1Relationship between T-lymphocyte cytokine levels and sero-response to hepatitis B vaccines显示文摘AIM: To investigate the cellular defects by analyzing the (Th1/Th2) cytokine levels in vaccine responders and non-responders. METHODS: Peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) from responders and non-responders were stimulated with or with out recombinant HBsAg or PHA. Broad spectrum of cytokines viz (Th1) IFN-γ, IL-2, TNF-α, IL-12 and (Th2) IL-10, IL-4 were measured after in vitro stimulation with recombinant HBsAg and were compared with respective antibody titers. RESULTS: A significant decrease (P = 0.001) in Th1 and Th2 cytokines namely, IL-2, INF-γ, TNF-α and IL-10in non-responders was observed. The level of IL-4 was not significant between the three groups. Furthermore, despite a strong Th1 and Th2 cytokine response, the level of IL-12 was elevated in high-responders compared to other groups (P = 0.001) and demonstrated a positive correlation with anti-HBs titers and Th1 cytokine response. 2焊接方法对Ti-6Al-4V合金接头微观组织及拉伸和冲击性能的影响(英文)显示文摘钛合金由于具有高比强度、优越的耐腐蚀性和出色的耐热性等优良特性,已成功应用于航空航天、造船和化学工业。尽管钛合金具有合适的可焊性特点,但焊接方法极大地影响焊接接头性能。焊接过程中热循环将会影响焊接金属凝固、相转变和微观组织。采用钨电极惰性气体保护焊接(GTAW)、激光束焊接(LBW)和电子束焊接(EBW)方法制备Ti-6Al-4V合金的焊接接头。EBW焊接接头的强度高于GTAW和LBW接头的强度,但GTAW接头较其它两种接头具有较高的断裂韧性。焊接接头的拉伸和冲击性能与焊接金属的微观组织有关。T. 3Role of pomegranate and citrus fruit juices in colon cancer prevention显示文摘Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States.Recent studies prove that though chemotherapeutic agents are being used for the treatment of colon cancer,they become non-effective when the cancer progresses to an invasive stage.Since consumption of certain dietary agents has been linked with various cancers,fruit juices have been investigated for their consistently protective effect against colon cancer.The unique biochemical composition of fruit juices is responsible for their anticancer properties.In this review,the chemo-preventive effect of fruit juices such as pomegranate and citrus juices against colon cancer are discussed.For this purpose,the bioavailability,in vitro and in vivo effects of these fruit juices on colorectal cancer are highlighted.Moreover,there is a scarcity of studies involving human trials to estimate the preventive nature of these juices against colon cancer.This review will support the need for more preclinical tests with these crude juices and their constituents in different colorectal cancer cell lines and also some epidemiological studies in order to have a better understanding and promote pomegranate and citrus juices as crusaders against colon cancer.Saravana Kumar Jaganathan Muthu Vignesh Vellayappan Gayathri Narasimhan Eko Supriyanto 2014World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,16:6
4Silicon carbide resonant tuning fork for microsensing applications in high-temperature and high G-shock environments显示文摘We present the fabrication and testing of a silicon carbide(SiC)balanced mass double-ended tuning fork that survives harsh environments without compromising the device strain sensitivity and resolution bandwidth.The device features a material stack that survives corrosive environments and enables high-temperature operation.To perform high-temperature testing,a specialized setup was constructed that allows the tuning fork to be characterized using traditional silicon electronics.The tuning fork has been operated at 600 ℃ in the presence of dry steam for short durations.This tuning fork has also been tested to 64 000 G using a hard-launch,soft-catch shock implemented with a light gas gun.However,the device still has a strain sensitivity of 66 Hz/με and strain resolution of 0.045 με in a 10 kHz bandwidth.As such,this balanced-mass double-ended tuning fork can be used to create a variety of different sensors including strain gauges,accelerometers,gyroscopes,and pressure transducers.Given the adaptable fabrication process flow,this device could be useful to micro-electro-mechanical systems(MEMS) designers creating sensors for a variety of different applications.David R Myers Kan Bun Cheng Babak Jamshidi Robert G Azevedo Debbie G Senesky Li Chen Mehran Mehregany Muthu B J Wijesundara Albert P Pisano 2012Engineering Sciences2012,10,5:6

6Garcinol sensitizes human head and neck carcinoma to cisplatin in a xenograft mouse model despite downregulation of proliferative biomarkers显示文摘OBJECTIVE Platinum compounds such as cisplatin and carboplatin are frequently used as the first-line chemotherapy for the treatment of the head and neck squamous cell carcinoma(HNSCC).In the present study,we investigated whether garcinol,apolyisoprenylated benzophenone can chemosensitize HNSCC to cisplatin.METHODS The effect of garcinol and cisplatin on HNSCC was assessed by MTT,Western blotting,real time PCR,FACS,immunohistochemistry,DNA binding assay and xenograft mouse model.RESULTS We found that garcinol inhibited the viability of a panel of diverse HNSCC cell lines,enhanced the apoptotic effect of cisplatin,suppressed constitutive as well as cisplatin-induced NF-κB activation,and downregulated the expression of various oncogenic gene products(cyclin D1,Bcl-2,survivin and VEGF).In vivo study showed that administration of garcinol alone(0.5 mg·kg-1,ip five times/week)significantly suppressed the growth of the tumor,and this effect was further increased by cisplatin.Both the markers of proliferation index(Ki-67)and microvessel density(CD31)were downregulated in tumor tissues by the combination of cisplatin and garcinol.The pharmacokinetic results of garcinol indicated that good systemic exposure was achievable after ip administration of garcinol at 0.5and 2mg·kg-1 with mean peak concentration(cmax)of 1825.4 and 6635.7nmol·L-1 in the mouse serum,respectively.CONCLUSION Overall,our results suggest that garcinol can indeed potentiate the effects of cisplatin by negative regulation of various inflammatory and proliferative biomarkers.Feng Li Muthu K. 7搅拌头的外形和工艺参数对搅拌摩擦焊Al-Cu接头显微组织和力学性能的影响(英文)显示文摘在搅拌摩擦焊中,搅拌头的外形对材料流有很大的影响,特别是对具有不同屈服强度的异质材料。在铝和铜的异质焊接过程中,材料流行为复杂难懂,因此揭示流变行为和力学性能相当重要。选择了3种不同外形的搅拌头:螺纹搅拌头(WPP)、平锥形搅拌头(PTP)、锥针形搅拌头(TTP),研究搅拌头的外形对材料显微结构、显微硬度和拉伸性能的影响。采用光学显微镜、扫描电子显微镜、X-射线衍射和EDS表征材料的显微组织。在这3种不同外形的搅拌头中,PTP搅拌头能产生无缺陷搅拌区,并得到力学性能良好的接头,其屈服强度为101 MPa,拉伸强度为106 MPa,焊接效率为68%。然而,对于所有的不同外形的搅拌头,其显微硬度曲线大致相同,但都遵循波动趋势,这归因于铜颗粒的不均匀分布。优良的接头性能归因于无缺陷搅拌区的形成和弥散强化。M.FELIX XAVIER MUTHU V.JAYABALAN 2016Transactions of Nonferrous Metals Society of China2016,26,4:4

10Interconversion of two commonly used performance tools: An analysis of 5844 paired assessments in 1501 lung cancer patients显示文摘AIM To establish the Karnofsky performance status(KPS) categories which would facilitate the interconversion of the KPS scale to the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group(ECOG) performance status(PS) scale.METHODS This was a retrospective analysis of all patients attending the lung cancer clinic at a tertiary care center over a 5-year period(September 2009 to August 2014). All patients were assessed with both KPS and ECOG PS scales at each visit. Correlation between KPS and ECOG PS was assessed using Spearman's correlation coefficient. KPS categories equivalent to ECOG PS scores were compared using hit rate and weighted kappa(κw).RESULTS A total of 1501 patients were assessed over the study period, providing 5844 paired KPS and ECOG PS assessments. The study cohort had a mean(standard deviation; SD) age of 58.4(10.8) years, with the majority being current or ex-smokers(76.9%) and males(82.3%). Non-small cell lung cancer was the most common histological type(n = 1196, 79.7%) with the majority having advanced(stage ⅢB/Ⅳ) disease(83.4%). Mean baseline KPS and ECOG PS scores were 77.6(SD = 14.4) and 1.5(SD = 1) respectively. The most frequent KPS score was 80(29%), and the most frequent ECOG PS score was 1(43%). The overall correlation between KPS and ECOG PS was good(Spearman r =-0.84, P < 0.0001) but ranged from-0.727 to-0.972 between visits. KPS categories derived from our cohort [10-40(ECOG 4), 50-60(ECOG 3), 70(ECOG 2), 80-90(ECOG 1), 100(ECOG 0)] performed better [hit rate 78.1%, κw = 0.749(0.736-0.762) P < 0.0001] than those suggested in the past literature.CONCLUSION The current study provides the largest set of paired KPS-ECOG assessments to date. 11Nanofat: A therapeutic paradigm in regenerative medicine显示文摘Adipose tissue is a compact and well-organized tissue containing a heterogeneous cellular population of progenitor cells,including mesenchymal stromal cells.Due to its availability and accessibility,adipose tissue is considered a“stem cell depot.”Adipose tissue products possess anti-inflammatory,anti-fibrotic,antiapoptotic,and immunomodulatory effects.Nanofat,being a compact bundle of stem cells with regenerative and tissue remodeling potential,has potential in translational and regenerative medicine.Considering the wide range of applicability of its reconstructive and regenerative potential,the applications of nanofat can be used in various disciplines.Nanofat behaves on the line of adipose tissuederived mesenchymal stromal cells.At the site of injury,these stromal cells initiate a site-specific reparative response comprised of remodeling of the extracellular matrix,enhanced and sustained angiogenesis,and immune system modulation.These properties of stromal cells provide a platform for the usage of regenerative medicine principles in curbing various diseases.Details about nanofat,including various preparation methods,characterization,delivery methods,evidence on practical applications,and ethical concerns are included in this review.However,appropriate guidelines and preparation protocols for its optimal use in a wide range of clinical applications have yet to be standardized.Madhan Jeyaraman Sathish Muthu Shilpa Sharma Charan Ganta Rajni Ranjan Saurabh Kumar Jha 2021World Journal of Stem Cells2021,13,11:2
12Comparative effectiveness of adipose-derived mesenchymal stromal cells in the management of knee osteoarthritis:A meta-analysis显示文摘BACKGROUND Osteoarthritis(OA)is the most common joint disorder,is associated with an increasing socioeconomic impact owing to the ageing population.AIM To analyze and compare the efficacy and safety of bone-marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells(BM-MSCs)and adipose tissue-derived MSCs(AD-MSCs)in knee OA management from published randomized controlled trials(RCTs).METHODS Independent and duplicate electronic database searches were performed,including PubMed,EMBASE,Web of Science,and Cochrane Library,until August 2021 for RCTs that analyzed the efficacy and safety of AD-MSCs and BM-MSCs in the management of knee OA.The visual analog scale(VAS)score for pain,Western Ontario McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index(WOMAC),Lysholm score,Tegner score,magnetic resonance observation of cartilage repair tissue score,knee osteoarthritis outcome score(KOOS),and adverse events were analyzed.Analysis was performed on the R-platform using OpenMeta(Analyst)software.Twenty-one studies,involving 936 patients,were included.Only one study compared the two MSC sources without patient randomization;hence,the results of all included studies from both sources were pooled,and a comparative critical analysis was performed.RESULTS At six months,both AD-MSCs and BM-MSCs showed significant VAS improvement(P=0.015,P=0.012);this was inconsistent at 1 year for BM-MSCs(P<0.001,P=0.539),and AD-MSCs outperformed BM-MSCs compared to controls in measures such as WOMAC(P<0.001,P=0.541),Lysholm scores(P=0.006;P=0.933),and KOOS(P=0.002;P=0.012).BM-MSC-related procedures caused significant adverse events(P=0.003)compared to AD-MSCs(P=0.673).CONCLUSION Adipose tissue is superior to bone marrow because of its safety and consistent efficacy in improving pain and functional outcomes.Future trials are urgently warranted to validate our findings and reach a consensus on the ideal source of MSCs for managing knee OA.Sathish Muthu Sandesh C Patil Naveen Jeyaraman Madhan Jeyaraman Prakash Gangadaran Ramya Lakshmi Rajendran Eun Jung Oh Manish Khanna Ho Yun Chung Byeong-Cheol Ahn 2023World Journal of Orthopedics2023,14,1:2
