| 1 | Enhanced secondary pollution offset reduction of primary emissions during COVID-19 lockdown in China显示文摘To control the spread of the 2019 novel coronavirus(COVID-19),China imposed nationwide restrictions on the movement of its population(lockdown)after the Chinese New Year of 2020,leading to large reductions in economic activities and associated emissions.Despite such large decreases in primary pollution,there were nonetheless several periods of heavy haze pollution in eastern China,raising questions about the well-established relationship between human activities and air quality.Here,using comprehensive measurements and modeling,we show that the haze during the COVID lockdown was driven by enhancements of secondary pollution.In particular,large decreases in NOx emissions from transportation increased ozone and nighttime NO_(3)radical formation,and these increases in atmospheric oxidizing capacity in turn facilitated the formation of secondary particulate matter.Our results,afforded by the tragic natural experiment of the COVID-19 pandemic,indicate that haze mitigation depends upon a coordinated and balanced strategy for controlling multiple pollutants. | Xin Huang Aijun Ding Jian Gao Bo Zheng Derong Zhou Ximeng Qi Rong Tang Jiaping Wang Chuanhua Ren Wei Nie Xuguang Chi Zheng Xu Liangduo Chen Yuanyuan Li Fei Che Nini Pang Haikun Wang Dan Tong Wei Qin Wei Cheng Weijing Liu Qingyan Fu Baoxian Liu Fahe Chai Steven JDavis Qiang Zhang Kebin He | 2021 | National Science Review2021,8,2: | 47 |

| 4 | Small molecule inhibitors reveal allosteric regulation of USP14 via steric blockade显示文摘The ubiquitin system is important for drug discovery,and the discovery of selective small-molecule inhibitors of deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs) remains an active yet extremely challenging task. With a few exceptions,previously developed inhibitors have been found to bind the evolutionarily conserved catalytic centers of DUBs,resulting in poor selectivity. The small molecule IU1 was the first-ever specific inhibitor identified and exhibited surprisingly excellent selectivity for USP14 over other DUBs. However,the molecular mechanism for this selectivity was elusive. Herein,we report the high-resolution co-crystal structures of the catalytic domain of USP14 bound to IU1 and three IU1 derivatives. All the structures of these complexes indicate that IU1 and its analogs bind to a previously unknown steric binding site in USP14,thus blocking the access of the C-terminus of ubiquitin to the active site of USP14 and abrogating USP14 activity. Importantly,this steric site in USP14 is very unique,as suggested by structural alignments of USP14 with several known DUB X-ray structures. These results,in conjunction with biochemical characterization,Indicate a coherent steric blockade mechanism for U5P14 inhibition by compounds of the IU series. | 8 | A review on tribology of polymer composite coatings显示文摘Self-lubricating polymer composite coatings,with tailorable tribological and mechanical properties,have been widely employed on mechanical parts to reduce friction and wear,which saves energy and improves the overall performance for applications such as aerospace satellite parts,shafts,gears,and bushings.The addition of functional fillers can overcome the limitations of single-polymer coatings and extend the service life of the coatings by providing a combination of low friction,high wear resistance,high load bearing,high temperature resistance,and high adhesion.This paper compares the heat resistance,and the tribological and mechanical properties of common polymer matrices,as well as the categories of functional fillers that improve the coating performance.Applicable scopes,process parameters,advantages,and limitations of the preparation methods of polymer coatings are discussed in detail.The tribological properties of the composite coatings with different matrices and fillers are compared,and the lubrication mechanisms are analyzed.Fillers reduce friction by promoting the formation of transfer films or liquid shear films.Improvement of the mechanical properties of the composite coatings with fillers of different morphologies is described in terms of strengthening and toughening mechanisms,including a stress transfer mechanism,shear yielding,crack bridging,and interfacial debonding.The test and enhancement methods for the adhesion properties between the coating and substrate are discussed.The coating adhesion can be enhanced through mechanical treatment,chemical treatment,and energy treatment of the substrate.Finally,we propose the design strategies for high-performance polymer composite coating systems adapted to specific operating conditions,and the limitations of current polymer composite coating research are identified. | Yilong REN Lin ZHANG Guoxin XIE Zhanbo LI Hao CHEN Hanjun GONG Wenhu XU Dan GUO Jianbin LUO | 2021 | Friction2021,9,3: | 13 |
| 9 | Clinical features of severe pediatric patients with coronavirus disease 2019 in Wuhan: a single center's observational study显示文摘Background An outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by SARS-CoV-2 was first detected in Wuhan,Hubei,China.People of all ages are susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection.No information on severe pediatric patients with COVID-19 has been reported.We aimed to describe the clinical features of severe pediatric patients with COVID-19.Methods We included eight severe or critically ill patients with COVID-19 who were treated at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU),Wuhan Children's Hospital from January 24 to February 24.We collected information including demographic data,symptoms,imaging data,laboratory findings,treatments and clinical outcomes of the patients with severe COVID-19.Results The onset age of the eight patients ranged from 2 months to 15 years;six were boys.The most common symptoms were polypnea (8/8),followed by fever (6/8) and cough (6/8).Chest imaging showed multiple patch-like shadows in seven patients and ground-glass opacity in six.Laboratory findings revealed normal or increased whole blood counts (7/8),increased C-reactive protein,procalcitonin and lactate dehydrogenase (6/8),and abnormal liver function (4/8).Other findings included decreased CD16 + CD56 (4/8) and Th/Ts*(1/8),increased CD3 (2/8),CD4 (4/8) and CD8 (1/8),IL-6 (2/8),IL-10 (5/8) and IFN-γ (2/8).Treatment modalities were focused on symptomatic and respiratory support.Two critically ill patients underwent invasive mechanical ventilation.Up to February 24,2020,three patients remained under treatment in ICU,the other five recovered and were discharged home.Conclusions In this series of severe pediatric patients in Wuhan,polypnea was the most common symptom,followed by fever and cough.Common imaging changes included multiple patch-like shadows and ground-glass opacity;and a cytokine storm was found in these patients,which appeared more serious in critically ill patients. | Dan Sun Hui Li Xiao-Xia Lu Han Xiao Jie Ren Fu-Rong Zhang Zhi-Sheng Liu | 2020 | World Journal of Pediatrics2020,16,3: | 12 |
| 10 | Herb-partitioned moxibustion alleviates colon injuries in ulcerative colitis rats显示文摘AIM To observe the effect of herb-partitioned moxibustion(HPM) on expression of colonic cytokines in ulcerative colitis(UC) rats.METHODS A UC rat model was established by protein immunization in combination with topical chemical stimulation.Rats in the HPM group(n = 8) received HPM at bilateral Tianshu(ST25) points.The gross injury and pathological scores of the colon were recorded.The expression profile of colonic cytokines was assayed using the protein microarray technique.Specific differential cytokines were selected and verified by ELISA.The corresponding Uni Prot Accessions of the differentially expressed cytokines were retrieved in the Uni Prot database.The pathways involved were analyzed with the help of the KEGG PATHWAY database.The DAVID database was used for functional cluster and pathway analysis.RESULTS HPM improved colon injuries in UC rats,manifested by accelerated repair of ulcers and alleviation of inflammation,and the gross injury and pathological scores both significantly decreased(P < 0.01).Fold change > 1.3 or < 0.77 was taken as the screening standard.There were 77 down-regulated and 9 up-regulated differentially expressed colonic cytokines in the HPM group compared with the model group,and expression of 20 differed significantly(P < 0.05).Twelve of the 20 significantly differentially expressed cytokines [β-catenin,interleukin-1 receptor 6(IL-1 R6),IL-1β,B7-1,nerve growth factor receptor,AMP-activated protein kinase-α1,neuropilin-2,orexin A,adipocyte differentiation-related protein,IL-2,Fas and Fas L] were up-regulated in the model group(n = 3,compared with the normal group) but downregulated in the HPM group(n = 3,compared with the model group).Functional cluster analysis showed that the differentially expressed colonic cytokines in the HPM group regulated apoptosis and protein phosphorylation.KEGG pathway analysis showed that 52 down-regulated and 7 up-regulated differentially expressed colonic cytokines in the HPM group had pathways.The pathways that interacted between the cytokines and their receptors accounted for the largest proportion(28 of the downregulated and 5 of the up-regulated cytokines).CONCLUSION HPM promotes the repair of colon injuries in UC rats,which is related to the regulation of several abnormally expressed cytokines. | Dan Zhang Yan-Bo Ren Kai Wei Jue Hong Yan-Ting Yang Li-Jie Wu Ji Zhang Zheng Shi Huan-Gan Wu Xiao-Peng Ma | 2018 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2018,24,30: | 11 |
| 11 | Effects of sepsis and its treatment measures on intestinal flora structure in critical care patients显示文摘BACKGROUND Sepsis is a common disease in intensive care units,with high morbidity and mortality.Intestinal microecology plays a vital part in the development and progression of this disease,possibly because sepsis and its treatment cause specific changes in the composition of the intestinal flora.AIM To investigate the characteristics of intestinal flora disturbance in sepsis patients treated with antibiotics.METHODS In this prospective comparative study,we enrolled ten patients with sepsis(sepsis group),hospitalized in the Department of Critical Care Medicine of the General Hospital,Ningxia Medical University,China(a class IIIa general hospital)from February 2017 to June 2017;ten patients without sepsis hospitalized in the same period(non-sepsis group)and ten healthy individuals(control group)were also enrolled.Fecal samples collected from the three groups were subjected to 16S rRNA gene sequencing and the intestinal flora diversity,structure,and composition were determined.Additionally,the dynamics of the intestinal flora diversity,structure,and composition in sepsis patients were investigated via 16S rRNA gene sequencing of samples collected 0 d,3 d,and 7 d after admittance to the intensive care unit.Correlations between the serum levels of procalcitonin,endotoxin,diamine oxidase,and D-lactic acid and the intestinal flora composition of sepsis patients were also investigated.RESULTS Compared with the healthy control group,sepsis and non-sepsis patients showed reduced intestinal floraα-diversity and a distinct flora structure,with Firmicutes as the dominant phylum,and significantly decreased proportions of Bacteroidetes,as well as Prevotella and Lachnospira,among other genera.Of note,the proportion of Enterococcus was significantly increased in the intestinal tract of sepsis patients.Interestingly,theα-diversity in the sepsis group decreased gradually,from days 1 to 7 of treatment.However,pairwise comparisons showed that both the diversity and structure of the intestinal flora were not significantly different considering the three different time points studied.Curiously,the serum levels of procalcitonin,endotoxin,diamine oxidase,and D-lactic acid in sepsis patients correlated with the prevalence of various bacterial genera.For example,the prevalence of Ruminococcus was positively correlated with serum procalcitonin,endotoxins,and diamine oxidase;similarly,the prevalence of Roseburia was positively correlated with serum procalcitonin,endotoxins,and D-lactic acid.CONCLUSION Sepsis patients in intensive care units show dysbiosis,lasting for at least 1 wk. | Xiao-Juan Yang Dan Liu Hong-Yan Ren Xiao-Ya Zhang Jun Zhang Xiao-Jun Yang | 2021 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2021,27,19: | 11 |

| 13 | Effects of Forest Type and Urbanization on Carbon Storage of Urban Forests in Changchun, Northeast China显示文摘Rapid urbanization has led to dramatic changes in urban forest structures and functions, and consequently affects carbon(C) storage in cities. In this study, field surveys were combined with high resolution images to investigate the variability of C storage of urban forests in Changchun, Northeast China. The main objectives of this study were to quantify the C storage of urban forests in Changchun City, Northeast China and understand the effects of forest type and urbanization on C storage of urban forests. The results showed that the mean C density and the total C storage of urban forests in Changchun were 4.41 kg/m2 and 4.74 × 108 kg, respectively. There were significant differences in C density among urban forest types. Landscape and relaxation forest(LF) had the highest C density with 5.41 kg/m2, while production and management forest(PF) had the lowest C density with 1.46 kg/m2. These differences demonstrate that urban forest type is an important factor needed to be considered when the C storage is accurately estimated. Further findings revealed significant differences in different gradients of urbanization, and the mean C density decreased from the first ring(6.99 kg/m2) to the fourth ring(2.87 kg/m2). The total C storage increased from the first ring to the third ring. These results indicate that C storage by urban forests will be significantly changed during the process of urbanization. | 15 | Yu Gan Long Ameliorates Hepatic Fibrosis by Inhibiting PI3K/AKT,Ras/ERK and JAK1/STAT3 Signaling Pathways in CCl4-induced Liver Fibrosis Rats显示文摘Yu Gan Long(YGL)is a Chinese traditional herbal formula which has been reported to attenuate liver fibrosis for many years and we have explored its anti-fibrotic mechanism through blocking transforming growth factor(TGF-β)in the previous study.But the mechanisms associated with platelet-derived growth factor(PDGF)-BB remain obscure.In this study,we further investigated the mechanism of YGL reducing carbon tetrachloride(CCl4)-induced liver fibrosis in rats.Our results showed that YGL suppressed CCl4-induced upregulation of collagen IV(Col IV),type HI precollagen(PCHI),hyaluronuc acid(HA)and laminin(LN),which are implicated in liver fibrosis.Also,YGL reduced theα-smooth muscle actin(α-SMA)expression,which acts as the indicator of liver fibrosis.Furthermore,YGL decreased the serum levels of hepatic stellate cell(HSC)mitogen PDGF-BB and inflammation cytokines,including TNF-α,IL-1β,IL-6.Markers involved in liver fibrosis,such as Ras,p-Raf-1,p-ERK1/2,p-JNK,p-P38,p-PI3K,p-AKT,p-JAKl,p-STAT3 were downregulated significantly after treatment with YGL.Our results indicated that YGL ameliorated CCl4-induced liver fibrosis by reducing inflammation cytokines production,and suppressing Ras/ERK,PI3K/AKT,and JAK1/STAT3 signaling pathways,which provided further evidence towards elucidation of the anti-fibrotic mechanism of YGL. | Hou-gang LI Peng-tao YOU Yu XI Yu CAI Yi-jun TU Meng-heng WANG Wan-ci SONG Tai-min QUAN Hui-ying REN Yan-wen LIU Han-xiong DAN Shi-qing XU | 2020 | Current Medical Science2020,40,3: | 9 |
| 16 | Photodegradation of 17α-ethynylestradiol in dissolved humic substances solution:Kinetics,mechanism and estrogenicity variation显示文摘17α-Ethynylestradiol(EE2) in natural waters may cause adverse effects on organisms due to its high estrogenic potency. Laboratory studies were performed to study the effects of a local humic acid(LHA), fulvic acid(LFA) and Aldrich humic acid(AHA) on the photochemical behavior and estrogenic potency of EE2. Here photolytic experiments demonstrated that pure aqueous EE2 could undergo direct and self-sensitized photodegradation at a global rate of 0.0068 hr^(-1).Photodegradation rate of EE2 in 5.0 mg/L dissolved humic substances(DHS) was determined to be 0.0274, 0.0296 and 0.0254 hr^(-1) for LHA, LFA and AHA, respectively. Reactive oxygen species(ROS) and triplet dissolved humic substances(~3DHS*) scavenging experiments indicated that the promotion effect of DHS on EE2 photodegradation was mainly aroused by the reactions of HOU(35%–50%),~1O_2(<10%) andDHS*(22%–34%). However, the photodegradation of EE2 could also be inhibited when DHS exceeded the threshold of 10 mg/L. Three hydroxylation products of EE2 were identified using GC–MS and their formation pathways were also proposed. In vitro estrogenicity tests showed that EE2 was transformed into chemicals without estrogenic potency. | 19 | One Stone Four Birds:A Novel Liposomal Delivery System Multi-functionalized with Ginsenoside Rh2 for Tumor Targeting Therapy显示文摘Liposomes hold great potential in anti-cancer drug delivery and the targeting treatment of tumors.However,the clinical therapeutic efficacy of liposomes is still limited by the complexity of tumor microenvironment(TME)and the insufficient accumulation in tumor sites.Meanwhile,the application of cholesterol and polyethylene glycol(PEG),which are usually used to prolong the blood circulation and stabilize the structure of liposomes respectively,has been questioned due to various disadvantages.Herein,we developed a ginsenoside Rh2-based multifunctional liposome system(Rh2-lipo)to effectively address these challenges once for all.Different with the conventional’wooden’liposomes,Rh2-lipo is a much more brilliant carrier with multiple functions.In Rh2-lipo,both cholesterol and PEG were substituted by Rh2,which works as membrane stabilizer,long-circulating stealther,active targeting ligand,and chemotherapy adjuvant at the same time.Firstly,Rh2 could keep the stability of liposomes and avoid the shortcomings caused by cholesterol.Secondly,Rh2-lipo showed a specifically prolonged circulation behavior in the blood.Thirdly,the accumulation of the liposomes in the tumor was significantly enhanced by the interaction of glucose transporter of tumor cells with Rh2.Fourth,Rh2-lipo could remodel the structure and reverse the immunosuppressive environment in TME.When tested in a 4T1 breast carcinoma xenograft model,the paclitaxel-loaded Rh2-lipo realized high efficient tumor growth suppression.Therefore,Rh2-lipo not only innovatively challenges the position of cholesterol as a liposome component,but also provides another innovative potential system with multiple functions for anti-cancer drug delivery. | Chao Hong Jianming Liang Jiaxuan Xia Ying Zhu Yizhen Guo Anni Wang Chunyi Lu Hongwei Ren Chen Chen Shiyi Li Dan Wang Huaxing Zhan Jianxin Wang | 2020 | Nano-Micro Letters2020,12,10: | 8 |
| 20 | Inhibition effect of magnetic field on nitrous oxide emission from sequencing batch reactor treating domestic wastewater at low temperature显示文摘This study aims to investigate the effect of a magnetic field on nitrous oxide(N2O)emission from a sequencing batch reactor treating low-strength domestic wastewater at low temperature(10℃).After running for 124 days in parallel,results indicated that the conversion rate of N2O for a magnetic field-sequencing batch reactor(MF-SBR)decreased by34.3%compared to that of a conventional SBR(C-SBR).Meanwhile,the removal efficiencies for total nitrogen(TN)and ammonia nitrogen(NH4-N)of the MF-SBR were 22.4%and 39.5%higher than those of the C-SBR.High-throughput sequencing revealed that the abundances of AOB(Nitrosomonas),NOB(Nitrospira)and denitrifiers(Zoogloea),which could reduce N2O to N2,were promoted significantly in the MF-SBR.Enzyme activities(Nir)and gene abundances(nos Z nir S and nir K)for denitrification in the MF-SBR were also notably higher compared to C-SBR.Our study shows that application of a magnetic field is a useful approach for inhibiting the generation of N2O and promoting the nitrogen removal efficiency by affecting the microbial characteristics of sludge in an SBR treating domestic wastewater at low temperature. | Dan Xu Hongmin Ji Hongqiang Ren Jinju Geng Kan Li Ke Xu | 2020 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2020,32,1: | 7 |
