1Current status of laparoscopy for the treatment of rectal cancer显示文摘Surgery for rectal cancer in complex and entails many challenges.While the laparoscopic approach in general and specific to colon cancer has been long proven to have short term benefits and to be oncologically safe,it is still a debatable topic for rectal cancer.The attempt to benefit rectal cancer patients with the known advantages of the laparoscopic approach while not compromising their oncologic outcome has led to the conduction of many studies during the past decade.Herein we describe our technique for laparoscopic proctectomy and assess the current literature dealing with short term outcomes,immediate oncologic measures(such as lymph node yield and specimen quality) and long term oncologic outcomes of laparoscopic rectal cancer surgery.We also briefly evaluate the evolving issues of robotic assisted rectal cancer surgery and the current innovations and trends in the minimally invasive approach to rectal cancer surgery.Noam Shussman Steven D Wexner 2014World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,41:13
2A Review of Colloid Transport in Fractured Rocks显示文摘Recent recognition of colloid and colloidassociated transport of strongly sorbing contaminants in fractured rocks highlights the importance of exploring the transport behavior of colloids under conditions prevailing in the field.The rapid transport of colloids through fractured rocks-as affected by the hydraulic properties of the flow system,the properties of fracture surface and the geochemical conditionshas not been sufficiently elucidated,and predictions of colloid transport through fractures have encountered difficulties,particularly at the field scale.This article reviews the current understanding of the mechanisms and modeling of colloid transport and retention in fractured rocks.Commonly used experimental techniques and approaches for conducting colloid transport experiments at different scales,ranging from the laboratory to the field scale,are summarized and commented upon.The importance of various interactions(e.g.,dissolution,colloid deposition,generation,mobilization and deposition of filling materials within fractures) between the flowing solution and the fracture walls(in many cases,with skin or coating on the host rock at the liquid-solid interface) has been stressed.Colloid transport through fractures of high heterogeneity has not yet been well understood and modeled at the field scale.Here,we summarize the current knowledge and understanding accumulated in the last two decades in regard to colloid and colloidassociated transport through fractures.Future research needs are also discussed.ZHANG Wei TANG Xiangyu WEISBROD Noam GUAN Zhuo 2012Journal of Mountain Science2012,9,6:12
3De novo exploration and self-guided learning of potentialenergy surfaces显示文摘Interatomic potential models based on machine learning(ML)are rapidly developing as tools for material simulations.However,because of their flexibility,they require large fitting databases that are normally created with substantial manual selection and tuning of reference configurations.Here,we show that ML potentials can be built in a largely automated fashion,exploring and fitting potential-energy surfaces from the beginning(de novo)within one and the same protocol.The key enabling step is the use of a configuration-averaged kernel metric that allows one to select the few most relevant and diverse structures at each step.The resulting potentials are accurate and robust for the wide range of configurations that occur during structure searching,despite only requiring a relatively small number of single-point DFT calculations on small unit cells.We apply the method to materials with diverse chemical nature and coordination environments,marking an important step toward the more routine application of ML potentials in physics,chemistry,and materials science.Noam Bernstein Gábor Csányi Volker L.Deringer 2019npj Computational Materials2019,,1:10

5Machine-learned interatomic potentials for alloys and alloy phase diagrams显示文摘We introduce machine-learned potentials for Ag-Pd to describe the energy of alloy configurations over a wide range of compositions.We compare two different approaches.Moment tensor potentials(MTPs)are polynomial-like functions of interatomic distances and angles.The Gaussian approximation potential(GAP)framework uses kernel regression,and we use the smooth overlap of atomic position(SOAP)representation of atomic neighborhoods that consist of a complete set of rotational and permutational invariants provided by the power spectrum of the spherical Fourier transform of the neighbor density.Both types of potentials give excellent accuracy for a wide range of compositions,competitive with the accuracy of cluster expansion,a benchmark for this system.While both models are able to describe small deformations away from the lattice positions,SOAP-GAP excels at transferability as shown by sensible transformation paths between configurations,and MTP allows,due to its lower computational cost,the calculation of compositional phase diagrams.Given the fact that both methods perform nearly as well as cluster expansion but yield off-lattice models,we expect them to open new avenues in computational materials modeling for alloys.Conrad W.Rosenbrock Konstantin Gubaev Alexander VShapeev Livia B.Pártay Noam Bernstein Gábor Csányi Gus L.W.Hart 2021npj Computational Materials2021,,1:5

13Cardiovascular disease risk factor profiles in children with celiac disease on gluten-free diets显示文摘AIM:To describe the cardiovascular disease(CVD)risk factors in a population of children with celiac disease(CD)on a gluten-free diet(GFD).METHODS:This cross-sectional multicenter study was performed at Schneider Children’s Medical Center of Israel(Petach Tiqva,Israel),and San Paolo Hospital(Milan,Italy).We enrolled 114 CD children in serologic remission,who were on a GFD for at least one year.At enrollment,anthropometric measurements,blood lipids and glucose were assessed,and compared to values at diagnosis.The homeostasis model assessment-estimated insulin resistance was calculated as a measure of insulin resistance.RESULTS:Three or more concomitant CVD risk factors[body mass index,waist circumference,low density lipoprotein(LDL)cholesterol,triglycerides,blood pressure and insulin resistance]were identified in 14%of CD subjects on a GFD.The most common CVD risk factors were high fasting triglycerides(34.8%),elevated blood pressure(29.4%),and high concentrations of calculated LDL cholesterol(24.1%).On a GFD,four children(3.5%)had insulin resistance.Fasting insulin and HOMA-IR were significantly higher in the Italian cohort compared to the Israeli cohort(P<0.001).Children on a GFD had an increased prevalence of borderline LDL cholesterol(24%)when compared to values(10%)at diagnosis(P=0.090).Trends towards increases in overweight(from 8.8%to 11.5%)and obesity(from 5.3%to 8.8%)were seen on a GFD.CONCLUSION:This report of insulin resistance and CVD risk factors in celiac children highlights the importance of CVD screening,and the need for dietary counseling targeting CVD prevention.Lorenzo Norsa Raanan Shamir Noam Zevit Elvira Verduci Corina Hartman Diana Ghisleni Enrica Riva Marcello Giovannini 2013World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,34:3
14Comparative transcriptome analyses shed light on carotenoid production and plastid development in melon fruit显示文摘Carotenoids,such asβ-carotene,accumulate in chromoplasts of various fleshy fruits,awarding them with colors,aromas,and nutrients.The Orange(CmOr)gene controlsβ-carotene accumulation in melon fruit by posttranslationally enhancing carotenogenesis and repressingβ-carotene turnover in chromoplasts.Carotenoid isomerase(CRTISO)isomerizes yellow prolycopene into red lycopene,a prerequisite for further metabolism intoβ-carotene.We comparatively analyzed the developing fruit transcriptomes of orange-colored melon and its two isogenic EMS-induced mutants,low-β(Cmor)and yofi(Cmcrtiso).The Cmor mutation in low-βcaused a major transcriptomic change in the mature fruit.In contrast,the Cmcrtiso mutation in yofi significantly changed the transcriptome only in early fruit developmental stages.These findings indicate that melon fruit transcriptome is primarily altered by changes in carotenoid metabolic flux and plastid conversion,but minimally by carotenoid composition in the ripe fruit.Clustering of the differentially expressed genes into functional groups revealed an association between fruit carotenoid metabolic flux with the maintenance of the photosynthetic apparatus in fruit chloroplasts.Moreover,large numbers of thylakoid localized photosynthetic genes were differentially expressed in low-β.CmOR family proteins were found to physically interact with light-harvesting chlorophyll a–b binding proteins,suggesting a new role of CmOR for chloroplast maintenance in melon fruit.This study brings more insights into the cellular and metabolic processes associated with fruit carotenoid accumulation in melon fruit and reveals a new maintenance mechanism of the photosynthetic apparatus for plastid development.Noam Chayut Hui Yuan Yuval Saar Yi Zheng Tianhu Sun Xuesong Zhou Anna Hermanns Elad Oren Adi Faigenboim Maixia Hui Zhangjun Fei Michael Mazourek Joseph Burger Yaakov Tadmor Li Li 2021Horticulture Research2021,8,1:3

16Specifc inflammatory osteoclast precursors induced during chronic inflammation give rise to highly active osteoclasts associated with inflammatory bone loss显示文摘Elevated osteoclast(OC)activity is a major contributor to inflammatory bone loss(IBL)during chronic inflammatory diseases.However,the specific OC precursors(OCPs)responding to inflammatory cues and the underlying mechanisms leading to IBL are poorly understood.We identified two distinct OCP subsets:Ly6C^(hi)CD11b^(hi) inflammatory OCPs(iOCPs)induced during chronic inflammation,and homeostatic Ly6C^(hi)CD11b^(lo)OCPs(hOCPs)which remained unchanged.Functional and proteomic characterization revealed that while iOCPs were rare and displayed low osteoclastogenic potential under normal conditions,they expanded during chronic inflammation and generated OCs with enhanced activity.In contrast,hOCPs were abundant and manifested high osteoclastogenic potential under normal conditions but generated OCs with low activity and were unresponsive to the inflammatory environment.Osteoclasts derived from iOCPs expressed higher levels of resorptive and metabolic proteins than those generated from hOCPs,highlighting that different osteoclast populations are formed by distinct precursors.We further identified the TNF-αand S100A8/A9 proteins as key regulators that control the iOCP response during chronic inflammation.Furthermore,we demonstrated that the response of iOCPs but not that of hOCPs was abrogated in tnf-α^(-/-)mice,in correlation with attenuated IBL.Our findings suggest a central role for iOCPs in IBL induction.iOCPs can serve as potential biomarkers for IBL detection and possibly as new therapeutic targets to combat IBL in a wide range of inflammatory conditions.Yaron Meirow Milena Jovanovic Yuval Zur Juliana Habib Daniele Filippo Colombo Nira Twaik Hadas Ashkenazi-Preiser Kerem Ben-Meir Ivan Mikula Jr. Or Reuven Guy Kariv Leonor Daniel Saja Baraghithy Yehuda Klein Jeroen Krijgsveld Noam Levaot Michal Baniyash 2022Bone Research2022,10,3:2

18Human-animal interactions and bat coronavirus spillover potential among rural residents in Southern China显示文摘Human interaction with animals has been implicated as a primary risk factor for several high impact zoonoses,including many bat-origin viral diseases.However the animal-to-human spillover events that lead to emerging diseases are rarely observed or clinically examined,and the link between specific interactions and spillover risk is poorly understood.To investigate this phenomenon,we conducted biological-behavioral surveillance among rural residents in Yunnan,Guangxi,and Guangdong districts of Southern China,where we have identified a number of SARS-related coronaviruses in bats.Serum samples were tested for four bat-borne coronaviruses using newly developed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays(ELISA).Survey data were used to characterize associations between human-animal contact and bat coronavirus spillover risk.A total of 1,596 residents were enrolled in the study from 2015 to 2017.Nine participants(0.6%)tested positive for bat coronaviruses.265(17%)participants reported severe acute respiratory infections(SARI)and/or influenza-like illness(ILI)symptoms in the past year,which were associated with poultry,carnivore,rodent/shrew,or bat contact,with variability by family income and district of residence.This study provides serological evidence of bat coronavirus spillover in rural communities in Southern China.The low seroprevalence observed in this study suggests that bat coronavirus spillover is a rare event.Nonetheless,this study highlights associations between human-animal interaction and zoonotic spillover risk.These findings can be used to support targeted biological behavioral surveillance in high-risk geographic areas in order to reduce the risk of zoonotic disease emergence.Li Hongying Mendelsohn Emma Zong Chen Zhang Wei Hagan Emily Wang Ning Li Shiyue Yan Hong Huang Huimin Zhu Guangjian Ross Noam Chmura Aleksei Terry Philip Fielder Mark Miller Maureen Shi Zhengli Daszak Peter 2019Biosafety and Health2019,1,2:2
