Carbon-coated manganese dioxide nanoparticles and their enhanced electrochemical properties for zinc-ion battery applications显示文摘In this study, we report the cost-effective and simple synthesis of carbon-coated α-MnO_2nanoparticles(α-MnO_2@C) for use as cathodes of aqueous zinc-ion batteries(ZIBs) for the first time. α-MnO_2@C was prepared via a gel formation, using maleic acid(C_4H_4O_4) as the carbon source, followed by annealing at low temperature of 270 °C. A uniform carbon network among the α-MnO_2 nanoparticles was observed by transmission electron microscopy. When tested in a zinc cell, the α-MnO_2@C exhibited a high initial discharge capacity of 272 m Ah/g under 66 m A/g current density compared to 213 m Ah/g, at the same current density, displayed by the pristine sample. Further, α-MnO_2@C demonstrated superior cycleability compared to the pristine samples. This study may pave the way for the utilizing carbon-coated MnO_2 electrodes for aqueous ZIB applications and thereby contribute to realizing high performance eco-friendly batteries. | Saiful Islam Muhammad Hilmy Alfaruqi Jinju Song Sungjin Kim Duong Tung Pham Jeonggeun Jo Seokhun Kim Vinod Mathew Joseph Paul Baboo Zhiliang Xiu Jaekook Kim | 2017 | Journal of Energy Chemistry2017,26,4: | 6
Hematological disorders and pulmonary hypertension显示文摘Pulmonary hypertension(PH),a serious disorder with a high morbidity and mortality rate,is known to occur in a number of unrelated systemic diseases.Several hematological disorders such as sickle cell disease, thalassemia and myeloproliferative diseases develop PH which worsens the prognosis.Associated oxidant injury and vascular inflammation cause endothelial damage and dysfunction.Pulmonary vascular endothelial damage/dysfunction is an early event in PH resulting in the loss of vascular reactivity, activation of proliferative and antiapoptotic pathways leading to vascular remodeling, elevated pulmonary artery pressure, right ventricular hypertrophy and premature death.Hemolysis observed in hematological disorders leads to free hemoglobin which rapidly scavenges nitric oxide(NO),limiting its bioavailability, and leading to endothelial dysfunction. In addition, hemolysis releases arginase into the circulation which converts L-arginine to ornithine, thus bypassing NO production.Furthermore, treatments for hematological disorders such as immunosuppressive therapy, splenectomy, bone marrow transplantation, and radiation have been shown to contribute to the development of PH.Recent studies have shown deregulated iron homeostasis in patients with cardiopulmonary diseases including pulmonary arterial hypertension(PAH).Several studies have reported low iron levels in patients with idiopathic PAH,and iron deficiency is an important risk factor. This article reviews PH associated with hematological disorders and its mechanism:and iron homeostasis and its relevance to PH. | Rajamma Mathew Jing Huang Joseph M Wu John T Fallon Michael H Gewitz | 2016 | World Journal of Cardiology2016,8,12: | 6
Risk factors of thrombosis in abdominal veins显示文摘AIM: To estimate the prevalence of inherited and acquired thrombophilic risk factors in patients with abdominal venous thrombosis and to compare the risk factor profiles between Budd-Chiari syndromes (BCS) and splanchnic vein thrombosis (SVT). METHODS: In this retrospective study, 36 patients with abdominal venous thrombosis were studied. The patients were divided into Budd-Chiari group (hepatic vein, IVC thrombosis) and splanchnic venous thrombosis group (portal, splenic, superior mesenteric veins) based on the veins involved. Hereditary and acquired thrombophilic risk factors were evaluated in all patients. RESULTS: Twenty patients had SVT, 14 had BCS, and 2 had mixed venous thrombosis. Ten patients (28%) had hereditary and 10 patients (28%) acquired thrombophilic risk factors. The acquired risk factors were significantly more common in the SVT group (SVT vs BCS: 45% vs 7%, χ2 = 5.7, P = 0.02) while hereditary risk factors did not show significant differences between the two groups (SVT vs BCS: 25% vs 36%, χ2 = 0.46, P = 0.7). Multiple risk factors were present in one (7%) patient with BCS and in 3 patients (15%) with SVT. No risk factors were identified in 57% of patients with BCS and in 45% of patients with SVT. CONCLUSION: Hereditary and acquired risk factors play an important role in the etiopathogenesis of abdominal venous thrombosis. Acquired risk factorsare significantly more common in SVT patients while hereditary factors are similar in both groups. | Amit Kumar Dutta Ashok Chacko Biju George Joseph Anjilivelil Joseph Sukesh Chandran Nair Vikram Mathews | 2008 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2008,14,28: | 2

Significance of serum carcinoembryonic antigen in metastatic breast cancer patients:A prospective study显示文摘BACKGROUND Carcinoembryonic antigen(CEA)is an important serum tumour marker with a substantial role in diagnosis and monitoring of various solid tumours.About 36%-70%of breast cancers have elevated serum CEA.And the available studies show discrepancy in addressing the prognostic significance of CEA in advanced breast cancer.AIM To estimate the serum CEA level in our metastatic breast cancer patients and correlate it with response to treatment and clinical outcome.METHODS This was a prospective clinical study conducted on 50 metastatic breast cancer patients treated at breast clinic, with newly diagnosed metastatic breast cancer planned for palliative chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and hormonal treatment. We estimated the proportion of patients with elevated serum CEA level at baseline and after palliative treatment and also studied the association of serum CEA levels with known prognostic factors. The response to treatment was correlated with the serum CEA levels in the context of responders and nonresponders.RESULTS The median pre-treatment and post-treatment CEA levels were 7.9(1.8-40.7)ng/mL and 4.39(1.4-12.15)ng/mL,respectively,in the whole study population(P=0.032).No statistically significant difference was seen in baseline serum CEA between responders and non-responders.Even in the luminal group, pretreatment serum CEA was not a predictor of response, but post-treatment CEA was a significant predictor of tumour progression. In patients with liver and lung metastases,post-treatment CEA level difference was not statistically significant in both responders and non-responders though the values were higher in nonresponders.Among those with bone metastases,69.5%had elevated post-treatment serum CEA,and only 37.5%had elevated serum CEA in those with no bone metastases.CONCLUSION Elevated post-treatment serum CEA levels are associated with disease progression and poor response to therapy.Persistently elevated post-treatment serum CEA levels are significantly associated with bone metastases.Elevated serum CEA and hormonal status are significant predictors of treatment response. | Thattungal Manoharan Anoop Rona Joseph P Saikumar Soman Steffi Chacko Mintu Mathew | 2022 | World Journal of Clinical Oncology2022,13,6: | 2

Current status quo on COVID-19 including chest imaging显示文摘With each day the number coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)cases continue to rise rapidly and our imaging knowledge of this disease is expeditiously evolving. The role of chest computed tomography(CT)in the screening or diagnosis of COVID-19 remains the subject of much debate.Despite several months having passed since identifying the disease, and numerous studies related to it,controversy and concern still exists regarding the widespread use of chest CT in the evaluation and management of COVID-19 suspect patients.Several institutes and organizations around the world have released guidelines, recommendations and statements against the use of CT for diagnosing or screening COVID-19 infection and advocating its use only for those cases with a strong clinical suspicion of complication or an alternate diagnosis. However, these guidelines and recommendations are in disagreement with majority of the widely available literature, which strongly favour CT as a pivotal tool in the early diagnosis, management and even follow-up of COVID-19 infection. This article besides comprehensively reviewing the current status quo on COVID-19 disease in general, also writes upon the current consensus statements/recommendations on the use of diagnostic imaging in COVID-19 as well as highlighting the precautions and various disinfection procedures being employed world-wide at the workplace to prevent the spread of infection. | Rishi Philip Mathew Merin Jose Vinayak Jayaram Paul Joy Danny George Maria Joseph TeenaSleeba Ajith Toms | 2020 | World Journal of Radiology2020,12,12: | 1
