Ground response to high horizontal stresses during longwall retreat and its implications for longwall headgate support显示文摘Roof falls in longwall headgate can occur when weak roof and high horizontal stress are present. To prevent roof falls in the headgate under high horizontal stress, it is important to understand the ground response to high horizontal stress in the longwall headgate and the requirements for supplemental roof support. In this study, a longwall headgate under high horizontal stress was instrumented to monitor stress change in the pillars, deformations in the roof, and load in the cable bolts. The conditions in the headgate were monitored for about six months as the longwall face passed by the instrumented site. The roof behavior in the headgate near the face was carefully observed during longwall retreat.Numerical modeling was performed to correlate the modeling results with underground observation and instrumentation data and to quantify the effect of high horizontal stress on roof stability in the longwall headgate. This paper discusses roof support requirements in the longwall headgate under high horizontal stress in regard to the pattern of supplemental cable bolts and the critical locations where additional supplemental support is necessary. | Peter Zhang Dave Gearhart Mark Van Dyke Daniel Su Essie Esterhuizen Berk Tulu | 2019 | International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2019,29,1: | 6
Tianwen-1 MINPA observations in the solar wind显示文摘The Mars Ion and Neutral Particle Analyzer(MINPA)is one of the three scientific instruments onboard the Tianwen-1 orbiter to investigate the Martian space environment.During Tianwen-1’s transfer orbit to Mars, the MINPA was switched on to measure the solar wind ions. Here,we present the first results of the MINPA observations in the solar wind.During cruise, nearly half of the MINPA ion field-of-view(FOV)was blocked by the lander capsule;thus only the solar-wind ions with azimuthal speeds pointing towards the unblocked FOV sectors could be detected. We perform a detailed comparison of the MINPA’s solar wind observations with data from Earth-based missions when MINPA reached its count-rate peak, finding a general consistency of the ion moments between them. The blocking effect due to the lander is evaluated quantitatively under varying solar-wind velocity conditions.Despite the blocking effect, the MINPA’s solar wind measurements during the transfer orbit suggest a good performance. | AiBing Zhang LingGao Kong WenYa Li Lei Li BinBin Tang ZhaoJin Rong Yong Wei JiJie Ma YiTeng Zhang LiangHai Xie YuXian Wang JianSen He Bin Liu WenJing Wang Bin Su JiaWei Li Xu Tan Fang Wang TaiFeng Jin FuHao Qiao Peter Wurz Yan Zhu YunFei Bai YiRen Li XinBo Zhu YueQiang Sun YongLiao Zou Chi Wang | 2022 | Earth and Planetary Physics2022,6,1: | 5
Enhanced tensile properties of a reversion annealed 6.5Mn-TRIP alloy via tailoring initial microstructure and cold rolling reduction显示文摘The feasibility of improving the overall performance of medium Mn steels was demonstrated via tailoring the initial microstructure and cold rolling reduction. The combined effects of cooling patterns after hot rolling(HR) and cold rolling(CR) reductions show:(1) as the cooling pattern varied from furnace cooling(FC) to oil quenching(OQ),the intercritically annealed microstructure was dramatically refined and the fraction of recrystallized ferrite dropped, regardless of CR reductions. This resulted in both high yield/ultimate tensile strengths(YS/UTS) but low total elongation to fracture(El);(2) as the CR reduction increased from 50% to 75%,the OQ-samples after annealing exhibited a more refined microstructure with relatively higher fractions of retained austenite and sub-structure,leading to higher YS and UTS but lower El; whereas the FC samples appeared to exhibit little difference in overall tensile properties in both cases. The differences in microstructural evolution with cooling patterns and CR reductions were explained by the calculated accumulated effective strain(εAES),which was considered to be related to degrees of recovery and recrystallization of the deformed martensite(α').The optimal tensile properties of ~1 GPa YS and ~40 GPa·% UTS×El were achieved in the OQ-50%CR annealed samples at 650?C for 1 h.This was quite beneficial to large-scale production of ultra-high strength steels, owing to its serious springback during heavy cold working. | Minghui Cai Hongshou Huang Junhua Su Hua Ding Peter D.Hodgson | 2018 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2018,34,8: | 5
Clear cell hepatocellular carcinoma: origin, metabolic traits and fate of glycogenotic clear and ground glass cells显示文摘Clear cell hepatocellular carcinoma(CCHCC)has hitherto been considered an uncommon, highly differentiated variant of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) with a relatively favorable prognosis. CCHCC is composed of mixtures of clear and/or acidophilic ground glass hepatocytes with excessive glycogen and/or fat and shares histology, clinical features and etiology with common HCCs. Studies in animal models of chemical, hormonal and viral hepatocarcinogenesis and observations in patients with chronic liver diseases prone to develop HCC have shown that the majority of HCCs are preceded by, or associated with, focal or diffuse excessive storage of glycogen(glycogenosis) which later may be replaced by fat(lipidosis/steatosis). In ground glass cells, the glycogenosis is accompanied by proliferation of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum, which is closely related to glycogen particles and frequently harbors the hepatitis B surface antigen(HBs Ag).From the findings in animal models a sequence of changes has been established, commencing with preneoplastic glycogenotic liver lesions, often containing ground glass cells, and progressing to glycogen-poor neoplasms via various intermediate stages, including glycogenotic/lipidotic clear cell foci, clear cell hepatocellular adenomas(CCHCA) rich in glycogen and/or fat, and CCHCC. A similar process seems to take place in humans, with clear cells frequently persisting in CCHCC and steatohepatitic HCC, which presumably represent intermediate stages in the development rather than particular variants of HCC. During the progression of the preneoplastic lesions, the clear and ground glass cells transform into cells characteristic of common HCC. The sequential cellular changes are associated with metabolic aberrations, which start with an activation of the insulin signaling cascade resulting in preneoplastic hepatic glycogenosis. The molecular and metabolic changes underlying the glycogenosis/lipidosis are apparently responsible for the dramatic metabolic shift from gluconeogenesis to the pentose phosphate pathway and Warburg-type glycolysis, which provide precursors and energy for an ever increasing cell proliferation during progression. | Peter Bannasch Silvia Ribback Qin Su Doris Mayer | 2017 | Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Diseases International2017,16,6: | 4
Sedimentology and Sequence Stratigraphy of Marine to Lacustrine Deltaic Deposits in a Craton Basin and Their Controlling Factors: Shan 2 Member–He 8 Member(Guadalupian–Lopingian, Permian), Southeast Ordos Basin, North China显示文摘The Shan 2 Member, Shan 1 Member and He 8 Member of the Mid–Late Permian Shanxi and lower Xiashihezi formations, in the southeastern Ordos Basin, together comprise ~150 m of deltaic deposits. This sequence records an overall evolution from deep marine environment to shallow lake associated with braided river, braided river delta and meandering river delta. Core description, well log interpretation, and stable isotope analysis, including carbon, oxygen and strontium, were conducted to understand the sedimentary evolution of Shan 2 to He 8 Member. The Shanxi Formation, which consists of the Shan 2 and Shan 1 members, is characterized by a tidal-influenced meandering river delta environment and a higher δ^(13)C value and ^(87)Sr?(^(86)Sr) ratio and a lower δ^(18)O value. The He 8 Member, the basal part of the Xiashihezi Formation, is featured by a braided river to braided river delta system and a lower δ^(13)C value, ^(87)Sr?(^(86)Sr) ratio, and a higher δ^(18)O value. Four third-order depositional sequences separated by five sequence boundaries are determined. Coarsening upward sequences of the Shan 2 Member–He 8 Member indicate a general regression trend, which can be correlated to global sea-level fall occurring during the Roadian–Wuchiapingian, as also evidenced by previous published zircon U–Pb results. The coal-bearing sequence(Shanxi Formation) to non-coal-bearing sequence(He 8 Member), as well as a decrease of ^(87)Sr?(^(86)Sr), suggest a trend from humid to arid climates. A combined effect of sea-level drop and a small uplift at the end of Shanxi Formation are proposed. | SHAN Xin YU Xinghe Peter CLIFT LI Yalong JIN Lina SU Dongxu DU Yonghui ZHOU Jinsong HAN Xiaoqin | 2018 | Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2018,92,1: | 4
Mars Ion and Neutral Particle Analyzer (MINPA) for Chinese Mars Exploration Mission (Tianwen-1): Design and ground calibration显示文摘The main objective of the Mars Ion and Neutral Particle Analyzer(MINPA)aboard the Chinese Mars Exploration Mission(Tianwen-1)is to study the solar wind-Mars interaction by measuring the ions and energetic neutral atoms(ENAs)near Mars. The MINPA integrates ion and ENA measurements into one sensor head, sharing the same electronics box.The MINPA utilizes a standard toroidal top-hat electrostatic analyzer(ESA)followed by a time of flight(TOF)unit to provide measurement of ions with energies from 2.8 eV to 25.9 keV and ENAs from 50 eV to 3 keV with a base time resolution of 4 seconds.Highly polished silicon single crystal substrates with an Al2O3 film coating are used to ionize the ENAs into positive ions. These ions can then be analyzed by the ESA and TOF,to determine the energy and masses of the ENAs.The MINPA provides a 360°×90°field of view(FOV)with 22.5°×5.4°angular resolution for ion measurement, and a 360°×9.7°FOV with 22.5°×9.7°angular resolution for ENA measurement. The TOF unit combines a-15 kV acceleration high voltage with ultra-thin carbon foils to resolve H+,He2+,He+,O+,O2+and CO2+for ion measurement and to resolve H and O(≥16 amu group)for ENA measurement. Here we present the design principle and describe our ground calibration of the MINPA. | LingGao Kong AiBing Zhang Zhen Tian XiangZhi Zheng WenJing Wang Bin Liu Peter Wurz Daniele Piazza Adrian Etter Bin Su YaYa An JianJing Ding WenYa Li Yong Liu Lei Li YiRen Li Xu Tan YueQiang Sun | 2020 | Earth and Planetary Physics2020,4,4: | 4

Seed oil of Brucea javanica induces apoptosis through the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway in acute lymphocytic leukemia Jurkat cells显示文摘Brucea javanica oil emulsion(BJOE)has been used to treat tumor in China for more than 40 years. However, its components and effectiveness in the treatment of acute lymphocytic leukemia(ALL)and its mechanism of anti-cancer activity remain unknown. In the current study,high-performance liquid chromatography-evaporative light scattering detector(HPLC-ELSD)was used to analyze the components of BJOE.Then, the anti-leukemia effects of BJOE were examined both in vitro and in vivo using ALL Jurkat cells and the p388 mouse leukemia transplant model, respectively. The primary ALL leukemia cells were also used to confirm the antileukemia effects of BJOE.The apoptotic-related results indicated that BJOE induced apoptosis in Jurkat cells and were suggestive of intrinsic apoptotic induction. Moreover,BJOE inhibited Akt(protein kinase B)activation and upregulated its downstream targets p53 and Fox O1(forkhead box gene, group O-1)to initiate apoptosis. The activation of GSK3βwas also involved. Our findings demonstrate that BJOE has anti-leukemia effects on ALL cells and can induce apoptosis in Jurkat cells through the phosphoinositide3-kinase(PI3 K)/Akt signaling pathway. | ZHANG Hong YIN Shi-Liang WANG Li-Hui JIA Li-Na SU Guang-Yue LIU Xiao-Qing ZHOU Fan BRESLIN Peter MENG Ran LI Qi-Yi YANG Jing-Yu WU Chun-Fu | 2021 | Chinese Journal of Natural Medicines2021,19,8: | 2
All-optical controlled-NOT logic gate achieving directional asymmetric transmission based on metasurface doublet显示文摘Optical logic gates play important roles in all-optical logic circuits, which lie at the heart of the next-generation optical computing technology. However, the intrinsic contradiction between compactness and robustness hinders the development in this field. Here,we propose a simple design principle that can possess multiple-input-output states according to the incident circular polarization and direction based on the metasurface doublet, which enables controlled-NOT logic gates in infrared region. Therefore, the directional asymmetric electromagnetic transmission can be achieved. As a proof of concept,a spin-dependent Janus metasurface is designed and experimentally verified that four distinct images corresponding to four input states can be captured in the far-field.In addition, since the design method is derived from geometric optics,it can be easily applied to other spectra. We believe that the proposed metasurface doublet may empower many potential applications in chiral imaging, chiroptical spectroscopy and optical computing. | Yijia Huang Tianxiao Xiao Shuai Chen Zhengwei Xie Jie Zheng Jianqi Zhu Yarong Su Weidong Chen Ke Liu Mingjun Tang Peter Müller-Buschbaum Ling Li | 2023 | Opto-Electronic Advances2023,6,7: | 2
Photogenerated singlet oxygen over zeolite-confined carbon dots for shape selective catalysis显示文摘Singlet oxygen as an activated oxygen species played an important role in organic synthesis. Suitable catalyst for converting ubiquitous oxygen molecule to singlet oxygen under mild conditions has attracted a wide range of attention. Herein, carbon dots have been confined into mesopores of silicalite-1 nanocrystals framework and acted as active sites for generation of singlet oxygen. The high oxygen-adsorption capacity of zeolite nanocrystals facilitated the photocatalytic generation rate of singlet oxygen, outpacing the free-standing carbon dots for 14-fold. The integrated carbon dot-zeolite nanocrystal hybrid also exhibited a special size-dependent selectivity for organic synthesis by using the in situ formed and confined singlet oxygen as active oxygen species. | Qiu-Ying Yu Guang-Yao Zhai Tian-Lu Cui Hui Su Zhong-Hua Xue Jun-Jun Zhang Peter J.Pauzauskie Shin-ichi Hirano Xin-Hao Li Jie-Sheng Chen | 2019 | Science China Chemistry2019,62,4: | 2
Influence of longwall mining on the stability of gas wells in chain pillars显示文摘Longwall mining has a significant influence on gas wells located within longwall chain pillars.Subsurface subsidence and abutment pressure induced by longwall mining can cause excessive stresses and deformations in gas well casings. If the gas well casings are compromised or ruptured, natural gas could migrate into the mine workings, potentially causing a fire or explosion.By the current safety regulations, the gas wells in the chain pillars have to be either plugged or protected by adequate coal pillars. The current regulations for gas well pillar design are based on the 1957 Pennsylvania gas well pillar study. The study provided guidelines for gas well pillars by considering their support area and overburden depth as well as the location of the gas wells within the pillars. As the guidelines were developed for room-andpillar mining under shallow cover, they are no longer applicable to modern longwall coal mining, particularly, under deep cover.Gas well casing of failures have occurred even though the chain pillars for the gas wells met the requirements by the 1957 study. This study, conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health(NIOSH),presents seven cases of conventional gas wells penetrating through longwall chain pillars in the Pittsburgh Coal Seam. The study results indicate that overburden depth and pillar size are not the only determining factors for gas well stability. The other important factors include subsurface ground movement, overburden geology, weak floor,as well as the type of the construction of gas wells.Numerical modeling was used to model abutment pressure, subsurface deformations, and the response of gas well casings. The study demonstrated that numerical models are able to predict with reasonable accuracy the subsurface deformations in the overburden above, within, and below the chain pillars, and the potential location and modes of gas well failures, thereby providing a more quantifiable approach to assess the stability of the gas wells in longwall chain pillars. | Peter Zhang Heather Dougherty Daniel Su Jack Trackemas Berk Tulu | 2020 | International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2020,30,1: | 2

Integrated silicon ohotonic MEMS显示文摘Silicon photonics has emerged as a mature technology that is expected to play a key role in critical emerging applications, including very high data rate optical communications, distance sensing for autonomous vehicles,photonic-accelerated computing, and quantum information processing. The success of silicon photonics has been enabled by the unique combination of performance, high yield, and high-volume capacity that can only be achieved by standardizing manufacturing technology.Today, standardized silicon photonics technology platforms implemented by foundries provide access to optimized library components, including low-loss optical routing, fast modulation, continuous tuning,high-speed germanium photodiodes, and high-effciency optical and electrical interfaces. However, silicon's relatively weak electro-optic effects result in modulators with a significant footprint and thermo-optic tuning devices that require high power consumption, which are substantial impediments for very large-scale integration in silicon photonics.Microelectromechanical systems(MEMS)technology can enhance silicon photonics with building blocks that are compact,low-loss,broadband,fast and require very low power consumption. Here,we introduce a silicon photonic MEMS platform consisting of high-performance nano-opto-electromechanical devices fully integrated alongside standard silicon photonics foundry components, with wafer-level sealing for long-term reliability,flip-chip bonding to redistribution interposers, and fibre-array attachment for high port count optical and electrical interfacing. Our experimental demonstration of fundamental silicon photonic MEMS circuit elements, including power couplers, phase shifters and wavelength-division multiplexing devices using standardized technology lifts previous impediments to enable scaling to very large photonic integrated circuits for applications in telecommunications, neuromorphic computing, sensing, programmable photonics, and quantum computing. | Niels Quack Alain Yuji Takabayashi Hamed Sttari Pieirre Edinger Gaehun Jo Simon JBleker Carlos Errando-Herranz Kristinn BGylfason Frank Niklaus Umar Khan Peter Verheyen Arun Kumar Malik Jun Su Lee Moises Jezzini Padraic Morrissey Cleitus Antony Peter O'Brien Wim Bogaertso | 2023 | Microsystems & Nanoengineering2023,9,2: | 1
