A proposed surface resistance model for the Penman-Monteith formula to estimate evapotranspiration in a solar greenhouse显示文摘Greenhousing is a technique to bridge season gap in vegetable production and has been widely used worldwide. Calculation of water requirement of crops grown in greenhouse and determination of their irrigation schedules in arid and semi-arid regions are essential for greenhouse maintenance and have thus attracted increased attention over the past decades. The most common method used in the literature to estimate crop evapotranspiration(ET) is the Penman-Monteith(PM) formula. When applied to greenhouse, however, it often uses canopy resistance instead of surface resistance. It is understood that the surface resistance in greenhouse is the result of a combined effect of canopy restriction and soil-surface restriction to water vapor flow, and the relative dominance of one restriction over another depends on crop canopy. In this paper, we developed a surface resistance model in a way similar to two parallel resistances in an electrical circuit to account for both restrictions. Also, considering that wind speed in greenhouse is normally rather small, we compared three methods available in the literature to calculate the aerodynamic resistance, which are the r_a^1 method proposed by Perrier(1975a, b), the r_a^2 method proposed by Thom and Oliver(1977), and the r_a^3 method proposed by Zhang and Lemeu(1992). We validated the model against ET of tomatoes in a greenhouse measured from sap flow system combined with micro-lysimeter in 2015 and with weighing lysimeter in 2016. The results showed that the proposed surface resistance model improved the accuracy of the PM model, especially when the leaf area index was low and the greenhouse was being irrigated. We also found that the aerodynamic resistance calculated from the r_a^1 and r_a^3 methods is applicable to the greenhouse although the latter is slightly more accurate than the former. The proposed surface resistance model, together with the r_a^3 method for aerodynamic resistance, offers an improved approach to estimate ET in greenhouse using the PM formula. | GONG Xuewen LIU Hao SUN Jingsheng GAO Yang ZHANG Xiaoxian Shiva K JHA ZHANG Hao MA Xiaojian WANG Wanning | 2017 | Journal of Arid Land2017,9,4: | 12
Laparoscopic pancreatectomy: Indications and outcomes显示文摘The application of minimally invasive approaches to pancreatic resection for benign and malignant diseases has been growing in the last two decades. Studies have demonstrated that laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy(LDP) is feasible and safe, and many of them show that compared to open distal pancreatectomy, LDP has decreased blood loss and length of hospital stay, and equivalent post-operative complication rates and shortterm oncologic outcomes. LDP is becoming the procedure of choice for benign or small low-grade malignant lesions in the distal pancreas. Minimally invasive pancreaticoduodenectomy(MIPD) has not yet been widely adopted. There is no clear evidence in favor of MIPD over open pancreaticoduodenectomy in operative time, blood loss, length of stay or rate of complications. Robotic surgery has recently been applied to pancreatectomy, and many of the advantages of laparoscopy over open surgery have been observed in robotic surgery. Laparoscopic enucleation is considered safe for patients with small, benign or low-grade malignant lesions of the pancreas that is amenable to parenchyma-preserving procedure. As surgeons' experience with advanced laparoscopic and robotic skills has been growing around the world, new innovations and breakthrough in minimally invasive pancreatic procedures will evolve. | Shuyin Liang Usmaan Hameed Shiva Jayaraman | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,39: | 11
Does computed tomography permeability predict hemorrhagic transformation after ischemic stroke?显示文摘AIM: To use perfusion-derived permeability-surface area product maps to predict hemorrhagic transformation following thrombolytic treatment for acute ischemic stroke.METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed our prospectively kept acute stroke database over five consecutive months for patients with symptoms of acute ischemic stroke(AIS) who had computed tomography(CT) perfusion(CTP) done at arrival. Patients included in the analyses also had to have a follow-up CT. The permeability-surface area product maps(PS) was calculated for the side of the ischemia and/or infarction and for the contralateral unaffected side at the same level. The cerebral blood flow map was used to delineate the ischemic territory. Next, a region of interest was drawn at the centre of this territory on the PS parametric map. Finally, a mirror region of interest was created on the contralateral side at the same level. The relative permeability-surface area product maps(r PS) provided an internal control and was calculated as the ratio of the PS on the side of the AIS to the PS on the contralateral side. A student t-test was performed after log conversion of r PS between patients with and without hemorrhagic transformation. Log conversion was used to convert the data into normal distribution to use t-test. For the group of patients who experienced intracranial bleed, a student t-test was performed between those with only petechial hemorrhage and those with more severe parenchymal hematoma with subarachnoid haemorrhage.RESULTS: Of 84 patients with AIS and CTP at admission, only 42 patients had a follow-up CT. The r PSderived using the normal side as the internal control was significantly higher(P = 0.003) for the 15 cases of hemorrhagic transformation(1.71 + 1.64) compared to 27 cases that did not have any(1.07 + 1.30). Patients with values above the overall mean r PS of 1.3 had an increased likelihood of subsequent hemorrhagic transformation. The sensitivity of using this score to predict hemorrhagic transformation was 71.4, the specificity was 78.6, with a positive predictive value of 62.5 and negative predictive value of 84.6. The accuracy was 76.2. The odds ratio of an event occurring with such an r PS was 9.2. Of the 15 cases of hemorrhagic transformation, there was no difference(P = 0.35) in the r PS between the eight cases of petechial and the seven cases of more severe hemorrhagic events.CONCLUSION: Pretreatment PS can predict the occurrence of hemorrhagic transformation on follow-up of AIS patients with relatively high sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value. | Peggy Yen Allison Cobb Jai Jai Shiva Shankar | 2016 | World Journal of Radiology2016,8,6: | 10
Naringin ameliorates acetic acid induced colitis through modulation of endogenous oxido-nitrosative balance and DNA damage in rats显示文摘The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of naringin on experimentally induced inflammatory bowel disease in rats.Naringin(20,40 and 80 mg/kg) was given orally for 7 days to Wistar rats before induction of colitis by intrarectal instillation of 2 mL of 4%(v/v) acetic acid solution. The degree of colonic mucosal damage was analyzed by examining mucosal damage, ulcer area, ulcer index and stool consistency.Intrarectal administration of 4%acetic acid resulted in significant modulation of serum alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase, superoxide dismutase(SOD),glutathione(GSH),malondialdehyde(MDA) and myeloperoxidase(MPO) content along with colonic nitric oxide(NO),xanthine oxidase(XO) level and protein carbonyl content in the colonic tissue as well as in blood.Naringin(40 and 80 mg/kg) exerted a dose dependent(P < 0.05) ameliorative effect,as it significantly increased hematological parameter as well as colonic SOD and GSH.There was a significant(P < 0.05)and dose dependant inhibition of macroscopical score, ulcer area along with colonic MDA,MPO activity by the7 days of pretreatment of naringin(40 and 80 mg/kg).Biochemical studies revealed a significant(P < 0.05) dose dependant inhibition in serum alkaline phosphatase(ALP) and lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) levels by pretreatment of naringin.Increased levels of colonic NO,XO,protein carbonyl content and DNA damage were also significantly decreased by naringin pretreatment. The findings of the present investigation propose that naringin has an anti-inflammatory,anti-oxidant and anti-apoptotic potential effect at colorectal sites as it modulates the production and expression of oxidative mediators such as MDA,MPO,NO and XO,thus reducing DNA damage. | Venkatashivam Shiva Kumar Anuchandra Ramchandra Rajmane Mohammad Adil Amit Dattatraya Kandhare Pinaki Ghosh Subhash Laxman Bodhankar | 2014 | The Journal of Biomedical Research2014,28,2: | 8

PEPT study of particle motion for different riser exit geometries显示文摘Laboratory and industrial risers are equipped with exits of many different layouts, and numerous publications discuss the influence of riser exit geometry on local and overall solids hydrodynamics in the riser. The present paper reviews literature findings-mostly based upon indirect experimental techniques and often somewhat contradictory.Direct measurement of particle velocity and particle occupancy near and in the riser exit provide a better indication of the effect of riser exit geometry.Positron Emission Particle Tracking(PEPT)was used in this work for the first time to investigate the exit region of the riser. An abrupt or sharp exit causes particles to be knocked out of the gas flow,so forming a recirculation or reflux region in the upper part of the riser. This is much less pronounced with a curved or gradual exit. | Chian Wen Chan Anke Brems Shiva Mahmoudi Jan Baeyens Jonathan Seville David Parker Thomas Leadbeater Joseph Gargiuli | 2010 | Particuology2010,8,6: | 5
Applications of stem cells in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics:Current trends and future perspectives显示文摘A simple overview of daily orthodontic practice involves use of brackets, wires and elastomeric modules. However, investigating the underlying effect of orthodontic forces shows various molecular and cellular changes. Also, orthodontics is in close relation with dentofacial orthopedics which involves bone regeneration. In this review current and future applications of stem cells(SCs) in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics have been discussed. For craniofacial anomalies, SCs have been applied to regenerate hard tissue(such as treatment of alveolar cleft) and soft tissue(such as treatment of hemifacial macrosomia). Several attempts have been done to reconstruct impaired temporomandibular joint. Also, SCs with or without bone scaffolds and growth factors have been used to regenerate bone following distraction osteogenesis of mandibular bone or maxillary expansion. Current evidence shows that SCs also have potential to be used to regenerate infrabony alveolar defects and move the teeth into regenerated areas. Future application of SCs in orthodontics could involve accelerating tooth movement, regenerating resorbed roots and expanding tooth movement limitations. However, evidence supporting these roles is weak and further studies are required to evaluate the possibility of these ideas. | Shiva Safari Arezoo Mahdian Saeed Reza Motamedian | 2018 | World Journal of Stem Cells2018,10,6: | 5
Interventions of natural and synthetic agents in inflammatory bowel disease, modulation of nitric oxide pathways显示文摘Inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)refers to a group of disorders characterized by chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal(GI)tract. The elevated levels of nitric oxide(NO)in serum and affected tissues;mainly synthesized by the inducible nitric oxide synthase(iNOS)enzyme;can exacerbate GI inflammation and is one of the major biomarkers of GI inflammation.Various natural and synthetic agents are able to ameliorate GI inflammation and decrease iNOS expression to the extent comparable with some IBD drugs.Thereby, the purpose of this study was to gather a list of natural or synthetic mediators capable of modulating IBD through the NO pathway.Electronic databases including Google Scholar and PubMed were searched from 1980 to May 2018.We found that polyphenols and particularly flavonoids are able to markedly attenuate NO production and iNOS expression through the nuclear factorκB(NF-κB)and JAK/STAT signaling pathways.Prebiotics and probiotics can also alter the GI microbiota and reduce NO expression in IBD models through a broad array of mechanisms.A number of synthetic molecules have been found to suppress NO expression either dependent on the NF-κB signaling pathway(i.e.,dexamethasone,pioglitazone,tropisetron)or independent from this pathway(i.e.,nicotine,prednisolone,celecoxib,β-adrenoceptor antagonists).Co-administration of natural and synthetic agents can affect the tissue level of NO and may improve IBD symptoms mainly by modulating the Toll like receptor-4 and NF-κB signaling pathways. | Aida Kamalian Masoud Sohrabi Asl Mahsa Dolatshahi Khashayar Afshari Shiva Shamshiri Nazanin Momeni Roudsari Saeideh Momtaz Roja Rahimi Mohammad Abdollahi Amir Hossein Abdolghaffari | 2020 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2020,26,24: | 5

Effects of selenomethionine on acute toxicities from concurrent chemoradiation for inoperable stage Ⅲ nonsmall cell lung cancer显示文摘AIM: To prospectively determine the safety and tolerability of oral L-selenomethionine(SLM) with concurrent chemoradiation(CCRT) for Stage Ⅲ non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC) and estimate if the incidence and/or severity of adverse events could be reduced by its use.METHODS: Sixteen patients with stage Ⅲ NSCLC were accrued to this single arm, phase Ⅱ study. CCRT consisted of radiation given at 2 Gy per fraction for 30-33 fractions, 5 d per week with concurrent weekly Ⅳ paclitaxel 50 mg/m2 followed by carboplatin dosed at an area under the time-concentration curve of 2. SLM was dosed in a loading phase at 4800 μg twice daily for one week prior to CCRT followed by once daily dosing during treatment. RESULTS: No selenium-related toxicity was observed. Analysis revealed grade 3 or higher esophagitis in 3 of 16 patients(19%), pneumonitis in 0, leukopenia in 2(12.5%), and anemia in 1(6%); the latter two were significantly reduced when compared to the protocolstated expected rate of 35%(P = 0.045 for leukopenia, and P < 0.01 for anemia). Median overall survival was 14.9 mo and median failure-free survival was 9 mo(95%CI: 3.3-21.5).CONCLUSION: There may be some protective benefit of selenium in the setting of CCRT for inoperable NSCLC. The data suggests decreased rates of myelosuppression when compared to similarly-treated historical and contemporary controls. Further evaluation of selenium in this setting may be warranted. | Michael Mix Nithya Ramnath Jorge Gomez Charles de Groot Saju Rajan Shiva Dibaj Wei Tan Youcef Rustum Michael B Jameson Anurag K Singh | 2015 | World Journal of Clinical Oncology2015,6,5: | 4
Mesoporous Ag nanocubes synthesized via selectively oxidative etching at room temperature for surface- enhanced Raman spectroscopy显示文摘Silver nanocubes enriched with {100} facets have been extensively used for surface-enhanced Raman scattering. Herein, we report a new water-phase synthesis method for weU-defined Ag nanocubes with tunable sizes via a two-step procedure at room temperature. First, irregularly shaped Ag nanoparticles (INPs) were prepared by reducing silver ammonia solution using ethylal. Second, the agglomerated INPs were selectively etched with HNO3 and C1- to yield {100} facet-rich mesoporous Ag nanocubes. The mechanism of Ag-nanocube formation and growth was investigated in detail by elucidating the involved chemical reactions and physical changes at each step during the synthesis. The addition of C1- anions was responsible for facilitating Ag nanoparticle growth by removing surface-adsorbed Ag+ species, thereby eliminating inter-particle repulsive forces. This agglomeration was found crucial for the subsequent selective oxidation of Ag nanoparticles because the protective agent used, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), was the most effective one for adsorption on the surfaces of Ag nanoparticles of size greater than approximately 50 nm. Importantly mesopores were found inside the Ag nanocubes; this can be attributed to the unavoidable imperfect packing during the agglomeration of INPs. The newly prepared Ag nanocubes were further used to enhance the Raman signal of rhodamine 6G, which is capable of reducing the detection limitation to 10-16 mol·L-1. | Lin Gan Meijia Yang Xi Ke Guofeng Cui Xudong Chen Shiva Gupta William Kellogg Drew Higgins Gang Wu | 2015 | Nano Research2015,8,7: | 4
Macrophages are the primary effector cells in IL-7-induced arthritis显示文摘Synovial macrophages are crucial in the development of joint inflammation and bone damage;however, the pathways that controlmacrophage remodeling in inflammatory M1 cells or bone-eroding osteoclasts are not fully understood. We determined thatelevated IL-7R/CD127 expression is the hallmark of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) M1 macrophages and that these cells are highlyresponsive to interleukin-7 (IL-7)-driven osteoclastogenesis. We established that lipopolysaccharide (LPS), interferon-γ (IFNγ), andtumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα), the classic M1 macrophage mediators, enhance IL-7R expression in RA and murine macrophages. The local expression of IL-7 provokes arthritis, predominantly through escalating the number of F480^(+)iNOS^(+) cells rather than CD3^(+)T cells. Ectopic LPS injection stabilizes IL-7-induced arthritis by increasing myeloid IL-7R expression, in part via IFNγ induction.Hence, in RAG−/− mice, IL-7-mediated arthritis is suppressed because of the reduction in myeloid IL-7R expression due to the lackof IFNγ. Moreover, the amelioration of IL-7-induced arthritis by anti-TNF therapy is due to a decrease in the number of cells in theunique F480^(+)iNOS^(+)IL-7R^(+)CCL5^(+) subset, with no impact on the F480^(+)Arginase^(+) cell or CD3^(+) T cell frequency. Consistent with thepreclinical findings, the findings of a phase 4 study performed with RA patients following 6 months of anti-TNF therapy revealedthat IL-7R expression was reduced without affecting the levels of IL-7. This study shifts the paradigm by discovering that IL-7-induced arthritis is dependent on F480^(+)iNOS^(+)IL-7R^(+)CCL5^(+) cell function, which activates TH-1 cells to amplify myeloid IL-7Rexpression and disease severity. | Seung-jae Kim Huan J.Chang Michael VVolin Sadiq Umar Katrien Van Raemdonck Aimee Chevalier Karol Palasiewicz John W.Christman Suncica Volkov Shiva Arami Mehrdad Maz Anjali Mehta Ryan K.Zomorrodi David A.Fox Nadera Sweiss Shiva Shahrara | 2020 | Cellular & Molecular Immunology2020,17,7: | 4

This catalyst is easily separated by magnetic devices and can be reused without any apparent loss of activity for the reaction. | 18 | Solids flow diagram of a CFB riser using Geldart B-type powders显示文摘Riser operating modes are vital to designing a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) reactor for a required process of either a gas-solid or a gas-catalytic nature. Different operating modes provide different solids' residence times and mixing behaviors, which define the reactions' efficiency and yield. The literature demonstrates distinct operating modes resulting from observed differences in slip factors and the range of particle velocities and their associated residence time distribution. The present research uses positron emission particle tracking (PEPT) in a riser of B-type bed material to determine the different operating modes by measuring (i) particle velocities and residence time distribution, (ii) population densities of these particles in the cross-sectional area of the riser, and (iii) solids flow pattern at the bottom of the riser. Data treatment defines four distinct solids hold-up regimes in the riser and proposes a 'phase diagram' depicting the existence of the different operating modes (dilute, dense, core-annulus and combined) as a function of the superficial gas velocity and solids circulation flux in the riser. The delineated regimes have good agreement with available literature data and known industrial operations. Comparison with literature data for risers using A-type powders is also fair. The diagram enables CFB designers to better delineate operating characteristics. | Shiva Mahmoudi Chian Wen Chan Anke Brems Jonathan Seville Jan Baeyens | 2012 | Particuology2012,10,1: | 3 |
A comparative study of sequential vs.simultaneous type Ⅰ tympanoplasty in patients with bilateral chronic otitis media-Mucosal type显示文摘Background:Patients with bilateral chronic otitis media-mucosal type have been conventionally treated with sequential tympanoplasty.Bilateral simultaneous tympanoplasty is usually not preferred because of the theoretical risk of iatrogenic sensorineural hearing loss. With the advent of modern surgical instruments and surgical techniques, the risk is expected to be lower. This study compares the clinical outcomes in typeⅠtympanoplasty performed simultaneously and sequentially.Materials&methods:This randomized prospective study was carried out in a tertiary care hospital between August 2015 and July 2017.A total of 30 patients were divided into two groups of 15 each. This study analyzed the graft uptake, pure tone audiogram findings pre-and post-operatively,duration of surgery and number of hospital visit for each patient and the outco mes were co mpared between both the groups.Result:Patients undergoing bilateral simultaneous tympanoplasty had significantly lesser mean duration of surgery and number of hospital visits than the patients undergoing sequential tympanoplasty.Graft uptake and postoperative wound infections were similar in both the groups.Postoperative hearing improvement was significantly better in the bilateral simultaneous tympanoplasty group. However, further studies are needed to authenticate this observation.None of the patients had a postoperative deterioration of hearing or sensorineural hearing loss. Conclusion:Bilateral simultaneous tympanoplasty is not only feasible but also better than sequential tympanoplasty, especially in terms of operating time,follow-up and overall financial implications on the patient. | Preethi Umamaheswaran Sanjeev Mohanty Vinoth Manimaran Sathishkumar Jayagandhi Shiva Priya Jeyabalakrishnan | 2020 | Journal of Otology2020,15,2: | 3
