| 2 | Vaterite or aragonite observed in the prismatic layer of freshwater-cultured pearls from South China显示文摘A prismatic layer is present in both freshwater-cultured pearls and seawater-cultured pearls. The phase structure of the prismatic layer of freshwater-cultured pearls is investigated for the first time and novel findings are reported in this paper. X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy (OM) and micro-infrared (IR) spectroscopy were used to characterize the crystallized layers of high and low-quality freshwater-cultured pearls. Results show that there is no calcite in the prismatic layer of freshwater-cultured pearls, which is different from what was found for seawater-cultured pearls. We found that an aragonite phase was present in the prismatic layer of high-quality freshwater-cultured pearls and that a vaterite or aragonite phase was present in low-quality pearls. | 3 | Phyto-Toxicity of Chromium in Maize: Oxidative Damage, Osmolyte Accumulation, Anti-Oxidative Defense and Chromium Uptake显示文摘Agricultural production systems are immensely exposed to different environmental stresses in which heavy metal stress receives serious concerns. This study was conducted to explore the deleterious effects of different chromium(Cr) stress levels, i.e., 0, 30, 6090, 120, and 150 μmol L-1, on two maize genotypes, Wandan 13 and Runnong 35. Both genotypes were evaluated by measuring their growth and yield characteristics, Cr accumulation in different plant tissues, alterations in osmolyte accumulation, generation o reactive oxygen species(ROS), and anti-oxidative enzyme activity to scavenge ROS. The results showed that Cr stress decreased the leaf area, cob formation, 100-grain weight, shoot fresh biomass, and yield formation, while Cr accumulation in different maize tissues was found in the order of roots > leaves > stem > seeds in both genotypes. The increased Cr toxicity resulted in higher free proline soluble sugars and total phenolic contents, and lower soluble protein contents. However, enhanced lipid peroxidation was noticed in the forms of malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide(H2O2) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance accumulation, and electrolyte leakage. The hyperactivity of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, especially glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase indicated that these anti-oxidative enzymes had a central role in protecting maize from Cr toxicity, especially for Wandan 13. | 6 | Demonstration of tantalum as a structural material for MEMS thermal actuators显示文摘This work demonstrates the processing,modeling,and characterization of nanocrystalline refractory metal tantalum(Ta)as a new structural material for microelectromechanical system(MEMS)thermal actuators(TAs).Nanocrystalline Ta films have a coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE)and Young’s modulus comparable to bulk Ta but an approximately ten times greater yield strength.The mechanical properties and grain size remain stable after annealing at temperatures as high as 1000°C.Ta has a high melting temperature(Tm=3017℃)and a low resistivity(ρ=20µΩcm).Compared to TAs made from the dominant MEMS material,polycrystalline silicon(polysilicon,Tm=1414℃,ρ=2000µΩcm),Ta TAs theoretically require less than half the power input for the same force and displacement,and their temperature change is half that of polysilicon.Ta TAs operate at a voltage 16 times lower than that of other TAs,making them compatible with complementary metal oxide semiconductors(CMOS).We selectα-phase Ta and etch 2.5-μm-thick sputterdeposited films with a 1μm width while maintaining a vertical sidewall profile to ensure in-plane movement of TA legs.This is 25 times thicker than the thickest reactive-ion-etchedα-Ta reported in the technical literature.Residual stress sensitivities to sputter parameters and to hydrogen incorporation are investigated and controlled.Subsequently,a V-shaped TA is fabricated and tested in air.Both conventional actuation by Joule heating and passive self-actuation are as predicted by models. | Longchang Ni Ryan M.Pocratsky Maarten P.de Boer | 2021 | Microsystems & Nanoengineering2021,7,1: | 2 |
| 7 | Case study of an Equatorial Plasma Bubble Event investigated by multiple ground-based instruments at low latitudes over China显示文摘Observational evidence is insufficient to understand how equatorial plasma bubbles(EPBs)form over low latitudes.The mechanism of plasma-density enhancement(formation of'plasma blobs')at low latitudes is in dispute.In this paper,we use data from multiple ground-based instruments(one all-sky airglow imager,five digisondes,and one Fabry–Perot interferometer)to investigate the evolution of an EPB event that occurred at low latitudes over China on the night of 06 December 2015(06-Dec-2015).We provide observational evidence that an enhanced equatorward wind most likely induced by a substorm could have initiated the Rayleigh–Taylor instability(RTI)that destabilized several EPB depletions in an upwelling region of a large-scale wave-like structure(LSWS)in the bottomside ionosphere.Those EPB depletions were forced to surge poleward,from nearly 10°to 19°magnetic latitude,two hours before midnight.Smaller-scale bifurcations evolved rapidly from tips of airglow depletions by a secondary E×B instability when the aforementioned substorm-induced southwestward wind blew through.During the growth phase of the EPB depletions,a westward polarization electric field inside the LSWS is likely to have compressed plasma downward,inducing the two airglow-type blobs observed in the bottomside ionosphere,by a mechanism of LSWS-blob connection that we propose.We also provide observational evidence of brightness airglow depletions.We find that an enhanced poleward wind associated with a passing-by brightness wave(BW)is likely to have transported plasma to fill the airglow depletions,which finally evolved into brightness airglow structures.This study investigates the physical processes accompanied by the EPB event and those two-airglow blobs observed at low-latitudes over China. | LongChang Sun JiYao Xu YaJun Zhu Wei Yuan XiuKuan Zhao | 2021 | Earth and Planetary Physics2021,5,5: | 1 |

| 16 | 间隙连接蛋白connexin43在膀胱移行细胞癌组织中的表达及其与Bcl-2、Bax表达的相关性(英文)显示文摘Objective: To study the expression of connexin43 (Cx43) gene and its correlation with the apoptosis related genes Bcl-2 and Bax in transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder (BTCC), and to investigate the role of Cx43 in the BTCC. Methods: Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction was used to detect the expression of Cx43 mRNA and immunocytochemistry technique was used to detect the expressions of Bcl-2 and Bax proteins in 60 cases of BTCC tissues, and compared with that of 15 cases of pericancerous tissues and 15 cases of normal bladder tissues. Results: The positive expression rate of Cx43 mRNA in 60 cases of BTCC tissues was 43.33% which was significantly lower than that in pericancerous tissues (73.33%) and normal tissues (100%) (χ2 = 17.58, P < 0.01). The expression of Cx43 had significant negative correlation with the pathological degree and lymph node metastasis of BTCC (χ2 = 9.33 and 9.74, respectively, P < 0.01). However, no correlation was found between the expression and patient sex, age, clinical staging and diameter and growth pattern of BTCC (P > 0.05). Expression of Cx43 negatively correlated with Bcl-2 protein (r = -0.63, P < 0.01) and positively correlated with Bax protein (r = 0.52, P < 0.01). Conclusion: The down-regulated expression of Cx43 gene was closely associated with the development, invasion and metastasis of BTCC. It could be used as a prognostic indicator for BTCC.
