3Application of response surface methodology(RSM) for optimization of leaching parameters for ash reduction from low-grade coal显示文摘Coal is the world's most abundant energy source because of its abundance and relatively low cost. Due to the scarcity in the supply of high-grade coal, it is necessary to use low-grade coal for fulfilling energy demands of modern civilization. However, due to its high ash and moisture content, low-grade coal exerts the substantial impact on their consumption like pyrolysis, liquefaction, gasification and combustion process. The present research aimed to develop the efficient technique for the production of clean coal by optimizing the operating parameters with the help of response surface methodology. The effect of three independent variables such as hydrofluoric acid(HF) concentration(10–20% by volume), temperature(60–100 °C), and time(90–180 min), for ash reduction from the low-grade coal was investigated. A quadratic model was proposed to correlate the independent variables for maximum ash reduction at the optimum process condition by using central composite design(CCD) method. The study reveals that HF concentration was the most effective parameter for ash reduction in comparison with time and temperature. It may be due to the higher F-statistics value for HF concentration, which effects to large extent of ash reduction. 5Development of polyvinylpyrrolidone/paclitaxel self-assemblies for breast cancer显示文摘The goal of this investigation was to develop and demonstrate a polymer/paclitaxel selfassembly(PTX-SA) formulation. Polymer/PTX-SAs were screened based on smaller size of formulation using dynamic light scattering analysis. Additionally, fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry studies exhibited that polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP)-based PTX-SAs(PVP/PTX-SAs) had superior cellular internalization capability in MCF7 and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells. The optimized PVP/PTXSAs exhibited less toxicity to human red blood cells indicating a suitable formulation for reducing systemic toxicity. The formation of PVP and PTX self-assemblies was confirmed using fluorescence quenching and transmission electron microscopy which indicated that the PVP/PTX-SAs were spherical in shape with an average size range of 53.81 nm as detected by transmission electron microscopy(TEM).FTIR spectral analysis demonstrates incorporation of polymer and paclitaxel functional groups in PVP/PTX-SAs. Both proliferation(MTS) and clonogenic(colony formation) assays were used to validate superior anticancer activity of PVP/PTX-SAs in breast cancer cells over paclitaxel. Such superior anticancer activity was also demonstrated by downregulation of the expression of pro-survival protein(Bcl-x L), upregulation of apoptosis-associated proteins(Bid, Bax, cleaved caspase 7, and cleaved PARP)and β-tubulin stabilization. 7Hepatoprotective activity of Terminalia paniculata against paracetamol induced hepatocellular damage in Wistar albino rats显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the hepatoprotective activity of Terminalia paniculata against paracetamol induced hepatic damage in rats.Methods:The plant material was shade dried, powdered and extracted with ethanol.Liv 52 and silymarin were used as standard drugs and 2%gum acacia as a control(vehicle).Alteration in the levels of biochemical markers of hepatic damage like AST,ALT,ALP and lipid peroxides were tested,and phytochemical tests were also performed.Results:Paracetamol(2 g/kg) increased the serum levels of alanine aminotransfer (ALT),aspartate aminotransferase(AST),alkaline phosphatase(ALP) and the lipid peroxides. 9Study of locust bean gum reinforced cyst-chitosan and oxidized dextran based semi-IPN cryogel dressing for hemostatic application显示文摘Severe blood loss due to traumatic injuries remains one of the leading causes of death in emergency settings.Chitosan continues to be the candidate material for hemostatic applications due to its inherent hemostatic properties.However,available chitosan-based dressings have been reported to have an acidic odor at the wound site due to the incorporation of acid based solvents for their fabrication and deformation under compression owing to low mechanical strength limiting its usability.In the present study semi-IPN cryogel was fabricated via Schiff's base cross-linking between the polyaldehyde groups of oxidized dextran and thiolated chitosan in presence of locust bean gum(LBG)known for its hydrophilicity.Polymerization at12C yielded macroporous semi-IPN cryogels with an average pore size of 124.57±20.31 mm and 85.46%porosity.The hydrophobicity index of LBG reinforced semi-IPN cryogel was reduced 2.42 times whereas the swelling ratio was increased by 156.08%compare to control cryogel.The increased hydrophilicity and swelling ratio inflated the compressive modulus from 28.1 kPa to 33.85 for LBG reinforced semi-IPN cryogel.The structural stability and constant degradation medium pH were also recorded over a period of 12 weeks.The cryogels demonstrated lower adsorption affinity towards BSA.The cytotoxicity assays(direct,indirect)with 3T3-L1 fibroblast cells confirmed the cytocompatibility of the cryogels.The hemolysis assay showed<5%hemolysis confirming blood compatibility of the fabricated cryogel,while whole blood clotting and platelet adhesion assays confirmed the hemostatic potential of semi-IPN cryogel.Lalit Kumar Meena Pavani Raval Dhaval Kedaria Rajesh Vasita 2018Bioactive Materials2018,3,3:4

11Does combined therapy of curcumin and epigallocatechin gallate have a synergistic neuroprotective effect against spinal cord injury?显示文摘Systematic inflammatory response after spinal cord injury(SCI) is one of the factors leading to lesion development and a profound degree of functional loss. Anti-inflammatory compounds, such as curcumin and epigallocatechin gallate(EGCG) are known for their neuroprotective effects. In this study, we investigated the effect of combined therapy of curcumin and EGCG in a rat model of acute SCI induced by balloon compression. Immediately after SCI, rats received curcumin, EGCG, curcumin + EGCG or saline [daily intraperitoneal doses(curcumin, 6 mg/kg; EGCG 17 mg/kg)] and weekly intramuscular doses(curcumin, 60 mg/kg; EGCG 17 mg/kg)] for 28 days. Rats were evaluated using behavioral tests(the Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan(BBB) open-field locomotor test, flat beam test). Spinal cord tissue was analyzed using histological methods(Luxol Blue-cresyl violet staining) and immunohistochemistry(anti-glial fibrillary acidic protein, anti-growth associated protein 43). Cytokine levels(interleukin-1β, interleukin-4, interleukin-2, interleukin-6, macrophage inflammatory protein 1-alpha, and RANTES) were measured using Luminex assay. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction was performed to determine the relative expression of genes(Sort1, Fgf2, Irf5, Mrc1, Olig2, Casp3, Gap43, Gfap, Vegf, NfκB, Cntf) related to regenerative processes in injured spinal cord. We found that all treatments displayed significant behavioral recovery, with no obvious synergistic effect after combined therapy of curcumin and ECGC. Curcumin and EGCG alone or in combination increased axonal sprouting, decreased glial scar formation, and altered the levels of macrophage inflammatory protein 1-alpha, interleukin-1β, interleukin-4 and interleukin-6 cytokines. 12Role of NiMn_(9.3)Al_(4.0)Co_(14.1)Fe_(3.6)alloy on dehydrogenation kinetics of MgH_(2)显示文摘Hydriding and dehydriding properties of MgH_(2)-x wt.%NiMn_(9.3)Al_(4.0)Co_(14.1)Fe_(3.6)(x=10,25,50)nanocomposites have been investigated in present work.Doped alloy was prepared by arc melting method and ball milled with MgH_(2)to get nanocomposites.Onset temperature as low as 180℃was observed for MgH_(2)-50 wt%system which is 80℃lower than the as-milled MgH_(2)giving 131.34 KJ/mol activation energy.Structural analysis shows tetragonal,orthorhombic and monoclinic phases for MgH_(2),Al_(60)Mn_(11)Ni_(4)and Mg_(2)NiH_(4).Morphology by SEM were undertaken to investigate the effect of hydrogenation on nanostructured alloy.DSC studies show a single broad exothermic peak in the temperature range 48℃-353℃after alloy addition in MgH_(2).These results indicate that the hydrogenation properties of MgH_(2)nanocomposite have been improved compared to the as-milled MgH_(2).Priyanka Meena Ramvir Singh V.K.Sharma I.P.Jain 2018Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2018,6,3:3
13Wound healing activity of aqueous extract of Crotalaria verrucosa in Wistar albino rats显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the wound healing effect of aqueous extract of Crotalaria verrucosa(C. verrucosa) in rats.Methods:Three wound models including incision,excision and dead space wounds were used in this study.The parameters studied were breaking strength in incision models,granulation tissue dry weight,breaking strength and hydroxyproline content in dead space wounds,percentage of wound contraction and period of epithelialization in excision wound model.Results:Two doses of the extract with and without dexamethasone showed significant increases in mean hydroxyproline,total protein content and dry weight of granulation tissue but it was higher with dose 800 mg/kg comparing with the control.The dexamethasone treated group showed a significant(P<0.001) reduction in the wound breaking strength when compared to control group in incision type of wound model.Coadministration of C.verrucosa with dexamethasone significantly(P<0.001) increased the breaking strength compared to the dexamethasone treated only group.In excision wound model,the percentage of the wound contraction was significantly(P<0.01) increased by two doses of test extract on all the days except the lower dose which exhibited only on 12th,16th days of drug treatment and it also reversed the dexamethasone suppressed wound contraction.It significantly(P<0.001) reduced the time required for epithelialization and reversed the epithelialization delaying effect of dexamethasone (P<0.001).Conclusions:C.verrucosa was found to possess significant wound healing property. 15Understanding the Removal and Fate of Selected Drugs of Abuse in Sludge and Biosolids from Australian Wastewater Treatment Operations显示文摘Illicit and pharmaceutical drugs are considered to be emerging contaminants of concern,and much research effort has gone into assessing their occurrence in wastewater.However,little information exists on their presence in treated sludge or biosolids.In this study,we examined sludge and biosolids from a large metropolitan wastewater treatment plant(WWTP)in Australia to determine the occurrence of five drugs of abuse,including benzoylecgonine as indicator of cocaine consumption,methamphetamine and 3,4-methylenedioxy methamphetamine(MDMA)as representative illicit stimulants,and codeine and morphine as pharmaceuticals with potential environmental risk.The samples were solid-phase extracted and analyzed by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry(LC–MS/MS).Benzoylecgonine and MDMA were present in raw sludge but were notably degraded during solids treatment processes,and were not detected in the dewatered sludge(after treatment)or in biosolids.Methamphetamine,codeine,and morphine were detected in all biosolids samples at mean concentrations of 20–50 lg kg^-1.The presence of these three drugs in biosolids shows that these compounds are relatively stable in the solids and in soil,and can persist in biosolids for at least several years.A simple environmental risk assessment based on estimated risk quotients(RQs)for these compounds indicated that the potential environmental risks associated with the land application of biosolids are very low at typical Australian biosolids application rates.Meena K.Yadav Cobus Gerber Christopher P.Saint Ben Van den Akker Michael D.Short 2019Engineering2019,5,5:3

20Effect of calcium lactate on compressive strength and self-healing of cracks in microbial concrete显示文摘This paper presents the effect on compressive strength and self-healing capability of bacterial concrete with the addition of calcium lactate.Compared to normal concrete,bacterial concrete possesses higher durability and engineering concrete properties.The production of calcium carbonate in bacterial concrete is limited to the calcium content in cement.Hence calcium lactate is externally added to be an additional source of calcium in the concrete.The influence of this addition on compressive strength,self-healing capability of cracks is highlighted in this study.The bacterium used in the study is bacillus subtilis and was added to both spore powder form and culture form to the concrete.Bacillus subtilis spore powder of 2 million cfu/g concentration with 0.5%cement was mixed to concrete.Calcium lactates with concentrations of 0.5%,1.0%,1.5%,2.0%,and 2.5%of cement,was added to the concrete mixes to test the effect on properties of concrete.In other samples,cultured bacillus subtilis with a concentration of 1×10^cells/mL was mixed with concrete,to study the effect of bacteria in the cultured form on the properties of concrete.Cubes of 100 mm×100 mm×100 mm were used for the study.These cubes were tested after a curing period of 7,14,and 28 d.A maximum of 12%increase in compressive strength was observed with the addition of 0.5%of calcium lactate in concrete.Scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy examination showed the formation of ettringite in pores;calcium silicate hydrates and calcite which made the concrete denser.A statistical technique was applied to analyze the experimental data of the compressive strengths of cementations materials.Response surface methodology was adopted for optimizing the experimental data.The regression equation was yielded by the application of response surface methodology relating response variables to input parameters.This method aids in predicting the experimental results accurately with an acceptable range of error.Findings of this investigation indicated the influence of added calcium lactate in bio-concrete which is quite impressive for improving the compressive strength and self-healing properties of concrete.Kunamineni VIJAY Meena MURMU 2019Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering2019,13,3:2
