Measurements of dihadron correlations relative to the event plane in Au+Au collisions at√^(S)NN=200 GeV显示文摘Dihadron azimuthal correlations containing a high transverse momentum(pr)trigger particle are sensit-ive to the properties of the nuclear medium created at RHIC through the strong interactions occurring between the traversing parton and the medium,ie.jet-quenching.Previous measurements revealed a strong modification to di-hadron azimuthal correlations in Au+Au collisions with respect to ptp and d+Au collisions. The modification in-creases with the collision centrality, suggesting a path-length or energy density dependence to the je-quenching ef-fect.This paper reports STAR measurements of dihadron azimuthal correlations in mid-central(20%-60%)Au+Au collisions at√^(S)NN=200 GeV as a function of the trigger particle's azimuthal angle relative to the event plane,Ф_(s)=|Ф_(t)-ψ_(Ep)|.The azimuthal correlation is studied as a function of both the trigger and associated particle pr.The subtractions of the combinatorial background and anisotropic flow, assuming Zero Yield At Minimum(ZYAM),are described. The correlation results are first discussed with subtraction of the even harmonic(elliptic and quadrangu-lar)flow backgrounds. The away-side correlation is strongly modifed, and the modification varies withФ_(s),with a double-peak structure for out-of-plane trigger particles. The near-side ridge(long range pseudo-rapidity△_(η)correla-tion)appears to drop with increasingФ_(s)while the jet-like component remains approximately constant. The correla-tion functions are further studied with the subtraction of odd harmonic triangular flow background arising from fluc-tuations.It is found that the triangular flow, while responsible for the majority of the amplitudes,is not sufficient to explain theφs-dependence of the ridge or the away-side double-peak structure. The dropping ridge withФ_(s)could be attributed to aФ_(s)-dependent lliptie anisotropy;however, the physics mechanism of the ridge remains an open ques-tion.Even with aФ_(s)-dependent elliptic flow, the away-side correlation structure is robust. These results, with extens-ive systematic studies of the dihadron correlations as a function ofФ_(s),trigger and associated particle pT,and the pseudo-rapidity range△_(η),should provide stringent inputs to help understand the underlying physics mechanisms of jet-medium interactions in high energy nuclear collisions.H.Agakishiev M.M.Aggarwal Z.Ahammed A.V.Alakhverdyants I.Alekseev J.Alford B.D.Anderson C.D.Anson D.Arkhipkin G.S.Averichev J.Balewski 2Cold-chain transportation in the frozen food industry may have caused a recurrence of COVID-19 cases in destination:Successful isolation of SARS-CoV-2 virus from the imported frozen cod package surface显示文摘Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic has spread in 220 countries/regions towreak havoc to human beings around theworld. At present, the second wave of COVID-19 has begun in many European countries. The complete control of COVID-19 is very urgent.Although China quickly brought the virus under control, there have been eight sporadic outbreaks in China since then. Both in Xinfadi of Beijing and Dalian outbreak of COVID-19,environmental swab samples related to imported cold chain food were tested nucleic acid positive for SARS-CoV-2.In this outbreak in Qingdao,we directly isolated SARS-CoV-2 from the cod outer package's surface swab samples. This is the first time worldwide,SARS-CoV-2 were isolated from the imported frozen cod outer package's surface, which showed that imported frozen food industry could import SARS-CoV-2 virus.Peipei Liu Mengjie Yang Xiang Zhao Yuanyuan Guo Liang Wang Jing Zhang Wenwen Lei Weifang Han Fachun Jiang William J.Liu George F.Gao Guizhen Wu 2020Biosafety and Health2020,2,4:41
Fecal microbiota transplantation improves metabolism and gut microbiome composition in db/db mice显示文摘Fecal microbiota transplantation(FMT)has become an effective strategy to treat metabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM).We previously reported that the intestinal microbiome had significant difference between individuals with normal glucose tolerance and T2DM in Chinese Kazak ethnic group. In this study,we investigated the effects of transplanted fecal bacteria from Kazaks with normal glucose tolerance(KNGT)in db/db mice. The mice were treated with 0.2 mL of fecal bacteria solution from KNGT daily for 10 weeks. We showed that the fecal bacteria from KNGT successfully colonized in the intestinal tract of db/db mice detected on day 14.In the FMT-treated db/db mice, the levels of fasting blood glucose, postprandial glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, and low-density lipoprotein–cholesterol were significantly downregulated, whereas high-density lipoprotein–cholesterol levels were upregulated. In the FMT-treated db/db mice,Desulfovibrio and Clostridium coccoides levels in gut were significantly decreased, but the fecal levels of Akkermansia muciniphila and colon histone deacetylase-3(HDAC3)protein expression were increased. At 8 weeks, both intestinal target bacteria and HDAC3 were correlated with glycolipid levels;Akkermansia muciniphila level was positively correlated with HDAC3 protein expression(r=+0.620,P=0.037).Our results suggest that fecal bacteria from KNGT could potentially be used to treat diabetic patients.Pei-pei Zhang Lin-lin Li Xue Han Qin-wei Li Xu-hua Zhang Johnson J.Liu Ye Wang 2020Acta Pharmacologica Sinica2020,41,5:19

Human T-cell immunity against the emerging and re-emerging viruses显示文摘Over the past decade, we have seen an alarming number of high-profile outbreaks of newly emerging and re-emerging viruses.Recent outbreaks of avian influenza viruses, Middle East respiratory syndrome coronaviruses, Zika virus and Ebola virus present great threats to global health. Considering the pivotal role of host T-cell immunity in the alleviation of symptoms and the clearance of viruses in patients, there are three issues to be primarily concerned about T-cell immunity when a new virus emerges: first, does the population possess pre-existing T-cells against the new virus through previous infections of genetically relevant viruses; second, does a proper immune response arise in the patients to provide protection through an immunopathogenic effect; lastly, how long can the virus-specific immune memory persist. Herein, we summarize the current updates on the characteristics of human T-cell immunological responses against recently emerged or re-emerged viruses, and emphasize the necessity for timely investigation on the T-cell features of these viral diseases, which may provide beneficial recommendations for clinical diagnosis and vaccine development.Min Zhao Hangjie Zhang Kefang Liu George F.Gao William J.Liu 2017Science China(Life Sciences)2017,60,12:6

Modulators for Terahertz Communication: The Current State of the Art显示文摘With the increase of communication frequency, terahertz(THz)communication technology has been an important research feld;particularly the terahertz modulator is becoming one of the core devices in THz communication system.Te modulation performance of a THz communication system depends on the characterization of THz modulator.THz modulators based on diferent principles and materials have been studied and developed. However, they are still on the way to practical application due to low modulation speed, narrow bandwidth, and insufcient modulation depth.Terefore,we review the research progress of THz modulator in recent years and evaluate devices critically and comprehensively. We focus on the working principles such as electric, optical, optoelectrical, thermal, magnetic, programmable metamaterials and nonlinear modulation methods for THz wave with semiconductors, metamaterials, and 2D materials(such as graphene, molybdenum disulfde, and tungsten disulfde).Furthermore,we propose a guiding rule to select appropriate materials and modulation methods for specifc applications in THz communication.Z.T.Ma Z.X.Geng Z.Y.Fan J.Liu H.D.Chen 2019Research2019,,1:4
Avian influenza A(H7N9)virus:from low pathogenic to highly pathogenic显示文摘OriginalTranslation The avian influenza A(H7N9)virus is a zoonotic virus that is closely associated with live poultry markets. It has caused infections in humans in China since 2013.Five waves of the H7N9 influenza epidemic occurred in China between March 2013 and September 2017.H7N9 with low-pathogenicity dominated in the first four waves, whereas highly pathogenic H7N9 influenza emerged in poultry and spread to humans during the fifth wave, causing wide concern.Specialists and officials from China and other countries responded quickly, controlled the epidemic well thus far,and characterized the virus by using new technologies and surveillance tools that were made possible by their preparedness efforts. Here,we review the characteristics of the H7N9 viruses that were identified while controlling the spread of the disease. It was summarized and discussed from the perspectives of molecular epidemiology, clinical features, virulence and pathogenesis, receptor binding,T-cell responses, monoclonal antibody development, vaccine development, and disease burden. These data provide tools for minimizing the future threat of H7N9 and other emerging and re-emerging viruses, such as SARS-CoV-2.William J.Liu Haixia Xiao Lianpan Dai Di Liu Jianjun Chen Xiaopeng Qi Yuhai Bi Yi Shi George F.Gao Yingxia Liu 2021Frontiers of Medicine2021,15,4:4
Genomic characterizations of H4 subtype avian influenza viruses from live poultry markets in Sichuan province of China, 2014–2015显示文摘Dear Editor,Avian influenza viruses (AIVs) have posed a serious threat to poultry production and public health. To date, more than fourteen AIV subtypes that are able to infect human beings have been documented. Also, it is suggested that new subtypes may be reported in the future, owing to the migration of wild birds and live poultry transportation (Gao, 2018).Poultry may act as a potential incubator for novel subtypes of avian influenza virus (Bi et al., 2016a; Bi et al., 2016b; Liu et al., 2014a; Su et al., 2017). Up to date, the H7N9 AIV emerged in February 2013 has caused 1,567 human cases, with a fatality rate of 39.2%(http://gffzz36b398b81f8a4a4chq9uupknf09ko69u5.ffgz.tsg.suse.edu.cn/influenza/Chuansong Quan Ting Huang Xiuwei Chen Jie Zhang Qianli Wang Cheng Zhang Tiyan Zhang Lijun Zhou Liumei Shu Chunrong Long Lei Yang Xunbo Du Yingze Zhao Peipei Liu Hao Song Weifeng Shi Yuhai Bi Qiang Lv William J.Liu George F.Gao 2018Science China(Life Sciences)2018,61,9:4
Genomic characterization of SARS-CoV-2 identified in a reemerging COVID-19 outbreak in Beijing's Xinfadi market in 2020显示文摘After 56 days without coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)cases,reemergent cases were reported in Beijing,China on June 11,2020.Here,we report the genetic characteristics of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)sequenced from the clinical specimens of 4 human cases and 2 environmental samples. The nucleotide similarity among six SARS-CoV-2 genomes ranged from 99.98%to 99.99%.Compared with the reference strain of SARS-CoV-2(GenBank No.NC_045512),all six genome sequences shared the same substitutions at nt241(C→T),nt3037(C→T),nt14408(C→T),nt23403(A→G),nt28881(G→A),nt28882(G→A),and nt28883(G→C),which are the characteristic nucleotide substitutions of L-lineage European branch I.This was also proved by themaximum likelihood phylogenetic tree based on the full-length genome of SARS-CoV-2.They also have a unique shared nucleotide substitution,nt6026(C→T),which is the characteristic nucleotide substitution of SARS-CoV-2 in Beijing's Xinfadi outbreak. It is noteworthy that there is an amino acid D614Gmutation caused by nt23403 substitution in all six genomes, which may enhance the virus's infectivity in humans and help it become the leading strain of the virus to spread around the world today. It is necessary to continuously monitor the genetic variation of SARS-CoV-2,focusing on the influence of key mutation sites of SARS-CoV-2 on viral transmission, clinical manifestations, severity, and course of disease.Yong Zhang Yang Pan Xiang Zhao Weifeng Shi Zhixiao Chen Sheng Zhang Peipei Liu Jinbo Xiao Wenjie Tan Dayan Wang William J.Liu Wenbo Xu Quanyi Wang Guizhen Wu 2020Biosafety and Health2020,2,4:3
A CRISPR/Cas12a-empowered surface plasmon resonance platform for rapid and specific diagnosis of the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2显示文摘The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic was partially due to the challenge of identifying asymptomatic and presymptomatic carriers of the virus, and thus highlights a strong motivation for diagnostics with high sensitivity that can be rapidly deployed. On the other hand, several concerning SARS-CoV-2 variants, including Omicron, are required to be identified as soon as the samples are identified as‘positive’.Unfortunately,a traditional PCR test does not allow their specific identification.Herein, for the first time,we have developed MOPCS(Methodologies of Photonic CRISPR Sensing),which combines an optical sensing technology-surface plasmon resonance(SPR)with the‘gene scissors’clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat(CRISPR)technique to achieve both high sensitivity and specificity when it comes to measurement of viral variants.MOPCS is a low-cost,CRISPR/Cas12a-systemempowered SPR gene-detecting platform that can analyze viral RNA,without the need for amplification, within 38 min from sample input to results output, and achieve a limit of detection of 15 fM.MOPCS achieves a highly sensitive analysis of SARS-CoV-2,and mutations appear in variants B.1.617.2(Delta),B.1.1.529(Omicron)and BA.1(a subtype of Omicron). This platform was also used to analyze some recently collected patient samples from a local outbreak in China, identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This innovative CRISPR-empowered SPR platform will further contribute to the fast, sensitive and accurate detection of target nucleic acid sequences with single-base mutations.Zhi Chen Jingfeng Li Tianzhong Li Taojian Fan Changle Meng Chaozhou Li Jianlong Kang Luxiao Chai Yabin Hao Yuxuan Tang Omar AAl-Hartomy Swelm Wageh Abdullah GAl-Sehemi Zhiguang Luo Jiangtian Yu Yonghong Shao Defa Li Shuai Feng William J.Liu Yaqing He Xiaopeng Ma Zhongjian Xie Han Zhang 2022National Science Review2022,9,8:3
Identification of Histoplasma causing an unexplained disease cluster in Matthews Ridge, Guyana显示文摘Here,we report the identification of Histoplasma causing an unexplained disease cluster in Matthews Ridge,Guyana. In March 2019,14 employees of Chongqing Bosai Mining Company,China, working in a manganese mining of Guyana, had unexplained fever, and two of them died.We obtained lung and brain tissues as well as the blood samples from the two deceased cases(patient No.1 and 2),and bronchoscopy lavages and cerebrospinal fluid samples from one severe case(patient No.3),respectively.All samples were tested by pathological examination,high-throughput sequencing, and real-time PCR.Pathological detection showed the presence of spore-like structures in the lung tissue of patient No.1,indicating a fungal infection in this patient.Nanopore sequencing identified the existing of H.capsulatum in the lung tissue sample within 13 h.Next-generation sequencing identified specific fragments of H.capsulatum in all of the samples tested(lung, brain and blood serum from the deceased cases, and plasma from the severe case).Real-time PCR assays did not reveal any viral infection related to transmission from bat feces. We conclude that H.capsulatum was the causative pathogen of this disease cluster based on epidemiologic, clinical, pathological and nucleic acid evidence.Ji Wang Weimin Zhou Hua Ling Xiaoping Dong Yi Zhang Jiandong Li Yong Zhang Jingdong Song William J.Liu Yang Li Ruiqing Zhang Wei Zhen Kun Cai Shuangli Zhu Dongyan Wang Jinbo Xiao Yigang Tong Wenli Liu Lihua Song Wei Wu Yang Liu Xiang Zhao Ruihuan Wang Sheng Ye Jing Wang Roujian Lu Baoying Huang Fei Ye Wenwen Lei Rongbao Gao Qi Shi Cao Chen Jun Han Wenbo Xu George F.Gao Xuejun Ma Guizhen Wu 2019Biosafety and Health2019,1,3:3

Imaging protein crystal growth behaviour in batch cooling crystallisation显示文摘The temporal and spatial growth behaviour of protein crystals, subject to different cooling strategies in protein crystallisation was investigated. Although the impact of temperature and cooling rate on crystal growth of small molecules was well documented, much less has been reported on their impact on the crystallisation of proteins. In this paper, an experimental set-up is configured to carry out such a study which involves an automatic temperature controlled hot-stage crystalliser fitted with a real-time imaging system. Linbro parallel crystallisation experiments(24-well plate) were also conducted to find the suitable initial conditions to be used in the hot-stage crystallisation experiments, including the initial concentration of HEW lysozyme solutions, precipitate concentration and pH value. It was observed that fast cooling rates at the early stage led to precipitates while slow cooling rates produced crystal nuclei, and very slow cooling rates, much smaller than for small molecules are critical to the growth of the nuclei and the crystals to a desired shape. The interesting results provide valuable insight as well as experimental proof of the feasibility and effectiveness of cooling as a means for achieving controlled protein crystallisation, compared with the evaporation approach which was widely used to grow single large crystals for X-ray diffraction study. Since cooling rate control can be easily achieved and has good repeatability, it suggests that large-scale production of protein crystals can be effectively achieved by manipulating cooling rates.Jing J.Liu Cai Y.Ma Xue Z.Wang 2016Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering2016,24,1:3
INFLUENCE OF TIN ON THE HOT DUCTILITY OF A LOW-CARBON STEEL显示文摘The influence of tin on the hot ductility of a 0. 15wt%C steel is investigated using a continuous-casting thermal simulator with three cooling rates. Tin can apparently deteriorate the hot ductility of the steel. Non-equilibrium grain boundary segregation of tin occurs during cooling and plays an important role in reducing the hot ductility of the steel. There is a critical cooling rate for the Sn segregation being between 5 and 20K/s.Z.X.Yuan J.Jia A.M.Guo D.D.Shen S.H.Song J.Liu 2003Acta Metallurgica Sinica(English Letters)2003,16,6:2
