1Correction of low corneal astigmatism in cataract surgery显示文摘· AIM: To evaluate and compare aspheric toric intraocular lens(IOL) implantation and aspheric monofocal IOL implantation with limbal relaxing incisions(LRI) to manage low corneal astigmatism(1.0-2.0 D) in cataract surgery.· METHODS: A prospective randomized comparative clinical study was performed. There were randomly recruited 102 eyes(102 patients) with cataracts associated with corneal astigmatism and divided into two groups. The first group received toric IOL implantation and the second one monofocal IOL implantation with peripheral corneal relaxing incisions. Outcomes considered were: visual acuity, postoperative residual astigmatism, endothelial cell count, the need for spectacles, and patient satisfaction. To determine the postoperative toric axis, all patients who underwent the toric IOL implantation were further evaluated using an OPD Scan III(Nidek Co, Japan). Follow-up lasted 6mo.· RESULTS: The mean uncorrected distance visual acuity(UCVA) and the best corrected visual acuity(BCVA) demonstrated statistically significant improvement after surgery in both groups. At the end of the follow-up the UCVA was statistically better in the patients with toric IOL implants compared to those patients who underwent implantation of monofocal IOL plus LRI. The mean residual refractive astigmatism was of 0.4 D for the toric IOL group and 1.1 D for the LRI group(P <0.01). No difference was observed in the postoperative endothelial cell count between the two groups.· CONCLUSION: The two surgical procedures demonstrated a significant decrease in refractive astigmatism. 4Osteoblasts are inherently programmed to repel sensory innervation显示文摘Tissue innervation is a complex process controlled by the expression profile of signaling molecules secreted by tissue-resident cells that dictate the growth and guidance of axons.Sensory innervation is part of the neuronal network of the bone tissue with a defined spatiotemporal occurrence during bone development.Yet,the current understanding of the mechanisms regulating the map of sensory innervation in the bone tissue is still limited.Here,we demonstrated that differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells to osteoblasts leads to a marked impairment of their ability to promote axonal growth,evidenced under sensory neurons and osteoblastic-lineage cells crosstalk.The mechanisms by which osteoblast lineage cells provide this nonpermissive environment for axons include paracrine-induced repulsion and loss of neurotrophic factors expression.We identified a drastic reduction of NGF and BDNF production and stimulation of Sema3A,Wnt4;and Shh expression culminating at late stage of OB differentiation.We noted a correlation between Shh expression profile,OB differentiation stages,and OB-mediated axonal repulsion.Blockade of Shh activity and signaling reversed the repulsive action of osteoblasts on sensory axons.Finally,to strengthen our model,we localized the expression of Shh by osteoblasts in bone tissue.Overall,our findings provide evidence that the signaling profile associated with osteoblast phenotype differentiating program can regulate the patterning of sensory innervation,and highlight osteoblast-derived Shh as an essential player in this cue-induced regulation.Luis Leitao Estrela Neto Francisco Conceicao Ana Monteiro Marina Couto Cecilia JAlves Daniela MSousa Meriem Lamghari 2020Bone Research2020,8,3:4
5Effects of dust,soiling,aging,and weather conditions on photovoltaic system performances in a Saharan environment—Case study in Algeria显示文摘Solar photovoltaic(PV)power represents one of the most promising future sources of energy in the world.Considered the cleanest form of energy,extensive research is being undertaken to widen its use.Notably,mega projects are being considered for installation in the Middle East and North Africa(MENA)region because of its high solar potential,with hopes of eventually feeding Europe from the PV electricity generated in this region and transported through high voltage direct current(DC)lines.However,current implementation of PV systems has shown that their reliability and efficiency depend upon surrounding environmental factors,such as the ambient temperature,wind,and rainfall,as well as soiling,pollution,and aging.The aim of this study was to investigate,through experimental tests,the effects of such factors on the power output of a grid connected PV station.The results showed that the output power and efficiency are deeply affected by various environmental factors,which are weather dependent.These findings may help us develop appropriate solutions to overcome these drawbacks.Meriem Memiche Chaima Bouzian Ayoub Benzahia Ammar Moussi 2020Global Energy Interconnection2020,3,1:4
6Transient micro-elastography:A novel non-invasive approach to measure liver stiffness in mice显示文摘AIM:To develop and validate a transient micro-elastography device to measure liver stiffness(LS) in mice.METHODS:A novel transient micro-elastography(TME) device,dedicated to LS measurements in mice with a range of measurement from 1-170 kPa,was developed using an optimized vibration frequency of 300 Hz and a 2 mm piston.The novel probe was validated in a classical fibrosis model(CCl4) and in a transgenic murine model of systemic amyloidosis.RESULTS:TME could be successfully performed in control mice below the xiphoid cartilage,with a mean LS of 4.4 ± 1.3 kPa,a mean success rate of 88%,and an excellent intra-observer agreement(0.98).Treatment with CCl4 over seven weeks drastically increased LS as compared to controls(18.2 ± 3.7 kPa vs 3.6 ± 1.2 kPa).Moreover,fibrosis stage was highly correlated with LS(Spearman coefficient = 0.88,P < 0.01).In the amyloidosis model,much higher LS values were obtained,reaching maximum values of > 150 kPa.LS significantly correlated with the amyloidosis index(0.93,P < 0.0001) and the plasma concentration of mutant hapoA-□(0.62,P < 0.005).CONCLUSION:Here,we have established the first non-invasive approach to measure LS in mice,and have successfully validated it in two murine models of high LS.Cécile Bastard Matteo R Bosisio Michèle Chabert Athina D Kalopissis Meriem Mahrouf-Yorgov Hélène Gilgenkrantz Sebastian Mueller Laurent Sandrin 2011World Journal of Gastroenterology2011,17,8:4
7Protic ionic liquids/poly(vinylidene fluoride) composite membranes for fuel cell application显示文摘Poly(vinylidene fluoride), PVDF, membranes have attracted considerable attention as polymer electrolytes for fuel cells. This study explores the effect of solvent on the spherulite size and the crystallinity of the polymeric membranes. Based on Hansen solubility parameters theory, the mixture of DMC and DMSO was selected among a dozen of solvents for the preparation of PVDF membranes by thermally induced phase separation. The addition of two protic ionic liquids(PILs), bis(2-ethyl hexyl) ammonium hydrogen phosphate [EHNH_2][H_2PO_4], and imidazolium hexanoate [Im][Hex] to PVDF membranes at concentrations(10% < wP IL< 50%) has been investigated by SEM, FTIR, DSC, TGA, EIS, and DMA. The inclusion of ionic liquids into the polymer matrix influences structural parameters(degree of crystallinity and electroactive phases), thermal stability, proton conductivity and mechanical properties of the membranes. The membranes become transparent regardless type of ionic liquid employed. A small amount of ionic liquids increases the degree of crystallinity and facilitates the production of polar β and γ crystals. The proton conductivity mechanism(Grotthuss) is dependent on the ionic liquid structure(due to its selforganization in water) and the content in the PVDF membrane, as well as the membrane water uptake.Different behavior has been observed for the two ionic liquids, which stresses the challenge on selecting an appropriate cation and anion combination. The obtained composite membranes exhibited excellent mechanical performance and reduced elastic modulus, with respect to the pure polymer matrix. 8A PV powered shunt active power filter for power quality improvement显示文摘This paper deals with power quality improvement using a three-phase active power filter(APF) connected to a PV power system. A direct power control(DPC) approach is proposed to eliminate harmonic current caused by any nonlinear loads and at the same time guarantees the delivery of a part of the load request from the same PV source. A boost converter is used for maximum power point(MPP) tracking purposes under various climate conditions through a fuzzy logic technique. The suggested study is tested under a MATLAB/Simulink environment. 10Chemical analysis,antimicrobial and anti-oxidative properties of Daucus gracilis essential oil and its mechanism of action显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the essential oils(EO) composition,antimicrobial and antioxidant power of a local plant,Daucus gracilis(D.gracilis).Methods:The aerial parts of D.gracilis were subjected to hydro distillation by a Clevenger apparatus type to obtain the EO which had been analyzed by gas chromatography and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry,and screened for antimicrobial activity against five bacteria and three fungi by agar diffusion method.The mechanism of action of the EO was determined on the susceptible strains by both of time kill assay and lysis experience.The minimal inhibitory concentrations were determined by agar macrodilution and micro-dilution methods.Anti-oxidative properties of the EO were also studied by free diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging and reducing power techniques.Results:The EO yielded 0.68(v/w).The chemical analysis presented two dominant constituents which were the elemicin(35.3%) and the geranyl acetate(26.8%).D.gracilis EO inhibited the growth of Bacillus cereus and Proteus mirabilis significantly with minimal inhibitory concentrations of 17.15 μg/mL by the agar dilution method and57.05 μg/mL and 114.1 μg/mL,respectively by liquid micro-dilution.A remarkable decrease in a survival rate as well as in the absorbance in 260 nm was recorded,which suggested that the cytoplasm membrane was one of the targets of the EO.The EO showed,also,important anti-oxidative effects with an IC50 of 0.002 mg/mL and a dosedependent reducing power.Conclusions:D.gracilis EO showed potent antimicrobial and anti-oxidative activities and had acted on the cytoplasm membrane.These activities could be exploited in the food industry for food preservation.Meriem El Kolli Hocine Laouer Hayet El Kolli Salah Akkal Farida Sahli 2016Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2016,6,1:2
11Effect of cation(Li^+, Na^+, K^+, Rb^+, Cs^+) in aqueous electrolyte on the electrochemical redox of Prussian blue analogue(PBA) cathodes显示文摘Prussian blue analogue(PBA)material is a promising cathode for applications in Na-ion and K-ion batteries which can support high c-rates for charge and discharge.In this study,the material of composition[K2 CuIIFeII(CN)6]was synthesized and its structural and electrochemical redox behavior was investigated with 5 different alkali insertion cations(Li^+,Na^+,K^+,Rb^+,Cs^+).Galvanostatic measurements indicate that the redox potential strongly depends on the ionic radius of the inserted cation.The redox potential varies by 400 m V between using Li^+(0.79A)or Cs^+(1.73A)in the electrolyte.The underlying modification of the Fe2^+/Fe3^+redox potential in PBA is proposed to be due to the weakening of the Fe–C bond in the material.This hypothesis is supported by XRD measurements which reveal that the lattice parameter of the de-intercalated host structure follows the same trend of monotonic increase with the cation size.The relatively minor volume changes accompanying the redox(1.2%–2.4%)allow the PBA to accommodate differently sized cations,although the structural hindrances are quite pronounced at high c-rates for the larger ones(Rb^+and Cs^+).Cycle aging studies indicate that the minimum capacity fade rate is observed in case of K^+ and Rb^+ containing electrolyte.The peak intensity corresponding to the[220]crystallographic plane varies depending on the state of charge of PBA,since this plane contains the insertion cations.Owing to the sensitivity of the redox potential to the insertion cation coupled with the observed fast ion-exchange ability,the PBA material may find additional analytical applications such as ion sensing or filtration devices.Satyajit Phadke Roman Mysyk Meriem Anouti 2020Journal of Energy Chemistry2020,29,1:2
12Spatial and social interaction in medieval Algerian mosques: a morphological analysis using space syntax显示文摘Medieval mosques in Algeria represent an important architectural heritage that deserves to be identifed,studied and preserved.Considering the period spanning the 7th to 15th centuries,this study investigated medieval mosques in Algeria,spatially and socially,to identify the architectural genotype and to establish whether such mosques present the same topological model that governs their spatial properties.This study adopted a new approach to spatial analysis of mosques that could be applied to improve understanding of other religious buildings.Space syntax as an architectural analysis tool can be used as a qualitative method for drawing justifed graphs and comparing them visually and quantitatively,calculating syntactic measures and integrating visibility graph analysis to identify spatial types,reveal architectural genotypes and explain social logic.The fndings demonstrate how space syntax with topological analysis and syntactic measures could be used to provide new understanding for architects,students and all those interested in heritage,architecture and design,by uncovering hidden structures and revealing the social logic embodied in the spatial confgurations of mosques.Meriem Redjem Said Mazouz 2022Built Heritage2022,6,2:2

20Sympathetic activity in breast cancer and metastasis:partners in crime显示文摘The vast majority of patients with advanced breast cancer present skeletal complications that severely compromise their quality of life.Breast cancer cells are characterized by a strong tropism to the bone niche.After engraftment and colonization of bone,breast cancer cells interact with native bone cells to hinder the normal bone remodeling process and establish an osteolytic“metastatic vicious cycle”.The sympathetic nervous system has emerged in recent years as an important modulator of breast cancer progression and metastasis,potentiating and accelerating the onset of the vicious cycle and leading to extensive bone degradation.Furthermore,sympathetic neurotransmitters and their cognate receptors have been shown to promote several hallmarks of breast cancer,such as proliferation,angiogenesis,immune escape,and invasion of the extracellular matrix.In this review,we assembled the current knowledge concerning the complex interactions that take place in the tumor microenvironment,with a special emphasis on sympathetic modulation of breast cancer cells and stromal cells.Notably,the differential action of epinephrine and norepinephrine,through eitherα-orβ-adrenergic receptors,on breast cancer progression prompts careful consideration when designing new therapeutic options.In addition,the contribution of sympathetic innervation to the formation of bone metastatic foci is highlighted.In particular,we address the remarkable ability of adrenergic signaling to condition the native bone remodeling process and modulate the bone vasculature,driving breast cancer cell engraftment in the bone niche.Finally,clinical perspectives and developments on the use ofβ-adrenergic receptor inhibitors for breast cancer management and treatment are discussed.Francisco Conceição Daniela M.Sousa Joana Paredes Meriem Lamghari 2021Bone Research2021,9,1:1
