1Isolation and characterization of potential antibiotic producing actinomycetes from water and sediments of Lake Tana,Ethiopia显示文摘Objective:To isolate,evaluate and characterize potential antibiotic producing actinomycetes from water and sediments of Lake Tana,Ethiopia.Methods:A total of 31 strains of actinomycetes were isolated and tested against Gram positive and Gram negative bacterial strains by primary screening.In the primary screening.11 promising isolates were identified and subjected to solid state and submerged state fermentation methods to produce crude extracts.The fermented biomass was extracted by organic solvent extraction method and tested against bacterial strains by disc and agar well diffusion methods.The isolates were characterized by using morphological,physiological and biochemical methods.Results:The result obtained from agar well diffusion method was belter than disc diffusion method.The crude extract showed higher inhibition zone against Gram positive bacteria than Cram negative bacteria.One-way analysis of variance confirmed most of the crude extracts were statistically significant at 95%confidence interval.The minimum inhibitor)concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration of crude extracts were 1.65 mg/mL and 3.30 mg/mL against Staphylococcus aureus,and 1.84 mg/mL and 3.80 mg/mL against Escherichia coli respectively.The growth of aerial and substrate mycelium varied in different culture media used.Most of the isolates were able to hydrolysis starch and urea:able to survive at 5%concentration of sodium chloride:optimum temperature for their growth was 30°C.Conclusions:The results of the present study revealed that freshwater actinomycetes of Luke Tana appear to have immense potential as a source ol antibacterial compounds.Gebreselema Gebreyohannes Feleke Moges Samuel Sahil Nagappan Raja 2013Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2013,3,6:12
2Treatment outcomes for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis under DOTS-Plus:a systematic review and meta-analysis of published studies显示文摘Background:Anti-tuberculosis drug resistance is a major public health problem that threatens the progress made in tuberculosis care and control worldwide.Treatment success rates of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis(MDR-TB)is a key issue that cannot be ignored.There is a paucity of evidence that assessed studies on the treatment of MDR-TB,which focus on the effectiveness of the directly observed treatment,short-course(DOTS)-Plus program.Therefore,it is crucial to assess and summarize the overall treatment outcomes for MDR-TB patients enrolled in the DOTS-Plus program in recent years.The purpose of this study was to thus assess and summarize the available evidence for MDR-TB treatment outcomes under DOTS-Plus.Methods:A systematic review and meta-analysis of published literature was conducted.Original studies were identified using the databases MEDLINE®/PubMed®,Hinari,and Google Scholar.Heterogeneity across studies was assessed using the Cochran’s Q test and I2 statistic.Pooled estimates of treatment outcomes were computed using the random effect model.Results:Based on the 14 observational studies included in the meta-analysis,it was determined that 5047 patients reported treatment outcomes.Of these,the pooled prevalence,63.5%(95%CI:58.4-68.5%)successfully completed full treatment(cured or treatment completed)with a pooled cure rate of 55.6%,whereas 12.6%(95%CI:9.0-16.2%)of the patients died,14.2%(95%CI:11.6-16.8%)defaulted from therapy,and 7.6%(95%CI:5.6-9.7%)failed therapy.Overall 35.4%(95%CI:30-40.8%)of patients had unsuccessful treatment outcomes.An unsatisfactorily high percentage 43%(95%CI:32-54%)of unsuccessful treatment outcomes was observed among patients who were enrolled in standardized treatment regimens.Conclusion:This study revealed that patients with MDR-TB exhibited a very low treatment success rate compared to the World Health Organization 2015 target of at least 75 to 90%.The high default rate observed by conducting this literature review could possibly explain the spread of the MDR-TB strain in various populations.A better treatment success rate was observed among patients in individualized treatment regimens than in standardized ones.Conducting further individual-based meta-analysis is recommended to identify potential factors for defaulting treatment using large-scale and multi-center studies.Kelemu Tilahun Kibret Yonatan Moges Peter Memiah Sibhatu Biadgilign 2017Infectious Diseases of Poverty2017,6,1:4
3In vitro antibacterial activity of leaf extracts of Zehneria scabra and Ricinus communis against Escherichia coli and methicillin resistance Staphylococcus aureus显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the antibacterial activities of the crude leaves extracts of Zehneria scabra(Z.scabra) and Ricinus communis(R.communis) against Escherichia coli(E.coli).Staphylococcus aureus(S.aureus) and methicillin resistance 5.aureus.Methods:The crude powdered leaves of Z.scabra and R.communis were extracted successively by organic solvents in increasing polarity[benzene,chloroform:acetone(1:1),70%alcohol and distilled water].The antibacterial susceptibility of the crude leaves extracts of were tested against standard strains of E.coli(ATCC 25922) and S.aureus(ATCC 2923) and clinical isolates of E.coli,S.aureus and methicillin resistance 5.aureus using agar well diffusion method.Results:In Z.scabra and R.communis leaf extracts,the most sensitive standard strain was S.aureus with an inhibition zone of(14.00±1.20) mm and(15.90±2.13) mm,respectively.The minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) values of Z.scabra extracts against test organisms ranged from 1.95mg/mL for extract 3 in clinical and standard strains of 5.aureus to 250 mg/mL for extract 1 and 4in clinical and standard strains of E.coli.The MIC values of R.communis extracts against test organisms ranged from 1.95 mg/mL for extract 2 and 3 standard strains of S.aureus to 250 mg/mL for extract 1 in clinical isolate of E.coli.Most of the minimum bactericidal concentration and MIC values of plant extracts were almost similar particularly in R.communis,or minimum bactericidal concentration equal to one dilution factor less than MIC value of the extracts mainly in Z.scabra.Conclusions:The potency of plant extracts against test organisms were depend on different organic solvents used.Clinical isolate of bacterial pathogens showed less zones of diameter compared to the standard strains.Gram-positive had wide inhibition zones than Gram-negative bacteria.Further studies should be carried out to isolate the pure compounds and standardization of the methods of plant extracts for an in vitro testing.Bereket Abew Samuel Sahile Feleke Moges 2014Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2014,4,10:3

5Identification of system vulnerabilities in the Ethiopian electric power system显示文摘The Ethiopian Electric Power(EEP) has been operating and managing the national interconnected power system with dispersed and geographically isolated generators, a complex transmission system and loads. In recent years, with an increasing load demand due to rural electrification and industrialization, the Ethiopian power system has faced more frequent, widely spread and long lasting blackouts. To slash the occurrence of such incidents, identifying the system vulnerabilities is the first step in this direction. In this paper, the vulnerability assessment is performed using indices called active power performance index(PIp) and voltage performance index(PIv). These indices provide a direct means of comparing the relative severity of the different line outages on the system loads and voltage profiles. Accordingly, it is found that the most severe line outages are those lines that interconnect the high load centered(Addis Ababa and Central regions) with the rest of the regional power systems. 6Determinants of farmers’perception to invest in soil and water conservation technologies in the North-Western Highlands of Ethiopia显示文摘Soil erosion by water is a severe and continuous ecological problem in the north-western Highlands of Ethiopia.Limited perception of farmers to practice soil and water conservation(SWC)technologies is one of the major causes that have resulted accelerated soil erosion.Therefore,this paper examines the major determinants of farmers’perception to use and invest in SWC technologies in Ankasha District,north-western highlands of Ethiopia.A detailed field survey was carried out among 338 households,randomly selected from two rural sample kebeles(called villages here after).Descriptive statistics and logistic regression model were used to analyse the effects of multiple variables on farmers’perception.The results indicate that educational level of the respondents and their access to trainings were found to have a positive and very significant association(P<0.01)with farmers’perception.Likewise,land ownership,plot size,slope type,and extension contact positively and significantly influenced farmers’perception at 5%level of significance.On the other hand,the influence of respondents’age and plot distance from the homestead was found to be negative and significant(P<0.05).The overall results of this study indicate that the perception of farmers to invest in SWC technologies was highly determined by socioeconomic,institutional,attitudinal and biophysical factors.Thus,a better understanding of constrains that influence farmers'perception is very important while designing and implementing SWC technologies.Frequent contacts between farmers and extension agents and continues agricultural trainings are also needed to increase awareness of the impacts of SWC benefits.Desalew Meseret Moges Aklilu Amsalu Taye 2017International Soil and Water Conservation Research2017,5,1:2

9Tuberculosis care strategies and their economic consequences for patients: the missing link to end tuberculosis显示文摘Background:While investment in the development of Tuberculosis(TB)treatment strategies is essential,it cannot be assumed that the strategies are affordable for TB patients living in countries with high economic constraints.This study aimed to determine the economic consequences of directly observed therapy for TB patients.Methods:A cross-sectional cost-of-illness analysis was conducted between September to November 2015 among 576 randomly selected adult TB patients who were on directly observed treatment in 27 public health facilities in Addis Ababa,Ethiopia.Data were collected using interviewer-administered questionnaire adapted from the Tool to Estimate Patients’Costs.Mean and median costs,reduction of productivity,and household expenditure of TB patients were calculated and ways of coping costs captured.Eta(η),Odds ratio and p values were used to measure association between variables.Results:Of the total 576 TB patients enrolled,43%were smear-positive pulmonary TB(PTB),17%smear-negative PTB,37%Extra-PTB and 3%multi-drug resistant TB cases.Direct(Out-of-Pocket)mean and median costs of TB illness to patients were$123.0(SD=58.8)and$125.78(R=338.12),respectively,and indirect(loss income)mean and median costs were$54.26(SD=43.5)and$44.61(R=215.6),respectively.Mean and median total cost of TB illness to patient were$177.3(SD=78.7)and$177.1(R=461.8),respectively.The total cost had significant association with patient’s household income,residence,need for additional food,and primary income(P<0.05).Direct costs were catastrophic for 63%of TB patients,regardless of significant difference between gender(P=0.92)and type of TB cases(P=0.37).TB patients mean productivity and income reduced by 37 and 10%,respectively,compared with pre-treatment level,while mean household expenditure increased by 33%and working hours reduced by 78%due to TB illness.Income quartile categories were directly correlated with catastrophic costs(η=0.684).Conclusion:Despite the availability of free-of-charge anti-TB drugs,TB patients were suffering from out-of-pocket payments with catastrophic consequences,which in turn were hampering the efforts to end TB.TB patients in resource-limited countries deserve integrated patient-centered care with comprehensive health insurance coverage,financial incentives,and nutrition support to reduce catastrophic costs and retain them in care.Such countries should induce home-based directly observed therapy programs to reduce costs due to attending health facilities,intensify home treatment of critically-ill patients with impaired mobility,and reduce the spread of TB due to patients traveling to seek care.Belete Getahun Moges Wubie Getiye Dejenu Tsegahun Manyazewal 2016Infectious Diseases of Poverty2016,5,1:2
