| 1 | Generating optical orbital angular momentum at visible wavelengths using a plasmonic metasurface显示文摘Light beams with a helical phase-front possess orbital angular momentum along their direction of propagation in addition to the spin angular momentum that describes their polarisation.Until recently,it was thought that these two‘rotational’motions of light were largely independent and could not be coupled during light–matter interactions.However,it is now known that interactions with carefully designed complex media can result in spin-to-orbit coupling,where a change of the spin angular momentum will modify the orbital angular momentum and vice versa.In this work,we propose and demonstrate that the birefringence of plasmonic nanostructures can be wielded to transform circularly polarised light into light carrying orbital angular momentum.A device operating at visible wavelengths is designed from a space-variant array of subwavelength plasmonic nano-antennas.Experiment confirms that circularly polarised light transmitted through the device is imbued with orbital angular momentum of 62'(with conversion efficiency of at least 1%).This technology paves the way towards ultrathin orbital angular momentum generators that could be integrated into applications for spectroscopy,nanoscale sensing and classical or quantum communications using integrated photonic devices. | Ebrahim Karimi Sebastian A Schulz Israel De Leon Hammam Qassim Jeremy Upham Robert W Boyd | 2014 | Light(Science & Applications)2014，3，1： | 39 |
| 2 | Long-term irritable bowel syndrome symptom control with reintroduction of selected FODMAPs显示文摘AIM To investigate the long-term effect of dietary education on a low fermentable oligosaccharide, disaccharide and polyol(FODMAP) diet on irritable bowel syndrome(IBS) symptoms and quality of life(Qo L).METHODS Participants with IBS(Rome III) were randomized to two groups. Group I commenced a low FODMAP diet at baseline. At three months, group II, so far a comparator group, crossed over to a low FODMAP diet while group I started re-challenging foods. All patients completed the IBS SSS(IBS symptom severity scoring system, 0-500 points increasing with severity), IBS Qo L questionnaire(0-100 increasing with Qo L), a FODMAP specific food frequency questionnaire and provided a stool sample at baseline, three and six months for microbiome analysis.RESULTS Fifty participants were enrolled into group I(n = 23) or group II(n = 27). Participants in both groups were similar in baseline values but with more men in group I. There was a significantly lower IBS SSS(275.6 ± 63.6 to 128.8 ± 82.5 vs 246.8 ± 71.1 to 203.6 ± 70.1)(P < 0.0002) and increased Qo L(68.5 ± 18.0 to 83 ± 13.4 vs 72.9 ± 12.8 to 73.3 ± 14.4)(P < 0.0001) in group I vs group II at 3 mo. The reduced IBS SSS was sustained at 6 mo in group I(160 ± 102) and replicated in group II(124 ± 76). Fiber intake decreased on the low FODMAP diet(33 ± 17 g/d to 21 ± 8 g/d)(P < 0.01) and after re-introducing FODMAP containing foods increased again to 27 ± 9 g/d. | 3 | Bile acids as drivers and biomarkers of hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘The prevalence of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is rapidly increasing,driven not least in part by the escalating prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.Bile acid(BA)profiles are altered in patients with HCC and there is a developing body of evidence from in vitro human cellular models as well as rodent data suggesting that BA are able to modulate fundamental processes that impact on cellular phenotype predisposing to the development of HCC including senescence,proliferation and epithelial-mesenchymal transition.Changes in BA profiles associated with HCC have the potential to be exploited clinically.Whilst excellent diagnostic and imaging tools are available,their use to screen populations with advanced liver disease at risk of HCC is limited by high cost and low availability.The mainstay for HCC screening among subjects with cirrhosis remains frequent interval ultrasound scanning.Importantly,currently available serum biomarkers add little to diagnostic accuracy.Here,we review the current literature on the use of BA measurements as predictors of HCC incidence in addition to their use as a potential screening method for the early detection of HCC.Whilst these approaches do show early promise,there are limitations including the relatively small cohort sizes,the lack of a standardized approach to BA measurement,and the use of inappropriate control comparator samples. | Santo Colosimo Jeremy W Tomlinson | 2022 | World Journal of Hepatology2022，14，9： | 2 |
