| 1 | Dietary and socio-economic factors in relation to Helicobacter pylori re-infection显示文摘AIM:To examine if dietary and socio-economic factors contribute to Helicobacter pylori(H pylori)re-infection. METHODS:The population of patients consisted of subjects in whom H pylori infection had been successfully treated in the past.Patients were divided into two groups:Ⅰ-examined group(111 persons with H pylori re-infection)andⅡ-control group(175 persons who had not been re-infected).The respondents were interviewed retrospectively on their dietary habits and socio-economic factors. RESULTS:A statistically significant lower frequency of fermented dairy products(P<0.0001),vegetables (P=0.02),and fruit(P=0.008)consumption was noted among patients with H pylori re-infection as compared to those who had not been re-infected. | 12 | Effect of scots pine forest management on soil properties and carabid beetle occurrence under post-fire environmental conditions——a case study from Central Europe显示文摘Background: Fires have a fundamental impact on phytocoenoses and, depending on the size of the fire, can have a positive or negative effect. The role of fires in the formation of the species composition of plants, restoration of stands and changes in soil properties is well studied. However, the long-term relationship between forest management methods, soil properties and epigeic entomofauna assemblages in post-fire areas is still not clear. The effects of Scots pine stand management methods on biochemical soil properties and ground beetle assemblages in the largest post-fire area in Central Europe after the second World were investigated. The study was conducted in the Rudy Raciborskie Forest district in southern Poland. The soil properties and epigeic beetle community structure were analysed. The research covered areas with natural and artificial pine regeneration, which were subjected to various care treatments.Results: The tendency for higher accumulations of organic matter in the soil of stands that underwent natural regeneration was proven. The stimulating role of soil organic carbon on the activity of dehydrogenases in the soil of naturally renewed areas with silvicultural treatment(NRAT) was noted. Regardless of the manner of stand regeneration, the activity of β-glucosidase was higher in the areas in which breeding treatments were practised.Furthermore, managed forest stands presented a higher abundance of carabid beetles than stands without treatment practices. Thirteen epigeic beetle species from the families Geotrupidae, Carabidae, Curculionidae,Cerambycidae and Silphidae were captured, with beetles from the first two families being the most numerous. Rare epigeal carabid species in the fauna of Poland and Europe, such as Carabus glabratus(Paykull) and Carabus auronitens Fabr., found appropriate habitat conditions for survival in the post-fire areas. Compared with the other areas, in the NRAT area, there were better stand and soil properties and more features conducive to epigeic entomofaunal occurrences. The highest post-fire content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons was recorded in the soils of the sites that underwent artificial regeneration. The results suggest that preparing the soil before the introduction of new vegetation affects the amount of aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs).Conclusions: The better performance of the NRAT stand draws attention to the positive aspects of the use of natural regeneration, both from ecological and economic perspectives. The effects of forest management on the amount of soil organic matter after fires have been proven. The natural regeneration of stands was conducive to the accumulation of organic matter. The enzymatic activity of soils is influenced by the renewal method and forest management strategy. | 13 | Feeding Bacillus-based probiotics to gestating and lactating sows is an efficient method for improving immunity,gut functional status and biofilm formation by probiotic bacteria in piglets at weaning显示文摘The effects of dietary probiotic supplementation with viable Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens spores on sow performance,immunity,gut functional status and biofilm formation by probiotic bacteria in piglets at weaning were investigated.Ninety-six sows reared in a continuous farrowing system for one full cycle were fed gestation diets during the first 90 d of pregnancy and lactation diets until the end of lactation.The sows were fed a basal diet without probiotics(control;n=48)or a diet supplemented with viable spores(1.1×10^(9)CFU/kg of feed)(probiotic;n=48).At 7 d of age,sucking piglets(n=12/group)were provided prestarter creep feed until weaning at 28 d of age.The piglets in the probiotic group were supplemented with the same probiotic and dosage as their dams.Blood and colostrum collected from sows and ileal tissues collected from piglets on the day of weaning were used for analyses.Probiotics increased the weight of piglets(P=0.077),improved the weaning weight(P=0.039)and increased both the total creep feed consumption(P=0.027)and litter gain(P=0.011).Probiotics also improved the faecal score in the second(P=0.013)week of life.The immunoglobulin G(IgG)concentrations in sow blood at farrowing and the IgM concentrations in piglet blood at weaning were higher in the probiotic group than in the control group(P=0.046).The piglets from the probiotic-treated sows showed a higher IgM concentration in the ileal mucosa(P=0.050)and a lower IgG concentration in the ileal mucosa(P=0.021)compared with the piglets from control sows.The probiotic-treated piglets had a thicker ileal mucosa(P=0.012)due to the presence of longer villi and larger Peyer's patches(P<0.001).B.subtilis and B.amyloliquefaciens were detected in the probiotic-treated piglets but not the control piglets;these bacteria were present in the digesta and villus structures and formed structures resembling biofilms.Overall,Bacillus-based probiotic supplementation improves the health indices of sows and their piglets. | PawełKonieczka Karolina Ferenc Jens NJørgensen Lea HBHansen Romuald Zabielski Jarosław Olszewski Zdzisław Gajewski Magdalena Mazur-Kusnirek Dominika Szkopek Natalia Szyrynska Krzysztof Lipinski | 2023 | Animal Nutrition2023,,2: | 0 |
| 14 | Use of ebselen as a neuroprotective agent in rat spinal cord subjected to traumatic injury显示文摘Spinal cord injury(SCI) causes disturbances of motor skills.Free radicals have been shown to be essential for the development of spinal cord trauma.Despite some progress,until now no effective pharmacological therapies against SCI have been verified.The purpose of our experiment was to investigate the neuroprotective effects of ebselen on experimental SCI.Twenty-two rats subjected to SCI were randomly subjected to SCI with no further treatment(n = 10) or intragastric administration of ebselen(10 mg/kg) immediately and 24 hours after SCI.Behavioral changes were assessed using the Basso,Beattie,and Bresnahan locomotor scale and footprint test during 12 weeks after SCI.Histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses of spinal cords and brains were performed at 12 weeks after SCI.Magnetic resonance imaging analysis of spinal cords was also performed at 12 weeks after SCI.Rats treated with ebselen presented only limited neurobehavioral progress as well as reduced spinal cord injuries compared with the control group,namely length of lesions(cysts/scars)visualized histopathologically in the spinal cord sections was less but cavity area was very similar.The same pattern was found in T2-weighted magnetic resonance images(cavities) and diffusion-weighted images(scars).The number of FluoroGold retrogradely labeled neurons in brain stem and motor cortex was several-fold higher in ebselen-treated rats than in the control group.The findings suggest that ebselen has only limited neuroprotective effects on injured spinal cord.All exprimental procedures were approved by the Local Animal Ethics Committee for Experiments on Animals in Katowice(Katowice,Poland)(approval No.19/2009). | Wojciech ?lusarczyk Edyta Olakowska Magdalena Larysz-Brysz Izabella Woszczycka-Korczyńska Daria Gendosz de Carrillo W?adys?aw P.W?glarz Joanna Lewin-Kowalik Wies?aw Marcol | 2019 | Neural Regeneration Research2019,14,7: | 0 |
