3Life cycle carbon emission assessment of a multi-purpose university building:A case study of Sri Lanka显示文摘Buildings are known to significantly affect the global carbon emissions throughout their life cycle. To mitigate carbon emissions, investigation of the current performance of buildings with regard to energy consumption and carbon emissions is necessary. This paper presents a process-based life cycle assessment methodology for assessing carbon emissions of buildings, using a multistorey reinforced concrete building in a Sri Lankan university as a case study. The entire cradle-to-grave building life cycle was assessed and the life span of the building was assumed as 50 years. The results provide evidence of the significance of operation and material production stages, which contributed to the total carbon emissions by 63.22% and 31.59% respectively. Between them, the main structural materials, concrete and reinforcement steel made up 61.91% of the total carbon emitted at the material production stage. The life cycle carbon emissions of the building were found to be 31.81 kg·m^(–2) CO_2 per year, which is comparable with the values obtained in similar studies found in the literature. In minimizing the life cycle carbon emissions, the importance of identifying control measures for both building operation and material production at the early design stage were emphasized. Although the other life cycle stages only contributed to about 5.19% of the life cycle carbon emissions, they should also receive attention when formulating control strategies. Some of the recommended strategies are introducing energy efficiency measures in building design and operation, using renewable energy for building operation and manufacturing of materials,identifying designs that can save mass material quantities,using alternative materials that are locally available in Sri Lanka and implementing material reuse and recycling.This study is one of the first to undertake a life cycle carbon emissions assessment for a building in the Sri Lankan context, with the hope of facilitating environmentallyfriendly buildings and promoting sustainable construction practices in the country.Ramya KUMANAYAKE Hanbin LUO 2018Frontiers of Engineering Management2018,5,3:3

5Effects of velocity and thermal wall slip on magnetohydrodynamics(MHD)boundary layer viscous flow and heat transfer of a nanofluid over a non-linearly-stretching sheet:a numerical study显示文摘In this analysis,the boundary layer viscous flow of nanofluids and heat transfer over a non-linearly-stretching sheet in the presence of a magnetic field is presented.Velocity and thermal slip conditions are considered instead of no slip conditions at the boundary.A similarity transformation set is used to transform the governing partial differential equations into non-linear ordinary differential equations.The reduced equations are solved numerically using the Keller box method.The influence of the governing parameters on the dimensionless velocity,temperature,nanoparticle concentration as well as the skin friction coefficient,Nusselt number,and local Sherwood number are analyzed.It is found that as the velocity slip parameter increases,the velocity profile is decreased and the skin friction and heat transfer decreased while the mass transfer is increased.Increasing the thermal slip parameter causes decreases in the heat and mass transfer rates.The results are presented in both graphical and tabular forms.Dodda Ramya R.Srinivasa Raju J.Anand Rao A.J.Chamkha 2018Propulsion and Power Research2018,7,2:2
6Noninvasive in vivo cell tracking using molecular imaging:A useful tool for developing mesenchymal stem cell-based cancer treatment显示文摘Mounting evidence has emphasized the potential of cell therapies in treating various diseases by restoring damaged tissues or replacing defective cells in the body.Cell therapies have become a strong therapeutic modality by applying noninvasive in vivo molecular imaging for examining complex cellular processes,understanding pathophysiological mechanisms of diseases,and evaluating the kinetics/dynamics of cell therapies.In particular,mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)have shown promise in recent years as drug carriers for cancer treatment.They can also be labeled with different probes and tracked in vivo to assess the in vivo effect of administered cells,and to optimize therapy.The exact role of MSCs in oncologic diseases is not clear as MSCs have been shown to be involved in tumor progression and inhibition,and the exact interactions between MSCs and specific cancer microenvironments are not clear.In this review,a multitude of labeling approaches,imaging modalities,and the merits/demerits of each strategy are outlined.In addition,specific examples of the use of MSCs and in vivo imaging in cancer therapy are provided.Finally,present limitations and future outlooks in terms of the translation of different imaging approaches in clinics are discussed.Ramya Lakshmi Rajendran Manasi Pandurang Jogalekar Prakash Gangadaran Byeong-Cheol Ahn 2020World Journal of Stem Cells2020,12,12:2
7Comparative effectiveness of adipose-derived mesenchymal stromal cells in the management of knee osteoarthritis:A meta-analysis显示文摘BACKGROUND Osteoarthritis(OA)is the most common joint disorder,is associated with an increasing socioeconomic impact owing to the ageing population.AIM To analyze and compare the efficacy and safety of bone-marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells(BM-MSCs)and adipose tissue-derived MSCs(AD-MSCs)in knee OA management from published randomized controlled trials(RCTs).METHODS Independent and duplicate electronic database searches were performed,including PubMed,EMBASE,Web of Science,and Cochrane Library,until August 2021 for RCTs that analyzed the efficacy and safety of AD-MSCs and BM-MSCs in the management of knee OA.The visual analog scale(VAS)score for pain,Western Ontario McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index(WOMAC),Lysholm score,Tegner score,magnetic resonance observation of cartilage repair tissue score,knee osteoarthritis outcome score(KOOS),and adverse events were analyzed.Analysis was performed on the R-platform using OpenMeta(Analyst)software.Twenty-one studies,involving 936 patients,were included.Only one study compared the two MSC sources without patient randomization;hence,the results of all included studies from both sources were pooled,and a comparative critical analysis was performed.RESULTS At six months,both AD-MSCs and BM-MSCs showed significant VAS improvement(P=0.015,P=0.012);this was inconsistent at 1 year for BM-MSCs(P<0.001,P=0.539),and AD-MSCs outperformed BM-MSCs compared to controls in measures such as WOMAC(P<0.001,P=0.541),Lysholm scores(P=0.006;P=0.933),and KOOS(P=0.002;P=0.012).BM-MSC-related procedures caused significant adverse events(P=0.003)compared to AD-MSCs(P=0.673).CONCLUSION Adipose tissue is superior to bone marrow because of its safety and consistent efficacy in improving pain and functional outcomes.Future trials are urgently warranted to validate our findings and reach a consensus on the ideal source of MSCs for managing knee OA.Sathish Muthu Sandesh C Patil Naveen Jeyaraman Madhan Jeyaraman Prakash Gangadaran Ramya Lakshmi Rajendran Eun Jung Oh Manish Khanna Ho Yun Chung Byeong-Cheol Ahn 2023World Journal of Orthopedics2023,14,1:2

14Programmable protective device for LV distribution system protection显示文摘High quality electric power supply is the prime goal in the modern power systems around the world.One of the main ways to achieve this is the protection of the system which needs to be fast,reliable and cost effective.The objective of this paper is to provide protection of equipments in low voltage(LV)distribution system and thereafter to avoid their failure due to abnormal operating conditions.The proposed device provides protection for industrial,commercial and residential equipments by monitoring under voltage,over voltage and over current conditions using microcontroller,transistor and other discrete components.The microcontroller is the heart of this protective device which performs the major control of the device.The designed circuit can withstand the loads and the set voltage range so as to supply the connected load for any voltage variation between 220 and 240 Volts.It can be used to protect loads such as refrigerator,TV,VCR/DVD player etc.against undesirable over and under voltage conditions as well as surges caused due to sudden failure of power supply mains.This device can also be used directly as standalone equipment between the supply mains and the load.The over/under voltage and over current cut-off with time delay provides over/under-voltage and over current protection and also protection against any transients.S.Gopiya Naik Vibin Ravi Ramya Arshiya 2018Protection and Control of Modern Power Systems2018,3,1:1
