1Factors associated with incomplete small bowel capsule endoscopy studies显示文摘AIM:To identify patient risk factors associated with incomplete small bowel capsule endoscopy(CE) studies.METHODS:Data from all CE procedures performed at St.Paul's Hospital in Vancouver,British Columbia,Canada,between December 2001 and June 2008 were collected and analyzed on a retrospective basis.Data collection for complete and incomplete CE study groups included patient demographics as well as a number of potential risk factors for incomplete CE including indication for the procedure,hospitalization,diabetes mellitus with or without end organ damage,limitations in mobility,renal insufficiency,past history of bowel obstruction,abdominal surgery,abdominal radiation therapy and opiate use.Risk factors were analyzed using a univariable and multivariable logistic regression model.RESULTS:From a total of 535 CE procedures performed,158 were incomplete(29.5%).The univariable analysis showed that CE procedures performed for overt gastrointestinal bleeding(P = 0.002),and for patients with a prior history of abdominal surgery(P = 0.023) or bowel obstruction(P = 0.023) were significantly associated with incomplete CE studies.Patients on opiate medications(P = 0.094) as well as hospitalized patients(P = 0.054) were not statistically significant,but did show a trend towards incomplete CE.The multivariable analysis showed that independent risk factors for an incomplete CE procedure include prior history of bowel obstruction [odds ratios(OR) 2.77,P = 0.02,95% confidence intervals(CI):1.17-6.56] and procedures performed for gastrointestinal bleeding(Occult OR 2.04,P = 0.037,95% CI:1.04-4.02 and Overt OR 2.69,P = 0.002,95% CI:1.44-5.05).Patients with a prior history of abdominal surgery(OR 1.46,P = 0.068,95% CI:0.97-2.19),those taking opiate medications(OR 1.54,P = 0.15,95% CI:0.86-2.76) and hospitalized patients(OR 1.82,P = 0.124,95% CI:0.85-3.93) showed a trend towards statistical significance.CONCLUSION:We have identified a number of risk factors for incomplete CE procedures that can be used to risk-stratify patients and guide interventions to improve completion rates.Mitchell M Lee Andrew Jacques Eric Lam Ricky Kwok Pardis Lakzadeh Ajit Sandhar Brandon Segal Sigrid Svarta Joanna Law Robert Enns 2010World Journal of Gastroenterology2010,16,42:10

3Therapeutic potential of curcumin in gastrointestinal diseases显示文摘Curcumin,also known as diferuloylmethane,is derived from the plant Curcuma longa and is the active ingredient of the spice turmeric.The therapeutic activities of curcumin for a wide variety of diseases such as diabetes,allergies,arthritis and other chronic and inflammatory diseases have been known for a long time.More recently,curcumin's therapeutic potential for preventing and treating various cancers is being recognized.As curcumin's therapeutic promise is being explored more systematically in various diseases,it has become clear that,due to its increased bioavailability in the gastrointestinal tract,curcumin may be particularly suited to be developed to treat gastrointestinal diseases.This review summarizes some of the current literature of curcumin's anti-inflammatory,anti-oxidant and anti-cancer potential in inflammatory bowel diseases,hepaticfibrosis and gastrointestinal cancers.Sigrid A Rajasekaran 2011World Journal of Gastrointestinal Pathophysiology2011,2,1:8
4Ultrasound enhanced friction stir welding of aluminum and steel: Process and properties of EN AW 6061/DC04-Joints显示文摘In this work, the joining of aluminum to steel was conducted by ultrasound enhanced friction stir welding(USE-FSW). The power ultrasound was introduced into one of the metal sheets by an ultrasonic roll seam module synchronously to the FSW-process. The effect of the ultrasound on the resulting welds, their microstructure and their corrosion properties was investigated by light and scanning electron microscopy and corrosion investigations. The USE-FSW-joints showed less and smaller steel particles in the nugget zone as well as a thinner continuous intermetallic phase of FeAl_3 at the interface. The nondestructive testing method of computed laminography proved the observations made by optic microscopy due to non-porous joints for both techniques. 7Strictures, diaphragms, erosions or ulcerations of ischemic type in the colon should always prompt consideration of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug-induced lesions显示文摘AIM: To investigate whether NSAIDs/ASA lesions in the colon can histologically be diagnosed on the basis of ischemic necrosis similar to biopsy-based diagnosis of NSAIDs/ASA-induced erosions and ulcers of the stomach.METHODS: In the period between 1997 and 2002, we investigated biopsy materials obtained from 611 patients (415 women, 196 men, average age 60.5 years) with endoscopic focal erosions, ulcerations, strictures or diaphragms in the colon. In the biopsies obtained from these lesions, we always established the suspected diagnosis of NSAID-induced lesions whenever necroses of the ischemic type were found. Together with the histological report, we endosed a questionnaire to investigate the use of medication.The data provided by the questionnaire were then correlated with the endoscopic findings, the location, number and nature of the lesions, and the histological findings.RESULTS: At the time of their colonoscopy, 86.1% of the patients had indeed been taking NSAID/ASA medication for years (43.9%) or months (29.5%). The most common indication for the use of these drugs was pain (64.3%),and the most common indication for colonoscopy was bleeding (55.5%). Endoscopic inspection revealed multiple erosions and/or ulcers in 60.6%, strictures in 15.8%, and diaphragms in 3.0% of the patients. The lesions were located mainly in the right colon including the transverse colon (79.9%). A separate analysis of age and sex distribution,endoscopic and histological findings for NSAIDs alone,ASA alone, combined NSAID/ASA, and for patients denying the use of such drugs, revealed no significant differences among the groups.CONCLUSION: This uncontrolled retrospective study based on the histological finding of an ischemic necrosis shows that the histologically suspected diagnosis of NSAID-induced lesions in the colon is often correct. 10Transition from a maternal to external nitrogen source in maize seedlings显示文摘Maximizing NO_3^- uptake during seedling development is important as it has a major influence on plant growth and yield.However,little is known about the processes leading to,and involved in,the initiation of root NO_3^- uptake capacity in developing seedlings.This study examines the physiological processes involved in root NO_3^- uptake and metabolism,to gain an understanding of how the NO_3^- uptake system responds to meet demand as maize seedlings transition from seed N use to external N capture.The concentrations of seedderived free amino acids within root and shoot tissues are initially high,but decrease rapidly until stabilizing eight days after imbibition(DAI).Similarly,shoot N% decreases,but does not stabilize until 12–13 DAI.Following the decrease in free amino acid concentrations,root NO_3^- uptake capacity increases until shoot N%stabilizes.The increase in root NO_3^- uptake capacity corresponds with a rapid rise in transcript levels of putative NO_3^- transporters,Zm NRT2.1 and Zm NRT2.2.The processes underlying the increase in root NO_3^- uptake capacity to meet N demand provide an insight into the processes controlling N uptake.Kasra Sabermanesh Luke R. 12Genetic diversity for mycorrhizal symbiosis and phosphate transporters in rice显示文摘Phosphorus(P) is a major plant nutrient and developing crops with higher P-use efficiency is an important breeding goal.In this context we have conducted a comparative study of irrigated and rainfed rice varieties to assess genotypic differences in colonization with arbuscular mycorrhizal(AM) fungi and expression of different P transporter genes.Plants were grown in three different soil samples from a rice farm in the Philippines.The data show that AM symbiosis in all varieties was established after 4 weeks of growth under aerobic conditions and that,in soil derived from a rice paddy,natural AM populations recovered within6 weeks.The analysis of AM marker genes(AM1,AM3,AM14) and P transporter genes for the direct Pi uptake(PT2,PT6) and AM-mediated pathway(PT11,PT13) were largely in agreement with the observed root AM colonization providing a useful tool for diversity studies.Interestingly,delayed AM colonization was observed in the aus-type rice varieties which might be due to their different root structure and might confer an advantage for weed competition in the field.The data further showed that P-starvation induced root growth and expression of the high-affinity P transporter PT6 was highest in the irrigated variety IR66 which also maintained grain yield under P-deficient field conditions.Kwanho Jeong Nicolas Mattes Sheryl Catausan Joong Hyoun Chin Uta Paszkowski Sigrid Heuer 2015Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2015,57,11:2
13Waixenicin A,a marine-derived TRPM7 inhibitor:a promising CNS drug lead显示文摘Ion channels are the third largest class of targets for therapeutic drugs.The pharmacology of ion channels is an important research area for identifying new treatment options for human diseases.The past decade or so has seen increasing interest in an ion channel protein belonging to the transient receptor potential(TRP)family,namely the melastatin subfamily member 7(TRPM7),as an emerging drug target.TRPM7 is a bifunctional protein with a magnesium and calcium-conducting divalent ion channel fused with an active kinase domain.TRPM7 is ubiquitously expressed in human tissues,including the brain,and regulates various cell biology processes such as magnesium and calcium homeostasis,cell growth and proliferation,and embryonic development.TRPM7 provides a link between cellular metabolic status and intracellular calcium homeostasis in neurons due to TRPM7’s unique sensitivity to fluctuating intracellular Mg·ATP levels.Thus,the protein plays a key role in ischemic and hypoxic neuronal cell death and brain injury,and is one of the key nonglutamate mechanisms in cerebral ischemia and stroke.Currently,the most potent and specific TRPM7 inhibitor is waixenicin A,a xenicane diterpenoid from the Hawaiian soft coral Sarcothelia edmondsoni.Using waixenicin A as a pharmacological tool,we demonstrated that TRPM7 is involved in promoting neurite outgrowth in vitro.Most recently,we found that waixenicin A reduced hypoxic-ischemic brain injury and preserved long-term behavioral outcomes in mouse neonates.We here suggest that TRPM7 is an emerging drug target for CNS diseases and disorders,and waixenicin A is a viable drug lead for these disorders.Hong-Shuo Sun F.David Horgen Daniel Romo Kenneth G.Hull Sigrid A.Kiledal Andrea Fleig Zhong-Ping Feng 2020Acta Pharmacologica Sinica2020,41,12:2
