Acupuncture's Role in Solving the Opioid Epidemic: Evidence, Cost-Effectiveness, and Care Availability for Acupuncture as a Primary, Non-Pharmacologic Method for Pain Relief and Management-White Paper 2017显示文摘The United States(U.S.) is facing a national opioid epidemic, and medical systems are in need of nonpharmacologic strategies that can be employed to decrease the public's opioid dependence. Acupuncture has emerged as a powerful, evidence-based, safe, cost-effective, and available treatment modality suitable to meeting this need. Acupuncture has been shown to be effective for the management of numerous types of pain conditions, and mechanisms of action for acupuncture have been described and are understandable from biomedical, physiologic perspectives. Further, acupuncture's cost-effectiveness can dramatically decrease health care expenditures, both from the standpoint of treating acute pain and through avoiding addiction to opioids that requires costly care, destroys quality of life, and can lead to fatal overdose. Numerous federal regulatory agencies have advised or mandated that healthcare systems and providers offer non-pharmacologic treatment options for pain. Acupuncture stands out as the most evidence-based, immediately available choice to fulfil these calls. Acupuncture can safely, easily, and cost-effectively be incorporated into hospital settings as diverse as the emergency department, labor and delivery suites, andneonatal intensive care units to treat a variety of commonly seen pain conditions. Acupuncture is already being successful y and meaningfully utilized by the Veterans Administration and various branches of the U.S. Military, in some studies demonstrably decreasing the volume of opioids prescribed when included in care. | arthur yin fan david w.miller bonnie bolash matthew bauer john mcdonald sarah faggert hongjian he yong ming li amy matecki lindy camardella mel hopper koppelman jennifer a.m.stone lindsay meade john pang | 2017 | Journal of Integrative Medicine2017,15,6: | 29
Uplift, climate and biotic changes at the Eocene-Oligocene transition in south-eastern Tibet显示文摘The uplift history of south-eastern Tibet is crucial to understanding processes driving the tectonic evolution of the Tibetan Plateau and surrounding areas.Underpinning existing palaeoaltimetric studies has been regional mapping based in large part on biostratigraphy that assumes a Neogene modernization of the highly diverse, but threatened,Asian biota. Here, with new radiometric dating and newly collected plant-fossil archives,we quantify the surface height of part of the south-eastern margin of Tibet in the latest Eocene(~34 Ma)to be^3 km and rising, possibly attaining its present elevation(3.9 km)in the early Oligocene. We also find that the Eocene–Oligocene transition in south-eastern Tibet witnessed leaf-size diminution and a floral composition change from sub-tropical/warm temperate to cool temperate, likely reflective of both uplift and secular climate change, and that,by the latest Eocene, floral modernization on Tibet had already taken place, implying modernization was deeply rooted in the Palaeogene. | Tao Su Robert A. | 3 | Discussions on real-world acupuncture treatments for chroni clow-back pain in older adults显示文摘Chronic low-back pain(CLBP) is one of the most common pain conditions. Current clinical guidelines for low-back pain recommend acupuncture for CLBP. However, there are very few high-quality acupuncture studies on CLBP in older adults. Clinical acupuncture experts in the American Traditional Chinese Medicine Association(ATCMA) were interested in the recent grant on CLBP research announced by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. The ATCMA experts held an online discussion on the subject of real-world acupuncture treatments for CLBP in older adults. Seven participants, each with more than 20 years of acupuncture practice, discussed their own unique clinical experience while another participant talked about the potential mechanism of acupuncture in pain management. As a result of the discussion, a picture of a similar treatment strategy emerged across the participants for CLBP in older adults. This discussion shows that acupuncture may have complicated mechanisms in pain management, yet it is effective for the treatment of chronic pain involving maladaptive neuroplasticity;therefore, it should be effective for CLBP in older adults. | Arthur Yin Fan Hui Ouyang Xinru Qian Hui Wei David Dehui Wang Deguang He Haihe Tian Changzhen Gong Amy Matecki Sarah Faggert Alemi | 2019 | Journal of Integrative Medicine2019,17,2: | 5

25-Hydroxycholesterol is a potent SARS-CoV-2 inhibitor显示文摘Dear Editor,As of July,2020,the ongoing pandemic of coronavirus diseases 2019(COVID-19)caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2,previously 2019-nCoV)has caused more than 10.3 million human infections, with more than 506,000 deaths worldwide according to the World Health Organization. The clinical manifestations of COVID-19 vary from no asymptomatic infection,mild“flu-like”symptoms,to lethal acute respiratory distress syndrome. The case mortality and fatality rates in people infected with SARS-CoV-2 increase steeply with age,and fatal outcomes are almost exclusively seen in people older than 50 years.1 Although the Food and Drug Administration has authorized emergency use of remdesivir for COVID-19 treatment in the US,the need for safe and effective antiviral drugs against SARS-CoV-2 remains urgent and unmet. | Shulong Zu Yong-Qiang Deng Chao Zhou Jie Li Lili Li Qi Chen Xiao-Feng Li Hui Zhao Sarah Gold Jun He Xiang Li Changqing Zhang Heng Yang Genhong Cheng Cheng-Feng Qin | 2020 | Cell Research2020,30,11: | 3
Prevalence of and risk factors for tuberculosis among healthcare workers in Chinese tuberculosis facilities显示文摘Background:China is one of 22 countries with a high tuberculosis(TB)burden in the world.Healthcare workers(HCWs)have a high risk of contracting Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection due to insufficient infection control practices. We conducted a cross-sectional study to explore the prevalence of TB and its associated risk factors among HCWs in Chinese TB facilities. Methods:Two hundred and forty-one TB facilities employing a total of 9663 HCWs were selected from 12 provinces in China to represent healthcare settings at the provincial, prefectural, and county levels.Structured questionnaires were used to collect information on TB infection control practices and HCWs in those facilities.Data was double entered into EpiData 3.1;TB prevalence and associated risk factors were analyzed using SPSS 21.0 with bivariate and multivariate regression models. Results:The results showed that 71 HCWs had been diagnosed with TB,accounting for a prevalence of 760/100000.The multivariate analysis showed that associated risk factors included belonging to the age group of 51 years and above(aOR:6.17,95%CI:1.35-28.28),being a nurse(aOR=3.09,95%CI:1.15-8.32),implementation of 0-9 items of management measures(aOR=2.57,95%CI:1.37-4.80),and implementation of 0-1 items of ventilation measures(aOR=2.42,95%CI:1.31-4.47).Conclusion:This was the first national large sampling survey on TB prevalence among HCWs in China. It was found that the implementation of TB infection control practices in some facilities was poor. The TB prevalence in HCWs was higher than that in the general population. Therefore,TB infection control practices in Chinese medical facilities should be strengthened. | Xiao-Ning Wang Tian-Lun He Meng-Jie Geng Yu-Dan Song Ji-Chun Wang Min Liu Sarah Jayne Hoosdally Ana Luíza Gibertoni Cruz Fei Zhao Yu Pang Yan-Lin Zhao Guang-Xue He | 2018 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2018,7,1: | 2
Yersinia pestis: examining wildlife plague surveillance in China and the USA显示文摘Plague is a zoonotic disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis Lehmann and Neumann,1896.Although it is essentially a disease of rodents, plague can also be transmitted to people.Historically, plague has caused mas-sive morbidity and mortality events in human populations, and has recently been classified as a reemerging dis-ease in many parts of the world. This public health threat has led many countries to set up wild and domestic an-imal surveillance programs in an attempt to monitor plague activity that could potentially spill over into human populations. Both China and the USA have plague surveillance programs in place, but the disease dynamics dif-fer in each country. We present data on plague seroprevalence in wildlife and review different approaches for plague surveillance in the 2 countries. The need to better comprehend plague dynamics, combined with the fact that there are still several thousand human plague cases per year, make well-designed wildlife surveillance pro-grams a critical part of both understanding plague risks to humans and preventing disease outbreaks in the future. | Sarah N.BEVINS John A.BAROCH Dale L.NOLTE Min ZHANG Hongxuan HE | 2012 | Integrative Zoology2012,7,1: | 2

Effectiveness of two different acupuncture strategies in patients with vulvodynia Study protocol for a pilot pragmatic controlled trial显示文摘Background: Vulvodynia, or vulvar pain, is a common condition in women; however, there are few evidence-based clinical trials evaluating nonpharmacological therapies for this condition. Acupuncture is one complementary and integrative medicine therapy used by some patients with vulvodynia. This study evaluates two different acupuncture strategies for the treatment of vulvodynia and aims to evaluate whether either of the acupuncture protocols reduces vulvar pain, pain duration or pain with intercourse. The study also examines how long the effect of acupuncture lasts in women with vulvodynia.Methods/design: The study is designed as a randomized controlled trial, focused on two acupuncture protocols. Fifty-one patients who have had vulvodynia for more than 3 months will be recruited.Among them, 34 patients will be randomized into Groups 1 a and 1 b; those who are unwilling to receive acupuncture will be recruited into the standard care group(Group 2). Patients in Group 1 a will have acupuncture focused on the points in the pudendal nerve distribution area, while patients in Group 1 b will receive acupuncture focused on traditional(distal) meridian points. Patients in Group 2 will receive routine conventional treatments, such as using pain medications, local injections and physical therapies or other nonsurgical procedures. Acupuncture will last 45 min per session, once or twice a week for6 weeks. The primary outcome measurement will be objective pain intensity, using the cotton swab test. The secondary outcome measurement will be subjective patient self-reported pain intensity, which will be conducted before cotton swab test. Pain intensities will be measured by an 11-point Numeric Pain Rating Scale. Pain duration and pain score during intercourse are recorded. Local muscle tension, tenderness and trigger points(Ashi points) are also recorded. All measurements will be recorded at baseline(before the treatment), at the end of each week during treatment and at the end of the 6 weeks.Follow-up will be done 6 weeks following the last treatment.Discussion: Results of this trial will provide preliminary data on whether acupuncture provides better outcomes than nonacupuncture treatments, i.e., standard care, and whether acupuncture focused on the points in pudendal nerve distribution, near the pain area, has better results than traditional acupuncture focused on distal meridian points for vulvodynia. | Arthur Yin Fan Sarah F.Alemi Yingping H.Zhu Sudaba Rahimi Hui Wei Haihe Tian Deguang He Changzhen Gong Guanhu Yang Chong He Hui Ouyang | 2018 | Journal of Integrative Medicine2018,16,6: | 1

Characteristics and source attribution of PM2.5 during 2016 G20 Summit in Hangzhou: Efficacy of radical measures to reduce source emissions显示文摘A field campaign was conducted to study the PM2.5 and atmospheric gases and aerosol’s components to evaluate the efficacy of radical measures implemented by the Chinese government to improve air quality during the 2016 G20 Summit in Hangzhou China. The lower level of PM2.5(32.48±11.03μg/m3)observed during the control period compared to precontrol and post-control periods showed that PM2.5 was alleviated by control policies.Based on the mass concentrations of particulate components, the emissions of PM2.5 from local sources including fossil fuel, coal combustion, industry and construction were effectively reduced, but non-exhaust emission was not reduced as effectively as expected. The accumulation of SNA(SO42-,NO3-,NH4+)was observed during the control period, due to the favourable synoptic weather conditions for photochemical reactions and heterogeneous hydrolysis.Because of transboundary transport during the control period, air masses from remote areas contributed significantly to local PM2.5.Although,secondary organic carbon(OCsec)exhibited more sensitivity than primary organic carbon(OCpri)to control measures, and the increased nitrogen oxidation ratio(NOR)implied the regional transport of aged sec-ondary aerosols to the study area.Overall, the results from various approaches revealed that local pollution sources were kept under control, indicating that the implementation of mitigation measures were helpful in improving the air quality of Hangzhou during G20 summit. To reduce ambient levels of PM2.5 further in Hangzhou, regional control policies may have to be taken so as to reduce the impact of long-range transport of air masses from inland China. | Ke Chen Sarah E.Metcalfe Huan Yu Jingsha Xu Honghui Xu Dongsheng Ji Chengjun Wang Hang Xiao Jun He | 2021 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2021,33,8: | 1
Rock inhibitor may compromise human induced pluripotent stem cells for cardiac differentiation in 3D显示文摘Cardiomyocytes differentiated from human induced pluripotent stem cells(iPSCs)are valuable for the understanding/treatment of the deadly heart diseases and their drug screening. However, the very much needed homogeneous 3D cardiac differentiation of human iPSCs is still challenging. Here,it is discovered surprisingly that Rock inhibitor(RI),used ubiquitously to improve the survival/yield of human iPSCs,induces early gastrulation-like change to human iPSCs in 3D culture and may cause their heterogeneous differentiation into all the three germ layers(i.e.,ectoderm,mesoderm,and endoderm)at the commonly used concentration(10μM).This greatly compromises the capacity of human iPSCs for homogeneous 3D cardiac differentiation.By reducing the RI to 1μM for 3D culture, the human iPSCs retain high pluripotency/quality in inner cell mass-like solid 3D spheroids.Consequently, the beating efficiency of 3D cardiac differentiation can be improved to more than 95%in~7 days(compared to less than~50%in 14 days for the 10μM RI condition).Furthermore, the outset beating time(OBT)of all resultant cardiac spheroids(CSs)is synchronized within only 1 day and they form a synchronously beating 3D construct after 5-day culture in gelatin methacrylol(GelMA)hydrogel, showing high homogeneity(in terms of the OBT)in functional maturity of the CSs.Moreover, the resultant cardiomyocytes are of high quality with key functional ultrastructures and highly responsive to cardiac drugs. These discoveries may greatly facilitate the utilization of human iPSCs for understanding and treating heart diseases. | Bin Jiang Wenquan Ou James G.Shamul Hao Chen Sarah Van Belleghem Samantha Stewart Zhenguo Liu John P.Fisher Xiaoming He | 2022 | Bioactive Materials2022,7,3: | 0
Noncovalent reversible binding-enabled facile fabrication of leak-free PDMS microfluidic devices without plasma treatment for convenient cell loading and retrieval显示文摘The conventional approach for fabricating polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)microfluidic devices is a lengthy and inconvenient procedure and may require a clean-room microfabrication facility often not readily available.Furthermore, living cells can’t survive the oxygen-plasma and high-temperature-baking treatments required for covalent bonding to assemble multiple PDMS parts into a leak-free device, and it is difficult to disassemble the devices because of the irreversible covalent bonding. As a result,seeding/loading cells into and retrieving cells from the devices are challenging. Here,we discovered that decreasing the curing agent for crosslinking the PDMS prepolymer increases the noncovalent binding energy of the resultant PDMS surfaces without plasma or any other treatment. This enables convenient fabrication of leak-free microfluidic devices by noncovalent binding for various biomedical applications that require high pressure/flow rates and/or long-term cell culture,by simply hand-pressing the PDMS parts without plasma or any other treatment to bind/assemble.With this method, multiple types of cells can be conveniently loaded into specific areas of the PDMS parts before assembly and due to the reversible nature of the noncovalent bonding, the assembled device can be easily disassembled by hand peeling for retrieving cells.Combining with 3D printers that are widely available for making masters to eliminate the need of photolithography, this facile yet rigorous fabrication approach is much faster and more convenient for making PDMS microfluidic devices than the conventional oxygen plasma-baking-based irreversible covalent bonding method. | Bin Jiang Alisa White Wenquan Ou Sarah Van Belleghem Samantha Stewart James G.Shamul Shaik O.Rahaman John P.Fisher Xiaoming He | 2022 | Bioactive Materials2022,7,10: | 0
Intraspecific variation in shoot flammability in Dracophyllum rosmarinifolium is not predicted by habitat environmental conditions显示文摘Background:Flammability is a compound plant trait that can vary significantly across natural populations within species.Investigating intraspecific variation in flammability provides insights into the evolution of plant flam-mability and inform understanding of wildfire risk and behaviour in different habitats. Methods:We measured four flammability variables, representing ignitibility(time to ignition),sustainability(total burning time),combustibility(maximum temperature during burning)and consumability(percentage of biomass consumed by fire)to assess the shoot-level flammability of Dracophyllum rosmarinifolium(G.Forst.)(Ericaceae),a polymorphic endemic species distributed throughout New Zealand. We examined the relationship between flammability components and a suite of climatic and geographic variables(elevation, latitude, mean annual temperature(MAT),mean annual rainfall(MAR)of the sample locations,etc.).Results:We measured shoot-level flammability components of 62 individuals across eight populations.Burning time, maximum temperature and burnt biomass were positively correlated with each other, while ignition score was independent of other flammability components. All flammability components varied significantly across the eight populations. The habitat conditions we considered were not related to any of the shoot-level flammability components of D.rosmarinifolium.Conclusions:Intraspecific variation in flammability in D.rosmarinifolium may be a byproduct of selection on other functional traits, such as leaf size, shoot lipid content, indicating that plant flammability is an incidental result, rather than selected for,at least in ecosystems without fire as a selective force. | Xinglei Cui Adrian M.Paterson George LW.Perry Sarah V.Wyse Md Azharul Alam Congde Huang Shixing Zhou Lin Xiao Changhong Lai Fang He Dongyu Cao Kate Marshall Timothy J.Curran | 2022 | Forest Ecosystems2022,9,2: | 0
Acupuncture price in forty-one metropolitan regions in the United States: An out-of-pocket cost analysis based on Ok Copay.com显示文摘Few studies have focused on the cost of acupuncture treatments although acupuncture has become popular in the United States(U.S.). The purpose of the current study was to examine the out-of-pocket costs incurred from acupuncture services based on an online website, Ok Copay.com. We examined descriptive statistics(range, median and 20% intervals) for the cost of acupuncture 'first-time visits'and 'follow-up visits' in 41 metropolitan regions in the U.S. The acupuncture prices of 723 clinics throughout 39 metropolitan regions were included, except for Birmingham, Alabama and Detroit, Michigan as there was no online data available at the time of the study for these two regions. The cost range for a first-time acupuncture visit was $15–400;the highest median was $150 in Charleston, South Carolina, while the lowest was $45 in St. Louis, Missouri. The top 10 cities for the highest median were:Baltimore, Washington, D.C., New York, San Francisco, San Jose, Boston, Atlanta, Seattle, Portland and Indianapolis, with the median $120, while the median for all 723 clinics was $112. For the follow-up visits, the cost range was $15–300;the highest median was $108 in Charleston, South Carolina, and the lowest$40 in Miami, Florida. The 10 cities with highest median follow-up acupuncture visit costs were: New York, Baltimore, New Orleans, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, Boston and Atlanta, with the median $85, while for all 723 clinics the median price was $80. The estimation of the average gross annual income of each acupuncturist from the regions studied was $95,760, while the total annual cost of patients seeking acupuncture services in the U.S. was about $3.5 billion in 2018. | Arthur Yin Fan David Dehui Wang Hui Ouyang Haihe Tian Hui Wei Deguang He Changzhen Gong Jipu Wen Ming Jin Chong He Sarah Faggert Alemi Sudaba Rahimi | 2019 | Journal of Integrative Medicine2019,17,5: | 0
