| 2 | The role of climate factors in geographic variation in body mass and wing length in a passerine bird显示文摘Background: Geographic variation in body size is assumed to reflect adaptation to local environmental conditions. Although Bergmann's rule is usually sufficient to explain such variation in homeotherms, some exceptions have been documented. The relationship between altitude, latitude and body size, has been well documented for some vertebrate taxa during the past decades. However, relatively little information is available on the effects of climate variables on body size in birds.Methods: We collected the data of 267 adult Eurasian Tree Sparrow(Passer montanus) specimens sampled at 48 localities in China's mainland, and further investigated the relationships between two response variables, body mass and wing length, as well as a suit of explanatory variables, i.e. altitude, latitude, mean annual temperature(MAT), annual precipitation(PRC), annual sunshine hours(SUN), average annual wind speed(WS), air pressure(AP) and relative humidity(RH).Results: Our study showed that(1) although the sexes did not differ significantly in body mass, males had longer wings than females;(2) body mass and wing length were positively correlated with altitude but not with latitude;(3) body mass and wing length were negatively correlated with AP and RH, but not significantly correlated with WS. Body mass was positively correlated with SUN and inversely correlated with MAT. Wing length was not correlated with MAT in either sex, but was positively correlated with SUN and negatively correlated with PRC in male sparrows;(4) variation in body mass could be best explained by AP and SUN, whereas variation in wing length could be explained by RH and AP in both sexes. In addition, variation in male sparrows can be explained by SUN, WS and PRC but not in females.Conclusions: Two different proxies of body size, body mass and wing length, correlated with same geographic factors and different climate factors. | 4 | Integrative taxonomy of the Russet Bush Warbler Locustella mandelli complex reveals a new species from central China显示文摘Background: The Russet Bush Warbler Locustella(previously Bradypterus) mandelli complex occurs in mountains in the eastern Himalayas, southern China, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Indonesia. The taxonomy has been debated,with one(L. seebohmi) to four(L. seebohmi, L. mandelli, L. montis and L. timorensis) species having been recognised.Methods: We used an integrative approach, incorporating analyses of morphology, vocalizations and a molecular marker, to re-evaluate species limits in the L. mandelli complex.Results: We found that central Chinese L. mandelli differed from those from India through northern Southeast Asia to southeast China in plumage, morphometrics and song. All were easily classified by song, and(wing + culmen)/tail ratio overlapped only marginally. Both groups were reciprocally monophyletic in a mitochondrial cytochrome b(cytb) gene tree, with a mean divergence of 1.0 ± 0.2%. They were sympatric and mostly altitudinally segregated in the breeding season in southern Sichuan province. We found that the Mt Victoria(western Myanmar) population differed vocally from other L. mandelli, but no specimens are available. Taiwan Bush Warbler L. alishanensis was sister to the L. mandelli complex, with the most divergent song. Plumage, vocal and cytb evidence supported the distinctness of the south Vietnamese L. mandelli idonea. The Timor Bush Warbler L. timorensis, Javan Bush Warbler L.montis and Benguet Bush Warbler L. seebohmi differed distinctly in plumage, but among-population song variation in L. montis exceeded the differences between some populations of these taxa, and mean pairwise cytb divergences were only 0.5–0.9%. We also found that some L. montis populations differed morphologically.Conclusions: We conclude that the central Chinese population of Russet Bush Warbler represents a new species,which we describe herein, breeding at mid elevations in Sichuan, Shaanxi, Hubei, Hunan and Guizhou provinces.The taxonomic status of the other allopatric populations is less clear. However, as they differ to a degree comparable with that of the sympatric L. mandelli and the new species, we elevate L. idonea to species status, and retain L. seebohmi and L. montis as separate species, the latter with timorensis as a subspecies. Using a trial-and-error procedure to minimize errors, the coefficients were determined and a formula was developed for predicting the settling velocity of natural sediment particles. | 6 | The potential drivers in forming avian biodiversity hotspots in the East Himalaya Mountains of Southwest China显示文摘Little has been published to describe or interpret Asian biodiversity hotspots,including those in the East Himalayan Mountains of Southwest China(HMSC),thus making necessary a review of the current knowledge.The Pliocene and Pleistocene geological and glacial histories of the Asian continent differ from those of Europe and North America,suggesting different mechanisms of speciation and extinction,and,thus,different responses to climate changes during the Quaternary glaciations.This short review summarizes potential drivers in shaping and maintaining high species richness and endemism of birds in the HMSC.The geographical location at the junction of different biogeographical realms,the wide range of habitats and climates along the extensive elevational range,the complex topography and the distinct geological history of this region have probably contributed to the evolution of an exceptionally species-rich and endemic-rich,specialized montane avian fauna.The Mountain systems in the HMSC may have provided refugia where species survived during the glacial periods and barriers for preventing species dispersal after the glacial periods.More studies are required to further test this refugia hypothesis by comparing more cold-tolerent and warm-tolerent species. | Fumin LEI Yanhua QU Gang SONG Per ALSTRÖM Jon FJELDSÅ | 2015 | Integrative Zoology2015,10,2: | 3 |

| 12 | Genetic and Geographic Patterns of Duplicate DPL Genes Causing Genetic Incompatibility Within Rice:Implications for Multiple Domestication Events in Rice显示文摘Strong genetic incompatibilities exist between two primary rice subspecies,indica and japonica.However,the wild ancestors of rice,O.nivara Sharma et Shastry and O.rufipogon Griff.,are genetically compatible.How this genetic incompatibility became established has not been clearly elucidated.To provide insights into the process,we analyzed a pair of hybrid sterility genes in rice,DOPPELGANGER 1(DPL1)and DOPPELGANGER 2(DPL2).Either of the two loci can have one defective allele(DPL1-and DPL2-).Hybrid pollen carrying both DPL1-and DPL2-alleles is sterile.To explore the origination of DPL1-and DPL2-,we sequenced the DPL1 and DPL2 genes of 811 individual plants,including Oryza sativa(132),O.nivara(296)and O.rufipogon(383).We then obtained 20 DPL1 and 34 DPL2 sequences of O.sativa from online databases.Using these sequences,we analyzed the genetic and geographic distribution patterns of DPL genes in modern rice and its wild ancestors.Compared with the ancestral populations,DPL1-and DPL2-showed reduced diversity but increased frequency in modern rice.We speculated that the diversity reduction was due to a historic genetic bottleneck,and the frequency had likely increased because the defective alleles were preferred following this artificial selection.Such results indicated that standing variances in ancestral lines can lead to severe incompatibilities among descendants.Haplotype analysis indicated that the DPL1-haplotype of rice emerged from an O.nivara population in India,whereas the DPL2-haplotype emerged from O.rufipogon in South China.Hence,the evolutionary history of DPLs conforms to the presumed multiple domestication events of modern rice. | Xu Xun Ge Song Zhang Fumin | 2021 | Rice science2021,28,1: | 1 |

Acoustic communication is required for many application scenarios of μAUVs to enable data transmission without surfacing. This paper presents the integration of a compact acoustic communication device with a μAUV prototype. Packet reception rate(PRR) and bit error rate(BER) of the acoustic communication link are evaluated in a confined pool environment through experiments while the μAUV is either stationary or moving.We pinpoint several major factors that impact the communication performance. Experimental results show that the multi-path effect significantly affects the synchronization signals of the communication device. The relative motion between the vehicle and the base station also degrades the communication performance. | 19 | Construction of isolated Ni sites on nitrogen-doped hollow carbon spheres with Ni-N_(3) configuration for enhanced reduction of nitroarenes显示文摘Designing and synthesizing high-efficiency non-precious metal-based catalysts having uniform active sites increases the reactivity and selectivity of materials and provides a platform for an in-depth understanding of their catalytic reaction mechanism.In this study,we provided an approach for fabricating isolated nickel single-atom sites(Ni SAs)with high loading(4.9 wt.%)stabilized on nitrogen-doped hollow carbon spheres(NHCS)using a core–shell structured Zn/Ni bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate framework(ZIF)composite as the sacrificial template.The as-fabricated Ni SAs/NHCS catalyst shows superior activity,selectivity,and recycling durability for the catalytic transfer hydrogenation of nitrobenzene to aniline,thus achieving 100%yield of aniline with a turn-over frequency(TOF)value as high as 29.9 h^(−1) under mild conditions.This TOF value is considerably superior to the supported Ni nanoparticle catalysts.The experiments designed show that the hollow structure feature of NHCS facilitates accessible active sites and mass transfer,which thus contributes to the enhancement of the catalytic performance of Ni SAs/NHCS.Density functional theory calculations show the high chemo-selectivity and activity of the Ni SAs catalyst,arising from the unique role of the single Ni-N3 site on simultaneously activating the H donor(N_(2)H_(4))and substrate,as well as the hydrogenation of the–NOH group as the rate-determining step. | Binbin Feng Rou Guo Qiulan Cai Yaping Song Nan Li Yanghe Fu De-Li Chen Jiangwei Zhang Weidong Zhu Fumin Zhang | 2022 | Nano Research2022,15,7: | 0 |
| 20 | Ecological and evolutionary constraints on regional avifauna of passerines in China显示文摘Strong correlations between species diversity and climate have been widely observed,but the mechanism underlying this relationship is unclear.Here,we explored the causes of the richness-climate relationships among passerine birds in China by integrating tropical conservatism and diversification rate hypotheses using path models.We found that assemblages with higher species richness southwest of the Salween-Mekong-Pearl River Divide are phylogenetically overdispersed and have shorter mean root distances(MRDs),while species-rich regions northeast of this divide(e.g.,north Hengduan Mountains-south Qinling Mountains)are phylogenetically clustered and have longer MRDs.The results of the path analyses showed that the direct effect of climatic factors on species richness was stronger than their indirect effects on species richness via phylogenetic relatedness,indicating that neither tropical conservatism nor diversification rate hypotheses can well explain the richness-climate relationship among passerines in China.However,when path analyses were conducted within subregions separately,we found that the tropical conservatism hypothesis was well supported in the southwestern Salween-Mekong-Pearl River Divide,while the diversification rate hypothesis could explain the richness-climate relationship well in the northeastern divide.We conclude that the diversity patterns of passerines in different subregions of the Eastern Himalayas-Mountains of Southwest China may be shaped by different evolutionary processes related to geological and climatic histories,which explains why the tropical conservatism or diversification rate hypothesis alone cannot fully explain the richness-climate relationships. | Tianlong Cai Qing Quan Gang Song Yongjie Wu Zhixin Wen Chunlan Zhang Yanhua Qu Gexia Qiao Fumin Lei | 2021 | Current Zoology2021,67,4: | 0 |
