| 2 | Inverse-designed spinodoid metamaterials显示文摘After a decade of periodic truss-,plate-,and shell-based architectures having dominated the design of metamaterials,we introduce the non-periodic class of spinodoid topologies.Inspired by natural self-assembly processes,spinodoid metamaterials are a close approximation of microstructures observed during spinodal phase separation.Their theoretical parametrization is so intriguingly simple that one can bypass costly phase-field simulations and obtain a rich and seamlessly tunable property space.Counterintuitively,breaking with the periodicity of classical metamaterials is the enabling factor to the large property space and the ability to introduce seamless functional grading.We introduce an efficient and robust machine learning technique for the inverse design of(meta-)materials which,when applied to spinodoid topologies,enables us to generate uniform and functionally graded cellular mechanical metamaterials with tailored direction-dependent(anisotropic)stiffness and density.We specifically present biomimetic artificial bone architectures that not only reproduce the properties of trabecular bone accurately but also even geometrically resemble natural bone. | Siddhant Kumar Stephanie Tan Li Zheng Dennis M.Kochmann | 2020 | npj Computational Materials2020,,1: | 1 |

| 4 | Endoscopic sinus surgery and aspirin desensitization improve otologic-specific SNOT-22 scores显示文摘Objective:There are few studies evaluating the impact of Aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease(AERD)treatment on otologic symptoms.The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of endoscopic sinus surgery(ESS)and aspirin desensitization(AD)on otologic symptoms in subjects with AERD.Methods:Retrospective chart review of adult patients diagnosed with AERD at our tertiary Care Academic Medical Center-Otorhinolaryngology Department.Charts of adult patients diagnosed with AERD who underwent ESS and ASA desensitization at our institution’s AERD Center from 2016 to 2019 were reviewed.Sino-Nasal Outcomes Test 22-item survey(SNOT-22)scores were evaluated for patients at various time points including:pre-surgery,post-surgery/pre-aspirin desensitization,and various times post-desensitization up to>12 months.Within the SNOT-22,otologic-specific subdomain scores were evaluated at similar time points.Patients on immunomodulatory medications other than corticosteroids were excluded from analysis.Results:SNOT-22 scores were analyzed for 121 patients.There was a significant improvement in overall SNOT scores from pre-surgery(44.62)to post surgery/pre-desensitization(23.34)(P<0.0005).Similarly,SNOT-22 otologic-specific scores also improved after surgery prior to desensitization(3.19-2.04)(P=0.005).Following AD,the improvement in the overall SNOT-22 continued to improve for up to 12 months(P<0.005).While the otologic-specific SNOT-22 scores remained stable after surgery and ASA desensitization.Conclusion:ESS and AD reduce otologic-specific SNOT-22 scores and parallel trends in overall SNOT-22 scores.The effect of treatment is durable over the course of 12 months.Future work should aim to correlate otologic SNOT-22 scores with objective otologic data. | James G.Naples Andrew Corr Siddhant Tripathi Morgan Berman Jason A.Brant Michael J.Ruckenstein John Bosso | 2020 | World Journal of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery2020,6,4: | 1 |

| 7 | Discovering plasticity models without stress data显示文摘We propose an approach for data-driven automated discovery of material laws,which we call EUCLID(Efficient Unsupervised Constitutive Law Identification and Discovery),and we apply it here to the discovery of plasticity models,including arbitrarily shaped yield surfaces and isotropic and/or kinematic hardening laws.The approach is unsupervised,i.e.,it requires no stress data but only full-field displacement and global force data;it delivers interpretable models,i.e.,models that are embodied by parsimonious mathematical expressions discovered through sparse regression of a potentially large catalog of candidate functions;it is one-shot,i.e.,discovery only needs one experiment.The material model library is constructed by expanding the yield function with a Fourier series,whereas isotropic and kinematic hardening is introduced by assuming a yield function dependency on internal history variables that evolve with the plastic deformation.For selecting the most relevant Fourier modes and identifying the hardening behavior,EUCLID employs physics knowledge,i.e.,the optimization problem that governs the discovery enforces the equilibrium constraints in the bulk and at the loaded boundary of the domain.Sparsity promoting regularization is deployed to generate a set of solutions out of which a solution with low cost and high parsimony is automatically selected.Through virtual experiments,we demonstrate the ability of EUCLID to accurately discover several plastic yield surfaces and hardening mechanisms of different complexity. | Moritz Flaschel Siddhant Kumar Laura De Lorenzis | 2022 | npj Computational Materials2022,,1: | 0 |
| 8 | Performance evaluation of deep neural networks for forecasting time-series with multiple structural breaks and high volatility显示文摘The problem of automatic and accurate forecasting of time-series data has always been an interesting challenge for the machine learning and forecasting community.A majority of the real-world time-series problems have non-stationary characteristics that make the understanding of trend and seasonality difficult.The applicability of the popular deep neural networks(DNNs)as function approximators for non-stationary TSF is studied.The following DNN models are evaluated:Multi-layer Perceptron(MLP),Convolutional Neural Network(CNN),and RNN with Long Short-Term Memory(LSTM-RNN)and RNN with Gated-Recurrent Unit(GRU-RNN).These DNN methods have been evaluated over 10 popular Indian financial stocks data.Further,the performance evaluation of these DNNs has been carried out in multiple independent runs for two settings of forecasting:(1)single-step forecasting,and(2)multi-step forecasting.These DNN methods show convincing performance for single-step forecasting(one-day ahead forecast).For the multi-step forecasting(multiple days ahead forecast),the methods for different forecast periods are evaluated.The performance of these methods demonstrates that long forecast periods have an adverse effect on performance. | Rohit Kaushik Shikhar Jain Siddhant Jain Tirtharaj Dash | 2021 | CAAI Transactions on Intelligence Technology2021,6,3: | 0 |
| 9 | Postoperative mometasone irrigations improve quality of life in skull base tumor patients显示文摘Objectives:The use of topical corticosteroids to manage postoperative sinonasal symptoms after endoscopic skull base surgery (ESBS) has not been well studied.We quantified long‐term impact of postoperative steroid irrigations (SIs) on quality of life of patients after ESBS.Methods:Retrospective review of patients at the University of Pennsylvania undergoing ESBS from 2010 to 2019.Data on patient demographics and postoperative treatment with nasal saline irrigation twice daily with and without dissolved steroids (mometasone or budesonide) was collected.Preoperative,and 1‐,3‐,6‐,12‐,18‐,and 24‐month postoperative Sino‐Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT‐22) scores were assessed.Results:A total of 727 patients were assessed (53.4% males),with 479 patients in the no SI group and 248 patients in the SI group.Preoperative SNOT‐22 scores did not differ significantly (P = 0.19).1‐,3‐,6‐,12‐,18‐,and 24‐month post‐op SNOT‐22 scores did not significantly differ between groups.However,mometasone irrigations resulted in significantly lower postoperative 2‐year SNOT‐22 scores compared to budesonide (P < 0.01) and saline (P = 0.03).Conclusions:Though corticosteroid irrigations are routine in managing inflammatory sinus disease,their role in postoperative management after ESBS for tumors is unclear.Our findings suggest that mometasone irrigation may be effective at improving postoperative quality of life in patients after ESBS. | Mandy K.Salmon Rijul S.Kshirsagar Jacob G.Eide Auddie M.Sweis Kathleen Davin Aman Prasad Heather Ungerer Elizabeth Stevens Kevin Ig‐Izevbekhai Siddhant Tripathi Tran B.Locke Theodore Lin Brian M.Sweis Michael A.Kohanski Nithin D.Adappa James N.Palmer | 2023 | World Journal of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery2023,9,4: | 0 |

After China, Italybecame the next epicentre of the virus and witnessed a very high death toll.Soon nations like the USA became severely hit by SARS-CoV-2 virus. TheWorld Health Organisation, on 11th March 2020, declared COVID-19 a pandemic. To combat the epidemic, the nations from every corner of the worldhas instituted various policies like physical distancing, isolation of infectedpopulation and researching on the potential vaccine of SARS-CoV-2. Toidentify the impact of various policies implemented by the affected countrieson the pandemic spread, a myriad of AI-based models have been presented toanalyse and predict the epidemiological trends of COVID-19. In this work, theauthors present a detailed study of different articial intelligence frameworksapplied for predictive analysis of COVID-19 patient record. The forecastingmodels acquire information from records to detect the pandemic spreadingand thus enabling an opportunity to take immediate actions to reduce thespread of the virus. This paper addresses the research issues and correspondingsolutions associated with the prediction and detection of infectious diseaseslike COVID-19. It further focuses on the study of vaccinations to cope withthe pandemic.
