| 1 | Combined antibacterial activity of stingless bee(Apis mellipodae)honey and garlic(Allium sativum)extracts against standard and clinical pathogenic bacteria显示文摘Objective:To investigate the synergic antibacterial activity of garlic and tazma honey against standard and clinical pathogenic bacteria.Methods:Antimicrobial activity of tazma honey,garlic and mixture of them against pathogenic bacteria were determined.Chloramphenicol and water were used as positive and negative controls,respectively.Minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC)and minimum bactericidal concentration of antimicrobial samples were determined using standard methods.Results:Inhibition zone of mixture of garlic and tazma honey against all tested pathogens was significantly(P≤0.05)greater than garlic and tazma honey alone.The diameter zone of inhibition ranged from(18±1)to(35±1)mm for mixture of garlic and tazma honey,(12±1)to(20±1)nun for tazma honey and(14±1)to(22±1)mm for garlic as compared with(10±1)to(30±1)mm for chloramphenicol.The combination of garlic and tazma honey(30-35 mm)was more significantly(P≤0.05)effective against Salmonella(NCTC 8385),Staphylococcus aureus(ATCC 25923),Lyesria moncytogenes(ATCC 19116)and Streptococcus pneumonia(ATCC 63).Results also showed considerable antimicrobial activity of garlic and tazma honey.MIC of mixture of garlic and tazma honey at 6.25%against total test bacteria was 88.9%.MIC of mixture of garlic and tazma honey at6.25%against Gram positive and negative were 100%and 83.33%,respectively.The bactericidal activities of garlic,tazma honey,and mixture of garlic and tazma honey against all pathogenic bacteria at 6.25%concentration were 66.6%,55.6%and 55.6%,respectively.Conclusions:This finding strongly supports the claim of the local community to use the combination of tazma honey and garlic for the treatment of different pathogenic bacterial infections.Therefore,garlic in combination with tazma honey can serve as an alternative natural antimicrobial drug for the treatment of pathogenic bacterial infections.Further in vivo study is recommended to come up with a comprehensive conclusion. | Berhanu Andualem | 2013 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2013,3,9: | 4 |

| 4 | Production of microbial medium from defatted brebra(Milletia ferruginea)seed flour to substitute commercial peptone agar显示文摘Objective:To investigate and optimize microbial media that substitute peptone agar using brebra seed defatted flour.Methods:Defatted process.inoculums preparation,evaluation of bacterial growth,preparation of cooked and hydrolyzed media and growth turbidity of tested bacteria were determined.Results:Two percent defatted flour was found to be suitable concentration for the growth of pathogenic bacteria:Escherichia coli(ATCC 25922)(E,coli),Pseudomonas aeruginosa(ATCC27853),Salmonella(NCTC 8385)and Shigella flexneri(ATCC 12022)(S.flexneri),while 3%defatted flour was suitable for Staphylococcus aureus(ATCC 25923)(S.aureus).E.coli(93±1)and S.flexneri(524±1)colony count were significantly(P≤0.05)greater in defatted flour without supplement than in supplemented medium.E.coli[(3.72×10~9±2)CFU/mL],S.aureus[(7.4×10~9±2)CFU/mL],S.flexneri[(4.03×10~9±2)CFU/mL]and Salmonella[(2.37×10~9±1)CFU/mL]in non-hydrolyzed sample were statistically(P≤0.05)greater than hydrolyzed one and commercial peptone agar.Colony count of Salmonella[(4.55≤10~9±3)CFU/mL],S.flexneri[(5.40≤10~9±3)CFU/mL]and Lyesria moncytogenes(ATCC 19116)[(5.4×10~9±3)CFU/mL]on raw defatted flour agar was significantly(P≤0.05)greater than cooked defatted flour and commercial peptone agar.Biomass of E.coli,S.aureus.Salmonella and Enterococcus faecalis in non-hydrolyzed defatted flour is highly increased over hydrolyzed defatted flour and commercial peptone broth.Conclusions:The defatted flour agar was found to be better microbial media or comparable with peptone agar.The substances in it can serve as sources of carbon,nitrogen,vitamins and minerals that are essential to support the growth of microorganisms without any supplements.Currently,all supplements of peptone agar are very expensive in the market. | Berhanu Andualem Amare Gessesse | 2013 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2013,3,10: | 2 |

| 9 | Application of GIS based analytical hierarchy process and multicriteria decision analysis methods to identify groundwater potential zones in Jedeb Watershed, Ethiopia显示文摘The hydrogeological situation of the study area requires the identification of groundwater potential.Remote sensing and satellite data have proven to be reliable tools for understanding various factors that affect groundwater occurrence and movement.This study employed weighted overlay analysis based on satellite imagery and secondary data to create a thematic map for characterizing groundwater potentials in the study area located within Abbay Basin,Ethiopia.Remote sensing(RS)and GIS-based Fuzzy-Analytical Hierarchy Process methods were utilized to classify groundwater potential(GWP)zones into five categories:Very good,good,moderate,poor,and very poor.The central and eastern parts of the study area were identified as having high(33.186%)and very high(2.351%)groundwater potentials,while the western part exhibited poor and very poor potential areas.The groundwater potential map delineated higher and moderate potentials,suitable for installing shallow and production bores.This research demonstrates the effectiveness of RS and GIS techniques for delineating groundwater potential zones,which can aid in the planning and management of groundwater resources.The research findings have the potential to contribute to the formulation of improved groundwater management programs in the study area. | Temesgen Mekuriaw Manderso Yitbarek Andualem Mekonnen Tadege Aragaw Worku | 2023 | Journal of Groundwater Science and Engineering2023,11,3: | 0 |
| 10 | Combining machine learning,space-time cloud restoration and phenology for farm-level wheat yield prediction显示文摘Though studies showed the potential of high-resolution optical sensors for crop yield prediction,several factors have limited their wider application.The main factors are obstruction of cloud,identification of phenology,demand for high computing infrastructure and the complexity of statistical methods.In this research,we created a novel approach by combining four methods.First,we implemented the cloud restoration algorithm called gapfill to restore missed Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI)values derived from Sentinel-2 sensor(S2)due to cloud obstruction.Second,we created square tiles as a solution for high computing infrastructure demand due to the use of high-resolution sensor.Third,we implemented gapfill following critical crop phenology stage.Fourth,observations from restored images combined with original(from cloud-free images)values and applied for winter wheat prediction.We applied seven base machine learning as well as two groups of super learning ensembles.The study successfully applied gapfill on high-resolution image to get good quality estimates for cloudy pixels.Consequently,yield prediction accuracy increased due to the incorporation of restored values in the regression process.Base models such as Generalized Linear Regression(GLM)and Random Forest(RF)showed improved capacity compared to other base and ensemble models.The two models revealed RMSE of 0.001 t/ha and 0.136 t/ha on the holdout group.The twomodels also revealed consistent and better performance using scatter plot analysis across three datasets.The approach developed is useful to predict wheat yield at field scale,which is a rarely available but vital in many developmental projects,using optical sensors. | Andualem Aklilu Tesfaye Daniel Osgood Berhane Gessesse Aweke | 2021 | Artificial Intelligence in Agriculture2021,,1: | 0 |
