| 1 | Review of sustainability, pretreatment, and engineering considerations of asphalt modifiers from the industrial solid wastes显示文摘The escalating mass of solid waste at an overwhelming sum requires a global attention to strive for efficient waste management and to outsource the ecological treatments. The asphalt pavement industry that consumes a vast scale of natural resources while contributing to thermal and greenhouse emissions is viewed as a high potential alternative for the application of solid waste as asphalt modifier and substantial waste reduction. In efforts to urge for cleaner and greener asphalt production, a growing trend towards usage of solid waste as a renewable material is paving a sustainable future for the asphalt pavement industry. The economic options of incorporating solid waste into the asphaltic mixture coupled with proven effective performances are a green and cost-effective alternative to mitigate various pavement distresses. Various options either as coarse or fine aggregates and as fillers in powder, ash, or fibre form are to stimulate further research interest to incorporate a diversified range of solid waste into the asphalt binder and asphalt mixture. Prior to incorporating solid waste into the asphaltic mixture through the selected options, prerequisite tests in addressing engineering limitations due to the unknown properties of solid waste are reviewed. The concerns on environmental impact are given heavy metals leaching possibilities into water sources are addressed by Toxicity Characterization Leaching Procedure test, to leverage further the systematic reuse of solid waste in steering towards the cleaner production of the asphalt mixture. The microcosmic traits of solid waste namely surface morphology, mineralogical composition and chemical composition are summarized based on the usage of Scanning Electron Microscope, X-Ray Diffraction, and X-Ray Fluorescence, respectively. | 2 | Regulatory control of the Na-Cl co-transporter NCC and its therapeutic potential for hypertension显示文摘Hypertension is the largest risk factor for cardiovascular disease,the leading cause of mortality worldwide.As blood pressure regulation is influenced by multiple physiological systems,hypertension cannot be attributed to a single identifiable etiology.Three decades of research into Mendelian forms of hypertension implicated alterations in the renal tubular sodium handling,particularly the distal convoluted tubule(DCT)-native,thiazide-sensitive Na-Cl cotransporter(NCC).Altered functions of the NCC have shown to have profound effects on blood pressure regulation as illustrated by the over activation and inactivation of the NCC in Gordon’s and Gitelman syndromes respectively.Substantial progress has uncovered multiple factors that affect the expression and activity of the NCC.In particular,NCC activity is controlled by phosphorylation/dephosphorylation,and NCC expression is facilitated by glycosylation and negatively regulated by ubiquitination.Studies have even found parvalbumin to be an unexpected regulator of the NCC.In recent years,there have been considerable advances in our understanding of NCC control mechanisms,particularly via the pathway containing the with-no-lysine[K](WNK)and its downstream target kinases,SPS/Ste20-related proline-alanine-rich kinase(SPAK)and oxidative stress responsive 1(OSR1),which has led to the discovery of novel inhibitory molecules.This review summarizes the currently reported regulatory mechanisms of the NCC and discusses their potential as therapeutic targets for treating hypertension. | Nur Farah Meor Azlan Maarten P.Koeners Jinwei Zhang | 2021 | Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B2021,11,5: | 6 |
| 3 | WNK-SPAK/OSR1-NCC kinase signaling pathway as a novel target for the treatment of salt-sensitive hypertension显示文摘Hypertension is the most prevalent health condition worldwide,affecting~1 billion people.Gordon’s syndrome is a form of secondary hypertension that can arise due to a number of possible mutations in key genes that encode proteins in a pathway containing the With No Lysine[K](WNK)and its downstream target kinases,SPS/Ste20-related proline-alanine-rich kinase(SPAK)and oxidative stress responsive kinase 1(OSR1).This pathway regulates the activity of the thiazide-sensitive sodium chloride cotransporter(NCC),which is responsible for NaCl reabsorption in the distal nephron.Therefore,mutations in genes encoding proteins that regulate the NCC proteins disrupt ion homeostasis and cause hypertension by increasing NaCl reabsorption.Thiazide diuretics are currently the main treatment option for Gordon’s syndrome.However,they have a number of side effects,and chronic usage can lead to compensatory adaptations in the nephron that counteract their action.Therefore,recent research has focused on developing novel inhibitory molecules that inhibit components of the WNK-SPAK/OSR1-NCC pathway,thereby reducing NaCl reabsorption and restoring normal blood pressure.In this review we provide an overview of the currently reported molecular inhibitors of the WNK-SPAK/OSR1-NCC pathway and discuss their potential as treatment options for Gordon’s syndrome. | Archie Brown Nur Farah Meor Azlan Zhijuan Wu Jinwei Zhang | 2021 | Acta Pharmacologica Sinica2021,42,4: | 2 |
| 4 | Evaluation of asphalt mixture behavior incorporating warm mix additives and reclaimed asphalt pavement显示文摘Incorporation of warm mix asphalt(WMA) and reclaimed asphalt pavement(RAP) has benefited the asphalt industry in many ways such as reducing the demand for virgin materials, lowering energy requirement during the asphalt production and construction, in addition to reducing greenhouse-gas emissions. This study evaluated the effects of Evotherm~ and RH-WMA and RAP on mixtures' behavior in terms of the compaction energy index(CEI), indirect tensile strength(ITS) and resilient modulus. The results showed that warm mix additives reduced the CEI, ITS and resilient modulus; while RAP increased the corresponding values. Statistical analysis showed that mixtures incorporating Evotherm~and RAP had significant effects on CEI, while the effects of RH-WMA on the corresponding value were found to be statistically insignificant. General Linear Model showed that Evotherm~, RAP and RH-WMA exhibited no significant effects on the ITS and resilient modulus. The one-way analysis of variance showed that Evotherm~ influenced mixture behavior significantly, while RAP and RH-WMA effects were found to be statistically insignificant. | 19 | Amorphous particle deposition and product quality under different conditions in a spray dryer显示文摘Deposition of amorphous particles, as a prevalent problem particularly in the spray drying of fruit and vegetable juices, is due to low-molecular- weight sugars and is strongly dependent on the condition of the particles upon collision with the dryer wall. This paper investigates the condition of the amorphous particles impacting the wall at different drying conditions with the aim of elucidating the deposition mechanism and physical phenomena in the drying chamber. A model sucrose-maltodextrin solution was used to represent the low-molecular-weight sugar. Particle deposits were collected on sampling plates placed inside the dryer for analyses of moisture content, particle rigidity (using SEM) and size distribution. Moisture content was adopted as a general indicator of stickiness. Product particles collected at the bottom of the experimental dryer were found to have higher moisture than particle deposits on samplers inside the dryer. Moisture content profile in the dryer shows that apart from the atomizer region, where particles are relatively wet, particle deposits at other regions exhibit similar lower moisture content. At the highest temperature adopted in the experiments, particles became rubbery suggesting liquid-bridge formation as the dominant deposition mechanism. Further analysis on particles size distribution reveals a particle segregation mechanism whereby smaller particles follow preferentially to the central air stream while larger particles tend to re-circulate in the chamber, as predicted in past CFD simulation.
