Progress in the stratigraphy and geochronology of the Shuidonggou site,Ningxia,North China显示文摘In the past years we carried out further stratigraphy division in field and it is found that rich stone artifacts can be found in fluvial-shallow lake-alluvial sediments on the terrace Ⅱ of Biangou River, in Shuidonggou site, Ningxia and they are SDG1, 2 and 7. More luminescence and AMS 14C dating in laboratory show that Paleolithic culture develops during the Upper Paleolithic period with ages of 35―20 ka. The Paleolithic culture of SDG 1 is a little earlier than that of SDG 2 similar to SDG 7. The sandy sediments on terrace Ⅱ of Biangou River deposits in the past 72―18 ka, corresponding to Last Glacial. SDG2 has a stable sedimentary environment, resulting in the continuous stratigraphy, thickest deposits and rich environment and culture information, which can be regarded as the important and classic paleoanthropological section of Late Pleistocene in this region.LIU DeCheng WANG XuLong GAO Xing XIA ZhengKai PEI ShuWen CHEN FuYou WANG HuiMing 2009Chinese Science Bulletin2009,54,21:13
Analysis of sedimentary-geomorphologic variation and the living environment of hominids at the Shuidonggou Paleolithic site显示文摘Shuidonggou is one of the most important Upper Paleolithic sites in North China. Due to the presence of rich human remains, animal fossils, abundant sporopollen and unique geological sequence,it is the type site for Late Pleistocene to Holocene human occupation and environmental change in the Ningxia-Inner Mongolia region. Many scholars suggest that the site should be named the 'Shuidong-gou Formation' of Late Pleistocene in North China. Dating results indicate that ancient human activities at the site took place 30―24 ka (Marine Isotope Stage MIS 3). The climate at that time was warmer and moister than present day,and adequate precipitation led to the formation of water pack depressions where broad-leaf trees and sparse forest vegetations,as well as herbivorous animals flourished,mak-ing the area suitable for early human hunting, gathering and survival. The Neolithic human occupation happened 9―5 ka at the site, while similar environmental conditions with MIS3 occurred. The absence of human activity record in the region during the Last Glacial Maximum (MIS2) suggests that the envi-ronment was too harsh for humans to live there.GAO Xing YUAN BaoYin PEI ShuWen WANG HuiMin CHEN FuYou FENG XingWu 2008Chinese Science Bulletin2008,53,13:12
Modern human behaviors during the late stage of the MIS3 and the broad spectrum revolution:Evidence from a Shuidonggou Late Paleolithic site显示文摘The last glacial period was vital for the distribution and evolution of early modern humans in Asia. The Shuidonggou Late Paleolithic site, dated at 30-20 ka BP, accumulated cultural remains during the important late stage of MIS 3 period in the last glacial. These remains represent characteristics of typical Late Paleolithic conditions in North China:high degree of standardization and morphological variability of tool types, exploitation of bone materials, systematic use of body decorations, extensive use of earth-pit hearths, distinct functional spatial organization within habitations, and conversion of subsistence patterns. These characteristics illustrate early modern human behaviors during the late MIS3 period, and provide clues and perspectives for the analysis of early modern human origins in China. At the same time, the conversion of subsistence patterns is considered to be a combination of multiple early modern human behaviors, as well as the result of the Broad Spectrum Revolution. In this paper, we argue for the dynamic mechanism of Broad Spectrum Revolution from a human behavioral and ecological perspective.GUAN Ying GAO Xing LI Feng PEI ShuWen CHEN FuYou ZHOU ZhenYu 2012Chinese Science Bulletin2012,57,4:10
Technology diffusion and population migration reflected in blade technologies in northern China in the Late Pleistocene显示文摘In recent years, the origin and evolution of modern human behaviors have become a common topic of research in Paleolithic archaeology. One important part of modern human behavior, blade technology, was once thought to be unique to modern humans. Recent studies have suggested that variations in blade technology do not fully correspond to modern populations. However, the standardization, diversity, discontinuity in terms of time distribution, and differences in spatial distribution of blade technology give it an important role in discussions of modes of adaptation, diffusion of technology, and population migration of hominins. By categorizing the major blade assemblages in China, we show that there were two blade reduction methods in northern China: the Levallois method and the prismatic method. Dating back 40000–30000 years, the Levallois and prismatic blade method combined to form the characteristics of the early stage of the Upper Paleolithic. Artifacts bearing such characteristics are located in Northwest China, Northeast China, and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The unearthed blades are similar in technological organization and are connected geographically with those discovered in Siberia and Mongolia, which also indicates a distinct border from those discovered in northern China. This fact is suggestive of population immigration. About 29000–25000 years ago, a combination of prismatic blades and microblades was developed in the hinterland of China; however whether it can be regarded as the representative of population migration or only a technological adaption remains undetermined. We suggest that the system of production of different blades should be distinguished in the study of blade assemblages and that different blade methods should not be integrated into a single technical system to discuss technology diffusion and population dispersal.LI Feng CHEN FuYou WANG YingHua GAO Xing 2016Science China Earth Sciences2016,59,8:9
An engraved artifact from Shuidonggou,an Early Late Paleolithic Site in Northwest China显示文摘Cognition and symbolic thinking are viewed as important features of modern human behavior.Engraved objects are seen as a hallmark of cognition and symbolism, and even as evidence for language.Accumulated evidences including engraved bones, ochre, ostrich eggshells and stone artifacts were unearthed from Africa,Europe,Levant even Siberia Paleolithic sites. But the archaeological evidence for this, including beads, ornaments, burials, performed objects and engraved objects,is rarely discovered in the Pleistocene of East Asia. The present paper reports an engraved stone object unearthed in the Early Late Paleolithic levels about 30 ka BP at the Shuidonggou site(SDG) in northwestern China. It was unearthed in the 1980's excavation from Lower culture unit of SDG1 but was identified in 2011 when the first author of this article observed the collection from the 1980's excavations stored in the Institute of Archaeology of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region for further detailed lithic analysis. This lithic artifact is the first engraved non-organic object of the Paleolithic period found in China. In order to clarify the details of the incisions and to document the human intentional modifications,we used a KEYENCE VHX-600 Digital Microscope to measure and observe all the incisions in 3-dimensional perspective.Comparing the natural cracks and analyzing many details of the incisions,we argue that incisions on this stone artifact are the result of intentional behaviors by ancient humans. Also,we exclude the possible other causes including animal-induced damages,post-depositional phenomenon and unintentional by-products.Combining all these features,we suggest that the incisions were made by an intentional behavior and were probably of a non-utilitarian character.Because the nature of most other engraved objects in China is debate,we cannot get a clear scenario of the emergence and progress of modern human behavior in North China. But we infer the possible existence of a counting or recording system,or other symbolic behaviors, which reflect considerably evolved cognitive capacities or modern human behavior in the Early Late Paleolithic of East Asia.PENG Fei GAO Xing WANG HuiMin CHEN FuYou LIU DeCheng PEI ShuWen 2012Chinese Science Bulletin2012,57,35:8
Warm-Season Diurnal Variations of Total, Stratiform, Convective, and Extreme Hourly Precipitation over Central and Eastern China显示文摘Diurnal variations in amount, frequency and intensity of warm-season hourly precipitation(HP) at seven levels, which are defined as HP 0.1, 0.5, 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 mm, are revealed based on no less than 30 years of hourly rain-gauge observations at national stations over central and eastern China(CEC). This study investigates the variations, relationships, differences and similarities of total, stratiform, convective and extreme HP over the entire CEC and various subregions. Results indicate that the variations in the amount and frequency of HP at the seven levels over the entire CEC all display a bimodal feature. For various regions, the variations of total HP mostly feature two peaks, while convective HP mainly occurs in the late afternoon and determines the diurnal variation of total HP intensity. On the basis of the primary peak time periods of HP frequency at all levels over different subregions, the variations can be classified into three main categories: late-afternoon primary peak, nocturnal primary peak, and time-shifting primary peak. However, the variations over some coastal regions like the Liaodong Peninsula, the Shandong Peninsula, and the coastal regions of Guangdong, distinctly differ from those over their corresponding larger regions. Overall, the normalized diurnal variation amplitude of amount and frequency increases with the increasing HP intensity; convective precipitation can be represented by HP 10 mm; and the intensity of HP 50 mm is slightly larger during the nighttime than during the daytime over the entire CEC. In northern China, diurnal variation in HP 5 mm can represent well that in convective precipitation.Yongguang ZHENG Yanduo GONG Jiong CHEN Fuyou TIAN 2019Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2019,36,2:6
Characterization of 500 Chinese patients with cervical esophageal cancer by clinicopathological and treatment outcomes显示文摘Objective: There are no comprehensive studies on survival outcomes and optimal treatment protocols for cervical esophageal cancer(CEC), due to its rare clinical prevalence. Our objective was to determine the relationship between pathological characteristics, treatment protocols, and survival outcomes in Chinese CEC patients. Methods: A total of 500 Chinese CEC patients were selected from our 500,000 esophageal and gastric cardia carcinoma database(1973–2018). There were two main groups: patients treated with surgery, and patients receiving non-surgical treatments(radiotherapy, radiochemotherapy, and chemotherapy). The Chi-square test and Kaplan–Meier method were used to compare the continuous variables and survival. Results: Among the 500 CEC patients, 278(55.6%) were male, and the median age was 60.9 ± 9.4 years. A total of 496 patients(99.2%) were diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma. In 171(34.2%) patients who received surgery, 22(12.9%) had undergone laryngectomy. In 322(64.4%) patients who received non-surgical treatments, 245(76.1%) received radiotherapy. Stratified survival analysis showed that only T stage was related with survival outcomes for CEC patients in the surgical group, and the outcomes between laryngectomy and non-laryngectomy patients were similar. It was noteworthy that the 5-year survival rate was similar in CEC patients among the different groups treated with surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or radiochemotherapy(P = 0.244). Conclusions: The CEC patients had similar survival outcomes after curative esophagectomy and radiotherapy, including those with or without total laryngectomy. These findings suggest that radiotherapy could be the initial choice for treatment of Chinese CEC patients.Peinan Chen Xueke Zhao Fuyou Zhou Xin Song Shoujia Hu Yan Jin Xianzeng Wang Xuena Han ZongminFan Ran Wang Bei Li Wenli Han Panpan Wang Jilin Li Lixin Wan Liguo Zhang Qide Bao Fubao Chang Yanru Qin Zhiwei Chang Jianwei Ku Haijun Yang Ling Yuan Jingli Ren Xuemin Li Lidong Wang 2020Cancer Biology & Medicine2020,17,1:6
Climate background of the evolution from Paleolithic to Neolithic cultural transition during the last deglaciation in the middle reaches of the Yellow River显示文摘Shizitan in Jixian County, Shanxi Province, is a site of transitional period from Paleolithic to Neolithic. The dating and the sporopollen analysis show that the middle reaches of the Yellow River where the site is located had been maintaining a steppe environment during 35.1-9.4 kaBP, in which, 35.1-17 kaBP belonged to the last glacial. With cold and dry climate, this period featured a desert steppe environment. In the late of this period, the area had a cold and half-humid steppe environment. The 17.0-11.9 kaBP belonged to the early- and mid-period of the last deglaciation. Mild and half-arid steppe alternates with mild and half-arid steppe, with a small amount of deciduous broadleaf species. During the period of 11.9-10.5 kaBP, cold and dry glacial climate appeared once more, featuring a desert steppe environment. During 10.5-9.4 kaBP, it is mild and half-arid, and later transited toward warm and half-humid. The early phase of this period featured a steppe environment and the later transited into aZhengkai Xia Ge Chen Gongwang Zheng Fuyou Chen Junqing Han 2002Chinese Science Bulletin2002,47,1:6
Optical dating of the Jingshuiwan Paleolithic site of Three Gorges, China显示文摘The Jingshuiwan Paleolithic site occu- pies the second terrace on the right bank of the Yangtze River. The lithic assemblage is characterized by choppers and scrapers made on pebbles and large flakes——the typical lithic industry of South China. Deposits of the site are mainly composed of fluvial sediments. Quartz grains extracted from these fluvial sediments from which the artifacts were un- covered were dated using the optically stimulated luminescence/single-aliquot regenerative-dose tech- nique. The dating results show that ancient human activities at this site took place in the early Upper Pleistocene (ca. 70 ka). The successful age analysis of the Jingshuiwan site is considered as a major break- through in chronological analysis of Paleolithic open site in the Three Gorges region and even in South China. The dates obtained help to establish a more complete chronological framework of the Paleolithic cultural sequence in the region, and bear significant implica- tions in studying modern human origins in China.PEI Shuwen ZHANG Jiafu GAO Xing ZHOU Liping FENG Xingwu CHEN Fuyou 2006Chinese Science Bulletin2006,51,11:4
On the possible use of fire by Homo erectus at Zhoukoudian,China显示文摘For decades, the so-called Peking Man(Homo erectus pekinensis)at Zhoukoudian has been considered to be a hominin that engaged in the controlled production and management of fire. However, relatively recent analyses have cast doubt on this assertion. The most compelling reason for this doubt was the absence of siliceous aggregates in the Zhoukoudian deposits. This study presents evidence establishing the controlled use of fire by Homo erectus pekinensis through analyses of four soil samples sourced from Layers 4 and 6 at Zhoukoudian Locality 1.These results demonstrate that all four specimens contain siliceous aggregates as well as elemental carbon, and the potassium content of the insoluble residues of these specimens ranges between 1.21%and 2.94%.The analyses provide strong evidence of the in situ use of fire by Homo erectus pekinensis.Maohua Zhong Congling Shi Xing Gao Xinzhi Wu Fuyou Chen Shuangquan Zhang Xingkai Zhang John W.Olsen 2014Chinese Science Bulletin2014,59,3:4
Node2vec Representation for Clustering Journals and as A Possible Measure of Diversity显示文摘Purpose: To investigate the effectiveness of using node2 vec on journal citation networks to represent journals as vectors for tasks such as clustering, science mapping, and journal diversity measure.Design/methodology/approach: Node2 vec is used in a journal citation network to generate journal vector representations. Findings: 1. Journals are clustered based on the node2 vec trained vectors to form a science map. 2. The norm of the vector can be seen as an indicator of the diversity of journals. 3. Using node2 vec trained journal vectors to determine the Rao-Stirling diversity measure leads to a better measure of diversity than that of direct citation vectors.Research limitations: All analyses use citation data and only focus on the journal level.Practical implications: Node2 vec trained journal vectors embed rich information about journals, can be used to form a science map and may generate better values of journal diversity measures.Originality/value: The effectiveness of node2 vec in scientometric analysis is tested. Possible indicators for journal diversity measure are presented.Zhesi Shen Fuyou Chen Liying Yang Jinshan Wu 2019Journal of Data and Information Science2019,4,2:3
M0S2 dual-gate transistors with electrostatically doped contacts显示文摘Two-dimensional(2D)transition metal dichalcogenides(TMDs)such as molybdenum disulfide(M0S2)have been intensively investigated because of their exclusive physical properties for advaneed electronics and optoelectronics. In the present work,we study the M0S2 transistor based on a novel tri-gate device architecture, with dual-gate(Dual-G)in the channel and the buried side-gate(Side-G)for the source/drain regi ons.All gates can be in depe ndently con trolled without in terfere nee.For a MoS2 sheet with a thick ness of 3.6 nm,the Schottky barrier(SB)and non-overlapped channel region can be effectively tuned by electrostatically doping the source/drain regions with Side-G.Thus,the extri nsic resista nee can be effectively lowered, and a boost of the ON-state cur re nt can be achieved.Mean while, the cha nn el c ontrol remai ns efficient under the Dual-G mode, with an ON-OFF current ratio of 3 x 107 and subthreshold swing of 83 mV/decade.The corresponding band diagram is also discussed to illustrate the device operati on mechanism. This no vel device structure ope ns up a new way toward fabricati on of high-performance devices based on 2D-TMDs.Fuyou Liao Yaocheng Sheng Zhongxun Guo Hongwei Tang Yin Wang Lingyi Zong Xinyu Chen Antoine Riaud Jiahe Zhu Yufeng Xie Lin Chen Hao Zhu Qingqing Sun Peng Zhou Xiangwei Jiang Jing Wan Wenzhong Bao David Wei Zhang 2019Nano Research2019,12,10:2
The depositional Environment at Shuidonggou Locality 2 in Northwest China at ~72-18 kaBP显示文摘Shuidonggou site has abundant Paleolithic remains of Late Pleistocene deposition. Studying the evolution of depositional environments is essential to the comprehensive understanding of the living conditions of ancient populations. To reconstruct the depositional environment at Shuidonggou, we carried out archaeological excavations and collected systematic deposition samples at the key position of Shuidonggou Locality 2 for grain size analysis and sporopollen statistics. The environmental evolution around the Shuidonggou site generally underwent four stages at ~72-18 kaBP. During the first stage (~72-41 kaBP), the river developed with gravel and sand stratums. During the second stage (41~34 kaBP), a swamp with numerous aquatic plants formed. In the third stage (34-29 kaBP), site formation was characterized by shallow lake depositional conditions; the climate was relatively warm and humid. The marginal bank depositional conditions deteriorated during the fourth stage (29-18 kaBP), and the site underwent several dry events; the climate also became drier and colder.LIU Decheng GAO Xing LIU Enfa PEI Shuwen CHEN Fuyou ZHANG Shuqin 2012Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2012,86,6:2
