| 2 | Comparison of visual analogue scale (VAS) and the Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE) score in evaluation of post septoplasty patients显示文摘Objective:To compare and correlate the efficacy of the NOSE score&the VAS score in determining the symptomatic benefit in patients undergoing septoplasty.Materials and methods:Eighty patients with deviated nasal septum undergoing septoplasty were included in the study.NOSE score&VAS score(out of 100)was documented before and after surgery.Results were correlated and compared statistically.Results:In the NOSE score,the most bothersome symptom was trouble breathing through the nose(85.83);followed by Nasal obstruction or blockage(82.50).Wilcoxon test showed significant improvement with NOSE score and VAS score in all patients at 1 month and 3 months.Spearman’s coefficient showed a positive correlation between the two,though the score improvement and patient satisfaction rate was significantly high with NOSE score.Conclusions:NOSE score and the VAS score both provide effective framework for evaluating treatment responses after septoplasty.However,the NOSE score showed higher improvement and better patient satisfaction rate when used to measure of nasal obstruction as compared to the VAS score. | Radhika Hiren Shukla Sanjana Vijay Nemade Kiran Jaywant Shinde | 2020 | World Journal of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery2020,6,1: | 28 |
| 3 | Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase activation and neuronal death after ischemic stroke显示文摘Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase(NOX) is a multisubunit enzyme complex that utilizes nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate to produce superoxide anions and other reactive oxygen species. Under normal circumstances, reactive oxygen species mediate a number of important cellular functions, including the facilitation of adaptive immunity. In pathogenic circumstances, however,excess reactive oxygen species generated by NOX promotes apoptotic cell death. In ischemic stroke, in particular, it has been shown that both NOX activation and derangements in glucose metabolism result in increased apoptosis. Moreover, recent studies have established that glucose, as a NOX substrate, plays a vital role in the pathogenesis of reperfusion injury. Thus, NOX inhibition has the potential to mitigate the deleterious impact of hyperglycemia on stroke. In this paper, we provide an overview of this research,coupled with a discussion of its implications for the development of NOX inhibition as a strategy for the treatment of ischemic stroke. | 4 | Bioefficacy of Mentha piperita essential oil against dengue fever mosquito Aedes aegypti L显示文摘Objective:To assess the larvicidal and repellent potential of the essential oil extracted from the leaves of peppermint plant,Mentha piperita(M.piperita)against the larval and adult stages of Aedes aegypli(Ae.Aegypti).Methods:The larvicidal potential of peppermint oil was evaluated against early fourth instar larvae of Ae.aegypli using WHO protocol.The mortality counts were made after 24 and 48 h,and LC_(50)and LC_(90)values were calculated.The efficacy of peppermint oil as mosquito repellent was assessed using the human-bait technique.The measured area of one arm of a human volunteer was applied with the oil and the other arm was applied with ethanol.The mosquito bites on both the arms were recorded for 3 rain after every 15 min.The experiment continued for 3 h and the percent protection was calculated.Results:The essential oil extracted from M.piperita possessed excellent larvicidal efficiency against dengue vector.The bioassays showed an LC_(50)and LC_(90)value of 111.9 and 295.18 ppm,respectively after 24 h of exposure.The toxicity of the oil increased 11.8%when the larvae were exposed to the oil for 48h.The remarkable repellent properties of M.piperita essential oil were established against adults Ae.aegypti.The application of oil resulted in 100%protection till 150 min.After next 30 min,only 1-2 bites were recorded as compared with 8-9 bites on the control arm.Conclusions:The peppermint essential oil is proved to be efficient larvicide and repellent against dengue vector.Further studies are needed to identify the possible role of oil as adulticide.oviposition deterrent and ovicidal agent.The isolation of active ingredient from the oil could help in formulating strategies for mosquito control. | Sarita Kumar Naim Wahab Radhika Warikoo | 2011 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2011,1,2: | 5 |
| 5 | Rare earth doped cobalt aluminate blue as an environmentally benign colorant显示文摘Increasing energy cost calls for exterior coatings with high near infra-red reflectance,so as to reduce heat absorption and in turn cost of air-conditioning.While modulations of substrate,use of white metal oxides as pigments or under-layers has been reported in past,reports on metal oxide or doped metal oxide pigments with high NIR reflectance is scarce.We report for the first time a blue colored cobalt aluminate type pigment prepared through doping of cerium,praseodymium or neodymium.CIELAB color measurements and calculation ofDE indicated that the Nd doped sample had crystal size of(36±1)nm,bandgap value of(2.4±0.2)eV and color coordinates similar to that of cobalt aluminate.The molar ratio as estimated by EDX was found to be Al:Cu:Co:Ce:Nd:O=2:0.06:0.06:0.012:0.00012:6.18.The pigment was found to have potential applications as a cool blue colorant,owing to changes in optical properties arising out of crystal chemistry changes.Incorporation of rare earth metal ions was found to enhance the NIR reflectance by 10%,when compared to a conventional cobalt aluminate pigment.The oxide has been well characterized and its performance as a pigment evaluated.We have proposed that changes in crystal lattice when neodymium enters into Ce4+sites enhance the NIR reflectance by about 9%as against the entry of praseodymium. | Sri Parasara RADHIKA Kalarical Janardhanan SREERAM Balachandran Unni NAIR | 2012 | Journal of Advanced Ceramics2012,1,4: | 3 |
| 6 | Advances in cirrhosis: Optimizing the management of hepatic encephalopathy显示文摘Hepatic encephalopathy(HE) is a major complication of cirrhosis resulting in significant socioeconomic burden, morbidity, and mortality. HE can be further subdivided into covert HE(CHE) and overt HE(OHE). CHE is a subclinical, less severe manifestation of HE and requires psychometric testing for diagnosis. Due to the time consuming screening process and lack of standardized diagnostic criteria, CHE is frequently underdiagnosed despite its recognized role as a precursor to OHE. Screening for CHE with the availability of the Stroop test has provided a pragmatic method to promptly diagnose CHE. Management of acute OHE involves institution of lactulose, the preferred first-line therapy. In addition, prompt recognition and treatment of precipitating factors is critical as it may result in complete resolution of acute episodes of OHE. Treatment goals include improvement of daily functioning, evaluation for liver transplantation, and prevention of OHE recurrence. For secondary prophylaxis, intolerance to indefinite lactulose therapy may lead to non-adherence and has been identified as a precipitating factor for recurrent OHE. Rifaximin is an effective add-on therapy to lactulose for treatment and prevention of recurrent OHE. | 7 | Biochar-mediated regulation of greenhouse gas emission and toxicity reduction in bioremediation of organophosphorus pesticide-contaminated soils显示文摘Organophosphorus pesticides(OPPs) are a set of toxic persistent organic pollutants(POPs) present in the environment. Recently, biochar-mediated bioremediation has exhibited many advantages over conventional methods for the remediation of pesticide-contaminated soil. In the present study, biochar and nitrogen fertilizer(NH_4NO_3)were employed to remediate OPP-contaminated soil and the greenhouse gas(GHG) emission during 90 days of incubation was investigated. After thermal desorption treatment, the content of organophosphorus pesticides reduced from 175.61 μg·kg^(-1) to 62.68 μg·kg^(-1). The addition of NH_4NO_3 in the following bioremediation led to larger reduction(34.35%) of the pesticide concentration than that of biochar(31.90%) for the contaminated soils with thermal desorption treatment, while the simultaneous addition of biochar and NH_4NO_3 led to the largest reduction of pesticide concentration(11.07%) for the soil without thermal desorption treatment. The addition of biochar and NH_4NO_3 only slightly increased the emission rate of GHGs from the soil without thermal treatment,but remarkably increased the emission rate of GHGs from the soil after thermal treatment. In most cases, the addition of NH_4NO_3 is more effective than biochar to promote the degradation of pesticide, but also exhibited higher GHG emission. | 10 | Larvicidal and irritant activities of hexane leaf extracts of Citrus sinensis against dengue vector Aedes aegypti L.显示文摘Objective:To assess the larvicidal and irritant activities of the hexane extracts of leaves of Citrus sinensis(C.sinensis)against the early fourth instars and female adults of Aedes aegypti(Ae.aegypti).Methods:The larvicidal potential of the prepared leaf extract was evaluated against early fourth instar larvae of Ae.aegypli using WHO protocol.The mortality counts were made after 24 h and LC_(50)and LG_(50)values were calculated.The efficacy of extract as mosquito irritant was assessed by contact irritancy assays.Extract-impregnated paper was placed on a glass plate over which a perspex funnel with a hole on the top was kept inverted.Single female adult,3-day old unfed/blood-fed,was released inside the funnel.After 3 min of acclimatization time,the time taken for the first take-off and total number of flights undertaken during 15 min were scored.Results:The citrus leaf extracts from hexane possessed moderate larvicidal efficiency against dengue vector.The bioassays resulted in an LC_(50)and LC_(90)value of 446.84 and 1370.96 ppm,respectively after 24 h of exposure.However,the extracts were proved to be remarkable irritant against adults Ae.aegypti,more pronounced effects being observed on blood-fed females than unfed females.The extract-impregnated paper was thus proved to be 7-11 times more irritable as compared with the control paper.Conclusions:The hexane extracts from C.sinensis leaves are proved to be reasonably larvicidal But remarkably irritant against dengue vector.Further studies are needed to identify the possible role of extract as adulticide,oviposition deterrent and ovicidal agent.The isolation of active ingredient from the extract could help in formulating strategies for mosquito control. | Radhika Warikoo Ankita Ray Jasdeep Kaur Sandhu Roopa Sanial Naim Wahab Sarita Kumar | 2012 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2012,2,2: | 2 |

| 13 | 市售长叶松油和锡兰肉桂油对登革热媒蚊埃及伊蚊的灭幼效果(英文)显示文摘松油和桂皮油由于具有芳香性气味,因而成为良好的成虫驱避剂,但是关于它们对蚊虫的杀幼虫作用研究不多。为揭示市售的长叶松Pinus longifolia油和锡兰肉桂Cinnamomum zeylanicum油对来源于印度德里的埃及伊蚊Aedes aegypti4龄幼虫的毒杀潜力,我们进行了室内研究,以幼虫死亡率及行为改变和形态改变等指标评估其杀幼虫潜力。结果表明:两种油对埃及伊蚊4龄幼虫均具有毒杀作用,且松油的灭幼效果优于桂皮油。松油的LC50和LC70值分别为0.33093mg/L和0.54476mg/L,而桂皮油的LC50和LC70值分别为0.63159mg/L和0.77736。进一步观察发现,LC90剂量下桂皮油的杀幼虫潜力强于松油,其LC90为1.11879mg/L,而松油的LC90为1.04915mg/L。在处理的幼虫中观察到行为改变,如兴奋、坐立不安、颤抖、痉挛然后瘫痪,说明这两种油可能对其神经肌肉系统产生了影响。显微观察处理幼虫的形态改变发现,与对照相比,大多数器官的外观正常,只是肛鳃略为内收缩而引起结构畸形,提示肛腮可能是这两种油的作用位点,腮的功能异常引起了幼虫死亡。这两种油品可开发用作防治蚊虫的新型杀幼虫药剂。 | Radhika WARIKOO Naim WAHAB Sarita KUMAR | 2011 | 昆虫学报2011,54,7: | 2 |

| 15 | Awareness, self-management behaviors, health literacy and kidney function relationships in specialty practice显示文摘AIM To determine the relationship between chronic kidney disease(CKD) awareness(CKD-A), self-management behaviors(CKD-SMB) knowledge, performance of CKDSMBs, health literacy(HL) and kidney function. METHODS Participants were eligible patients attending an outpatient nephrology clinic. Participants were administered: Newest Vital Sign to measure HL, CKD self-managementknowledge tool(CKD-SMKT) to assess knowledge, past performance of CKD-SMB, CKD-A. Estimated GFR(e GFR) was determined using the MDRD-4 equation. Duration of clinic participation and CKD cause were extracted from medical charts. RESULTS One-hundred-fifty patients participated in the study. e GFRs ranged from 17-152 m L/min per 1.73 m2. Majority(83%) of respondents had stage 3 or 4 CKD, low HL(63%), and were CKD aware(88%). Approximately 40%(10/25) of patients in stages 1 and 2 and 6.4%(8/125) in stages 3 and 4 were unaware of their CKD. CKD-A differed with stage(P < 0.001) but not by HL level, duration of clinic participation, or CKD cause. Majority of respondents(≥ 90%) correctly answered one or more CKD-SMKT items. Knowledge of one behavior, 'controlling blood pressure' differed significantly by CKD-A. CKD-A was associated with past performance of two CKD-SMBs, 'controlling blood pressure'(P = 0.02), and 'keeping healthy body weight'(P = 0.01). Adjusted multivariate analyses between CKD-A and:(1) HL; and(2) CKD-SMB knowledge were nonsignificant. However, there was a significant relationship between CKD-A and kidney function after controlling for demographics, HL, and CKD-SMB(P < 0.05). CONCLUSION CKD-A is not associated with HL, or better CKD-SMBs.
