| 1 | Eurycoma Longifolia as a potential adoptogen of male sexual health: a systematic review on clinical studies显示文摘Eurycoma longifolia(EL) has been well recognized as a booster of male sexual health. Over the past few decades, numerous in vivo animal studies and human clinical trials have been conducted across the globe to explore the promising role of EL in managing various male sexual disorders, which include erectile dysfunction, male infertility, low libido, and downregulated testosterone levels. The aim of the present review is to analyze and summarize the literature on human clinical trials which revealed the clinical significance and therapeutic feasibility of EL in improving male sexual health. This systematic review is focused on the following databases: Medline, Wiley Online Library, Bio Med Central, Hindawi, Web of Knowledge, Pub Med Central and Google Scholar, using search terms such as 'Eurycoma longifolia', 'EL', 'Tongkat Ali', 'male sexual health', 'sexual infertility', 'erectile dysfunction', 'male libido', and 'testosterone levels'. Notably, only human clinical studies published between 2000 and 2014 were selected and thoroughly reviewed for relevant citations. Out of 150 articles, 11 met the inclusion criteria. The majority of articles included were randomized placebo-controlled trials, multiple cohort studies, or pilot trials. All these studies demonstrated considerable effects of EL on male sexual health disorders. Among them, 7 studies revealed remarkable association between the use of EL and the efficacy in the treatment of male sexual disorders, and remaining 4 studies failed to demonstrate sufficient effects on male sexual health. In summary, there is convincing evidence for the prominence of EL in improving the male sexual health. | 3 | Synergistic effects of combined therapy of curcumin and Fructus Ligustri Lucidi for treatment of osteoporosis: cellular and molecular evidence of enhanced bone formation显示文摘Objective: The present study explored the effects of the combined herbal therapy consisting of curcumin(CUR) and Fructus Ligustri Lucidi(FLL) on aspects of bone regeneration.Methods: Prior to analyzing the ability of this novel combined herbal therapy to promote aspects of bone regeneration, its cytotoxicity was determined using MC3 T3-E1 cells(pre-osteoblast model). Cell proliferation was evaluated using phase-contrast microscopy and cell differentiation was estimated using alkaline phosphatase activity. The effect of the combined herbal therapy(CUR + FLL) was also assessed in terms of mineralization in the extracellular matrix(ECM) of cultured cells. Further, to explore the molecular mechanisms of bone formation, time-dependent expression of bone-regulating protein biomarkers was also evaluated.Results: Combined herbal therapy(CUR + FLL) significantly upregulated the viability, proliferation and differentiation of MC3 T3-E1 cells compared to the monotherapy of CUR or FLL. The magnitude of ECM mineralization(calcium deposition) was also higher in MC3 T3-E1 cells treated with combined therapy.The time-dependent expression of bone-forming protein biomarkers revealed that the tendency of expression of these bone-regulating proteins was remarkably higher in cells treated with combined therapy.Conclusion: The co-administration of CUR and FLL had superior promotion of elements of bone regeneration in cultured cells, thus could be a promising alternative herbal therapy for the management of bone erosive disorders such as osteoporosis. | Syed Nasir Abbas Bukhari Fahad Hussain Hnin Ei Thu Zahid Hussain | 2019 | Journal of Integrative Medicine2019,17,1: | 4 |
| 4 | Exploring dynamic biomedical algorithm of Eurycoma longifolia Jack and its bioactive phytochemicals: A review of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic implications and future prospects显示文摘Eurycoma longifolia Jack(E.longifolia) is a well-recognized traditional herbal medicine that offers a wide dynamic range of biomedical applications including anti-osteoporotic, anticancer, anti-proliferative, anti-malarial, antimicrobial, antioxidant, aphrodisiac, antiinflammatory, anxiolytic, anti-diabetic, anti-rheumatism and anti-ulcer properties.This review aims to overview the pharmacokinetic and a pharmacodynamic algorithm of E.longifolia and its bioactive components.Analysis of pharmacokinetic profile revealed that E.longifolia exhibit higher bioavailability, high volume of distribution, slow elimination rate, and does not show inhibitory effects on cytochrome P450 isoenzymes.E.longifolia has been used, alone or in combination with other pharmacological agents, in the form of crude extracts, standard extracts, or decoctions of different plant parts(i.e., herbs, shrubs, stem, leaves, and roots) for the treatment of various ailments in animals and humans.Among various bioactive constituents, eurycomanone has been found to be the most remarkable, super-stable, versatile, and most potent phytochemical(isolated or extracted from root extracts) against various types of animals and human diseases.Based on its well-established pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profiles, we suggested that E.longifolia can be a well-accepted complementary and alternative medicine for the treatment of different types of human ailments. | Hnin Ei Thu Zahid Hussain Isa Naina Mohamed Ahmad Nazrun Shuid | 2018 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2018,11,2: | 2 |

| 12 | AcWRKY28 mediated activation of AcCPK genes confers salt tolerance in pineapple(Ananas comosus)显示文摘Unfavorable environmental cues severely affect crop productivity resulting in significant economic losses to farmers. In plants, multiple regulatory genes, such as the WRKY transcription factor (TF) family, modulate the expression of defense genes. However, the role of the pineapple WRKY genes is poorly understood. Here, we studied the pineapple WRKY gene, AcWRKY28, by generating AcWRKY28 over-expressing transgenic pineapple plants. Overexpression of AcWRKY28 enhanced the salt stress resistance in transgenic pineapple lines. Comparative transcriptome analysis of transgenic and wild-type pineapple plants showed that “plant-pathogen interaction” pathway genes, including 9calcium-dependent protein kinases (CPKs), were up-regulated in AcWRKY28 over-expressing plants. Furthermore, chromatin immunoprecipitation and yeast one-hybrid assays revealed AcCPK12, AcCPK3, AcCPK8, AcCPK1, and AcCPK15 as direct targets of AcWRKY28. Consistently, the study of AcCPK12 over-expressing Arabidopsis lines showed that AcCPK12 enhances salt, drought, and disease resistance. | 13 | An Early Stopping-Based Artificial Neural Network Model for Atmospheric Corrosion Prediction of Carbon Steel显示文摘The optimization of network topologies to retain the generalization ability by deciding when to stop overtraining an artificial neural network(ANN)is an existing vital challenge in ANN prediction works.The larger the dataset the ANN is trained with,the better generalization the prediction can give.In this paper,a large dataset of atmospheric corrosion data of carbon steel compiled from several resources is used to train and test a multilayer backpropagation ANN model as well as two conventional corrosion prediction models(linear and Klinesmith models).Unlike previous related works,a grid search-based hyperparameter tuning is performed to develop multiple hyperparameter combinations(network topologies)to train multiple ANNs with mini-batch stochastic gradient descent optimization algorithm to facilitate the training of a large dataset.After that,one selection strategy for the optimal hyperparameter combination is applied by an early stopping method to guarantee the generalization ability of the optimal network model.The correlation coefficients(R)of the ANN model can explain about 80%(more than 75%)of the variance of atmospheric corrosion of carbon steel,and the root mean square errors(RMSE)of three models show that the ANN model gives a better performance than the other two models with acceptable generalization.The influence of input parameters on the output is highlighted by using the fuzzy curve analysis method.The result reveals that TOW,Cl-and SO2 are the most important atmospheric chemical variables,which have a well-known nonlinear relationship with atmospheric corrosion. | Phyu Hnin Thike Zhaoyang Zhao Peng Liu Feihu Bao Ying Jin Peng Shi | 2020 | Computers, Materials & Continua2020,,12: | 0 |

| 15 | Origin and Evolution of Ultramafic Rocks along the Sagaing Fault, Myanmar显示文摘The active Sagaing fault in Myanmar defines the boundary between the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate and causes seismic damage in the major cities of Myanmar. Small bodies of serpentinite occur along the fault. We for the first time investigated the highly sheared serpentinite bodies in the Sheinmagar area and Yega Inn area along the Sagaing fault. Extensively sheared/brecciated serpentinites and related rocks, such as talc and/or chlorite-bearing rocks contains small rock fragments of serpentinites. Serpentine texture and mineral chemistry indicate that the protolith of these serpentinites were mainly harzburgite with minor amounts of dunite, some of which are cut by gabbroic veins. No shape-preferred orientation of the antigorite is present, indicating that the serpentinization was occurred under relatively static conditions. Protolith and serpentine minerals are similar to those of the jadeitite-bearing serpentinites in the north of the Sagaing fault(the Jade Mine belt). Chemical variations of spinels in the studied area are within the compositional range of forearc peridotites and those in the mantle section of nearby ophiolites. After the formation of antigorite serpentinite under static conditions, these serpentinites were subsequently, but locally deformed, probably due to the activity of the Sagaing fault, resulting in the formation of serpentinite schist/brecciated rock. The presence of the less-deformed antigorite serpentinite in the sheared/brecciated zone indicates the strain localization mainly along the surrounding serpentine-talc(±chlorite) schistose rocks, which is probably formed by the reaction between serpentinite and country rocks. | 16 | Wax from Pyrolysis of Waste Plastics as a Potential Source of Phase Change Material for Thermal Energy Storage显示文摘Over the past half-century, plastic consumption has grown rapidly due to its versatility, low cost, and unrivaled functional properties. Among the diff erent implemented strategies for recycling waste plastics, pyrolysis is deemed the most economical option. Currently, the wax obtained from the pyrolysis of waste plastics is mainly used as a feedstock to manufacture chemicals and fuels or added to asphalt for pavement construction, with no other applications of wax being reported. Herein, the thermal pyrolysis of three common waste polyolefin plastics: high-density polyethylene(HDPE), low-density polyethylene(LDPE), and polypropylene(PP), was conducted at 450 ℃. The waste plastics-derived waxes were characterized and studied for a potential new application: phase change materials(PCMs) for thermal energy storage(TES). Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis showed that paraffin makes up most of the composition of HDPE and LDPE waxes, whereas PP wax contains a mixture of naphthene, isoparaffin, olefin, and paraffin. Diff erential scanning calorimetry(DSC) analysis indicated that HDPE and LDPE waxes have a peak melting temperature of 33.8 ℃ and 40.3 ℃, with a relatively high latent heat of 103.2 J/g and 88.3 J/g, respectively, whereas the PP wax was found to have almost negligible latent heat. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and DSC results revealed good chemical and thermal stability of HDPE and LDPE waxes after 100 cycles of thermal cycling. | 17 | Epigenetic modification mechanisms of chloroplasts mutants in pineapple leaves during somatic regeneration显示文摘Somaclonal variation in tissue culture is a common phenomenon induced by various external or internal environmental conditions,resulting in heritable or non-heritable alterations in gene expression. One crucial mechanism involved in plant growth and development is epigenetic regulation. A highly dynamic epigenome can respond to environmental changes by regulating gene expression. DNA methylation is one of these epigenetic modifications that can alter gene expression in tissue-cultured pineapple plants. The underlying mechanism of such somaclonal variations in pineapple and the epigenetic regulation involvement in somaclonal variations has not been studied. This study performed DNA methylome and transcriptome sequencing of wild-type(WT) and mutant pineapple plants(WS, HW, and TW). We observed altered DNA methylation patterns in chlorophyll development in the mutants. Specifically, we noticed that the methylation levels in the CHG and CHH contexts were lower in the gene body regions compared to the upstream and downstream regions. We identified several thousand differentially methylated regions(DMRs) located at the gene body regions, some of which overlapped with the differentially expressed genes(DEGs). Functional enrichment analyses suggested that these genes were involved in chlorophyll metabolism. | 18 | Effect of Photoanode Modification on Charge Transport,Recombination and Efficiency of Dye Sensitized SolarCells Using Synthetic Organic Dyes显示文摘The DSSCs (Dye-sensitized solar cells) with photoanode using different sizes of particulate TiO2 (18 nm, 30 nm and 200 nm) have been fabricated. The synthetic organic dyes (LEG4) was used as photosensitizer. The present work mainly investigates the influence of TiO2 photoanode modification on light absorption, charge transport and carrier recombination which are then correlated to the device efficiency measured under AM1.5 solar irradiance. The DSSCs with photoanode using larger 200-nm-TiO2 as light scatterer outperform other devices without larger TiO2. It is attributed to an increase in harvesting photons (by UV-vis spectroscopic measurement) via light scattering, smaller ideality factor (by dark current analysis), thus lower recombination possibility, lower charge transfer resistance and longer electron lifetime (by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) which results in longer electron diffusion and higher charge collection efficiency.
