression can persist. As tumor necrosis factor α and interleukin 1 can signal directly at the neuronal synapse, pathophysiological levels of these cytokines can detrimentally alter neuronal synaptic physiology. The purpose of this review is to outline the current evidence for the inflammatory hypothesis of depression specifically as it relates to depression following a TBI. Moreover, we will illustrate the potential synaptic mechanisms by which tumor necrosis factor α and interleukin 1 could contribute to depression. The association of inflammation with the development of depression is compelling; however, in the context of post-TBI depression, the role of inflammation is understudied. 11Incorporation of Biochar Carbon into Stable Soil Aggregates:The Role of Clay Mineralogy and Other Soil Characteristics显示文摘Aggregation and structure play key roles in water-holding capacity and stability of soils.In this study,the incorporation of carbon(C) from switchgrass biochar into stable aggregate size fractions was assessed in an Aridisol(from Colorado,USA) dominated by 2:1 clays and an Alfisol(from Virginia,USA) containing weathered mixed 1:1 and 2:1 mineralogy,to evaluate the effect of biochar addition on soil characteristics.The biochar was applied at 4 levels,0,25,50,and 100 g kg^(-1),to the soils grown with wheat in a growth chamber experiment.The changes in soil strength and water-holding capacity using water release curves were measured.In the Colorado soil,the proportion of soil occurring in large aggregates decreased,with concomitant increases in small size fractions.No changes in aggregate size fractions occurred in the Virginia soil.In the Colorado soil,C content increased from 3.3 to 16.8 g kg^(-1),whereas in the<53 μm fraction C content increased from 5.7 to 22.6 g kg^(-1) with 100 g kg^(-1)biochar addition.In the Virginia soil,C content within aggregate size fractions increased for each size fraction,except the>2 000 μm fraction.The greatest increase(from 6.2 to 22.0 g kg^(-1)) occurred in the 53–250 μm fraction.The results indicated that C was incorporated into larger aggregates in the Virginia soil,but remained largely unassociated to soil particles in the Colorado soil.Biochar addition had no significant effect on water-holding capacity or strength measurements.Adding biochar to more weathered soils with high native soil organic content may result in greater stabilization of incorporated C and result in less loss because of erosion and transport,compared with the soils dominated by 2:1 clays and low native soil organic content.Charlene N. 16Assessing cultural competency skills in gastroenterology fellowship training显示文摘AIM:To assess and teach cultural competency skills at the fellowship training level through the use of objective structured clinical examinations(OSCEs).METHODS:We revised four scenarios to infuse a specific focus on cross-cultural care,and to render them appropriate for gastroenterology fellows.Three are discussed here:(1)Poor Health Literacy;(2)Disclosing/Apologizing for a Complication to a Patient Who Mistrusts the Healthcare System;and(3)Breaking Bad News to a Fatalistic Patient.A fourth case emphasizing shared decision-making will be described elsewhere.Four stations were completed by fellows and observed live by four faculty members,and the fellows’performance was assessed.RESULTS:Eleven fellows from four programs participated in the four OSCE.In the'Poor Health Literacy'case,18%(2/11)of participants recognized that the standardized patient(SP)had below-basic health literacy.None successfully evaluated the SP’s reading skills in a culturally-sensitive manner.In'Disclosing/Apologizing for a Complication',4/11(36%)personally apologized for the complication.1/11 recognized the SP’s mistrust of the medical system.With'Breaking Bad News',27%(3/11)explored the patient’s values to identify her fatalistic beliefs.CONCLUSION:OSCEs can be used to assess deficiencies in culturally-competent care at the fellowship level.OSCEs also afford fellowships the opportunity to inform future training curricula.Sophie Balzora Benjamin Abiri Xiao-Jing Wang James Mc Keever Michael Poles Sondra Zabar Colleen Gillespie Elizabeth Weinshel 2015World Journal of Gastroenterology2015,21,6:2
