| 2 | Epidemiology of pelvic fractures in adults: Our experience at a tertiary hospital显示文摘Purpose: Pelvic fractures are severe injuries and are often associated with multiple system injuries, exacerbating the overall outcome. In India, the incidence of pelvic fractures is on a rise due to suboptimal roads and traffics but related literature regarding the overall epidemiology of these injuries is scarce and scanty. Our aim was to study the epidemiology of patients admitted with pelvic fractures at a level 1 trauma centre in India. Methods: A 16-month (between September 2015 and December 2016) prospective observational study was carried out on trauma patients with pelvic fractures at a level 1 trauma centre of a tertiary care hospital. Demography of patients, mechanism of injuries and complications were recorded prospectively. Results: We observed 75 patients who presented with pelvic fractures, where 56 were males and 19 were females. Mean age of the study populationwas 37.57 years. Road traffic accidents were the most common mode of injuries. Lateral compression injuries were the most common pattern. Associated injuries frequently encountered were lower extremities and acetabulum fractures, blunt abdominal trauma, urogenital injuries and head injuries. Out of the 75 patients, 52 were treated surgically and 23 were managed by conservative methods. Associated injuries of the extremities, head, abdomen and urogenital system indicated a longer hospital stay. Conclusion: Pelvic fractures, although belong to a relatively rare trauma subset, cause a high morbidity and mortality with considerable burden on the economy. | 8 | Is nitric oxide level affected in postmenopausal women with hypothyroidism?显示文摘AIM To analyze serum levels of nitric oxide(NO), an indicator of cardiovascular health, in post-menopausal females with and without hypothyroidism.METHODS NO was analyzed colorimetrically in 30 newly diagnosed hypothyroid postmenopausal females and 30 postmenopausal females with normal thyroid profile. Results were compared and subjected to appropriate statisticalanalysis. RESULTS The levels of serum NO were found to be significantly decreased in postmenopausal females with hypothyroidism as compared to the levels in those with normal thyroid profile(P value < 0.05). A negative correlation of NO was observed with thyroid stimulating hormone whereas a positive correlation of NO was observed with free T3(FT3), free T4(FT4), T3 and T4 though it was statistically significant only for FT4 among postmenopausal females with hypothyroidism.CONCLUSION Postmenopausal hypothyroid females may be at a risk of compromised cardiovascular health as indicated by low NO levels. | 15 | Modified Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics course: Feasibility, trainee satisfaction, and sustainability potential显示文摘Objective:The main objective of this initiative was to present evaluation results from an inno-vative adaptation of the Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics(ALSO)training course.We modified the traditional ALSO curriculum in our institution by adding hands-on training in laceration repairs and simulation scenarios on acute maternity care.Methods:The modified ALSO provider course was designed to enhance cognitive and proce-dural skills of health care professionals in managing obstetric emergencies.Forty-nine participants attended this course and completed a posttraining survey.Descriptive statistics were used to de-scribe the participant-reported assessment scores for the ALSO course on three domains(subject knowledge,organization and clarity,and teaching effectiveness)for each of 12 course topics.Results:Evaluation of the results showed a high rate of trainee satisfaction as evidenced by the mean assessment scores across all topics ranging from 4.80 to 4.98(out of 5.00).All trainees said they would refer others to the course.Our modified ALSO course effectively addressed the important needs of primary care physicians involved in maternity care,especially in underserved communities where specialized obstetric care is not readily available.Both simulation scenarios and workshops using simulated human tissue provide a better foundation before formal training.Conclusion:Given the changing legal and regulatory climate,we expect that learning to treat complex obstetric situations on the job will become increasingly risky.With this in mind,both simulation scenarios and workshops using simulated human tissue will provide a better foundation before formal training. | Anjali Aggarwal Jason L.Salemi Bernice Yap Jennifer L.Matas Sameer Naik Roger J.Zoorob Hamisu M.Salihu | 2017 | Family Medicine and Community Health2017，5，1： | 0 |
